A Pennsylvania man’s longtime “thievery” has been punished with a substantial stint in prison, according to Keystone State authorities.

Matthew Patrick Gay, 34, was recently convicted on multiple offenses related to a string of diamond thefts that occurred at a Walmart Supercenter near Athens Township — a small community along the New York State border — throughout 2022, according to a press release issued by the Bradford County District Attorney’s Office.

In sum, the defendant stole seven diamond rings — valued at $7,362.50 — from the same store on several separate occasions.

This was not, however, the first time Gay was convicted.

Love true crime? Sign up for our newsletter, The Law&Crime Docket, to get the latest real-life crime stories delivered right to your inbox.

After his arrest in October 2022, the defendant was found guilty and slated to be sentenced in August 2024, according to the prosecutor’s office. But Gay did not attend his sentencing hearing; instead, he fled the county, and a warrant was eventually issued for his arrest.

“While on the run, Gay committed similar offenses in Berks County,” the press release says — a county located some 130 miles south — leading to a sentence of five to 24 months behind bars, plus two years of probation.

In April 2025, the defendant made his way back to Bradford County, where he then faced charges of retail theft and default in required appearance — the second charge due to skipping his original sentencing date. Both of those charges are considered felonies in the third degree.

In the present case, Gay was caught on surveillance footage asking a clerk behind the jewelry counter to view a particular ring, according to the prosecutor’s office. Then, when the employee was distracted, Gay switched out the stolen ring with a ring from his pocket.

At one point, the defendant was charged with grand larceny in the Empire State “for doing the same thing,” according to the prosecutor’s office. But those charges were eventually dropped.

Gay was ultimately sentenced to a minimum of 23 months and 258 days in state prison, with a maximum sentence of 95 months.

More Law&Crime coverage: ‘Ingenuity got you some county soup for dinner’: Man used rigged barcode ring to rob Walmart ‘several’ times, police say

“Gay’s criminal history includes more than two dozen offenses of this nature,” Bradford County District Attorney Richard Wilson said in a statement. “For that reason, a lengthy state prison sentence is appropriate. It appears to be the only way we can protect society from Matthew Gay’s thievery,”

Justin Metz, 42, singled out the woman at a Walmart in Atchison on U.S. Route 73 earlier this month and kidnapped her under the guise of a security guard, according to the local Hays Post news website and Fox affiliates KCTV and WDAF.

Metz allegedly approached the 32-year-old shopper as she was leaving the store and told her he was an “asset protection officer” who needed to speak with her, the Atchison Police Department reports.

He led the woman to the back of the Walmart and brought her into a bathroom, where he committed the sexual assault and then proceeded to go about his day while the woman notified police, officials say. Hours later, Metz allegedly returned to the Walmart and employees called authorities after spotting him walking around the store.

Cops responded and took Metz into custody without incident and charged him with kidnapping, rape and sexual battery. Walmart sent a statement out Tuesday confirming that Metz was not an employee nor was he working as a security guard.

“The safety of customers and associates is a top priority,” the retail giant said, according to WDAF. “We acted swiftly to engage law enforcement and are working closely with them throughout this investigation.”

Metz’s attack unfolded on March 9, but wasn’t reported until Tuesday. He has yet to appear in court for his charges and is currently locked up at the Atchison County jail as police look into whether Metz has committed similar attacks on other women. A court date has not been set for him yet as the investigation continues.

A teenager from North Carolina who was on the run after allegedly shooting and killing a woman who was waiting in line at a bank inside of a local Walmart was busted this week trying to board a Greyhound bus in Chicago, according to authorities.

Ezekiel Burden, 17, was caught in the Windy City on Tuesday thanks to joint efforts by the Lumberton Police Department, the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, United States Marshal Service and Chicago Police Department who all partnered in the arrest and investigation.

“Ezekiel Burden was arrested at a Greyhound Bus Station in Chicago, Illinois, by the United States Marshals Service (USMS) Fugitive Task Force after an informant provided the whereabouts of Burden,” NCSBI officials reported in a Wednesday press release.

Burden, of Lumberton, North Carolina, was wanted for first-degree murder, discharge of a firearm within an enclosure to incite fear and other charges related to the fatal Dec. 20 shooting of 42-year-old Brandy Nicole Olson at a Walmart Supercenter, according to the Lumberton Police Department. Burden’s buddy, Brian Campbell, 18, was charged with being an accessory after the fact. The two of them allegedly fled from the Walmart after the shooting, with Campbell turning himself in on Dec. 23.

Burden was allegedly trying to kill two other people he “knew” at the Walmart, according to police. He and Campbell appeared to be targeting two people who were standing at the Woodforest Bank located inside the Walmart, police said. Olson was also in line at the bank when she was shot.

Cellphone footage captured by a woman who was inside the Lumberton Walmart has audio where at least six gunshots can be heard ringing out from the front of the store near the bank where Olson was shot.

“The scariest s— I have ever experienced!” wrote Kayleann Brooke on Facebook, where she shared the video.

Another shopper, Steven Rumsey, told Raleigh CBS affiliate WNCN that Olson appeared to be trying to escape during the mayhem when she was accidentally struck by gunfire.

“When he started shooting, the lady ran in front of him,” Rumsey said.

Photos released by the NCSBI show Burden being captured at the Greyhound bus station.

He is reportedly awaiting extradition back to North Carolina at a Chicago jail.

