Jurors in North Carolina have convicted a man for murdering his mother and injuring his father in a beating he claimed was fueled by drugs and sleep deprivation.

Christopher McCullough was found guilty of first-degree murder Friday in the 2023 death of his 75-year-old mother Mary McCullough. Local ABC affiliate WTVD reported that McCullough was not convicted of other charges, included the attempted murder of his father and larceny of a dog.

He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The jury had deliberated for around seven hours after receiving the case on Thursday.

More from Law&Crime: ‘I wish you well in hell’: Daughter rejoices at sentencing of nurse mom who tortured her younger sister to death

The defendant’s father, John McCullough, testified against his son. According to a courtroom report from local CBS affiliate WNCN, the father told jurors ever since his son was seven, he was “uncontrollably violent” and had “superhuman-like strength.” They tried everything to treat his issues from sending to boarding school to stays at mental health hospitals. None of it worked. Eventually, he and his wife and obtained a domestic violence injunction against him and forbade him from entering their home.

But he ignored that order and entered the home on Aug. 8, 2023. He reportedly told jurors he was high on Adderall and other drugs and hadn’t slept in six days. He said he asked his parents for gas money. When they refused, he began beating his father — all in the presence of his 4-year-old son — though he did not admit to hurting his sickly mother, who used an oxygen tank and weighed just 100 pounds.

“Me and my dad got in a fight, I struck him twice to the ground, I noticed that my mother was face down,” he said, according to local NBC affiliate WRAL.

The younger McCullough then took his son and fled. Cops rushed to the home to aid the elder McCulloughs. There was blood everywhere and both victims were unconscious, cops testified.

“I noticed she had bruises and cuts on her arms,” Raleigh police Officer Phillip Merle said, per WNCN. “Because of the way she was laying, I noticed she had a large puddle of blood underneath her neck. My training officer asked who did this to her. And she was able to grunt out, ‘My son’.”

She was rushed to the hospital where she died nearly a week later.

Christopher McCullough’s son, now 6, was not physically injured in the incident but has experienced post-traumatic stress disorder from witnessing the incident.

“[The boy] has disclosed witnessing the defendant hurting nanny and poppy,” his therapist Tara Pawlyk reportedly testified. “That poppy was on the ground while the defendant covered his mouth, limiting his ability to breathe. He has also disclosed nanny was laying on the stairs, [which] the defendant had bashed her head against repeatedly.”

Defense Ricky Elmore said his client did not mean to kill his mother and just wanted gas money.

“John came at him the wrong way,” Elmore reportedly said during closing arguments. “His flight-or-fight clicked in and he started assaulting John.”

But no matter his state of mind, prosecutors argued, there was no excuse to kill a woman whom he supposedly loved.

“If that is a momma’s boy that left his mom for dead that way, God help that mom,” prosecutor Melanie Shekita told the jury during her closing arguments.

Background: The location where Mitchell crashed and was returned to custody (WXIN).

At 36, murder defendant Orlando Mitchell will be a very, very old man if he somehow manages to live out his punishment for gunning down Krystal Walton, 32, the mother of his son, outside a day care. Records in Marion County, Indiana, show he was sentenced Tuesday to 66 years in prison for killing her and violating a no-contact order on Sept. 16, 2022. The 746 days of time-served credit — a little more than two years — puts a small dent in his remaining time.

This does not, however, take into account his upcoming murder trial for strangling Marion County Sheriff’s Deputy John Durm, 61, during a failed escape attempt on July 10, 2023. This is currently scheduled for August 2026.

As previously reported, Mitchell waited outside a day care in Indianapolis as Walton separately arrived. Walton dropped off her children at the facility around 7:30 a.m., and that’s when Mitchell ambushed her, gunning her down.

Police spoke with Mitchell’s grandmother at the scene, who told them that she had not spoken to her son in over a month because he had threatened to kill Walton and make it a “murder-suicide,” NBC affiliate WTHR reported.

A few hours after the shooting, officers received a tip about Mitchell’s vehicle, which was seen at the day care around the time of the shooting.

Mitchell was shot in the leg during a confrontation with officers. As he was being wheeled into the ambulance, he was not shy about admitting to killing Walton.

“I shot that b—,” he said, according to WTHR. “I shot that b— in the face.”

The fatal shooting followed years in which Mitchell terrorized the victim.

