Background: News footage of the crime scene at Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco, Texas (KXAS). Inset (left): Karmelo Anthony (Frisco Police Department). Inset (right): Austin Metcalf (GoFundMe).

A Texas teenager who allegedly stabbed another teenager to death during a high school track meet told police that he acted in self-defense.

Days after the April 2, stabbing death of Austin Metcalf, 17, new details have emerged about the events that led up to the altercation that resulted in his death. In an arrest affidavit obtained by local ABC outlet WFAA, police said that following the alleged incident, suspect Karmelo Anthony, 17, told officers, “I was protecting myself.”

As he was led away from the scene, the defendant reportedly stated, “He put his hands on me, I told him not to.”

Local CBS affiliate KBTX also reported on the arrest affidavit, which contained several redacted names of almost 30 students who were witnesses to the alleged altercation.

According to the arrest affidavit, one witness stated that Metcalf told Anthony he had to move his seat in the bleachers; Anthony was reportedly sitting in seats for Memorial High School students, but he was a student at Centennial High School. After being told to move, the witness told police that Anthony reached inside his bag and told Metcalf, “Touch me and see what happens.”

The witness said that Metcalf then reportedly touched Anthony, and Anthony allegedly prodded Metcalf to punch him. Metcalf then allegedly grabbed Anthony, at which point a witness told police that Anthony allegedly “stabbed Austin once in the chest and then ran away.” The alleged weapon was reportedly found in the bleachers.

When officers responded to the scene and located Anthony, the affidavit said that the teenager said without prompting, “I was protecting myself.” The affidavit also stated that as he was being cuffed, Anthony was identified as the alleged suspect by another officer, to which Anthony responded, “I’m not alleged, I did it.”

Additional reporting on the affidavit by ABC News stated that Anthony was “emotional” and “crying hysterically” as he was being taken away from the stadium by officers. On his way back to the squad car, Anthony reportedly said, unprompted, “He put his hands on me, I told him not to.” He also reportedly asked officers if Metcalf was “going to be OK.”

Anthony’s family started a GoFundMe page in which they backed up his claims of self-defense.

In the fundraising post, they said there was no designated seating in the bleachers that night.

“It’s NORMAL for students from different schools to gather under another school’s tent. Karmelo had friends there—he wasn’t trespassing or looking for trouble,” the GoFundMe reads, adding, “No student has the right to remove another student” from another tent.

The post accused both Metcalf and his twin brother of being “known bullies” and “violent aggressors” who reportedly “tried to take [Anthony’s] belongings” and “JUMP him.” Referring to Metcalf and his brother, the poster asked, “If two 200+ lb attackers came at YOUR child, what would you expect them to do?”

Anthony is charged with first-degree murder. After his arrest, he was transferred to the Collin County Jail, where he is being held on $1 million bond.

In a press release from the Washington County Attorney’s Office, the Washington City Police Department provided the names of two suspects identified as the alleged killers of 47-year-old Andreea Mottram. Mihaela Gabriela Sorescu, 16, who also uses the name Bella, is Mottram’s daughter. The other suspect, Abigael Paige Flanagan, 17, who also uses the name Jay, was also staying at the home at the time. Police said in probable cause affidavits for both girls that they are “unaccounted for at this time.”

Mottram was found at the VRBO vacation rental home on March 23 by a cleaning crew who entered the home in order to provide cleaning services. According to court documents obtained by Law&Crime, they noticed that the garage door was open and that there were still “a lot of belongings left in the residence.” After going upstairs, they found Mottram’s body. Authorities said that she had been stabbed 14 times.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found two phones and a purse in the toilet that contained Mottram’s identification. Police determined that the phones belonged to Mottram and Flanagan. The documents stated that evidence technicians also located a number of knives on the property, including one in the sink that had been “washed off.”

According to authorities, a bloody pair of pants “crumpled up in a ball” in the master bathroom was a size that matched the physical description of Sorescu. On the left leg, investigators observed a “bloody imprint of a knife blade.”

Further investigation revealed more about the background of the two girls and Mottram. Both teenagers had spent time in residential facilities; Flanagan had recently been checked out of one by her parents, while Sorescu was currently enrolled at a facility for the past three years. The reasons for their treatment were not provided.

The documents stated that Sorescu also kept a diary. Back in November, she reportedly wrote about “how much she hated her mother” and that she “wanted to kill her.” Sorescu also reportedly had a history of violent behavior and self-harm.

Police stated that a red Hyundai Kona had been rented by Mottram on March 20. The car was spotted by an automated license plate reader in Cedar City, Utah, just after midnight on March 23. Hours later, the car was spotted by a reader in Las Vegas, Nevada. The final reading tracked the car to Paramount, California, at 9 a.m.

