A group of young boys in Georgia, ages 12 to 15, are facing charges for allegedly dumping hot water on one of their “friends” in a sleepover prank gone wrong, according to police and the victim’s family.

“You got to be in shock to know your friends are capable of doing this to you,” the victim‘s aunt, Nachelle Austille, told local NBC and ABC affiliate WALB. “Like somebody you trusted. It’s just horrible. He never thought something like this would happen to him.”

Tiffany West, the victim’s mother, told the local station that her son, age 12, was at a sleepover at one of their neighbor’s apartments in Tifton — about 180 miles south of Atlanta — when his friends allegedly set upon him. It’s unclear when the sleepover occurred as West is choosing to keep certain details private.

She says hearing about what happened to her son, who suffered second-degree burns on most of his face, upset her deeply.

“I mean, I really can’t describe it now,” West said. “In that moment I was just mad, hurt, in shock. Everything, I was seeing red. I was just trying to hurry up and get him some help.”

Police have confirmed the details of the incident to WALB, saying three minors were charged and released to their families. It’s unclear what the charges are. West shared photos with WALB over the weekend of her son in recovery.

“He was transported to the burn center in Augusta,” she said of the aftermath. “He had to have surgery. Of course, he is out of surgery and is recovering at home, now. But it is going to take him 12-14 days to heal.”

West and the boy’s aunt both note how he’s kept quiet about what happened and his situation. “He just don’t have no emotions about it,” Austille said. “He’s numb. He’s numb about it.”

More from Law&Crime: Egging prank gone wrong left man dead in street from ‘lovers quarrel’ — now a teen will be serving decades and her friends won’t be far behind

WALB reports that the three boys who were charged for the incident are awaiting their first hearing, which is expected to take place sometime in the next month.

West on Facebook says people have been reaching out to her and showing “love” to her family and son, whom she described as a “warrior” in a Jan. 3 post.

“Words can’t describe how Thankful I am for each & every one of you!” West wrote. “It brings tears to my eyes to know that SO many people care for me & my son & we are not alone in this! I drop to my knees every day Thanking God that my baby is still here & he is going to be ok bc it could have been worse! … My son is a Warrior & he has been so Strong! … Every donation, gift, encouraging words & prayer put a SMILE on my son face! Again, God Bless you all!”

Hundreds of people were sickened with rashes, fevers, headaches, and swollen lymph nodes after crawling through mud pits contaminated with bacteria from untreated water at a so-called “Tough Mudder” obstacle course in California last year, a new lawsuit alleges.

The lawsuit was filed by Evan Goldsmith, who was among hundreds of racers who took part in the event on Aug. 19 and 20, 2023, at the Sonoma Raceway and who reported rashes with fever, muscle pain, or nausea/vomiting from a bacterial infection called Aeromonas, typically found in freshwater, estuaries, marine environments and sludge. Participants flooded emergency rooms, a public health advisory was issued and an investigation was launched into the cause of the breakout in Sonoma County, about 45 miles north of San Francisco.

“We did the Saturday event and also the Sunday event, and on that Monday morning, we woke up completely covered from head to toe in a rash, not to get too graphic, but they were puss,” Goldsmith told local ABC affiliate KGO. “We drove home that Monday morning from Northern California to Southern California — by the time I got home, I had a really bad headache, I had a fever, it was really apparent at that point that we actually needed medical attention.”

In an email to Law&Crime, Goldsmith’s attorney, Elan Zektser, who also represents 150 other plaintiffs and plans to file more lawsuits, said, “It is time for Tough Mudder to step up and do the right thing. They recklessly made their die hard fans into never again participants by seriously sickening each and every one of them and some of their children. This lawsuit is a representation that companies can never put profit over people.”

The lawsuit names Spartan Race Inc., OCR US Holdings, which owns and operates Tough Mudder events across the country, Jill Gregory, then the executive vice president and general manager at Sonoma Raceway, and Brian Flynn, who took over the role following Gregory’s departure.

Tough Mudder representatives did not respond to a request for comment, and a spokesperson for Sonoma Raceway declined to comment, SFGate reported.

In a statement to local The CW affiliate KRON last year, Tough Mudder said all protocols were followed, and the company was actively investigating to understand what happened.

Sonoma County spokesperson Matt Brown did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Law&Crime.

The complaint said that almost immediately after the event, participants showed up at emergency rooms with symptoms of pustules, rash, lesions, fevers, diarrhea, muscle aches and other symptoms. Most medical facilities could not figure out what the patients had until cultures began to show Aeromonas as the bacterial source, the lawsuit said. Aeromonas can cause septicemia, a serious and potentially life-threatening infection that spreads throughout the bloodstream if not treated quickly, according to the lawsuit.

Health officials linked the cases to non-potable water on the event obstacle course. Most of the water used throughout the event was drawn from a hydrant fed by raw water from a spring and filter backwash from a potable surface water treatment plant typically used for dust control and construction, court documents said. Officials detected Aeromonas in all non-potable water samples.

Officials said 776 participants reported symptoms that included rash/lesions, fatigue, fever, headache, muscle pain, and swollen lymph nodes.

“Tough Mudder was aware that using the non-potable sources of water could cause severe illness in its participants,” the lawsuit said.

The year prior, Tough Mudder had over 30 complaints of illness in the exact location where the participants got sick, court documents said.

“Regardless of this knowledge, Tough Mudder conducted the race and knowingly and recklessly exposed thousands of its participants to severe illness,” the lawsuit said. “Defendants were aware that they were pumping their racetrack and showers with a contaminated water source, yet, they did it anyway.”