“If he couldn’t see his son, she wasn’t gonna be in his life either,” his mother told officers, relaying one of his threats, according to an affidavit obtained by Indianapolis Fox affiliate WXIN.

Mitchell in 2021 was charged with choking the then-pregnant Walton and threatening to kill her. He dodged jail time with a guilty plea in July 2022, but violated the protective order in August 2022 by getting into the home of Walton’s mother, and telling the victim, “If you call the police, it’ll be the last thing you do.”

The next day, he texted her, writing, “I promise on my life I won’t stop until you lose everything.”

In 2023, as Mitchell faced charges for killing Walton, he used his handcuff chain to strangle Deputy Durm, a 38-year veteran, and stole his sheriff’s van. He crashed that, authorities said. Back to custody he went, and according to authorities, one more murder on his soul.

The man charged with killing his attorney brother allegedly returned to the crime scene with family, and cops arrested him in front of a media outlet.

Christopher Eaves, 49, is currently held on a $1.5 million bond, and if he manages to get out of custody pending trial, he cannot communicate with his own and his brother’s family, according to AZ Family.

Police in Phoenix, Arizona, claim that he carried out the shooting Friday, according to Fox affiliate KSAZ. Surveillance footage from next door recorded gunshots.

“The defendant went over to the victim’s house early yesterday morning and shot the victim, fired multiple shots,” prosecutors reportedly said. “He returned to his house with his parents, and Phoenix Police found multiple loaded weapons in the defendant’s car.”

Officers arrived to find the victim, James “Artie” Eaves, 51, dead.

The outlet’s cameras were there when defendant Eaves arrived at the cops and arrested him.

Authorities have yet to convey an alleged motive.

James Eaves was a respected lawyer, working for Sanders and Parks Attorneys at Law.

“Artie was a close friend, amazing attorney and colorful raconteur; his death leaves a hole in all of our hearts,” firm president Robin Burgess said in a statement obtained by Fox 10 reporter Lindsey Ragas. “Our thoughts are with his family at this terrible time.”

As part of his career, James Eaves also represented the county, working for the transition team for former Maricopa County Attorney Allister Adel in 2019, according to AZ Family.

“Artie Eaves was a dear friend and colleague to so many of us at the Maricopa County Atty’s Office,” Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said in a statement released Friday. “Today’s tragedy has not yet sunk in but one thing is for certain: Artie will be deeply missed. I am praying for his entire family and would ask others to do the same.”

Texas grandfather Jorge Arbaiza, 61, was just trying to pick up Happy Meals at a McDonald’s for his grandchildren when he got caught up in an unrelated dispute between two groups, according to Harris County authorities and his wife. One of the bullets fatally struck him.

His wife, Teresa Arbaiza, was with the two children in their car and called him after she saw an armed man, heard gunshots, and witnessed people running for safety out of the restaurant, according to CBS Houston affiliate KHOU. She could not enter the restaurant, or else leave the scared children behind.

“I’m dying. I’m going to die’” he reportedly said in his final words to her on March 16. His wife said he had been shot five times.

Arbaiza’s final act was to make the sign of the cross and pray as he died, authorities said.

“What struck a nerve for our team and I was this; Mr. Arbaiza’s lasting gesture as he took his last breath, was him making the sign of the cross of Jesus Christ and praying,” Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said. “May he Rest in Peace.”

Gonzalez announced Thursday that Antoine Ridge, 24, was arrested for murder.

Another person was reportedly struck in the incident but survived.

At the time of the shooting, Ridge also faced warrants for aggravated assault of a family member with a deadly weapon, and reckless driving. He is held on a $1 million bond. Authorities vaguely described the shooting as gang-related.

They ask that anyone with information call the sheriff’s office or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477). One of the groups involved in the shooting was in a maroon SUV, and the other was in a white sedan, though authorities said they managed to track down one of the vehicles.

“He was crazy for his grandkids,” Teresa reportedly said of her husband, Jorge.

A Texas court has sentenced a man for murdering a cancer researcher who had been out jogging.

As Law&Crime previously reported, police in the city of Plano said that Bakari Abiona Moncrief, 33, tried to break into a local home before fatally attacking Sarmistha Sen, 43, on a nearby trail the morning of Aug. 1, 2020.

“I ain’t a coward,” he told an officer.

Police had noted blood on his shirt and DNA on his body.

