Chester Lamar Grant, 40, is facing a murder charge in the April 26 death of 23-year-old U.K. native Tamilore Odunsi in Houston. Cops responded shortly before 4 p.m. to an apartment on the city’s southside for a welfare check. Officers knocked on the door but received no answer. Then they walked around to the back of the apartment where they found blood on the concrete patio. Cops entered the apartment and found Odunsi in the kitchen suffering from numerous stab wounds. Officers also discovered Grant in the bedroom with at least one stab wound. The victim was pronounced dead while Grant was taken to the hospital with critical injuries.

Houston police told local CBS affiliate KHOU the two had been roommates for just a couple months and were in a spat over their cats. The argument escalated and Grant allegedly stabbed Odunsi before trying to take his own life. Police took Grant to the Harris County Jail on Saturday. He is being held on a $500,000 bond.

Odunsi’s family started a GoFundMe account for the woman known on TikTok as Tami Dollars or TD.

“Tami was a beautiful soul, full of light, ambition, and kindness,” the fundraiser reads. “She was just 23 years old. A devoted Christian, she was a God-fearing young woman who found strength and joy in her faith. She had a deep love for her church community, where she was actively involved and always eager to serve others with humility and grace.”

She dreamed of becoming a nurse and wanted to work with children in her new career.

Odunsi was set to graduate from nursing school just a few days before her murder, her family said. Her death is “an unimaginable loss at a moment that should have marked the beginning of a bright and promising future.”

Grant is slated to appear in court on Monday.

A patient at a Kentucky hospital became so enraged at the discharge process taking too long that she allegedly choked a nurse.

Mykeisha Johnson, 35, was a patient on the third floor at the University of Louisville Hospital and was set to be discharged on Saturday when she was allegedly getting annoyed with how long the process was taking. When a nurse who happened to be making her rounds at the time walked past her room, Johnson pounced.

More from Law&Crime: ‘How does that happen’: Parents say newborn ‘nearly bled to death’ after hospital circumcision

According to a police report obtained by local Fox affiliate WDRB, surveillance video showed Johnson choke the nurse, slam her to the floor and repeatedly punch her in the face. Staff eventually pulled Johnson off the nurse.

Johnson reportedly said the nurse had nothing to do with her prolonged wait, but she was “the first person available.” The nurse went to the emergency room with pain in her neck, back of her head, leg, abdomen and shoulder. Though she never lost consciousness during the attack, she said she was “in shock and didn’t remember everything,” the affidavit reportedly said.

The hospital released the following statement to local media outlets:

“UofL Health does not tolerate any violence or abuse against its staff, patients, or visitors. LMPD has made an arrest and is handling the investigation. Our employee was treated and released.”

Instead of waiting to be discharged from the hospital, Johnson now has to post bond to be released from jail. She’s facing charges of assaulting a health care provider, wanton endangerment and menacing, per court records. As of Tuesday afternoon, she remained in the Jefferson County Jail.

A judge added the wanton charge during a hearing on Monday, WDRB reported.

A nurse at a county jail in Minnesota is facing a manslaughter charge nearly six years after an inmate under her care died in a case that’s already resulted in a $2.6 million lawsuit and a new law in the victim’s name to ensure something like that never happens again.

Michelle Rose Skroch, now 37, is facing charges of second-degree manslaughter culpable negligence and two counts of felony criminal neglect, one for “knowingly depriving” inmate Hardel Sherrell of medical care and the second for doing so for an “extended period of time.” A criminal complaint says the 27-year-old Sherrell was booked into the Beltrami County Jail on Aug. 24, 2018. While his blood pressure was high, he was otherwise in good condition in his initial health screening. He had a history of high blood pressure and a recent incident of respiratory failure, the complaint said.

More from Law&Crime: ‘The victim’s face is broken’: Patient viciously attacks nurse for no apparent reason, likely blinding her for life, cops say

Three days after arriving at the jail, Sherrell began complaining of chest pain and said his fingers on his left hand were tingly. Doctors performed an EKG and gave him ibuprofen, Tylenol and an anti-anxiety medication. Sherrell also stated he had stopped taking his blood pressure medication in January 2018.