Despite their still being at-large, Washington City Police charged both Sorescu and Flanagan with murder, obstruction of justice, and theft of a motor vehicle. According to Utah law, both will be charged as adults.

A twisted TikTok prank, in which a 19-year-old and a 17-year-old from Texas followed elementary school students home from school and asked if they “wanted to be kidnapped,” has landed the two teens behind bars on charges of making terroristic threats, police say.

Kaine Villareal and Lane Burch, both of Kyle, were caught Wednesday following a 7-year-old and a 9-year-old as they walked home from Negley Elementary School that afternoon at around 3:20 p.m., according to the Kyle Police Department.

The pair approached the two kids and asked if they “wanted to be kidnapped” as part of a “prank” for social media, according to police.

“The children immediately contacted their parents, who notified the Kyle Police Department,” KPD said in a press release. “Upon arrival, the suspects told officers that they were repeating a TikTok prank.”

While their TikTok profiles appear to be private and locked, Villareal can be seen on X and sports websites as he was a baseball player, wrestler and runner in high school.

The duo’s arrest marks the third time in roughly a month that a TikTok prank has landed someone in hot water and charged.

“Smith filmed his face, the pesticide can, and the act of spraying,” the Mesa Police Department said in a press release. “He later posted the video online.”

Smith is facing a felony count of introducing poison and misdemeanor criminal damage, endangerment and theft charges for the incident.

After observing the video online, the Port Arthur Police Department and Child Protective Services started investigating the incident, according to local ABC and NBC affiliate KBMT.
Two teenagers in South Carolina, ages 16 and 15, are facing murder charges for allegedly bludgeoning, stabbing and then burning a 13-year-old girl inside of a vacant house in what cops are calling a “gut-wrenching” killing that “shocks the conscious.”

“Brutal, heinous, vicious, gruesome, monstrous and disturbing. These are the words I’d use to describe this murder investigation,” said Columbia Police Chief William “Skip” Holbrook at a press conference Saturday.

Ka’Niyah Baker, the victim, was found dead in a “structure fire” at a vacant home on Cardamon Court in Columbia last Wednesday night, according to the Columbia Police Department. She had been reported missing on Jan. 12, with the last sighting of her being listed at a location roughly 20 miles away from where she was found.

“The manner of death was not an accident,” said Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford at Saturday’s presser. “Ka’Niyah was bludgeoned, stabbed and burned.”

According to Holbrook, Baker was born and raised in Sumter and was most recently in foster care in Columbia. She and the two suspects all have a history of being “runaways,” Holbrook said, with each of them going missing over the past two months after leaving home.

“First suspect is a 16-year-old female,” Holbrook said. “Her last known address was in Columbia. She was reported missing by her mom on Jan. 12. She has a history of disorderly conduct, malicious injury, throwing bodily fluids; she was wanted by the Department of Juvenile Justice (Georgia) for cutting off her ankle monitor around Jan. 12. She was last enrolled in a local high school in January 2024 and she’s currently listed as dropped out and she is a frequent runaway.”

The second suspect was described as a 15-year-old female whose last known address was in Columbia as well. “She also was enrolled in a local high school as of last December,” Holbrook said. “She is currently listed as dropped out and she also is a frequent runaway.”

Describing Baker, Holbrook said: “She also has a history of running away.” Her cause of death was blunt force trauma.

“We expect to pursue justice in this matter,” Fifth Circuit Solicitor Byron Gipson told reporters. A motive has yet to be released.

“When you talk to people that have been involved in committing heinous crimes like this, you’re looking to seek answers and read their reactions,” Holbrook said. “But sometimes, it’s when there are no reactions is what’s most troubling.”

When Baker was first reported as missing, flyers were sent out on Jan. 16 saying she was believed to be in danger, according to local ABC and CW affiliate WIS. At that point, however, she had already been found dead in the fire.

More from Law&Crime: ‘No sympathy’: Teen girl who took selfies after beating disabled man to death with friends tries apologizing to victim’s family in court as she learns her fate

“The young woman’s description matched a few other women who were reported as runaways or missing,” Rutherford explained. “So, the reason that the flyer went out for a missing teen, even though this person already deceased, was in the hopes that she was still alive and this was not her.”

Holbrook told reporters that Baker’s murder “has been an extremely difficult case” for investigators to work on.

“This shocks the conscience to me,” Holbrook said. “We’ve got some work to do with our system. We’ve got some work to do with our young people. There’s too much despair. And we’ve got to change that.”

A teenager and two parents are facing felonies for their alleged roles in a crash that killed another 18-year-old woman in Georgia.

