A suspected killer is behind bars in Texas after an alleged would-be murder target told police he pretended to be dead in order to save his own life.

Eiber Gabriel Sira-Vargas, 29, was arrested in connection with the July killing of 19-year-old Alexis Jose Vegas, who was found by a stretch of road with multiple gunshot wounds. According to San Antonio ABC affiliate KSAT, a passerby spotted Vegas’ body near a drainage ditch off a stretch of southbound U.S. Highway 281 at around 3:30 p.m. on July 1. Police found shell casings and zip ties near the victim’s body — but no clues as to who the killer was.

More from Law&Crime: Wife makes daring escape after husband kidnaps her at gunpoint, flees in vehicle with suspect on top of car: Police

Investigators got a break in the case, however, when they learned about an armed robbery that left a man shot, injured, and hospitalized just hours before Vegas’ body was found. Local CBS affiliate KENS reported that the man, who has not been publicly identified, was initially “not forthcoming” with police, according to the arrest affidavit.

But he later revealed that he was with Vegas when he was killed. He and the victim had been kidnapped by three armed suspects and forced into a vehicle, KENS reported.

“While in the suspect’s vehicle, Witness 1 indicated that the suspect in the front passenger seat aimed a firearm at him throughout the ordeal,” the affidavit says, according to the report. “He was able to describe the location where the suspect vehicle stopped, which matched the scene of the crime.”

The kidnappers eventually stopped the car and told Vegas and the man to get out of the car. At that point, the man told police, the suspects opened fire, striking both of them with bullets.

The man said that he pretended to be dead until the suspects left, KENS reported.

He was later able to identify Sira-Vargas from a photo lineup.

According to court records, Sira-Vargas is charged with aggravated kidnapping with a deadly weapon and capital murder by terroristic threat or other felony. He has a pre-indictment hearing scheduled for Jan. 29, 2025.

“F–k that! Just kill me now!” a murder suspect told cops as they had him handcuffed on the floor of a Walmart this summer.

Cops in Albuquerque, New Mexico, said that the defendant Jamil Lewis, had been caught attempting to shoplift a holster from the store on July 29, according to The Albuquerque Journal. He allegedly slipped a gun into it, and then put it into his waistband. Weeks earlier on June 8, Lewis, had shot and killed Gerald Ibuado, 44, and injured the man’s brother, police said.

Body camera video obtained by Law&Crime shows police rushing over to Lewis at the superstore on July 29 and giving chase as he — wearing a red “Chucky”-themed sweatshirt and shorts — ran off.

“Hey, stop running!” said the officer. “I’m going to shoot you!”

Lewis eventually stopped and lay prone. The ensuing arrest is somewhat chaotic, as he tenses up and yells as three officers manhandle him into handcuffs. He questions why they are detaining him and complains about them searching him in the store, preferring it outside.

“Why?” an officer asked rhetorically. “So you can run?”

More Law&Crime Coverage: ‘I took a lot of s—‘: Woman arrested after shoplifting more than $1K from Walmart as part of ‘game,’ deputies say

“I’m not going to run,” he said. “You guys already got me in handcuffs.”

That is all timed at about 1:30 p.m. The tone changed less than an hour later. Footage shows a decidedly calmer Lewis sitting in the back of a police vehicle, handcuffed and smoking with police help.

Lewis lamented his situation.

“It’s going to affect my son,” he said in the video. “It’s going to affect my mom.”

Inset: Charlotte Lester (Warwick Police Department); Background: Mark Perkins, center, appears in court (WJAR/YouTube).

More than two years after a Rhode Island woman went missing, her remains were found and the man suspected of her murder was finally arrested.

Mark Perkins, 64, was taken into custody on Wednesday after his vehicle’s GPS data was connected to the location of 44-year-old Charlotte Lester’s skeletal remains, which were found on Nov. 17 and identified through dental records. According to the Warwick Police Department, Perkins had been on their radar from the beginning but they lacked the evidence needed to make an arrest.

