Photos released by police of the alleged NYC subway fire suspect (NYPD Crime Stoppers).

A woman sleeping aboard a subway car in New York City was set on fire early Sunday morning by a random stranger who walked up to her and set her clothes ablaze with a lighter — engulfing her entire body in flames and killing her — before calmly walking off and watching her brutal demise from the platform, completely “unbeknownst” to cops who responded, police officials say.

The New York Police Department announced at a press conference on Sunday evening that a suspect with no known ties or connections to the victim, who has not been publicly identified, was taken into custody after a group of “high school-age New Yorkers” spotted him aboard the subway again later in the day and notified authorities. A manhunt had been underway for him and photos were released of the man on the F train where the woman was set on fire at around 7:30 a.m. Sunday, according to NYPD officials. He was caught on “another moving train” at Herald Square in midtown Manhattan, officials said.

“Our person of interest and victim were both riding an F train to the end of the line at Stillwell Avenue in Brooklyn,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch told reporters. “As the train pulled into the station, the suspect calmly walked up to the victim, who was in a seated position at the end of a subway car. The suspect used what we believe to be a lighter to ignite the victim’s clothing, which became fully engulfed in a matter of seconds.”

Horrifying cell phone footage captured by commuters and obtained by the New York Post shows the scene unfold. Officers who were already at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue subway station responded after smelling smoke and extinguished the fire, but were unable to save the woman in time and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Tisch and other police and MTA officials described the incident as “heinous” and “senseless.”

“What [responding officers] saw was a person standing inside the train car, fully engulfed in flames,” Tisch said. “Unbeknownst to the officers who responded, the suspect had stayed on the scene and was seated on a bench on the platform just outside the train car.”

Police were able to use the body cameras on the responding officers to get photos and clear images of the suspect, which they shared online through NYPD Crime Stoppers and local media outlets. The MTA and NYPD worked together to bring the suspect in, according to MTA Security Chief Michael Kemper.

“We all want to offer our sincere and deepest condolences to the family of the victim of this brutal, senseless homicide that occurred early this morning in Brooklyn,” Kemper told reporters on Sunday evening at the press conference. “A person of interest is in custody. Now we’re calling on the rest of the justice system to step up and do their jobs. There must be strong, swift consequences on this person — and I use that term lightly — who committed this brutal, brutal homicide. There is no room in civilized society for people like him to be walking around.”

While the identity of the suspect has not been released, police said on Sunday afternoon that they were searching for a person described as 25 to 30 years old.

“We don’t believe they knew each other,” said NYPD Chief of Transit Joseph Gulotta.

“She’s standing there. She’s motionless,” he said of the victim. “There’s no interaction between the two.”

Police said they would be releasing more information in the coming days on both the victim and the perpetrator as they continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding what happened and how they crossed paths.

An MTA bus driver on his Friday afternoon route in New York City attacked and stabbed a passenger with a knife — plunging it into their head and leg — after getting into a “verbal dispute” and punched by the rider over making a stop, cops say.

Ian Bascombe, 58, was allegedly driving a southbound B41 bus near Foster and Flatbush Aves. in Brooklyn, New York, when passenger Quentin Branch, 33, asked him to pull over to drop him off, according to the New York Police Department.

“The passenger wanted to exit at an unauthorized stop,” NYPD officials tell Law&Crime.

Police sources told the New York Post that Branch, a “known transit offender recidivist,” claimed he boarded the wrong bus and wanted to get off. Bascombe allegedly kept driving to try and find a safe place to pull over, prompting Branch to attack him.

“I’m going to break your jaw” Branch allegedly said to Bascombe before socking him in the left eye, the Post reports.

The assault happened at around 12:30 p.m. and led to Bascombe brandishing a knife to stab Branch with multiple times, according to police. He was transported to Kings County Hospital in stable condition and survived.

Both men wound up being arrested and charged for the incident, with Bascombe catching two counts of second- and third-degree assault and one count of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon; Branch got hit with one count of second-degree harassment and two counts of second- and third-degree assault.

“Violence on buses puts New Yorkers at risk and is not acceptable,” said Frank Annicaro, NYC Transit’s senior vice president for buses, in a statement to local media outlets. “Pending internal review, this Bus Operator is being withheld from service.”

Bascombe is described by the New York Daily News as a 20-year vet with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. His attack on Branch is one of several incidents to happen this year involving MTA employees in New York and other major cities.

Last week, an MTA cleaner was arrested and charged for allegedly cutting a man at the Atlantic Ave.-Barclays Center subway stop in Brooklyn. In November, a female MTA employee was allegedly shot in Los Angeles by her ex-boyfriend.

The violence has sparked protests from MTA workers, who have asked for better security.

“Metro doesn’t care about its drivers,” a longtime employee told the Los Angeles Times in May. “We are all expendable.”

Rachel Mitchell (Maricopa County DA’s Office), Alvin Bragg (Manhattan DA’s Office), and Raad Almansori (Maricopa County DA’s Office)

One of Arizona’s top prosecutors has broken with typical legal protocol this week by refusing to extradite a 26-year-old man who is accused of beating a 38-year-old mother to death inside a New York City hotel room earlier this month.

Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell, a staunch Republican who rose to office after winning a 2022 special election, on Wednesday publicly refused to send Raad Almansori back to New York to face murder charges in the brutal slaying of 38-year-old Denisse Oleas-Arancibia.

Mitchell was previously brought on by Republicans in the U.S. Senate to assist in the confirmation of Donald Trump-nominated Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and was a leader in the questioning of Christine Blasey Ford, who had credibly accused the soon-to-be justice of sexual assault decades before his confirmation.

Mitchell is claiming that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg — a prominent Democrat — and the prosecutors in his office were too lenient on accused murderers to be trusted with detaining Almansori.

“Having observed the treatment of violent criminals in the New York area by the Manhattan D.A. there, Alvin Bragg,” Mitchell said during a Wednesday afternoon news conference. “I think it’s safer to keep him here and keep him in custody so that he cannot be out doing this to individuals either in our state, county or anywhere in the United States.”

Bragg has been a target for Republicans who consistently claim that he has gone after Trump over alleged unlawful hush payments to adult actress Stormy Daniels for political gain.

Almansori is accused of stabbing and bludgeoning Oleas-Arancibia to death in New York’s Soho Hotel on Feb. 8 before hopping on a flight to Arizona. Once there, he allegedly stabbed two different women — a McDonald’s employee in the bathroom and a female driver stabbed during a carjacking.

The Manhattan DA’s Office did not take the Arizona prosecutor’s controversial statements lightly, responding quickly via spokesperson Emily Tuttle, who deftly compared New York City’s murder rate to the murder rates in Phoenix, Arizona, which falls within Mitchell’s jurisdiction.

“It is deeply disturbing that DA Mitchell is playing political games in a murder investigation,” the statement said. “In Manhattan, we are serious about New Yorkers’ safety, which is why murders are down 24%, and shootings are down 38% since D.A. Bragg took Office. New York’s murder rate is less than half that of Phoenix, Arizona, because of the hard work of the NYPD and all of our law enforcement partners. It is a slap in the face to them and to the victim in our case to refuse to allow us to seek justice and full accountability for a New Yorker’s death.”

The Manhattan DA’s Office followed up with a post to X with statistics from AmericanViolence.org, which state that Phoenix has a murder rate of 11.6 per 100,000 residents while Manhattan’s is 5 per 100,000 residents.

Bragg’s office has been the target of criticism from Republican officials who claim that violent criminals in the city are often released from detention without being required to post bond and then not prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
