A Kentucky judge who was gunned down in his chambers by a local sheriff was allegedly “running a brothel” out of his courtroom, according to a witness from a separate criminal case, with her claim being played up as a “compelling defense” for the shooting in court.

“He does have some videotapes of some stuff in the judge’s chambers,” alleged witness Sabrina Adkins told police in an audio recording obtained by NewsNation from a criminal case involving one of ex-sheriff Shawn Stines’ old deputies, Ben Fields, who was convicted and sentenced this year to six months in jail — and nearly a decade of probation — for rape, sodomy, perjury and tampering with a prisoner monitoring device, according to The Mountain Eagle.

“Just with girls, sexual and stuff,” Adkins said. “I’ve seen one partly. … Him [Fields] having sex with girls for their bail for them to get out of jail. Ben and just some higher ups up there.”

Adkins, a defendant who was placed on house arrest, claimed in the audio recording that the footage she saw showed slain U.S. District Judge Kevin Mullins having sex with women in exchange for special treatment. She filed a federal lawsuit in January 2022 and Stines — a close friend of Mullins’ for roughly three decades — had just been deposed in the ongoing case on Sep. 16, three days before the shooting, according to the Louisville Courier Journal.

“I seen Judge Mullins having sex with a girl … in the judge’s chambers,” Adkins told police during the Fields investigation, noting how she had sex with Fields once in the office.

Adkins outlined what she allegedly went through in the complaint for her civil suit, saying Mullins’ chambers served as a secret haven for Fields and others due to the fact that there weren’t any surveillance cameras present.

“There were no cameras,” the complaint says. It describes how Fields allegedly took off Adkins’ ankle monitor and told her she “would not have to pay the associated fees any longer, but could remain out on home incarceration” if she performed sexual favors for him.

According to the complaint, Fields met Adkins at least six times in Mullins’ chambers to receive those favors.

“During these meetings, Defendant Fields’ behavior escalated from flirtatious comments to forcible kissing, to oral sex, to intercourse with Plaintiff, all of which occurred at the Letcher County Courthouse after hours, in Judge Mullins’ Chambers,” the complaint says. “Plaintiff was coerced and compelled to comply with Defendant Fields’ advances given Defendant Fields’ position of power, and because she could not afford to pay for the ankle monitor and did not want to return to the Letcher County Jail.”

Late last month, Adkins’ claim was brought up in court — as was the Fields case — by Stines’ defense lawyer, Jeremy Bartley, who believes Adkins’ police interview and Stines’ deposition in her civil case are “going to be crucial” in defending the former lawman.

“I do believe that that is a piece,” Bartley said at a Nov. 25 hearing. “This is a large story. It’s a story that, in some ways, is difficult to tell. We look forward to sharing a more complete version of that as we go through this judicial process.”

Speaking to NewsNation on Friday, Adkins’ attorney Ned Pillersdorf said he wasn’t surprised by Bartley’s emphasis on his client’s civil suit and claims to police.

“It’s like they were running a brothel out of that courtroom,” Pillersdorf said.

During his deposition, Stines allegedly denied having any involvement in the sextortion scheme that Fields and Mullins are accused of being part of. He said he didn’t find out until after the lawsuit was filed, according to the Courier Journal.

While the circumstances surrounding Mullins’ death are still unclear, investigators do know that the two of them got into a verbal dispute before the shooting.

“We know that it was an argument between the two … but what exactly transpired prior to the shots being fired, that’s still something we’re trying to get answers to,” State Trooper Matt Gayheart told reporters in September, according to local news affiliate WJHL.

Stines allegedly walked into the courthouse that day and told employees and others who were there that he needed to talk to Mullins alone before the two entered the judge’s chambers. Stines allegedly shot the judge, then surrendered to police. He has pleaded not guilty to murder of a public official.

