A 28-year-old man in Missouri has been arrested for allegedly killing a 35-year-old pregnant woman and the child she was carrying, as five kids — all of whom were under the age of 10 — watched in horror.

Vanier J. Jones was taken into custody last week and charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the slayings of 35-year-old Christina Lynn Rentchler and her unborn child, court records reviewed by Law&Crime show.

Jones is also facing charges of armed criminal action, first-degree assault, endangering the welfare of a child, and unlawful possession of a handgun.

According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by Law&Crime, officers with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department on April 23, 2025, responded to a call regarding a shooting at a residence located in the 4100 block of Farlin Avenue. Upon arriving at the address, first responders said they quickly located the victim, later identified as Rentchler, who appeared to be suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, including a single shot “in the back of the head.”

A subsequent autopsy performed by the county medical examiner concluded that the victim was in the second trimester of her pregnancy at the time of her death. The exam further concluded that Rentchler’s death was the direct cause of the death of her unborn baby.

The affidavit also included a harrowing detail about the fatal shooting and who was forced to witness the alleged crime take place.

“In the house during the murder were five juveniles Victim 4, Victim 5, Victim 6, Victim 7 and Victim 8,” the affidavit states. “The juveniles’ ages ranged from ages of 2 to 10 years old. Some of these juveniles were [Rentchler’s] children.”

Following the shooting, investigators interviewed the eldest child at the hospital, who they said identified Jones as the shooter, adding that he had recently begun staying at the house with her and her family. The child also provided a brief description of what led to Rentchler’s tragic murder and how the child avoided suffering the same fate.

“She stated the Defendant had gotten angry and shot [Rentchler],” according to the document. “She stated that she then played dead, and heard the Defendant ask Victim 1’s children where their mother was prior to the Defendant killing Victim 1.”

After being taken into custody, Jones allegedly told police that he had nothing to do with Rentchler’s murder, claiming he was with an individual identified in the document as “Witness 1.” However, when police spoke to the witness in a taped interview, they stated that “not only was Witness 1 not with the Defendant when the homicide occurred, but that the Defendant admitted to Witness 1 that he had just killed a woman.”

Further investigation revealed that Jones had previously been convicted of multiple prior felonies and had “absconded from his federal supervised release at the time of the homicide.”

An Illinois man was arrested for allegedly attacking a pregnant woman with a lit “blunt” — also known as a marijuana cigar — which he allegedly forced her to swallow in a strange midday assault that also saw him try to clean the victim’s feet for some reason, cops say.

“I need to wash your feet,” Benjamin Schroeder, 25, allegedly told the woman before forcing her to take down the scorching hot cigar, which left burns in her throat, according to the local ABC affiliate WTVO.

It’s unclear what Schroeder’s relationship is to the woman, with police describing the March 10 incident as a domestic battery. The victim told authorities that she had been strangled and burned by Schroeder two days before his blunt attack. The two of them live together in the 100 block of Lawrence Street in Cherry Valley, which is about 75 miles northwest of Chicago up toward the Wisconsin border.

According to police, the woman said she was in bed when Schroeder set upon her at around noon and dragged her by the wrists to an upstairs bathroom.

Once there, he started allegedly choking her and informed the woman about her feet needing to be washed before his attack, WTVO reports. Doctors treated the victim for burns in her throat; her baby was unharmed.

Schroeder, who was arrested in Wisconsin by the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, has been charged with two counts of aggravated battery of a pregnant woman, domestic battery causing bodily harm and aggravated battery causing strangulation. He was granted pretrial release on Tuesday and is awaiting his first court date.

A Tennessee man who called himself a “serial killer” in court and who is serving two life sentences for killing his pregnant girlfriend and her unborn child received an additional 159 years in prison for the murders of three other people.

Joshua Dotson learned his added fate on Friday after pleading guilty to the murders of Divieon Parker, Renita Bennett and Reginald Anderson, according to a press release from the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office.

The additional 159 years will run consecutive with his prior murder conviction in August, bringing his total sentence to 261 years in lockup for the five murders. Dotson was also convicted of the murders of his former girlfriend, Jamesha Covson, and her unborn child, resulting in two consecutive life sentences totaling 102 years.

“After five years, we are pleased to finally have justice for Dotson’s multiple victims,” said Shelby County District Attorney Regina Lucreziano, who worked on the case. “While no amount of time in prison will bring the victims back to their loved ones, we are content that he will never be a threat to our community again.”

Parker was killed on Nov. 17, 2019, in a Memphis market parking lot. Anderson and Bennett were shot on May 24, 2020, near a park in Memphis. Covson was shot on June 12, 2020. Dotson was added to the state’s most wanted list and was arrested days later.