The driver of the vehicle involved in the crash, 18-year-old Hannah Hackemeyer, is charged with three counts of homicide by vehicle and driving under the influence, among other crimes, DeKalb County District Attorney Sherry Boston said in a press release. Her friend’s parents, Sumanth Rao, 50, and Anindita Rao, 49, are facing involuntary manslaughter charges for allegedly allowing the teens to drink before the fateful crash that killed Sophia Lekiachvili.

Prosecutors say Hackemeyer, Lekiachvili, and the Rao’s daughter were drinking at the Rao household the night of Feb. 23 and into Feb. 24. The underage teens were drinking with the blessing of Sumanth Rao and Anindita Rao. Boston told reporters Wednesday at a press conference the Rao home was known as the “party house” where underage drinking was the norm.

“Halloween, Homecoming, the last day of school,” Boston said. “It is a miracle that nothing happened prior to Feb. 24. Mr. and Mrs. Rao’s choices that night led to the death of a teenage girl.”

According to prosecutors, the teens had just polished off a bottle of wine when they decided to go for a drive shortly before midnight. With Hackemeyer driving, Lekiachvili sat in the front passenger seat while the Rao girl rode in the back seat. They had an open bottle of wine in the car. Hackemeyer allegedly was driving the Mazda CX-5 nearly 100 mph — more than 60 mph over the speed limit — when she lost control and crashed, causing the car to roll over.

Hackemeyer and the Rao girl crawled out of the car. First responders rushed to the scene where they found Lekiachvili trapped in the passenger seat. They extricated her and rushed the teen to the hospital where she died from her injuries.

An investigation unveiled that Hackemeyer allegedly had a Blood Alcohol Concentration of 0.046, which is more than twice the legal limit for someone under the age of 21.

Trabuco Hills High School in Mission Viejo, California (Screengrab via KTLA).

Just days after he was hit with a civil lawsuit for showing a group of teens obscene videos, an Orange County, California, sheriff’s deputy has officially been stripped of his license to work as a law enforcement officer.

Justin Raymond Ramirez, 34, faced criminal charges in February 2023 for showing four teenage girls videos that were pornographic, violent, and otherwise inappropriate — all while working as a school resource officer at Trabuco Hills High School in Mission Viejo. According to prosecutors, during a school lunch break in September 2022, two girls approached Ramirez’s patrol car and the officer showed them a video of a couple engaging in sexual intercourse. The girls then called two additional girls over to the car and Ramirez showed the video to all four students. The students were all 15 or 16 years old.

Prosecutors went on to describe the disturbing video:

After a few moments, another man enters the room with a knife. He stabs the first man and proceeds to repeatedly stab the woman on the bed. The woman ultimately goes lifeless as a pool of blood appears on camera. In addition to showing this video to the students, Ramirez sent the video by phone to another deputy sheriff in 2021.

Prosecutors said that a second video Ramirez shared with the group of teens showed two men smoking a controlled substance together and one man blowing smoke from the substance “into the rear end area of the other man.”

The two videos, along with a third that showed a severe dog bite sustained by a woman, were found on Ramirez’s cellphone by police and matched descriptions provided by the students. Additional searches of Ramirez’s cellphone showed other images that appeared to be inappropriately taken from crime scenes, nude photos of Ramirez on police grounds, and a video of a couple having intercourse that appeared to be recorded through the window of a private home.

When one student’s parent notified the school about the incident, authorities referred the case to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.

At the time, Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said in a statement, “Ramirez had no business being in a position of trust around children — and he abused that position of trust in a truly disgusting way.” Spitzer also noted at the time that Ramirez resigned from the Sheriff’s Department in December 2022.

In April 2023, Ramirez entered a court-ordered diversion program that permitted him to avoid jail time for the misdemeanor criminal charges against him related to the videos.

After holding a hearing in March, the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) revoked Ramirez’s license to work as a law enforcement officer in the state on Thursday. The commission’s decertification decision will be forwarded to a national database of ineligible officers.

The commission’s decision came days after a civil lawsuit was filed against Ramirez and Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes by a family of one of the teen girls who said Ramirez showed her the videos.

According to the Orange County Register, the lawsuit filed by the family alleged that the teen had been reluctant to tell her parents about seeing the video and felt “extreme emotional distress” at losing trust in police. The girl’s mother said in the lawsuit that when she called authorities about the matter, she “emphatically” told a dispatcher multiple times that she did not want anyone sent to her home, because she did not want police involved to know where she lived.

According to the Orange County Register, the mother claimed that despite assurances that a different law enforcement agency would respond to the mother’s complaint, Ramirez and another deputy showed up at the family’s residence. According to the complaint, Ramirez “had a strange grin on his face” while the mother explained her concerns — all while the mother was unaware that Ramirez himself was the officer in question.