A 26-year-old man in Tennessee is facing a possible life sentence for allegedly killing his 22-year-old ex-girlfriend, a medical student who was fatally shot was participating in a walk benefiting the American Cancer Society over the weekend. Jackson Hopper was taken into custody on Sunday and charged with one count of first-degree murder in the cold-blooded slaying of Ellie Young, authorities announced.

Young, a medical student at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, had been attending the “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” event at the park.

According to a probable cause affidavit, deputies with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office at about 12:19 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19, responded to a call about a recent homicide at the Shelby Farms Visitor’s Center in the 6900 block of Great View Drive North in Memphis.

Upon arriving at the scene, first responders said they located an adult female — later identified as Young — on the ground near her Jeep Wrangler suffering from what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel on the scene pronounced Young dead at about 12:36 p.m., the affidavit states.

“Witnesses stated that they observed the victim parked in a parking space on the lot. A white Honda CRV with a Kentucky Temp Tag pulled behind the victim’s Jeep,” the affidavit states. “The male white driver of the Honda CRV fired two shots into the back of the Jeep occupied by the victim. The victim came out of the Jeep Wrangler and the male white suspect fired at least one more shot into the victim as she lay on the ground. The suspect then re-entered the white Honda and left the scene.”

Investigators processing the crime scene said they recovered five 9 mm shell casings and three live 9 mm rounds from the area.

License plate readers monitoring the park entrance showed that Young arrived at about 12:11 p.m. with the white Honda CRV following “within a few seconds.”

A witness at the scene was able to get a photograph of the CRV’s license plate during the shooting which authorities said matched the vehicle that followed Young into the parking lot.

Several of the victim’s family members arrived at the scene shortly after police and advised investigators that Young had recently broken up with her boyfriend, whom they identified as Hopper.

A BOLO (be on the lookout) was issued for the Honda CRV to multiple law enforcement agencies. The vehicle was located and pursued by officers with the Mason, Tennessee, Police Department and deputies with the Tipton County Sheriff’s Office. During the pursuit, the vehicle crashed in Dyer County and the driver, whom authorities identified as Hopper, was taken into custody.

Authorities said that a 9 mm handgun was recovered from the scene of the crash.

Hopper was booked into the downtown Shelby County Jail where he is currently being held without bond. He appeared in court on Monday where he pleaded not guilty to murder, court records reviewed by Law&Crime show. Hopper is currently scheduled to appear in court again on Tuesday for a bond review hearing.

The sheriff’s office said that additional charges against Hopper may be forthcoming.

A GoFundMe page to help with Young’s funeral and memorial costs can be found here.

“A beautiful soul inside and out, Ellie dedicated her life towards serving others, and was well on her way to becoming an incredible physician,” the page states. “She was walking sunshine, and the world is now a darker place without her.”

Inset: Vem Miller (News Nation). Background: Donald Trump speaking at his campaign rally in Coachella, California (Forbes).

The 49-year-old Nevada man who was arrested at Donald Trump’s California rally on Saturday while carrying two loaded firearms has filed a federal lawsuit claiming the county and sheriff violated his constitutional rights and publicly lied about the incident when authorities said they had stopped him from attempting to assassinate the former president.

Vem Miller on Tuesday filed the lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for Nevada in which he names Riverside County, the sheriff’s office, and Sheriff Chad Bianco as defendants. Among the causes of action for seeking damages, Miller alleges he was subjected to deprivation of his civil rights, intentional infliction of emotional distress, defamation, and false light invasion of privacy.

Miller, who was charged with one misdemeanor count each of possession of a loaded firearm and possession of a high-capacity magazine, says he is a “staunch supporter” of Trump and a Republican candidate for the Nevada Assembly who had no intention of harming the former president.

In a news release, the sheriff’s office said that at about 5 p.m. on Oct. 12, deputies assigned to Trump’s rally in Coachella Valley stopped Miller at a checkpoint and found him to be “illegally in possession of a shotgun, a loaded handgun, and a high-capacity magazine.”

In a subsequent news conference, Bianco said that he “probably did have deputies that prevented a third assassination attempt” against Trump.

