Hayim Cohen in 2023 (Law&Crime).

Hayim Cohen gained notoriety on YouTube and TikTok as a rabbi who took in children and cared for them. As time went on, the 40-year-old Texas man told his followers that he suffered from an illness and was in hospice.

But it turned out that, apparently, Cohen was neither terminally ill nor a rabbi — and he was sexually abusing his adopted sons.

On Monday, a Houston judge sentenced Cohen to 40 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to four counts of continuous sexual assault of a child and one count of indecency with a child.

“You realize you are never going to get out of prison, you’re going to die in prison?” Judge Lanilo Lacayo asked Cohen.

The defendant continued to feign illness during the sentencing hearing, not answering Lacayo when he asked him his age.

“I know you understand everything I’ve said to you from the beginning to the end,” Lacayo said, according to local CBS affiliate KHOU. “You ran an interesting con, sir. You violated all these boys and you’re here today facing justice.”

Houston police detectives began investigating when one of the victims called into an Atlanta-based podcast on a burner phone and detailed the abuse. The podcaster contacted authorities.

Police arrested Cohen in February 2023 on allegations that he had abused six of his nine adopted sons. When they went to his house they were met with a hospice care provider purportedly looking after Cohen. However, when detectives took him to two hospitals, doctors could find nothing medically wrong with him.

More from Law&Crime: ‘I thought my child was safe’: School janitor who rubbed private parts on cafeteria utensils, sprayed bleach on cucumbers learns fate

Being in jail has apparently not stopped Cohen from continuing to fake his sickness. In a hearing about a month after his arrest, he showed up in a wheelchair and a urine drainage bag. On Monday, he appeared in court with a shaved head and face, looking like he had lost a significant amount of weight. He was still in a wheelchair.

Prosecutors still believe he is mostly faking his illness.

But for the victims, Monday was about justice.

“It feels like justice has been done for the seven boys,” Harris County Assistant District Attorney Jana Oswald told the Houston Chronicle. “I feel that justice has been done for them and they don’t have to get up and testify and recount everything that they’ve experienced by him. That’s a relief for myself and for them.”

Two of the victims filed a lawsuit earlier this year against Texas’ Child Protective Services and other agencies claiming they failed to properly vet Cohen prior to him adopting the kids.

“I think that the whole system of adoption and foster care in Texas is just awful,” one of the boys’ attorneys, Sheryl Chandler, told the Chronicle. “Cohen should never have been able to adopt one child, let alone nine. A single person, who had no job, who claims to be a Jewish rabbi and is not, and they just kept putting more and more kids in his care.”

“This family has suffered an unspeakable tragedy and this civil suit has been initiated to protect the family and their legal rights,” said the plaintiff statement, according to The Brunswick News. “The Barrons kindly request that their privacy be respected during this difficult time. Our firm generally does not comment on pending litigation and this is particularly true in a case like this, where an investigation is still ongoing. Therefore, we have no further comment at this time.”

Staffers at Northeast Georgia Medical Center Gainesville pronounced him dead. Mericle, who runs the Mericle Dentistry, is charged with felony murder, aggravated assault under the Family Violence Act, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

According to the lawsuit, the couple had lived together at a home on the 4200 block of Bayridge Drive in the city of Gainesville, Georgia. She allegedly got into an argument with Barron on the night of the shooting.

“At no relevant time did Decedent Barron ever physically assault or batter Defendant Mericle,” the complaint said. “During the argument, Decedent Barron removed himself from the argument and retreated to an upstairs bedroom locking himself inside.”

Mericle allegedly got a gun, and as Barron was locked inside the bedroom, Mericle “negligently and/or intentionally fired at least one shot through the closed door of the bedroom.”

This fatally wounded him, but he lingered.

“Decedent Barron did not die instantaneously from the gunshot wound(s),” the complaint stated. “Instead, Decedent Barron lived for at least several minutes after he was shot, and he experienced extreme mental and physical conscious pain and suffering from the time he was shot until the time he ultimately passed away.”

Inset: Saiy-Yah Allen (Royal Funeral Service, Inc.). Background: Saiy-Yah died years after hitting his head on a cart in a Walmart in Florida (WTVJ).

The Florida mother of a 9-year-old boy who died years after hitting his head on a metal cart in Walmart is suing the megastore for allegedly creating a dangerous and unsafe condition that led to the boy’s death.

Tamika Springer is seeking damages beyond $30,000 in the death of her son, Saiy-Yah Allen, according to the complaint.

During testimony in the trial on Tuesday, Saiy-Yah’s sister spoke about her brother’s seizures in the years after the incident at a Fort Lauderdale location on Nov. 25, 2020, when the then-7-year-old boy walked into a metal stock cart and struck his head in a walkway.