Court documents obtained by Providence NBC affiliate WJAR detailed police evidence of Perkins’ activity in the days following Lester’s disappearance around May 16, 2022, when her landlord reported her missing. The documents reportedly described a witness from a convenience store who saw that Perkins allegedly had “blood on his hands and scratches and bite marks on his arm.”

Perkins allegedly told the witness that he and Lester, with whom he had a relationship, “had the blowout of the century” and described his house as “a blood bath.” He also told the witness, “I think I killed her,” the witness reported back to police.

Perkins was interviewed by police days later, on May 20. They reportedly noted that his hands were swollen but that he seemed to be “calm and unaffected” by Lester’s disappearance. He allegedly told the police that “she had stopped texting him and he did not know where she was,” CBS affiliate WPRI reported.

Warwick police then reportedly searched Perkins’ house and wrote in their report that they witnessed blood splatters on walls, the ceiling, door, and bedframe, and an apparently bloodstained shirt hanging on a clothesline in the basement over a bottle of bleach. Testing later reportedly showed the blood matched Perkins and likely Lester based on it matching the DNA profile of Lester’s mother.

The court documents also stated that Perkins followed Lester as she drove to another man’s house on May 16, 2022, the last day anyone saw her alive. Text messages from that night reportedly show Perkins writing Lester, asking her to return home from the other man’s house. On May 18, the day after he was allegedly seen bloodied and scratched up at the convenience store, Perkins was reportedly seen on video leaving his home in his truck with an object in the back and when he returned three hours later it was no longer there.

It was not until the discovery of Lester’s skull that investigators made the connection they needed. When police began looking at the GPS tracking data on Perkins’ truck, it allegedly showed he went to the area where the skull was found four times in four months — twice in July 2022 and twice in October 2022. In one of those trips, Lester’s remains were allegedly within 1,000 feet of the area where Perkins stopped his truck, according to GPS data.

Perkins was arrested in August 2022 for a completely unrelated case when he allegedly threatened a local radio personality with his lawn mower after being confronted about Lester’s disappearance.

Perkins was arraigned at Kent County District Court where he was formally charged with first-degree murder. He did not enter a plea and is being held without bail.

The Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday in a Facebook post that a suspect in the slaying of 35-year-old Dustin Kjersem is in jail on unrelated charges. Deputies did not name the suspect and said charges related to the murder are forthcoming.

More from Law&Crime: Man slit girlfriend’s wrists, left her body ‘on the couch while he watched television before going to bed’: DA

Kjersem was last seen alive the afternoon of Oct. 10. He was camping in the Moose Creek canyon area and slated to meet up with friends on Oct. 11, said Sheriff Dan Springer. When he didn’t show up, his friends went looking for him. They found his tent shortly after 10 a.m. on Oct. 12 about 2.5 miles up Moose Creek Road. They looked inside, and found his mutilated body, Springer said. The caller indicated that Kjersem may have been the victim of a bear attack.

But when a Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks agent investigated, he saw no bear activity around the scene. Detectives determined Kjersem died of “chop wounds” and was the victim of a homicide, Springer told reporters. Kjersem was well prepared for camping with a tent and other necessary equipment, according to Springer. While the area is remote, it is popular with hikers and campers, authorities say.

As investigators searched for a suspect, deputies released photos of the victim’s truck, along with a Yeti cooler and an ax. They did not say whether the axe was the murder weapon. After the arrest, the suspect led cops to the evidence “identified in prior press releases.”

The homicide put the community on edge.

“The investigation into this homicide continues. It is believed the suspect acted alone and there is no longer a threat to the community. Further details and charges are forthcoming, but it is important for this community to know they are safe to resume their outdoor activities,” deputies wrote Wednesday.

Kjersem’s sister Jillian Price said at the press conference that her brother was a hardworking and skilled tradesman who built and remodeled houses.

“We lost our brother, our son, our uncle, our best friend in the most unimaginable way,” she said. “He was a loving, helpful and adorning father who in no way deserved this.”