He pleaded guilty on Dec. 2, 2024, and was sentenced to life in prison on Dec. 16, 2024, but officers announced the case’s end on Monday. Prison records show is he becomes eligible for parole in 2050.

Sen’s husband organized a GoFundMe campaign and ultimately raised $51,515 in her memory.

“We are creating this GoFundMe page in memory of Sarmistha Sen,” the campaign stated. “The fund will be used for charities that are devoted to issues that Sarmistha deeply cared about such as Cancer Awareness, Cancer research, healthy living and protection of environment.”

Insetl left: Cody Guccione (Lafayette Parish Jail). Inset right: Leo Jack (Melancon Funeral Home). Background: Scene in Lafayette, Louisiana, where Guccione stabbed Jack to death (KATC).

A jury in Louisiana last week convicted a 33-year-old man who stabbed his friend more than a dozen times before stuffing his body in a closet and walking out of the victim’s apartment wearing his clothing.

Cody Guccione was found guilty Friday of second-degree murder in the death of 32-year-old Leo Jack, the Lafayette Parish District Attorney’s Office said in a press release. Prosecutors said Guccione and Jack had been friends for about three years. Guccione knocked on Jack’s apartment door just before 6 p.m. Feb. 3, 2021. When Jack answered, Guccione attacked, stabbing him 13 times in the head, neck and torso. The suspect then dragged Jack’s body to a back bedroom and shoved him inside a closet. A neighbor was able to pin down for prosecutors the time of the incident as he testified he heard a loud fight in the apartment below him.

More from Law&Crime: ‘You will always be a coward’: Woman gets 8 years for role in killing of man found in a park bound with zip ties with mouth taped shut

Guccione proceeded to put on Jack’s clothing, including a “very distinctive” pair of shoes. Surveillance video showed Guccione walking out of the apartment wearing Jack’s clothes and carrying a trash can. The defendant returned to the apartment a few hours later to rip down Jack’s doorbell camera, video showed. Investigators also obtained cellphone data that placed Guccione at the scene. U.S. Marshals arrested him about five days after the murder and prosecutors later secured an indictment.

Prosecutors did not give a motive for the crime.

“I want to commend the jury in this case, who were very attentive during this fairly lengthy trial and were able to hear the witnesses and see the evidence and convict this defendant in this case. They gave our victim’s family some comfort that the person who killed their family member was convicted for this murder,” said Andi Lex, the assistant district attorney who prosecuted the case.

Sentencing is set for March 11. Guccione faces up to life in prison.

Jack’s obituary said he was a lifelong resident of Lafayette, which is some 55 miles west of Baton Rouge.

“‘Yola’ as he was affectionately known, was a genuine person whose smile would light up any room. He had a giving spirit and had a way of making everyone laugh. He will be truly missed by all those fortunate enough to know him,” the obituary reads.

Jonathan Bates, left, was arrested in Georgia more than a year after he skipped a court hearing for allegedly murdering his wife Cynde Bates, right, back in 2017. (Jonathan Bates: Dawson County Sheriff’s Office; Cynde Bates: Facebook)

A Georgia jury this week convicted a man who skipped a court hearing and spent more than a year on the run avoiding charges that he murdered his wife in front of their young children in 2017.

Jonathan Bates was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his wife Cynde Bates, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and WSB report. He also was convicted of manslaughter, aggravated assault and cruelty to children.

As Law&Crime previously reported, the Dawson Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Marshals Service arrested Bates in April. A bench warrant has been out for Bates’ arrest ever since he failed to show up to a court hearing in October 2022, records show.

Bates is accused of killing his wife Cynde Bates, 28, at their home in Dallas, Georgia, in May 2017. According to his indictment, he allegedly pushed her, causing her to fall and hit her head on a love seat. The incident allegedly happened in front of the couple’s children, ages 4 and 7.

Cynde Bates was later declared brain-dead and died at a hospital, court documents say.

Jonathan Bates allegedly told a police officer that he pushed her when she tried to hug him. She had previously accused him of domestic violence and told family members she was planning to file for divorce.

Cops arrested him, but in June 2017, a judge said there was not enough evidence for the case to move forward on the murder charges and only bound over the case for simple battery. The decision outraged Cynthia Bates’ family members.

“Her kids are lost without her,” Bates’ sister Sandy Dement told Atlanta’s WSB. “Her family is lost without her. We don’t get to talk to her anymore.”

WSB reported the judge had ties to Jonathan Bates’ family. He later recused himself.