“He would shake a lot and he would look in a different direction, and then he would shake and make noise, too,” Miharah Allen said. “Every time he ate, he would throw up, he would throw the food up or use the bathroom on himself.”

The testimony came as Walmart attorneys questioned whether his injury then led to his seizures and death on May 7, 2023, local NBC affiliate WTVJ reported.

A media representative for Walmart did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Law&Crime. The company said in court documents the boy was not looking where he was going when he walked into the cart.

“Walmart is not liable for the incident as the stock cart was so open and obvious that S.A. should have been reasonably expected to discover it and protect himself (by simply walking around it), and a stock cart is so obvious and not inherently dangerous that it can be said, as a matter of law, not to constitute a dangerous condition that will not give rise to liability due to the failure to maintain the premises in a reasonably safe condition,” the defendant’s motion for summary judgment said. “Here, unfortunately, S.A. was inattentive and failed to walk around a stock cart’s handles that were observed by his sister, who was not walking with her head turned. S.A. failed to use his senses and was walking while looking backward, therefore he did not observe the open, obvious, and innocuous stock cart.”

Saiy-Yah’s obituary said he loved to draw, paint and make origami.

“He often made origami birds and drawings for our friends and even random people he came in contact with. His eyes and smile lit the entire universe! He did everything with the utmost pride and precision. We all told him how brilliant and genius he is and how his talents will only get greater.”

James Crumbley - Day Two" width="760" height="428" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/4U0rD3bppZs?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen>

The trial of James Crumbley — father of Oxford High School shooter Ethan Crubley — continued with an emotional second day of testimony on Friday, one day after the convicted murderer’s father had his telephone privileges suspended for allegedly making threatening statements. As the proceedings came to a close, prosecutors played footage of the heinous mass shooting that appeared to leave James Crumbley in tears.

James Crumbley is charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter in connection with his son’s deadly rampage, which took place on Nov. 30, 2021. Oxford students Tate Myre, 16, Hana St. Juliana, 14, Madisyn Baldwin, 17, and Justin Shilling, 17, were killed when the then-15-year-old Ethan Crumbley opened fire on classmates and teachers inside of the school.

Prosecutors have argued that James Crumbley and his wife, Jennifer Crumbley, knew their son was troubled and failed to take any action to prevent the mass shooting. They had been called to the school the day of the shooting after teachers discovered disturbing and violent drawings he had made in a math workbook. The parents ultimately left the school after meeting with school officials and their son, while Ethan Crumbley stayed behind.

Jennifer Crumbley was convicted on the same charges in February. She is scheduled to be sentenced on April 9.

Footage of the shooting was shown during testimony from Oxford High School assistant principal Kristy Gibson-Marshall, who narrated the footage as played on a screen in the witness box. The administrator recounted seeing the shooter in the hallway and looking him in the eyes before he turned away from her. She then saw one of his victims on the ground and tried to resuscitate them.

“As he walked by I asked him if he was OK, what was going on,” Gibson-Marshall said. “He looked away from me, and I knew for sure he was the shooter because he would’ve talked to me if he were not.”

Courtroom footage provided by Law&Crime pans to James Crumbley — who is also able to see the video — at about 5:36:30. He appears to be crying and dabbing tears away from his eyes with a tissue.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday said that James Crumbley’s access to telephone and electronic communications had been restricted following the first day of his trial because he allegedly made threatening statements while in jail, Detroit Fox affiliate WJBK reported.

“His access to a phone or electronic messaging is now limited to communication with his lawyer,” the sheriff’s office told the station.

Authorities did not provide details about who James Crumbley is alleged to have threatened.

Ethan Crumbley, now 17, pleaded guilty in October to all 24 charges against him, including murder and terrorism. He was sentenced to a lifetime in prison without the possibility of parole.

Left: Jordan Piper; Right: Roman Lopez. (El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office)

A California man who, along with his wife, murdered their 11-year-old son, secreted away the child’s body and then reported him missing, will spend at least a decade-and-a-half in prison.

On Thursday, Jordan Thomas Piper, 38, was sentenced by an El Dorado County judge to a term of 15 years to life in prison for the murder of Roman Anthony Lopez, whose corpse was discovered hidden in a storage bin in the family’s basement on Jan. 11, 2020.

In late October 2023, Jordan Piper admitted to his part in Roman’s death, taking a plea deal for one count of murder in the second degree.

At first, the boy’s father and adoptive mother, Lindsay Piper, 40, insisted they were innocent and pleaded not guilty to various crimes connected to Lopez’s death. Their facades didn’t last long.