Sherrell’s condition continued to worsen over the ensuing days and kept falling out of his bunk bed and was unable to stand up. He said he was unable to feel his legs. A nurse went to check on him on Aug. 31, 2018, and found him lying on a mat in his cell and not able to move. His mouth also was drooping and his speech was slurred.

A jail doctor opined that Sherrell may be suffering from Guillain-Barré Syndrome, a rare autoimmune disorder affecting the peripheral nervous system. Sherrell went to the hospital where an emergency room physician diagnosed him with “malingering and weakness” as he was able to move his legs. They sent him back to jail after an MRI found no abnormalities, the complaint said. The ER doc instructed him to return to the hospital if he had a fever, signs of stoke and/or worsening weakness.

Skroch, who worked for MEnD Correctional Care, LLC which was contracted to provide medical services at the jail, came to work on Sept. 1, 2018, and was advised about Sherrell’s condition. When she went to see him, she allegedly just stood at his cell door and “never conducted a standard, basic nursing assessment.” She told Sherrell to “get up and walk” and that “there was nothing wrong with him and he could get up and walk if he wanted to,” according to the complaint. Sherrell “pleaded” for medical attention but Skroch allegedly said she “would not bargain with him.”

The defendant never collected vital signs or other physical examinations despite him being unable to eat, drink or go to the bathroom on his own, cops allege. He fell out of his cot six times in two hours, per the complaint.

Skroch returned to work on Sept. 2, 2018, and found correctional officers trying to bathe him. Instead of helping, the nurse started “basically screaming at [Sherrell] telling him he’s faking” his illness, the complaint said. She did not take vital signs nor perform any medical or neurological assessments.

She reportedly told the jail doctor that Sherrell’s condition was slightly improved and he was doing better than the day before. Per the complaint, Skroch later that day noted that the inmate was sleeping “comfortably” and had “no distress in his breathing.” However surveillance video reportedly showed Sherrell taking rapid, shallow breaths, prosecutors wrote. She allegedly told jail guards that Sherrell was “perfectly fine.”

Correctional officers found Sherrell unresponsive around 4:46 p.m. and doctors pronounced him dead shortly thereafter. An autopsy determined he died of pneumonia and cerebral edema, which is swelling of brain tissue. A outside pathologist labeled the cause of death as complications from Guillain-Barré Syndrome.

More from Law&Crime: ‘It takes everything in me not to start s—‘: NICU nurse accused of breaking bones of premature infants denied release after text messages revealed

A correctional health expert who reviewed the case said Skroch failed at “the most basic nursing care” such as taking Sherrell’s vitals or other basic medical assessments. She had enough education and experience to know something was seriously wrong with the inmate, the expert reportedly determined.

“He concluded that ‘[t]he failure to obtain any vital signs on a critically ill patient over two days is such a tremendous breach in the standard of care that it is tantamount to an abandonment of the most basic professional responsibilities of a nurse,’” prosecutors wrote.

Had she treated the patient, he likely would have survived, according to medical experts.

Sherrell’s mother sued and won a $2.6 million settlement against the county and MEnD, according to the Minnesota Star Tribune. State lawmakers passed the “Hardel Sherrell Act” that gives the Department of Corrections more oversight over county jails, local NBC outlet KARE reported. Skroch’s nursing license has since been revoked, according to the TV station.

Cops arrested Skroch on Friday. She has a court date scheduled for April 11.

A Florida nurse likely will be blind for the rest of her life after a patient allegedly attacked her unprovoked.

Deputies from the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office wrote an arrest affidavit that the patient, later identified as 33-year-old Stephen Eric Scantlebury, had been admitted to HCA Florida Palms West Hospital under the Baker Act, which allows people to be involuntarily detained and examined for mental health issues, and was receiving treatment. Shortly before 1:30 p.m. Tuesday the nurse walked into Scantlebury’s third-floor room. Witnesses said the suspect inexplicably “jumped on top of his bed, and then jumped onto and attacked the victim,” according to the affidavit.