As Law&Crime reported in October, a jury found Dotson guilty on two counts of first-degree murder for the fatal shootings of Covson and her unborn child following a three-day trial. Jurors deliberated for just 45 minutes after Dotson took the stand in his own defense and told the court that he was a “serial killer,” Memphis-based Fox affiliate WHBQ reported.

“I am Michael Myers,” Dotson reportedly exclaimed during testimony in which he also confessed to the three additional murders. The comment was an apparent reference to the fictional character of the same name who terrorized teenagers in the “Halloween” horror movie series.

Shelby County Criminal Court Judge Carolyn L. Addison sentenced Dotson to 51 years for each murder conviction, ordering the sentences to be served consecutively, meaning one after the other.

During the hearing, Addison reportedly referred to Covson’s murder as “one of the saddest situations I’ve seen in my career.”

“You will never show remorse for the loss you’ve brought,” Addison said to Dotson, per WHBQ. “The jury got it right.”

According to a probable cause affidavit from the Memphis Police Department, in the early morning hours of June 12, 2020, Dotson and Covson were at her home on the 1200 block of Quinn Avenue in Memphis when they got into an argument regarding “some post on Facebook and the victim’s pregnancy.” At one point, Covson went into a room and closed the door on Dotson, who responded by firing a bullet through the door.

While the initial bullet did not hit Covson, Dotson forced his way into the room to continue arguing before leaving. Police said he returned a bit later and fired multiple shots into Covson’s closed door, ultimately killing her and the child.

“Several hours later, officers received a call regarding a shooting with one shot to [Covson’s address],” the affidavit states. “The victim, Covson, was found in the house with several gunshot wounds. She was transported to the hospital where she expired from her wounds. The doctors at the hospital advised she was approx. 5 to 6 months pregnant and the baby had also expired from the injuries.”

Multiple witnesses told authorities they saw Dotson with a gun during both shootings and prosecutors called 10 witnesses to the stand during the trial to provide testimony.

According to a news release from the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office, just two hours after fatally shooting Covson, Dotson “posted a memorial for Covson on his Facebook page, telling her to “Fly high,” in what authorities believe was a calculated attempt to distance himself from the crime.”

Jerry Lambe contributed to this report.

A 16-year-old pregnant girl in California was mowed down and killed by a 19-year-old man after she confronted him for having sex with the victim’s underage sister, with a neighbor’s doorbell camera capturing her family’s gut-wrenching reaction to the alleged hit-and-run.

Issac Blackhorse Garcia, of Riverside, is accused of killing the teenage girl on Feb. 2 at around 11:45 p.m. that Sunday night, according to police. Neighbors witnessed the aftermath of the alleged hit-and-run and saw the pregnant victim lying in the street afterward. Her family was caught on video running over to her moments later as Blackhorse Garcia allegedly fled the scene. The girl’s baby was delivered at the hospital and is in critical condition.

The footage, which was obtained by Los Angeles ABC affiliate KABC, shows the victim’s family running over and screaming in horror after they see what happened.

“There was a car that just flew really fast through here,” neighbor Miriam Betamen told KABC. “We saw a girl that was right on the street, just laying flat.”

Upon arrival, officers found the pregnant female and rushed her to a local hospital with “severe injuries,” where she later died. “The medical staff delivered her baby, who remains in critical condition,” the Riverside Police Department reported in a press release Thursday. “Officers located the suspect vehicle in Moreno Valley and took the driver into custody.”

While probing the pregnant teen’s death, investigators determined that Blackhorse Garcia had been in a “sexual relationship” with the victim’s teenage sister. “When he dropped the sister off at home, family members approached his vehicle,” Riverside PD reported. “Blackhorse Garcia then sped away, striking the victim with his car.”

According to KABC, the girl’s baby was still in “critical condition” at a local children’s hospital as of Friday. Residents told the station that her mom walked around the neighborhood regularly.

“We would see her walking through the neighborhood getting some exercise,” recalled resident Christopher Garrett. “We just saw them that previous day before the tragedy,” he said of the girl and one of her relatives. “Her and her sister, and they were like laughing.”

Blackhorse Garcia was arrested and booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center on charges of murder, hit-and-run resulting in death and unlawful sex with a minor. He was being held without bail.

President Donald Trump signing executive orders (WRC/YouTube).

Pregnant women across the country have been joining forces to file lawsuits against the federal government over the constitutionality of President Donald Trump‘s executive order ending birthright citizenship in the United States, according to court records.