Inset: Saiy-Yah Allen (Royal Funeral Service, Inc.). Background: Saiy-Yah died years after hitting his head on a cart in a Walmart in Florida (WTVJ).

The Florida mother of a 9-year-old boy who died years after hitting his head on a metal cart in Walmart is suing the megastore for allegedly creating a dangerous and unsafe condition that led to the boy’s death.

Tamika Springer is seeking damages beyond $30,000 in the death of her son, Saiy-Yah Allen, according to the complaint.

During testimony in the trial on Tuesday, Saiy-Yah’s sister spoke about her brother’s seizures in the years after the incident at a Fort Lauderdale location on Nov. 25, 2020, when the then-7-year-old boy walked into a metal stock cart and struck his head in a walkway.

“He would shake a lot and he would look in a different direction, and then he would shake and make noise, too,” Miharah Allen said. “Every time he ate, he would throw up, he would throw the food up or use the bathroom on himself.”

The testimony came as Walmart attorneys questioned whether his injury then led to his seizures and death on May 7, 2023, local NBC affiliate WTVJ reported.

A media representative for Walmart did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Law&Crime. The company said in court documents the boy was not looking where he was going when he walked into the cart.

“Walmart is not liable for the incident as the stock cart was so open and obvious that S.A. should have been reasonably expected to discover it and protect himself (by simply walking around it), and a stock cart is so obvious and not inherently dangerous that it can be said, as a matter of law, not to constitute a dangerous condition that will not give rise to liability due to the failure to maintain the premises in a reasonably safe condition,” the defendant’s motion for summary judgment said. “Here, unfortunately, S.A. was inattentive and failed to walk around a stock cart’s handles that were observed by his sister, who was not walking with her head turned. S.A. failed to use his senses and was walking while looking backward, therefore he did not observe the open, obvious, and innocuous stock cart.”

Saiy-Yah’s obituary said he loved to draw, paint and make origami.

“He often made origami birds and drawings for our friends and even random people he came in contact with. His eyes and smile lit the entire universe! He did everything with the utmost pride and precision. We all told him how brilliant and genius he is and how his talents will only get greater.”

“F–k that! Just kill me now!” a murder suspect told cops as they had him handcuffed on the floor of a Walmart this summer.

Cops in Albuquerque, New Mexico, said that the defendant Jamil Lewis, had been caught attempting to shoplift a holster from the store on July 29, according to The Albuquerque Journal. He allegedly slipped a gun into it, and then put it into his waistband. Weeks earlier on June 8, Lewis, had shot and killed Gerald Ibuado, 44, and injured the man’s brother, police said.

Body camera video obtained by Law&Crime shows police rushing over to Lewis at the superstore on July 29 and giving chase as he — wearing a red “Chucky”-themed sweatshirt and shorts — ran off.

“Hey, stop running!” said the officer. “I’m going to shoot you!”

Lewis eventually stopped and lay prone. The ensuing arrest is somewhat chaotic, as he tenses up and yells as three officers manhandle him into handcuffs. He questions why they are detaining him and complains about them searching him in the store, preferring it outside.

“Why?” an officer asked rhetorically. “So you can run?”

More Law&Crime Coverage: ‘I took a lot of s—‘: Woman arrested after shoplifting more than $1K from Walmart as part of ‘game,’ deputies say

“I’m not going to run,” he said. “You guys already got me in handcuffs.”

That is all timed at about 1:30 p.m. The tone changed less than an hour later. Footage shows a decidedly calmer Lewis sitting in the back of a police vehicle, handcuffed and smoking with police help.

Lewis lamented his situation.

“It’s going to affect my son,” he said in the video. “It’s going to affect my mom.”

A man is accused of trying to abduct a young boy in the middle off a Walmart.

Pablo Pintueles Hernandez is charged with false imprisonment of a child 13 years old and under, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office in Florida announced.

Surveillance footage shows a man walk up to a small child. He began to pull the boy away until a woman leapt forward and grabbed the child back, pulling him behind a nearby shopping cart. Deputies claim Pintueles Hernandez is that man.

Authorities said they responded to a Walmart on Friday in the community of Lehigh Acres. It was regarding an attempted kidnapping, they said.

They said they learned that a man, later identified as Pintueles Hernandez, tried to abduct a 4-year-old boy from the child’s family by grabbing and walking away with him.

“Deputies immediately reviewed the surveillance footage and confirmed an unknown man walked up to the child shopping with his family, grabbed his wrist, and forced him to go in his direction before a family member intervened and pulled the child back,” deputies said. “Deputies tirelessly worked alongside our Real Time Intelligence Center Analysts to identify the suspect. Together, analysts and deputies utilized advanced technology to quickly identify and locate Pintueles Hernandez. Within an hour of the incident, deputies responded to the residence of Pintueles Hernandez where his identity was confirmed. Due to the nature of the crime, our Major Crimes Unit detectives responded to the home and began investigating.”

Detectives claim they confirmed that Pintueles Hernandez did in fact grab the child’s wrist, pulled him, and said, “let’s go.” The defendant is accused of restraining the boy’s movement and directing him to walk with him.

“What this criminal did is incredibly disturbing,” Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno said. “I never want anyone in Lee County to feel unsafe, especially going on a simple shopping trip. My team will stop at NOTHING to ensure criminals like this face the consequences of their actions.”