More from Law&Crime: Man killed his dad, hid body under blue tarp in yard telling worried son it ‘was trash’ before fleeing to Walmart

Scantlebury allegedly stood over the victim and repeatedly punched her in the face. A witness yelled for him to stop and he ran out of the room. He fled down the hallway and into the stairwell where he went down to the first floor and escaped from the hospital. The suspect, shirtless and still wearing patches from an EKG monitor, reportedly sprinted across the parking lot and into traffic on Southern Boulevard. Video obtained by local TV stations showed deputies pointing what appeared to be either Tasers or stun guns at Scantlebury and ordering him onto the ground in the middle of the road. He surrendered and deputies took him into custody.

The nurse was transported via helicopter to another hospital where she was last listed in critical condition. Doctors said “essentially every bone in the victim’s face is broken and the victim is likely to lose the use of both eyes.”

According to cops, Scantlebury had been “acting paranoid” for the last few days and “blaming people in his life for events they had nothing to do with.” That led to authorities to take him into custody under the Baker Act.

In a statement, HCA Florida Healthcare said the attack “happened within a matter of seconds.”

“Our primary concern is with our beloved colleague and we are praying for her recovery. We are also providing support to our hospital staff who are understandably shaken by this incident,” the hospital said.

Willa Fuller, executive director of the Florida Nurses Association, also released a statement expressing concern about the safety of nurses as attacks happen across the country.

“With concern about a longstanding nursing shortage, there needs to be substantive action by ALL stakeholders to prevent this kind of egregious action. We would like to see direct care nurses included in any initiatives related to violence against healthcare workers,” she said.

Scantlebury stands accused of attempted murder and is receiving treatment at a hospital. His next court date is scheduled for Tuesday.

Left to right: Heather Alice Lang Vass and Carlos Chacon in court (KGTV) Inset: Megan Espinoza (Glen Abbey Memorial Park & Mortuary).

A California plastic surgeon and his nurse were sentenced for their roles in a botched plastic surgery that killed a patient and mother of two.

Dr. Carlos Chacon was sentenced on Friday to three years in prison as part of a plea deal to manslaughter in the killing of Megan Espinoza, 36, who died from a fatal dose of drugs, including ketamine and fentanyl. He is also banned from practicing medicine for life in California.

Chacon’s nurse, Heather Alice Lang Vass, was sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter. She surrendered her nursing license but can eventually apply to have it reinstated.

Espinoza’s mother, Judith Gorcey, took Vass to task for not calling 911, San Diego’s ABC affiliate KGTV reported.

“That man and his nurse who are responsible for callously ending Megan’s life gave her the death penalty, and they gave all of us who loved her a life sentence of extreme pain,” Gorcey said.

The defendants apologized, San Diego’s CBS affiliate KFMB reported.

“You are a far better man than I ever could be to stand behind those rails. You should know at my core, if I could trade places with Megan, I would,” Chacon said to Espinoza’s father.

Vass added in a statement: “Her death will haunt me for the rest of my days that I didn’t call for help.”

David Gorcey, Espinoza’s father, decried the light punishment.

“The minimum sentencing of three years seems, well, painfully inappropriate,” he said.

As Law&Crime previously reported, Megan Espinoza’s heart stopped at Divino Plastic Surgery six days before Christmas in 2018.

The probable cause warrant said Espinoza went into cardiac arrest mid-surgery at around 2:20 p.m. on Dec. 19, 2018.

Chacon reacted by leaving the room to see four other patients between 3:15 p.m. and 5 p.m., calling two doctors to ask for their advice rather than calling 911, ordering staffers, some of whom had no medical background, not to call 911, and lying to Megan Espinoza’s husband about what was happening, according to the warrant,

“Chacon made the conscious decision to stop others from providing emergency lifesaving efforts on at least 7 occasions,” the warrant said.

Prosecutors said that Chacon did not call 911 until 3 hours after Espinoza’s heart stopped. By then, it was much too late to save her.