Attorneys in Maryland, Massachusetts and Washington state have filed lawsuits on behalf of expecting parents in response to Trump’s order last week, which has been blasted as “blatantly unconstitutional” by federal judges as it runs into legal trouble.

Attorneys general of 18 states and two major cities, San Francisco and Washington, D.C., have also teamed up to challenge the order — filing a joint lawsuit last Tuesday, Jan. 21, in federal district court.

“Plaintiffs bring this action to protect their states, localities, and residents from the President’s flagrantly unlawful attempt to strip hundreds of thousands American-born children of their citizenship based on their parentage,” the complaint says. “The principle of birthright citizenship has been enshrined in the Constitution for more than 150 years. The Citizenship Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment unambiguously and expressly confers citizenship on ‘[a]ll persons born’ in and ‘subject to the jurisdiction’ of the United States. More than 125 years ago, the Supreme Court confirmed that this entitles a child born in the United States to noncitizen parents to automatic citizenship.”

The suit, which was filed in Massachusetts against Trump and the U.S. government, notes how Congress “subsequently codified that understanding in the Immigration and Nationality Act” and describes how the executive branch has “long recognized” that attempts to deny citizenship to children based on their parents’ status would be “unquestionably unconstitutional,” per the complaint.

“President Trump now seeks to abrogate this well-established and longstanding Constitutional principle by executive fiat,” the suit says.

Five pregnant women who are part of a lawsuit filed in federal district court in Maryland, along with two immigrant advocacy groups, have condemned Trump’s order as a “flagrant violation of the Fourteenth Amendment” and the history underlying the text of those enactments, “all of which guarantee the fundamental right to citizenship for all children born in the United States,” their suit says.

“The President has no unilateral authority to override rights recognized in the Constitution or in federal statutes,” the complaint states. “The principle of birthright citizenship is a foundation of our national democracy, is woven throughout the laws of our nation, and has shaped a shared sense of national belonging for generation after generation of citizens.”

Three pregnant women in Washington state — Alicia Chavarria Lopez, Cherly Norales Castillo and Delmy Franco Aleman — joined forces with the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project to file a class action suit in federal court on Friday, Jan. 24, saying children will be left “stateless” under Trump’s executive order and unable to be recognized as citizens.

“Citizenship is the fundamental marker of belonging in this country,” the suit alleges. “Indeed, without citizenship, the babies soon to be born in this country whom President Trump unilaterally and unconstitutionally seeks to strip of citizenship will be left without any legal immigration status.”

In addition to Trump and the federal government, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the Department of State, Attorney General James McHenry, the Department of Homeland Security, the Social Security Administration, the Department of Agriculture and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have all been named in lawsuits related to birthright citizenship over the past week.

Trump’s order ultimately argues that the 14th Amendment “has always” excluded people whose parents are in the United States illegally on account of them not being “subject to the jurisdiction” of the U.S., the order says. Requests for comment by Law&Crime were not immediately returned Sunday.

A Florida woman is behind bars for stealing from a Dollar General and attacking a pregnant woman, Sunshine State authorities say.

Maria Gritsaev, 34, stands accused of one count each of aggravated battery on a pregnant victim and petit theft by shoplifting, according to Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Jail records.

The incident occurred in early January, according to investigators. The defendant was arrested on Thursday.

On Jan. 2, deputies asked the public for help identifying the suspect. Law enforcement said the incident occurred at a store on Market Avenue at around 10:30 a.m. that day in Palm Coast – a medium-sized city roughly 30 miles north of Daytona Beach.

The suspect is said to have been a white woman who appeared to be in her late 40s. She was wearing a light-colored hat and scarf at the time. Police also noted she had long blonde hair – which authorities surmised might have been a wig. The wanted woman allegedly left the scene of the crime riding a silver mountain bike.

Law enforcement shared a blurry photograph of the alleged culprit seen from above when making their plea for citizen engagement. And, in the end, it was such engagement that moved the case forward.

“Here’s proof that just because the photo is bad doesn’t mean we can’t overcome it,” the sheriff’s office said in an Instagram post after an arrest was made. The post goes on to credit the defendant’s arrest to “an eagle-eyed social media user.”

More Law&Crime coverage: ‘My knee hurts’: Florida woman arrested after allegedly calling 911 over 30 times in a single year

Speaking with law enforcement, the Dollar General employee said she is eight months pregnant and that Gritsaev “stole a lighter and pushed her,” according to a charging affidavit obtained by Law&Crime. The defendant allegedly frequents the store, the employee added.