Miller says that the sheriff’s has merely been perpetuating a “delusional and false narrative.”

In the filed complaint, Miller claims that he was attempting to enter a parking lot about half a mile from the rally venue when he informed a deputy guarding the area that he had two firearms in his vehicle, both of which he intended to leave inside of his parked vehicle. Miller says he was almost immediately handcuffed and placed into the back of a patrol vehicle.

Despite not receiving permission to look inside the vehicle, Miller says deputies then “proceeded to conduct an unlawful and unconstitutional search of all compartments of the vehicle, retrieving Miller’s personal documentation and other personal items.”

Miller alleges that Sheriff Bianco — who is also an avid Trump supporter — then began making false and defamatory claims about the incident.

“Immediately after Miller’s arrest, Defendant Bianco did not miss an opportunity to fabricate allegations against Miller, going on numerous news outlets, claiming to have thwarted a third assassination attempt against Presidential Candidate Donald J. Trump,” the complaint states. “Defendant Bianco, knew that Miller was not charged with any wrongdoing concerning assassination attempts, and that United States Secret Service and FBI agents even declined to interview him. It became clear that Bianco, intentionally, maliciously and with a blatant disregard for the truth, wanted to create a narrative so as to be viewed as a ‘heroic’ Sheriff who saved Presidential candidate Trump from a third assassination attempt.”

The complaint further claims that the sheriff made “preposterous allegations” against Miller, including that he was in possession of multiple fake passports and driver’s licenses, was driving an unregistered vehicle with fake plates, and presented authorities with “a fake VIP and press passes.”

The suit states that the latter claim is the “most egregious” because Miller “was actually provided expedited special entry passes by the Trump 47 campaign directly.”

Miller’s Instagram page shows him posing in photos with multiple Trump-aligned figures such as Stephen Miller, Newt Gingrich, Robert Kennedy Jr., and Roger Stone, among others.

By repeating the alleged false accusations against Miller, the suit claims that he has suffered “irreparable harm” to his character and reputation.

The case has not yet been assigned a hearing date.

Have a tip we should know? [email protected]

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Bureau of Land Management, in partnership with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, will offer four saddle-trained wild horses for adoption, in a virtual event via Zoom on Thursday, Aug. 15, at 6 p.m.

Those with approved BLM adoption applications can view the horses in person at the Rio Cosumnes Correctional Facility, 12500 Bruceville Road, Elk Grove, on Saturday, Aug. 10, from 9 a.m. to noon. Winning bidders will pick up their horses on Saturday, Aug. 17, at times to be arranged at the above Elk Grove location.

Anyone interested in participating in the online event must first complete a BLM adoption application available online and then email it to Amy Dumas, manager of the BLM-California Wild Horse and Burro Program, at adumas@blm.gov. After approval, applicants will receive registration information and a bidder number for the Zoom event. For personal security purposes, the BLM advises against listing Social Security numbers or driver’s license numbers on the application. A BLM representative will contact applicants via phone for that required information.

To qualify, adopters must be at least 18 years old and have facilities that meet the BLM’s requirements. Title to the animals remains with the federal government for a year, after which adopters can apply for title. Detailed information about adopter qualifications and facility requirements are available from the BLM’s Wild Horse and Burro Program.

The BLM and Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office have been partners in this program since 2013. Inmates at the Rio Cosumnes Correctional Facility train mustangs to saddle, providing adopters with a solid foundation on which to build additional training. Details and photos of horses up for adoption are available at https://www.blm.gov/californiaR3Cwildhorseadoption.

The BLM is responsible under the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act for protecting and managing wild horses and burros on public lands. The agency periodically removes animals from the range when populations exceed levels established to allow wild horse and burro herds to thrive in balance with other range users, including wildlife and permitted livestock. These animals are then available for adoption at events throughout the country.

There is more information about the BLM’s Wild Horse and Burro Program online.

Inset: Justin Avery (Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office).