Tina M. Vaughn (Shelby County Jail)

A 42-year-old caregiver in Tennessee has been arrested for allegedly throwing boiling water on an elderly patient in her care, leaving the victim with second and third-degree burns on his face, neck, and back.

Tina M. Vaughn was taken into custody on Monday and charged with one felony count of aggravated abuse of a vulnerable adult and one misdemeanor count of simple assault, court records reviewed by Law&Crime show.

According to a probable cause affidavit, an officer with the Memphis Police Department at about 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 24, 2024, responded to a call at the Regional One Burn Center in the 800 block of Jefferson Avenue.

The patient suffered second and third-degree burns “to the right side of his face, shoulder, and right side of his back,” the affidavit states. The document notes that the victim — who is deaf — lives in a group home and has “intellectual and developmental disabilities,” which include schizophrenia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, commonly referred to as ADHD.

A sign language interpreter was required for police to take the victim’s statement.

The victim told the officer that at about 10:30 p.m. on Jan. 21, he was at his group home in the 600 block of Gookin Place along with his caregiver, whom he identified as Tina Vaughn. According to the victim, Vaughn was “responsible” for his well-being.

The victim said he was in the kitchen boiling water to cook some noodles when things went awry.

“(The victim) stated that Tina Vaughn was upset with him and told him to go to the living room,” the affidavit states. “While (the victim) was on the couch, Tina Vaughn got upset and threw the boiling water on (the victim), causing burns to his face, neck, and back.”

Vaughn allegedly got angry with the victim because he refused to go to sleep, police said.

The victim told police he “yelled and ran out of the apartment.”

After allegedly throwing the boiling water on the victim, Vaughn allegedly did not call the police or emergency medical services but did call her supervisor.

The victim returned to the home later that night, police said. When Vaughn came to work the next morning, she called an ambulance, which took the victim to the Regional One Burn Center.

Police included Vaughn in a six-person lineup, and the victim picked her as the individual who threw the boiling water on him, police said.

Police filed a separate report stating the victim had previously claimed that he burned himself by accident, tripping on a rug while carrying the boiling water and falling to the ground.

Vaughn similarly told medical staffers that the victim had tripped on the rug and burned himself, and she brought him in for medical treatment “when the extent of his injuries became evident.”

“Staff advised that Mrs. Vaughn acted appropriately and stayed with the victim for several hours until he was situated at the hospital,” the other report states.

Vaughn’s husband told Memphis CBS affiliate WREG that his wife loves the career she’s been in for more than 15 years, has never had any previous issues with those in her care, and did not harm the victim in any way.

Vaughn was released from the Shelby County Detention Center on Tuesday after posting a bond of $50,000. She is scheduled to appear in court again on Thursday for a bond review hearing, records show. It was not immediately clear if Vaughn had retained an attorney.

RIDGECREST, Calif. – A proposed project to increase water supply in Kern County is now open for public comment.

The Indian Wells Valley Groundwater Authority has proposed a water pipeline that would be partially located on Bureau of Land Management public lands in Kern County in order to provide additional water to the City of Ridgecrest and the Indian Wells Valley.

The Groundwater Authority originally identified this project in a Groundwater Sustainability Plan published in 2020 and approved by the California Department of Water Resources in 2022. The proposed pipeline would stretch between California City and Ridgecrest and include a right-of-way and authorization to construct a 50-mile buried pipeline up to 24-inches in diameter, of which 21 miles would pass through BLM-managed public lands.

If approved, the pipeline would originate at the Antelope Valley-East Kern Water Agency located in California City and terminate at the Indian Wells Valley Water District’s Ridgecrest Heights Water Storage Tank southwest of Ridgecrest. The proposed project would also include the construction of three booster pump stations and a regulating station, which would be necessary to pump the water over the El Paso Mountains between California City and Ridgecrest.

The proposed project area is partly located within three Areas of Critical Environmental Concern: El Paso to Golden Valley, Western Rand Mountains and Fremont-Kramer. The project plan would include design features to mitigate potential conflict with the desert tortoise, Mohave ground squirrel, and other natural and cultural resources in these areas.

Release of the project documents begins a 30-day public scoping period, during which the public can identify issues, suggest alternatives or provide information for potential consideration. Substantive written comments must be received by November 4, 2023. Members of the public may review the documents and submit comments via the BLM NEPA Register website, by email at mwiegmann@blm.gov, by fax at 760-384-5499 or by mail to the BLM Ridgecrest Field Office, Attention: Paul Rodriquez, 300 S. Richmond Road, Ridgecrest, CA 93555.

James Bond would have never been caught venturing into an off-limit area but the actor who played the fictional spy for years, Pierce Brosnan, wasn’t quite so slick, according to court records recently filed in Wyoming home of Yellowstone National Park.

In records obtained by Law&Crime from the U.S. District Court for the District of Wyoming, a citation was issued to Brosnan for “foot travel in a thermal area” at the park on Nov. 1.

The Irish-born Brosnan, 70, was also cited for a “closure violation” near Mammoth Terraces, The Messenger reported.

A review of the docket in Wyoming shows he is due in court next on Jan. 23, 2024, at 11 a.m. and his appearance is mandatory.

An attorney for Brosnan could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday.

In 2016, when a man was caught walking off a boardwalk in the same area he was fined $1,000 plus a $30 court processing fee, according to a statement from the National Parks Department.