The lawsuit also reportedly alleged that later, the mother received an apologetic call from Barnes, who said he was “just as angry as she was.”

Ramirez was also a defendant in a federal wrongful death lawsuit stemming from the 2019 death of Chong Tok “Richard” Rha following a violent struggle as the officers tried to take Rha into custody. Though Ramirez was cleared of any criminal charges related to Rha’s arrest, the Orange County Board of Supervisors agreed to a $1.5 million settlement of the civil claim filed by Rha’s family.

Counsel for Ramirez could not immediately be reached for comment.

A member of the MS-13 gang who fled the U.S. after a quadruple murder of four men lured to a park in New York under the guise of smoking pot pleaded guilty this week to racketeering charges in the scheme that stemmed from gang disrespect on social media.

Edwin Rodriguez, 24, also known as “Manicomio,” entered his plea to the federal charges in the murders of Justin Llivicura, Michael Lopez, Jorge Tigre, and Jefferson Villalobos. Rodriguez faces up to life in prison. His sentencing was set for Sept. 18.

“He is relieved to put this behind him in terms of the plea, and he’s ready now to move on to the next phase of the proceeding and the next phase of his life,” Rodriguez’s defense attorney, Glenn Obedin, said, Newsday reported.

The bloodshed happened on April 11, 2017, when five men were lured to a park by MS-13 associates under the guise of smoking marijuana, authorities said. Once there, Rodriquez and a dozen other MS-13 gang members, all armed with machetes, knives, an axe, and wooden clubs, surrounded and attacked the victims. One escaped.

The hacked, stabbed and bludgeoned bodies of the four victims were found the following evening. Rodriguez was arrested in El Salvador and extradited to the United States in 2022.

The summer after the quadruple murder, then-President Donald Trump paid a visit to Long Island and made remarks about the gang.

“Since January ’16 — think of this — MS-13 gang members have brutally murdered 17 beautiful, young lives in this area on Long Island alone,” he said. “They butcher those little girls. They kidnap, they extort, they rape and they rob. They prey on children. They shouldn’t be here. They stomp on their victims. They beat them with clubs. They slash them with machetes, and they stab them with knives. They have transformed peaceful parks and beautiful, quiet neighborhoods into bloodstained killing fields. They’re animals.”

Rodriguez — 17 at the time of the murders, was initially charged as a juvenile on March 16, 2018. He was arrested in El Salvador in 2019 and was returned to the U.S. in 2022. Rodriguez agreed to be transferred to adult status as part of his guilty plea.

Authorities described MS-13 as the most violent criminal organization on Long Island. Since 2003, hundreds of MS-13 members have been convicted on federal felony charges in the Eastern District of New York, authorities said in a news release.

Police got into a shootout with several teenagers just outside a Six Flags on Saturday night, injuring a 15-year-old boy.

It happened just after 6 p.m. at the Six Flags Over Georgia in Cobb County. Authorities say about 500 or 600 teenagers began running through the park and brawling near the entrance. Security and Cobb County Police began clearing out the park when a group of teenagers fired shots at cops on a street just outside park property, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a press release. No officers were hit but a bullet struck an unoccupied Cobb County police car.

Officers identified the shots as coming from a wooded area nearby and one cop fired back, striking a 15-year-old boy, authorities said. Cops said they found a gun nearby. Paramedics took the boy to the hospital where he is listed in critical condition. The shots sent people scrambling and many of the teens were picked up by their parents at a nearby Wendy’s. Several videos that showed the chaos and mayhem were posted to social media.

Tiasione Justice lives nearby and talked to local Fox affiliate WAGA.

“It was a real big group of kids. I never seen a group of kids like that outside of high school, you know?” Justice said. “Parents just need to control their kids better, probably, or step in and make sure their kids are doing what they need to be doing.”

It’s not clear if police arrested anyone.

Six Flags released a statement to the media calling the incident disappointing.

Our goal is to provide safe, fun entertainment. We employ state of the art security systems and metal detection, maintain a robust and vigilant Public Safety Department, and have strong support from Cobb County Police who are present both inside and outside the park. Every guest is expected to follow our strict code of conduct and anyone unwilling to follow that code of conduct is unwelcome.

It is incredibly disappointing that our community is disrupted at public events throughout the region by groups of underaged youth. Just like other venues in the area, we are committed to keeping this type of trouble outside our park and off our property. There was police activity involving gunshots; we want to confirm there was no shooting at our property or parking lot. This took place on South Service Road that is not owned or operated by Six Flags. However, we join our community and the Atlanta region in our commitment to safety and security. We won’t put up with that type of activity here.

There were also brawls at last year’s opening day, WAGA reported.

GBI will investigate Saturday night’s shooting and turn in its findings to the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