A grand jury later indicted Jonathan Bates, reinstating the murder charges. He posted a $16,500 bond, which led to him skipping the October 2022 court hearing. His lawyers claim his wife’s death was an accident.

A Georgia woman convicted of murdering and burning the body of her husband, a prominent Atlanta-area attorney, was sentenced to life in prison after a Dec. 5 sentencing hearing in which she claimed that the real killer was the man’s son.

Melody Walker Farris, 64, of Georgia was convicted last month for the 2018 murder of lawyer Gary Wayne Farris, who was the 58-year-old managing partner of the Atlanta office of midsize law firm Burr & Forman at the time of his death, Law360 reports.

Gary Wayne Farris was the chair of Burr & Forman’s lending practice and a member of the executive committee, the article reports. He was a graduate of the University of Alabama School of Law.

Publications with coverage besides Law360 include Court TV, WXIA-TV, Courthouse News Service, Fox 5 Atlanta and the Independent.

Witnesses said Farris had two affairs before her husband’s death at their farm in Alpharetta, Georgia. She and her husband had also argued about money, and she stood to benefit if he died, prosecutors said. The Independent cited a report by the Cherokee Tribune & Ledger News that Farris was the beneficiary of a $2 million life insurance policy.

During the sentencing hearing, Farris said she has kept the real killer’s identity secret for six years. Courthouse News Service reported on her words.

“I want the world to know who did this. Not only did I not do this, I know who did,” Farris said. “I know Scott killed his father.”

Farris said her mother had advised her to take the blame for the killing, but she would no longer protect her son Scott Farris. Farris said she saw Scott Farris coming from the burn pile, where the remains had been found, and described other circumstances that she found suspicious.

The defense previously suggested that Scott Farris could be involved in the murder because he was missing a gun that had the same kind of bullets used in the killing, according to Courthouse News. Defense lawyer Michael Ray said investigators did not search for evidence in Scott Farris’ room, which was filthy in contrast to his spotless bathroom.

Investigators first thought that Gary Wayne Farris may have fallen onto the burn pile during a medical emergency. They later found a bullet in his rib cage.

A Wyoming man was found guilty of murdering his wheelchair-bound landlord after he tried to evict him from his rental property.

Burdick Nelson Seminole was convicted on all counts by a jury on Friday after being indicted for the first-degree murder of Michael Standing Elk. He was also found guilty of discharging a firearm during a crime of violence, and causing death with a firearm during a crime of violence. The verdict came after a four-day trial.

The confrontation between tenant and landlord occurred on Aug. 8, 2023 after Standing Elk evicted Seminole from the property he was renting on the Wind River Indian Reservation because, according to court filings from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Seminole was “using drugs and bringing young females to the residence to get them high.”

Once Seminole was gone, Standing Elk started renting the property to other people, but Seminole returned to confront his former landlord for “talking smack.” According to witnesses who spoke to police, Seminole reportedly entered Standing Elk’s property, where he was in bed asleep, and started slapping him in the head, telling him to “talk s— now.” As the argument between the two men heated up, Standing Elk’s partner called 911. Standing Elk was able to get out of bed and into his wheelchair, and the verbal fight continued in the living room.

But Standing Elk had a gun of his own. In his interview with police, Seminole said that he taunted Standing Elk, saying, “You better make sure it’s loaded,” and “Better make sure you got f—–‘ ammo.” He then “pistol-whipped” Standing Elk, then “turned around and heard a boom, but he didn’t know what hit him,” according to the affidavit.

After Standing Elk failed to fire at Seminole because his gun jammed, he reportedly said, “Okay, I’m done. You win, Burdick.” That was when witnesses testified that Seminole shot Standing Elk. Another tenant rushed into the room and fired a shot at Seminole, hitting him. Seminole told police that his “memory blacked out” during this period.

In his statement to police, Seminole said he went back to the house to confront Standing Elk for “talking smack,” claiming that “Standing Elk was threatening his daughter,” according to Cowboy State Daily.

Seminole was arrested at Wind River Family and Community Health Care clinic, where he drove himself after being shot by one of the tenants in the house. The affidavit said that was where police recovered “a black Springfield XDS gun from the front passenger seat of Seminole’s vehicle.” An agent at the scene reportedly overheard Seminole say, “I shouldn’t have picked up that gun.”

Seminole will be sentenced on Feb. 6. He faces a life sentence.
