BARSTOW, CA. – The Bureau of Land Management today announced approval of a noncompetitive sale of approximately 30 acres of public lands in San Bernardino County to Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway, which will use the land for the Barstow International Gateway project, an approximately 4,500-acre, $1.5-billion integrated rail facility that would transfer goods from international to domestic containers and create roughly 20,000 new jobs while helping to address logistics and supply chain issues. The project is also expected to help reduce freeway congestion around the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

BLM Barstow Field Office identified the public land, valued at $98,000, as suitable for private sale. It is isolated, surrounded by private lands, and difficult for the BLM to provide public access. Private land sales are subject to provisions of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976 and BLM land sale regulations.

The decision record, environmental assessment, and related documents are available at the BLM National NEPA Register and the BLM Barstow Field Office, located at 2601 Barstow Road in Barstow, CA 92311, during business hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., five days a week, excluding federal holidays. The public may contact the office at 760-252-6000 to make visitation arrangements.

REDDING, Calif. — The Bureau of Land Management has rescinded its fire restrictions order for public lands managed by the Arcata and Redding field offices in Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino, Trinity, Shasta, Butte, Tehama and Siskiyou counties. Hourly limits on use of internal combustion engines off roads and trails and on recreational target shooting also have been lifted.

“Although cooler weather and the start of the rainy season have reduced fire dangers it is still important to be careful with any use of fire outdoors” said Dereck Wilson, manager of the BLM Northern California District.

Lifting restricts means that campfires are once again allowed outside of developed recreation sites. Users must have a valid California Campfire Permit, available at www.readyforwildfire.org, or at any BLM, Forest Service or Cal Fire office.

The California year-round statewide fire prevention order remains in place for public lands managed by the BLM. Termination of the Fire Prevention Orders can be reviewed online for Arcata and Redding field offices.

BARSTOW, CA. – The Bureau of Land Management is seeking public comment on a proposed land sale of approximately 30 acres of public lands located in San Bernardino County to Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway. The Notice of Realty Action will publish in the Federal Register on Wednesday, August 28, to begin a public comment period that will close Oct. 15.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway has proposed to use the land for the Barstow International Gateway project, an approximately 4,500-acre integrated rail facility that would transfer goods from international to domestic containers. The proposed project would result in a more than $1.5 billion investment in the community, potentially creating more than 20,000 new jobs and helping to address logistics and supply chain issues. If approved, the Barstow International Gateway project is expected to also help reduce freeway congestion around the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

The public land proposed for sale is suitable for private sale since it is surrounded by private lands and provides no public access. As such, there would be no impacts to public land access or recreation. If approved, the public lands would be sold to Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway at fair market value.

Anyone interested reviewing the environmental assessment, the appraisal, or maps, may visit the BLM National NEPA Register, or visit the BLM Barstow Field Office, 2601 Barstow Road in Barstow, CA 92311, during business hours 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., five days a week, excluding federal holidays. The public may contact the office at 760-252-6000 to make visitation arrangements.

Written comments should be sent to Bureau of Land Management, Barstow Field Office, ATTN: Tim McCain, 2601 Barstow Road in Barstow, CA 92311, or sent by email to tmccain@blm.gov.

For additional information, contact Tim McCain, Realty Specialist, at tmccain@blm.gov.

REDDING, Calif. — The Bureau of Land Management welcomes anyone interested in off-highway vehicle recreation on public lands to share ideas about the use of grant funding, when the Northern California District hosts a virtual public meeting via Zoom, Tuesday, Feb. 20, from 4 to 7 p.m. The meeting will be divided into three, one-hour segments for the Eagle Lake, Redding and Arcata field offices.

Representatives from each field office will present information on their OHV programs and pending requests for grants from the state of California.

“The BLM uses grant funds from the California State Parks Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division to improve off-highway riding and driving opportunities for our communities and visitors,” said BLM Northern California District Manager Dereck Wilson. “We appreciate hearing suggestions from those who enjoy off-highway vehicle sports on public lands.”

Grant applications are being prepared for the 2024 grant cycle. Public comments will be most helpful to the field offices if received prior to the grant submission deadline of March 4.

Those interested in learning more can join the meeting by registering at https://ow.ly/XA1S50QzqFW. After registering, participants will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. Anyone interested can participate in the entire meeting, or just the field office sessions that interest them, during the following times:

Eagle Lake Field Office (Susanville): 4 to 5 p.m.

Redding Field Office: 5 to 6 p.m.

Arcata Field Office: 6 to 7 p.m.

The California State Parks Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division is funding the planning efforts through an off-highway vehicle planning grant. The state program supports off-highway vehicle recreation in California by distributing more than $35 million annually collected from gas tax, entrance fees and off-highway vehicle sticker registrations. The program supports off-highway vehicle recreation in California by providing financial assistance to cities, counties, districts, federal agencies, state agencies, educational institutions, and federally recognized Native American Tribes and non-profit entities.

The BLM manages off-highway vehicle areas to provide outstanding, sustainable opportunities for recreation on trails designed to minimize impacts on natural resources. The agency works closely with stakeholders and communities in this effort.

In northern California, BLM offices provide OHV recreation opportunities at the Fort Sage and Rice Canyon OHV recreation areas in Lassen County, at the Chappie-Shasta OHV Area in Shasta County, and at the Samoa Dunes Recreation Area in Humboldt County. Additionally, OHV use is allowed on designated roads and trails through wildlands managed by the agency.