In February 2021, the couple was charged with torture and child abuse over Lopez’s death. Jordan Piper was accused of willfully failing to provide food and water; Lindsay Piper was accused of poisoning the boy. In October 2021, they were charged with murder.

An autopsy would eventually show that Lopez had been severely malnourished and dehydrated until he died. He weighed 42 pounds at the time of his death. Medical records from two years before he died, relatively healthier times, showed that he weighed 61 pounds. Those 2018 records catalog the last time he ever saw a doctor.

In addition to the intentional starvation regime, Lopez was regularly beaten and restrained to his bed at night using zip ties.

The Pipers first pleaded absolute ignorance to the press.

“We have no idea what happened, where they found him, what the autopsy report said, if that’s even done, any suspects, nothing,” Jordan Piper told The Sacramento Bee in an exclusive interview that ran on Feb. 4, 2021. “We have nothing.”

Seeking some plausible reason the boy was found dead in their basement just hours after he was reported missing, the Pipers gave the newspaper a story about a boy who loved to hide all over.

The next day, the couple were initially charged.

“Lindsay Marie Piper willfully and unlawfully mingled a poison and harmful substance with food, drink, medicine and pharmaceutical product,” the stepmother’s criminal complaint alleged.

In May 2022, Lindsay Piper changed her “not guilty” plea to “no contest” on one charge of murder in the second degree. She was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison in July 2022.

Judge Vicki Ashworth upbraided the defendant just before sentencing, saying she “didn’t deserve to be [Roman’s] stepmother, quite frankly” and “the court can think of no more evil person than that,” in comments reported by Sacramento CBS affiliate KOVR.

Jordan Piper’s plea was changed from not guilty to guilty. Appearing in the El Dorado County Superior Court, he was convicted the same day, according to the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office. He was originally set to be sentenced last November.

Problems with a Zoom call precluded that original sentencing date to go forward, according to Sacramento NBC affiliate KCRA.

Reprising her chiding tone for the child’s father, Ashworth said it was Jordan Piper’s job to fashion a child into a man, the Bee reported.

“You absolutely utterly and completely not only failed in that respect, but it was at your hands that he was abused to the point where he had bruises on his wrist from being zip-tied to his bed,” the judge said. “He was zip-tied at times in the closet, was given an over amount of sodium or salt in his diet, forced to wear diapers at the age of 11 years old.”

Roman Lopez’s mother, Rochelle Lopez, died in 2021, after a long custody battle for the boy that was waged across several states — but ultimately to no good end. In a witness impact statement, one of Lopez’s friends alleged that Jordan Piper had abused the child for years before he died.

“It wasn’t as if he was a human being to yourself and Ms. Piper but rather an object and nothing more,” Ashworth told the condemned man on Thursday. “An inconvenience, if you will.”

In the Golden State, the maximum sentence for a conviction on a second-degree murder charge is 15 years to life in prison.

“It was a strategic decision,” Deputy District Attorney Jay Linden said after the hearing, in comments reported by KCRA. “You balance the things. You want to get closure. You want certainty. You want justice.”

The change of plea came one day after Jordan Piper was sentenced to spend 15 years behind bars in a federal child sexual exploitation case for making “surreptitious recordings” of a girl under 18. He was charged by federal prosecutors for that offense in June 2022.

The two cases are unrelated, but the child sexual exploitation investigation was a product of the murder investigation.

While investigating Lopez’s murder, the Placerville Police Department seized various digital devices from the Piper household. They discovered child sexual abuse materials produced between October 2019 and January 2020 in Tuolumne and El Dorado counties.

“Approximately 433 nude images of Minor Victim 1 were found on Jordan Piper’s cell phone in the cache and screenshots section of the phone, as well as cache folders and screenshot folders in a secure folder on the phone,” federal agents wrote in a criminal complaint. “Many of those images created by Jordan Piper were focused shots of Minor Victim 1’s genitals or pubic area. In addition, the video camera was placed in a manner to maximize the chances of recording the genitals of Minor Victim 1 and other users of the bathroom.”

Per the terms of his plea agreement, Jordan Piper’s murder sentence will be served concurrently with his sex crime sentence.

“I hope when the defendant goes to sleep every night he hears echoes of Roman screaming at the top of his lungs, in fear, in hurt, and in terrified wails much like he did the night before his death,” Erin Rice, a friend of Roman’s mother, said at the hearing, CBS News reported.

“He’s a monster. He’s manipulative, and he is selfish,” Rice said in comments reported by the Bee. “He’s a shell of a man with no moral compass or value. He knew what he was doing was wrong and did it anyway for years and did nothing to stop it.”