Espinoza died on Jan. 28, 2019, at 10:26 p.m., the warrant said. An autopsy determined she died from “ischemic encephalopathy […] caused by a lack of blood flow and oxygen to the brain.”

In December 2022, KGTV reported that the victim’s family had settled a lawsuit against Chacon.

An obituary noted that Megan Espinoza was a kindergarten teacher, devoted wife, and mother.

“Megan’s teaching career was something for which she had the utmost passion,” the memorial reads. “She taught kindergarten and T-K for the Cajon Valley Union School District, and taught in San Ysidro and San Diego earlier in her career. Megan loved spending time at the beach, cooking, gardening, going on walks, taking yoga classes and taking pictures, especially of her boys. She loved being with family and arranging get-togethers with her many friends, but being with Moises and her boys were her greatest joys.”

A Pennsylvania nurse, already facing charges that she administered excessive doses of insulin to dozens of patients, including 17 who died, is accused of giving a 43-year-old “brittle diabetic” patient a lethal dose after she routinely insulted, berated, bullied, and abused him, according to a wrongful-death lawsuit filed by the man’s family this week.

Heather Pressdee is accused of injecting Nicholas Cymbol with an excessive and lethal dose of insulin last May at Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Butler, Pennsylvania, according to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit documents the events leading up to Cymbol’s death after the suspicious death of another patient on April 17 when, the lawsuit said, “Pressdee set her sights on Nick Cymbol,” a “brittle diabetic” who often experienced large swings in his blood glucose levels and required routine insulin administration to maintain his blood sugar.

“Though Mr. Cymbol was well-liked by the staff at Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Pressdee routinely insulted, berated, bullied, and abused Mr. Cymbol, just as she had done to other residents,” court documents said. “Staff at Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center were aware that Pressdee disliked Mr. Cymbol and that she held the belief that people with a quality of life like Mr. Cymbol did not deserve to live.”

Once Pressdee yelled at Cymbol, in earshot of other Sunnyview staff members, to “get away from [Pressdee’s] f—— desk” when he approached the nurse’s station, court documents said.

She also routinely called him derogatory names such as “retarded” about his anoxic brain injury in earshot of Sunnyview staff members, court documents alleged.

She’s also accused of preventing other nurses at Sunnyview from feeding or providing water to Cymbol several times. The lawsuit said that days before Cymbol died, Pressdee allegedly said he “was going to be the next one to die and that even though staff complained to administrators about it, nothing was done. After nursing staff confronted Sunnyview administration with their concerns about the Pressdee’s “erratic and troubling behavior,” Sunnyview allowed her to continue as unit manager.

“It is absolutely beyond the pale that no one did anything after Pressdee made this promise regarding Mr. Cymbol,” court documents said.

Rob Peirce, the managing partner of Robert Peirce & Associates, said in a statement he’s hoping to get answers as to how she was permitted to continue working in these facilities despite her “erratic, disturbing, and abusive behavior.”

“The more our office has investigated, the more questions we have as to why these facilities allowed these tragedies to occur,” he said.

Sunnyview did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Law&Crime.

As Law&Crime has reported, Pressdee is accused of intentionally administering excessive doses of insulin to 22 patients between 2020 and her arrest last May, according to the state attorney general’s office.

In a news release, Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry accused her of poisoning 19 patients. In total, 17 of those 19 patients died while in Pressdee’s care, authorities said. Some of the patients — spanning five different care facilities — required insulin to treat diabetes, while some of them did not have diabetes.

She faces one count each of murder of the first and third degree, three counts of criminal homicide, two counts of criminal attempt — murder in the first degree, and charges of aggravated assault, neglect of a care-dependent person, and recklessly endangering another person, court records show. Pressdee remains in custody at Butler County Prison without bail. She has another court hearing set for May 2, according to the court docket.

Pressdee allegedly admitted to some of the incidents but said “she felt bad for their quality of life and she had hoped that they would just slip into a coma and pass away,” according to the initial criminal complaint filed in the case.

Phil DiLucente, one of her attorneys, did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Law&Crime.

But in an interview with CBS Pittsburgh affiliate WPXI in November, DiLucente said his client has expressed remorse.