Updated: Police were questioning a suspect Wednesday afternoon after he was arrested following an explosion at the Santa Maria Courthouse in California.

The Wednesday morning explosion was caused by an improvised explosive device, the Santa Barbara County sheriff’s office said in a series of posts on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Police later identified the suspect as Nathaniel McGuire, 20, of Santa Maria, California, who had been scheduled for arraignment on a firearms charge on the day of the explosion.

McGuire allegedly threw a bag at a screening station when he entered the courthouse, causing an explosion in the hallway near the arraignment courtroom, according to a Sept. 25 press release by the Santa Barbara County sheriff’s office.

McGuire then ran to the parking lot, where he was detained by authorities, the sheriff’s office said. He was wearing body armor underneath his jacket when apprehended.

Six people injured in the explosion were treated and released from the Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria on Wednesday, the New York Times reports, citing information from a hospital spokesperson.

Darrel Parker, executive officer of the Santa Barbara Superior Court, said the injured people were thought to be bystanders, rather than court employees.

McGuire has been charged with felonies that include attempted murder, manufacturing an explosive device and use of an explosive device for attempted murder.

A witness at the courthouse, Shane Mellon, said he heard a loud bang, according to a report by KSBY cited by the Associated Press. The bailiff evacuated Mellon and others. In front of the courthouse, Mellon saw a smoldering sweater and saw a man screaming while four or five people were on top of him trying to restrain him.

“I think this could have been way worse than it was if not for the deputies just jumping on top of that guy,” Mellon told the broadcast station.

Other publications with early coverage of the explosion included Noozhawk and Reuters.

Updated Sept. 26 at 4:15 p.m. new information from the New York Times and the Santa Barbara County sheriff’s office’s press release.

The Burlington Police Department said a “significant fire engulfed the door and part of the vestibule” trapping several Sanders staffers inside.

The sprinkler system turned on which largely put out the fire. First responders evacuated the Sanders staffers as well as workers in surrounding offices. The door and vestibule received moderate damage while there was significant water damage to the area and floors below Sanders’ office, cops said.

Burlington police released a photo of the suspect on Friday and officials had him arrested less than 48 hours later. A motive for the fire hasn’t been released. Sanders was in California speaking to striking hotel workers on Friday.

If convicted, Soghomonian faces between 5 years and 20 years in prison along with a fine of up to $250,000.

“We are grateful to the Burlington Fire and Police Departments who responded immediately today to a fire incident that took place in our office building,” Kathryn Van Haste, the Vermont state director for Senator Sanders, said in a statement to the New York Times.

Burlington Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak in a statement to CNN thanked law enforcement for bringing a “swift resolution” to the investigation.

“My office has offered the support of the Burlington Community Justice Center to Senator Sanders’s staff, and we will continue to be in close communication as their office navigates the impacts of this incident,” she said.

A Georgia police officer has been indicted on charges that he deliberately failed to investigate his half brother as a potential suspect in a murder case.

D’Marquivius “D.J.” King, 25, has been indicted on a felony count of Violation of Oath of Office, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced Friday. The indictment stems from the result of an investigation launched in February of last year over King’s handling of the investigation into the murder of a man named Javarreis Reid, who was shot to death in May 2021 at age 25.

King had been assigned to the case — but according to the GBI, he failed to fulfill his obligation as a police investigator.

“The investigation shows that King, while employed as an investigator with the Griffin Police Department, discovered that his brother, Damon Beck, was involved in the murder of Reid,” the GBI statement says. “King failed to properly investigate the murder.”

A Spalding County grand jury heard evidence on March 20, the statement said, and returned the indictment. On March 22, King turned himself in and was booked into the Spading County Jail, according to the GBI.

The indictment comes more than a year after concerns were first raised about King’s role in the matter. As Atlanta ABC affiliate WSB reported, King failed to properly investigate after learning his brother, Damon Beck, was potentially involved in Reid’s murder.
wsb
Local NBC affiliate WXIA reported that internal records showed King’s brother, Damon Beck, was a suspect in Reid’s murder — and he didn’t tell anyone.