An Arizona man facing assault charges is potentially in even more trouble after allegedly sneaking around jail guards in order to commit sexual assault.

Justin Avery had been detained in April for allegedly assaulting multiple women near the Tempe campus of Arizona State University, Phoenix ABC affiliate KNXV reported. Video released by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office appears to show Avery at the Intake Transfer and Release Facility days after his arrest, crawling backward along the edge of an official’s desk.

According to reports, Avery did successfully reach his target, allegedly making his way behind a woman who was asleep and lowering his pants.

Another woman who witnessed Avery’s actions allegedly told him to “get off her,” and Avery allegedly responded by telling the woman to be quiet. The exchange got the attention of an officer, who then called for backup.

He reportedly told police that he had crawled like a “spider” toward his intended target. He also — in crude language — told investigators that he was drawn to the woman’s physical appearance and that he did indeed intend to “rape” her, KNXV reported, citing court records.

Avery was subsequently charged with an additional count of sexual assault.

More from Law&Crime: Dozens of Inmates Raped, Assaulted, and Harassed After Jailer Sold Male Prisoner a Key to Women’s Wing, Federal Lawsuit Claims

Maricopa County authorities say the situation involving Avery is extremely unusual.

“We’re appalled by inmate Avery’s actions at our [Intake Transfer and Release] facility,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement emailed to Law&Crime. “This was a unique incident and the first of its kind in four years, since the ITR facility was open.”

The sheriff’s office said that mirrors have been added “for better monitoring in the blind spots that were identified,” and a review of procedures was conducted.

“The safety of staff and inmates is our top priority, and we’re committed to ensuring this doesn’t happen again,” the statement said, adding: “Inmate Avery has been reclassified due to his institutional behavior.”

According to court documents, Avery has a court hearing scheduled for Tuesday.

Cynthia Ann Ray (Lake County Sheriff’s Office)

A 38-year-old woman in Florida was arrested last week for allegedly threatening to kill her ex-boyfriend and his new girlfriend if the couple did not have a threesome with her. Cynthia Ann Ray was taken into custody on Christmas Day and charged with one count of aggravated stalking and one count of written threats to kill, court records reviewed by Law&Crime show.

According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by Law&Crime, deputies with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office at about 8:30 p.m. on the night of Dec. 25 responded to a 911 call about a report of criminal mischief at a home located in Groveland. Upon arriving at the scene, first responders immediately encountered an adult male who identified himself as Ray’s ex-boyfriend and explained Ray had been harassing him in inappropriate ways.

The boyfriend prefaced his latest complaints by alleging numerous past instances in which Ray had allegedly threatened or wronged him in some fashion. For example, he claimed she had recently slashed the driver’s side tires on a truck his new girlfriend had recently gotten while the vehicle was parked outside his home. Then, after they replaced the tires, he claimed Ray came back a second time, punctured the new tires, and stayed outside the house honking her horn.

He also claimed Ray had shown up to his home unannounced multiple times in the past few weeks “without him wanting her to be there.”

The boyfriend then told deputies he had been receiving disturbing messages from Ray that day and showed them how he was receiving messages from Ray in real-time.

“He then pulled out his phone and showed the messages to which he had not replied, however, there were numerous messages in a short period of time,” the affidavit states. “The messages that he was receiving while we were on scene were over random topics but stayed consistent with (Ray) saying vulgar language to him and telling him she loved him. The defendant did send a message to the victim saying she wanted to have sexual intercourse with him and his girlfriend and if not, she was going to kill them.”

The boyfriend then sent a message back to Ray asking that she stop contacting him. She allegedly replied that she did not care what he wanted and she would continue to send him messages.

When deputies found Ray, she was inside of a tent put up on her mother’s property. She claimed she had not left the residence all evening, but deputies said the hood of her car was still hot from having recently been used. Inside of the car, deputies said they found a knife.

Ray was then placed under arrest and booked into Lake County Jail on $15,000 bond. She is currently scheduled to appear in court on the morning of Jan. 22, 2024.