“She has remorse, yes. I know that sounds trite, but as crazy as the whole thing is, she does express remorse, and I think her expression of remorse is sincere,” DePasquale said, the station reported.

Suffolk County District Court Judge Eric Sachs on Monday formally dismissed the misdemeanor charge against Amanda Burke, her attorney confirmed to Law&Crime.

The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office had previously said that Burke was working at Good Samaritan Hospital’s neonatal ICU on Feb. 6, 2023, and was assigned to care for a 2-day-old baby named Nikko.

While the windows in the neonatal ICU are typically covered for privacy reasons, the covering on the bottom corner of one of the windows had come off, allowing someone outside of the unit to look in and see baby Nikko. The child’s father was recording a video of his son when the incident took place.

“Burke approached the newborn while he was lying in a bassinet, lifted him up, quickly flipped him over, and violently slammed him face down on the bassinet,” prosecutors wrote. “The infant’s father recorded a video of the incident on his cellular telephone through the nursery window. After viewing the recording, the infant’s mother confronted Burke.”

The child’s parents then showed the video of Burke slamming their child into the bassinet to other nurses and staff members at the hospital. Authorities say that the establishment took swift action, directing Burke to leave the hospital and terminating her employment within two hours of the alleged incident taking place.

Burke’s attorney, Robert C. Gottlieb, told Law&Crime that the dismissal of the charge was welcome, but came “a year too late.”

Gottlieb explained that the essential element of the endangering charge prosecutors would have to show is that Burke’s actions were “likely to cause physical injury” to Nikko. He said that nine months ago, he provided prosecutors with an expert report stating that Burke’s conduct, which was recorded, was not likely to cause Nikko injury.

However, prosecutors waited until four days before the trial was slated to begin before they spoke to their own expert, Gottlieb said. It was only when the DA’s expert also agreed that Burke’s actions were not likely to cause physical injury to Nikko that prosecutors called Gottlieb and advised they would be dropping the charges.

In their explanation to dismiss the charges, prosecutors also referenced Burke’s nurse’s licensing agency, which investigated the allegations and determined that her conduct “did not even rise to the level of gross negligence and did not warrant any action against her nurse’s license,” Gottlieb continued, noting that the DA’s office had already been informed of the agency’s decision well in advance of the decision to drop charges.

Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney issued the following statement to News 12 indicating that the nurse’s licensing agency’s decision played a crucial role in his office’s decision to dismiss the charge against Burke.

“Unfortunately, despite the disturbing video which captured the incident in this case, the New York State Department of Licensing found the defendant did not act with gross negligence,” he said. “As such, we could not prove the charge beyond a reasonable doubt at trial.”

A nurse at a hospital in Riverside, California, was arrested after a patient accused him of sexually assaulting her when she was unconscious.

The victim told detectives with the Riverside Police Department’s Sexual Assault-Child Abuse (SACA) unit that she had been admitted to the Kaiser Permanente Hospital in mid-January and had received treatment for several days.

She said a male nurse sexually assaulted her when she was unconscious. Detectives identified the suspect as 27-year-old Jacob Daniel Hartman. Cops arrested him on Wednesday on on sexual assault charges, including sexual battery of an unconscious person, police said Friday in a press release. They took him to the Robert Presley Detention Center where he has since posted a $55,000 bond. Further details about the case were not released.

“Given the nature of these crimes, SACA Detectives believe there may be other victims who have not come forward yet,” the Riverside Police Department said.

Anyone with information regarding this investigation should contact Det. Daniel Suarez at [email protected] or (951) 353-7120.

The hospital released the following statement.

“At Kaiser Permanente, safe and high-quality care are always our top priorities,” the statement said. “As soon as we learned of this serious accusation, we immediately cooperated with law enforcement and started an internal investigation. At this time, the individual is no longer employed by Kaiser Permanente.”

According to Hartman’s LinkedIn page, he said he’s worked at the Kaiser Permanente in Riverside since 2018 as a health educator. He also said he worked at Kaiser Permanente hospitals in Irvine and Ontario, California from 2015 to 2018.