“[The store employee] stated that the female (suspect) did not have enough money to purchase the lighter, which costs approximately $2.00,” the court document reads. “[The employee] advised that when the suspect attempted to walk out of the store with the lighter without paying for it, she stood in front of her. [The employee] advised that the suspect then grabbed her and then pushed her out of the way.”

The defendant for her part, admitted to being in the store that day but denied what happened with the lighter.

More Law&Crime coverage: ‘She actually took the check by force’: Florida woman allegedly injures 83-year-old employer, steals her money and holiday cards after being denied $500 Christmas bonus

“Maria advised she was at the Dollar General and paid for the lighter,” the affidavit goes on. “Maria advised that a female employee [redacted] stood in front of her at the entrance. Maria further advised that she did not push anyone. Maria further advised that she was able to leave the store after getting around the female employee [redacted] and left the area because she did not want to be involved in any confrontation.”

Law & Crime contacted the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office for additional details on this story, but no response was immediately forthcoming at the time of publication.

The defendant is being detained in the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility on a combined $6,000 bond.

Lee Mongerson Gilley, 38, remains behind bars without bond in Harris County in a capital murder of multiple persons case following his jail booking on Friday, Oct. 11, four days after the suspected strangulation slaying of 38-year-old Christa Bauer Gilley at her Allston St. home in Houston.

Court documents obtained by Law&Crime show that prosecutors claim to have “good reason to believe” Lee Gilley on Oct. 7 “intentionally and knowingly cause[d]” Christa’s death by “applying pressure to [her] neck and upper back, and intentionally and knowingly caus[ing] the death of unborn child” as a result.

Suspect Gilley is a self-employed software consultant for the last 13 years and Houston homeowner for the last seven years, according to court documents.

Court documents noting that the capital murder defendant was denied bond said Gilley told emergency responders he and his wife had an argument before he went to bed and that when he woke up three hours later she was unresponsive and apparently overdosed to take her own life.

“D[efendant] admitted wife not suicidal and not a drug user,” documents said. “[O]nly two small children he and wife home, had been arguing.”

Christa “went to bed and 3 hours later [Lee] found her in that condition called 911 started CPR,” according to the defendant’s alleged version of events.

An armed Walgreens employee shot a pregnant woman he suspected of stealing lipstick seven times in a parking lot confrontation last year that prompted an emergency cesarean section to deliver the baby and lifelong health problems, a new lawsuit says.

Travonsha L. Ferguson, 25, was shot on April 12, 2023, at the Walgreens store at 2500 Gallatin Road in Nashville.

It happened when the employee, who didn’t identify himself, aggressively confronted, cursed and screamed at Ferguson and her friend about the alleged stolen merchandise, and Ferguson sprayed the employee with mace “in fear of imminent bodily harm to Baby Ferguson and herself,” court documents obtained by HuffPost said.

The shooting prompted an emergency cesarean section to deliver the baby prematurely. The boy survived, but the now 11-month-old has a heart defect, and his mother requires the use of a colostomy bag, court documents said.

The employee who shot her was terminated. He was not charged with a crime after he claimed self-defense, saying he didn’t know if Ferguson and her friend were armed and he feared for his safety and didn’t know if they were armed, police said in a news release.

“I would believe the situation of self-defense if one shot, but it’s impossible to shoot seven times with such accuracy if you’ve been maced — which he was not,” said L. Chris Stewart, Ferguson’s attorney, in a news conference, local CBS affiliate WTVF reported. “We believe it was sprayed at him or in the air when they were surprised — as any pregnant mother would do who gets surprised by somebody running up on them screaming slurs.”

Police said the bloodshed happened when another employee notified the store team leader that two females were stealing items. The team leader told police he started recording the women on his cellphone when he saw them placing items into a cart and a large over-the-shoulder bag, then followed them outside when they left without paying for the merchandise, police said.

He told police he made his way to the rear of the car as the women loaded items into the trunk. He pulled his semi-automatic pistol and fired after one of the women sprayed him with mace, authorities said he told investigators.

After the shooting, the women drove off, and he called 911.

The woman who was with Ferguson dropped her off at a hospital and drove away, officials said.

Ferguson was charged with assault and theft of $1,000 or less, court records show. Her attorney would not comment on the charges, according to local ABC affiliate WKRN-TV.

But he said shoplifting accusation or not, following her to the parking lot and shooting was “negligent and against policy, provided the employee had been trained properly, and Walgreens must be held accountable,” local NBC affiliate WSMV reported.

