Contract killer gets decades for 4 Philadelphia murders

In Pennsylvania, a man has been sentenced for his role in murdering four men for cash in less than the span of a year from late 2018 to mid 2019. Steven M. Williams, 30, must spend more than 40 years in prison, according to authorities in a report from CBS News.

He pleaded guilty back in December to three counts of murder and conspiracy to commit murder. According to the state’s attorney general’s office, he had a role in four men shot to death in Philadelphia:

William Crawford, 35, on Sept. 8, 2018 in the 1900 block of Hartel Avenue
Jermaine Simmons, 39, on Feb. 10, 2019, in the 7500 block of Forest Avenue in West Oak Lane
Richard Isaac, 31, on March 25, 2019, in the 100 block of East Meehan Street in Mount Airy
Leslie Carroll, 39, on May 4, 2019, at 20th Street and Girard Avenue in Fairmount (Prior reports and online obituaries had his age as 46, but the DA’s office had it as 39.)

“This defendant callously took lives, for dollars, as a paid killer,” Attorney General Michelle Henry said in December. “The defendant is without a doubt a danger to society, and we will be asking the court for a sentence that ensures that the community is protected.”

Florida man murders woman outside Church’s Chicken: Cops

A Florida man allegedly beat a woman to death last June outside a Church’s Chicken in Tampa and left her body to rot near the drive-thru lane.

Michael Canty, 54, stands accused of second-degree murder in the death of 48-year-old Dawn Morrison. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release deputies responded to the fried chicken joint at 2219 E. Fletcher Ave. just after 10 a.m. June 18 for a death investigation. There, they discovered Morrison’s partially-decomposed body under some mulch near the restaurant’s drive-thru area.

An autopsy determined she died from a blow to the head. Surveillance videos indicated she died on June 15, according to a motion for pretrial detention. Several videos from neighboring businesses showed she and a man walking together behind Church’s Chicken shortly before midnight on the night in question. The cameras did not show the murder itself but picked up a woman’s voice yell “quit it, quit it” and “help,” the motion said.

Video also showed the man walk away from the area, change his shirt and throw away items in a dumpster, cops wrote. Police sent out a photo of the man in the images and a officer found a man that matched the man’s description a few blocks from the murder scene on June 20. Cops identified the suspect as Canty.

Detectives also noted he was wearing the same pants and boots along with a New England Patriots drawstring bag. Canty tried to claim he hadn’t seen the victim since the day before the murder but he changed his tune once showed surveillance images that showed him and Morrison together that night. He then claimed he left Morrison as she sat on a curb near Church’s Chicken. He said he threw away his shirt because it was “dirty,” cops said.

Officers arrested Canty for an open container of alcohol and obtained a search warrant to examine his pants and boots. The Florida Department of Corrections crime lab tested the blood for DNA and they came back as a match for both him and Morrison, according to the motion.

Jail records show Canty was arrested for failure to report as a sex offender in October and again on Feb. 6. During a post Miranda interview with detectives the defendant again denied going to Church’s Chicken with Morrison but when showed the video of him in the area he said it was possible, he just didn’t remember, court documents said. Canty denied killing the victim and could not explain why he would have her blood on his pants.

Canty also is facing a tampering with evidence charge for disposing of his shirt. He remains at the Hillsborough County Jail without bond.

“Our detectives worked tirelessly to bring justice for Dawn Morrison,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement. “Their dedication and relentless investigative efforts led to this arrest, ensuring that the individual responsible faces the consequences of their actions.”

Couple abuses, tortures and murders adopted son: Cops

A couple in California is accused of abusing, torturing and murdering their adopted son, with the 10-year-old being rushed to a hospital “in medical distress” before dying several hours later, according to cops.

Alejandra Marin, 51, and Juan Sanchez Moreno, 59, have been arrested on felony murder and torture charges, including one count of willfully causing or permitting harm to a child, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office. The couple was booked on Friday, Nov. 22, following an investigation by the department’s Central Homicide Unit and Special Victims Unit.

On Nov. 21, deputies responded to a call of a 10-year-old boy “in medical distress” at a home in the 13000 block of Malibu Court, Moreno Valley, per an RCSO press release. Authorities found the child and rushed him to a local hospital, where he was stabilized.

“Several hours later, the juvenile’s health declined, and he was pronounced deceased at the hospital,” the sheriff’s office said. “Based on the circumstances, the Riverside Sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit was requested to respond and assumed the investigation.”

The circumstances, according to cops, included visible signs of neglect and abuse documented by SVU and the sheriff office’s Central Homicide Unit. It’s unclear how the couple tortured the boy.

“Through the joint investigation … the juvenile’s adopted parents, identified as 51-year-old Alejandra Marin and 59-year-old Juan Sanchez Moreno … were arrested for murder, torture, and child abuse,” the sheriff’s office said.

The couple was being held at the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside on Sunday without bail, according to jail records. Marin is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, while Moreno’s case records have not been made public yet.

Married man murders mistress and mother of 7: Cops

A married 34-year-old Michigan man faces murder charges in the killing of his mistress and mother of seven, whose remains were found in a trash bag — with the toes sticking out — by a fisherman on the bank of the Flint River.

Christopher Astin Motry faces first-degree murder and charges of tampering with evidence, concealing the death of an individual and domestic violence in the killing of Christina Elizabeth Barber, Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said in a news conference.

The murder was uncovered on March 3 when police were dispatched to the Flint Motel, where Barber had rented room 18. The comforter, sheets, and mattress were soaked in blood. There was blood on a wall and floor, Leyton said.

Police tracked down Barber’s co-workers at Burger King. They’d called the police a day earlier requesting a welfare check for her after she had not been to work in a week and wasn’t answering her phone. Police quickly identified the suspect, who worked with her at the fast-food restaurant, officials said.

Barber had been having trouble with him, authorities added. Their relationship was tumultuous. He had allegedly threatened to kill her on multiple occasions.

He was violent on the job, once getting angry with the manager and ripping the handles off the door of her car, Leyton said.

Police discovered Barber’s remains on March 4 when a man looking for a spot to fish found a black garbage bag and called the police.

Police pieced together the chronology after reviewing motel surveillance video, which showed the couple pulling into the motel lot in front of room 18 in a 2001 Ford F-150 pickup on Feb. 28, Leyton said.

They both went into the room, the prosecutor added, but only Motry came out the next night with what appeared to be a body in a bag. He put the bag into the bed of his truck and dumped it along a section of the river frequented by fishermen, he said.

“It was inevitable it was going to be discovered there,” Leyton said.

Motry was married and was having an affair with Barber, who was divorced, but trying to get out of that affair, Leyton said.

One of Barber’s daughters wrote on Facebook: “I miss you dearly and I will for the rest of my life! I’m just glad your not hurting no more. Keep resting pretty girl!”

Motry was being held without bond. A probable cause hearing is set for March 21.