“It was determined during the investigation that Investigator King’s brother Damon Beck is involved in the murder,” an internal reprimand from November 2021 states, according to WXIA. “Investigator King failed to notify his chain of command of the conflict of interest and did not list Damon Beck as a suspect on any documentation.”

The reprimand said that King was in violation of the department policy that police department employees have a duty “not to give false or misleading information.”

Then-police chief Michael Yates said at the time that Beck was King’s half brother and the two had never lived together, and that King’s only wrongdoing was “poor documentation of his casework,” WXIA reported. Yates was placed on “non-disciplinary, administrative leave” in April 2023 and retired shortly after, the WXIA story said.

King was put on administrative leave on Feb. 27, 2023, as the GBI investigation was underway. He resigned from the police department in September, WXIA reported.

His resignation came after the district attorney’s office wrote in a September 2023 letter to Griffin City Manager Jessica O’Connor that the investigation into King and Yates revealed “policy violations” by both men.

“These violations are egregious enough to have destroyed my Office’s confidence in both Officer King and Chief Yates to effectively perform their duties,” the letter said, adding that prosecutors could no longer rely on King as a witness.

Beck, meanwhile, wasn’t apprehended until 2023, at which point he was accused of murder and aggravated assault. He is one of three defendants in the case and is currently being held in the Spalding County Jail on $750,000 bond, WSB reported.

King joined the force in 2017. As WXIA reported, he was considered a rising star in the department, and had even been the focus of a promotional segment by the city in which he spoke enthusiastically about his job.

Spalding County jail records did not indicate whether King was in custody as of Sunday.

The charge of Violation of Duty is punishable in Georgia by a sentence of one to five years in prison.

Yesnin Salvador Bonilla-Iscoa is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Maria De Los Angeles Paulino. He allegedly stabbed her 16 times on May 10, 2023 in Orlando, Florida. (Orange County Sheriff’s Office)

Authorities used discarded cans of iced tea to obtain the DNA of a man in Texas to tie him to a murder in Florida.

Yesnin Salvador Bonilla-Iscoa, 30, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of 52-year-old Maria De Los Angeles Paulino.

Paulino’s boyfriend called 911 after he discovered Paulino unresponsive with “obvious signs of trauma” in her car in Orange County, Florida, around 12:19 p.m. on May 10, a probable cause arrest affidavit reviewed by Law&Crime said. Paulino’s sister had contacted the boyfriend to say they hadn’t heard from her. After calling her several times to no avail, the boyfriend pinged her cellphone on the Find My iPhone app and learned she was in an area in northern Orange County.

The boyfriend went to the location where he found her body.

He told deputies he had last talked to her about 7 p.m. the night before. While deputies were on the scene investigating, a bystander came up to say he saw a bloody knife wrapped in a cloth down the street. Cops determined the knife was used to stab Paulino 16 times and had her blood on it.

Security camera footage at Paulino’s apartment complex showed she left around 3:18 a.m. the day she was murdered. Her cellphone, which was recovered at the scene, was analyzed and showed someone called her about 3:11 a.m. and she returned the call about 25 minutes later. It was the last activity on her phone before she died.

The phone number belonged to Bonilla-Iscoa. It was saved under the contact “Abaca Rd Y Rose Av,” which is a location close to where she was found dead, according to investigators. Detectives also analyzed Bonilla-Oscoa’s phone number, which showed he was in the area at the time of the murder, deputies said. The affidavit did not give a motive for the slaying.

Police learned Bonilla-Oscoa had moved to Lubbock, Texas, to live with her sister after the murder. Lubbock police conducted surveillance on the suspect and collected discarded aluminum iced tea cans in hopes of obtaining his DNA. On Nov. 21, a lab test determined there was a match between the DNA from the cans to the DNA found on the murder weapon.

Bonilla-Oscoa was arrested. He was extradited to Florida on Tuesday. He’s being held in the Orange County Jail without bond.