“Ms Ferguson did nothing at all to deserve to be shot this many times. A witness even said it sounded like the full clip was emptied,” Stewart said, WTVF reported.

Shantanica Ferguson said her daughter did not deserve this.

“It’s been a long ride, and it’s not fair,” she said. “She deserves justice.”

Walgreens did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Law&Crime, but in a statement after the shooting, the company said, “The safety of our patients, customers and team members is our top priority, and violence of any kind will not be tolerated at our stores. We take this matter seriously and are cooperating with local authorities.”

An Alabama man was sentenced to life in prison for stabbing a pregnant woman in the throat a dozen times, killing her and her unborn child in Georgia.

Curteze Avery, 30, was sentenced to two concurrent life sentences in the deaths of Breanna Burgess and her 20-week-old unborn child. Prosecutors indicted him in October for malice murder and feticide. Avery will become eligible to seek parole in 2052, but the parole board will be authorized to reject his request, officials said.

Burgess was found dead near Fort Drive and Whitesville Road in LaGrange in the early morning hours of July 27, 2022. She had been stabbed in the throat at least 14 times, authorities said.

Police said they quickly identified suspects through cellphone records connecting Burgess to a friend with her shortly before the crime. The friend told police the last she saw Burgess was when he was with Avery, driving away in a neon green Chevrolet Camaro.

Investigators tracked the Camaro using LaGrange traffic cameras to and from the murder scene shortly before and after the time of the murders, officials said.

The Camaro was found at a residence in LaGrange a few hours after the murders with blood on the outside of the car. A search of the car and the residence Avery was found hiding in turned up Burgess’ blood.

“Curteze Avery cut short the life of Breanna Burgess and her unborn child,” said John Herbert Cranford, Jr., District Attorney, Coweta Judicial Circuit, in a statement. “For this, it is just that he is now sentenced to serve life in prison. While the family of Ms. Burgess will never fully heal from this senseless crime, the District Attorney’s Office is relieved to have obtained a Life sentence without the family experiencing the difficulty and uncertainty of a jury trial.”

Breanna’s mother, Pamela Smith, was crushed, local ABC affiliate WTVM reported.

“She died in the car, and then they dropped her off on Fort Drive,” Smith said then. “Why did they take my baby?”

A GoFundMe page set up by her aunt said the 26-year-old single mother of three didn’t deserve it.

“This was the last thing we expected to happen,” the aunt said. “We are left to take care of her funeral and the kids left behind.”

Maurice Kelso Smith (Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office) and Darionne Burley (Gregory W. Spencer Funeral Directors)

A 32-year-old man in Texas will spend the remainder of his days behind bars for killing his 26-year-old pregnant girlfriend, shooting her in the back of the head only a few weeks after the couple held a gender reveal party for their soon-to-be twin boys, both of whom also died as a result of the shooting, records reviewed by Law&Crime show.

District Court Judge Robert P. Brotherton on Monday ordered Maurice Kelso Smith to serve a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 2020 slayings of Darionne Burley and the unborn kids.

The sentence was formally handed down after a jury in Tarrant County found Smith guilty of capital murder in the fatal shooting. In capital murder cases where the state chooses not to pursue the death penalty, defendants convicted serve a mandatory life sentence without parole.

According to a report from Fort Worth, Texas, CBS affiliate KTVT, officers with the Mansfield Police Department on June 29, 2020, responded to a call regarding a woman who had been carjacked at gunpoint in the 1600 block of the North U.S. Highway 287 frontage road. The victim told the emergency dispatcher that the carjacker — later identified as Smith — had arrived in a different car, abandoned it, and then taken her car.

First responders made contact with the carjacking victim and then located the Honda Civic Smith had been driving before stealing the other woman’s car. Inside the Civic, police said they found Burley, who appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound to the back of her head, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Detectives identified Smith as Burley’s boyfriend and dispatched units to his address. When they arrived at his home, police reportedly said they found Smith destroying physical evidence and attempting to clean the car he had just stolen. They also reportedly found Smith’s clothes covered in blood as well as a gun, which ballistics testing matched as the weapon that killed Burley.

Investigators said that Smith, a convicted felon, had a friend illegally purchase the gun for him the day before the shooting. The Star-Telegram reported that Burley chipped in about $250 for the weapon that would later kill her.

Smith shot and killed Burley following a “joyful gender reveal party,” according to a family member who testified at trial, KTVT reported.

Following his arrest, police took Smith to a hospital for a suspected overdose, but he was ultimately determined to be faking his intoxication as well as his claims of memory loss, The Dallas Morning News reported. The paper also reported that Smith was appealing his guilty verdict.
