Two men in Florida are heading to prison — with each of them getting hit with a life sentence last week — for a horrific 2020 kidnapping in which they abducted three people and “tortured” them in the back of a U-Haul rental van before executing two of them, while one of the victims “miraculously survived,” according to prosecutors.

James Edward Daniels, 59, and Frederick Eugene Rudolph, 69, both of Miami, were sentenced to life in prison last Tuesday for the shooting deaths of Osmar Oliva, 50, and Johan Gonzalez Quesada, 26, in December 2020. The pair was convicted last year of conspiracy to commit kidnapping resulting in death, multiple counts of kidnapping resulting in death, and kidnapping, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida. A third defendant, Herbert Barr, pleaded guilty to kidnapping and was sentenced to 12 and a half years in prison followed by five years of supervised release.

“On Dec. 5, 2020, Daniels, Rudolph, Barr and other co-conspirators kidnapped three victims from a truck yard in Opa-locka, Fla.,” the attorney’s office said in a press release last week. “They bound and tortured the victims, duct-taped their eyes and threw them in the back of a rented van after stealing the victims’ drugs. They drove around the city for hours before taking the victims to an abandoned house in Opa-locka and attempting to execute them by shooting the three victims. Two of the victims died, while one miraculously survived.”

The victim who lived was airlifted to the hospital and made a full recovery, according to prosecutors. In addition to attacking and torturing them, Miami-Dade police reported that the trio had also been robbed.

“Daniels stole jewelry from one of the murdered victims,” prosecutors explained. “And all defendants benefitted by receiving drugs, money, or both, in exchange for their participation in the conspiracy.”

Records show Daniels and Rudolph were also indicted on unrelated drug distribution charges in July 2022. In that case, a judge sentenced Rudolph to 11 years in prison and Daniels to 35 months in prison, or just under three years. The men were indicted for the kidnapping case in November 2023. Neither is a stranger to the criminal justice system, with Daniels’ Florida Department of Corrections incarceration history dating back 40 years. Rudolph was on probation for a drug-related charge at the time of the murders, records show.

The investigation into the 2020 kidnapping and shootings was conducted by the South Florida High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Task Force.

A bedridden 80-year-old in Oregon was killed and stuffed into a suitcase after her house was taken over by squatters, with cops and friends saying they turned it into a “base of operations to commit crimes” — including the woman’s murder and “abuse” of her corpse.

“She didn’t even know who was living there,” said one of Judy Hurley’s only reported acquaintances, Justin Misner, who spoke to local Fox affiliate KPTV about the octogenarian’s death this month at the hands of 54-year-old Michael Moody, who was arrested Thursday and charged with second-degree murder.

“I was disgusted and it’s horrible,” said Misner’s partner, Leslie Ortiz. “Nobody deserves to go that way regardless of your history.”

Almost a year after her last confirmed sighting, a homeless woman was found stuffed dead in a suitcase. Now investigators in Seattle, Washington, are working to officially determine how Shannon Marie Caslin Reeder, 37, died and to figure out who put her in the suitcase.

“It was absolutely one of the most heinous, disgusting things that I’ve ever heard,” Tim Emerson, program director for We Heart Seattle, a homeless outreach group, according to Seattle ABC affiliate KOMO. “It’s hard to believe that a human being could do something like that to another human.”

The discovery happened amid a separate incident in which in which a man was shot and injured near a homeless encampment in the area of Dr. Jose Rizal Park in Seattle. Law enforcement and outreach workers moved to clear out the encampment, but on Sept. 27, those workers discovered the suitcase and the horrifying remains in a trash pile.

Emerson reportedly said violence was not unusual in the area.

“There’s always a worry and a concern,” he said. “You always just have to be smart, watch your backs and know who you’re dealing with and when to walk away.”

A Missouri man will spend the rest of his life — and then some — behind bars for stuffing a young woman into a suitcase and discarding her remains in an Illinois wildlife refuge in 2020, a court recently ruled.

James A. Merritt, 35, hails from Morehouse, Missouri — a tiny town just miles away from the borders of several adjoining states. His victim, Haley Marie Decker, 18, hailed from Normal, Illinois — a medium-sized city that forms part of the Bloomington-Normal metropolitan area and nearly four hours due north of Morehouse.

In January, he was convicted on one count each of murder in the second degree, armed criminal action, tampering with physical evidence, and trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation, according to the Illinois State Police.

Earlier this month, Circuit Judge Joshua Underwood sentenced Merritt to life in prison plus an additional 29 years and a $25,000 fine.
