A death investigation and missing person case has been unfolding in Georgia that’s unlike anything local authorities have ever seen, with cops spending nearly a month looking for the fiance of a Spelman College instructor who was found dead and floating in a lake, along with her partner’s boat and shoes. The U.S. Secret Service has even been called in to assist, according to officials.

“There’s never been anybody looked for like this,” Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills told local Fox affiliate WAGA this week as police entered day 22 of looking for Gary Jones, husband of Joycelyn Wilson, at Lake Oconee — the last place they were seen alive together — in what officials have dubbed the largest search effort in county history.

Jones, who is believed to be dead, was boating with Wilson on Feb. 8 when they disappeared sometime that evening. His boat was found circling a portion of Lake Oconee with no one on board, roughly seven miles away from where he and Wilson were caught on video at a boat launch. Cops say they can be seen putting the vessel into the water together. Witness testimony and phone records show that whatever happened with the couple unfolded between 5:01 p.m. and 5:24 p.m., according to Sills.

“This is a huge area,” he told Fox and ABC affiliate WGXA last week. “Not to mention the cold weather and the cold water preventing normal surfacing. There is a Herculean effort going on here trying to locate his body.”

Asked why Wilson’s body would surface but not Jones, Sills said: “There was some air, and some water in her lungs. The crime lab pathologist has not rendered her final opinion yet.”

Authorities believe Wilson took several photographs with her phone before she died and went into the lake. Wilson’s phone was found in her hand when her body was found, according to police, but investigators have been unable to bypass a security code that’s keeping it locked — that’s where the Secret Service comes in.

Sills says agents have been trying to help unlock Wilson’s phone; investigators can look at its data and see a final photo was taken at 4:59 p.m. just before it lost connection and power. But they can’t view the image until the phone is unlocked.

“We don’t know what happened after that,” Sills told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Tuesday.

He said the Secret Service has struggled, as well, to open Wilson’s phone, so they’re now enlisting Georgia’s Department of Corrections to assist them with the investigation as DOC claims to have a machine that could possibly crack the security code. “We’re getting ready to take it to Forsyth (DOC headquarters) today,” Sills said.

More from Law&Crime: ‘If I can’t have her, nobody can’: Man stabbed ex-wife 95 times after learning she met someone new, claiming in court he ‘loved her very much’

The sheriff acknowledged that there have been rumors and theories going around about Wilson and Jones — regarding their relationship and plans to marry in a few weeks — but Sills declined to delve further.

“This is a death investigation,” Sills told WGXA after being asked about the possibility of an argument happening between the couple that led to a physical altercation. “We are investigating any aspect of that. Right now, I’m more convinced, unfortunately, Mr. Jones has drowned.”

Search efforts have been centered around a 200-acre triangular area at Lake Oconee, according to police. Activities have included the use of dogs and divers seeking to locate Jones’ body. On Monday, authorities suspended the water search until further notice.

“(Department of Natural Resources) officers and Putnam County Sheriff’s Deputies will continue to conduct daily shoreline searches and if weather conditions improve, search dogs will be deployed again in the near future,” Sills wrote in a Facebook post. “We have deployed aircraft, all available underwater technological devices, and professional divers in our efforts. I cannot remember such an extensive use of government and civilian personnel and resources for an incident such as this on Lakes Oconee and Sinclair in the last 40 years.”

Six people who have been missing for nearly six months, including two 3-year-old children, have prompted police to sound the alarm about a suspected online cult that they allege is operated by a man currently serving 18 years in prison for child molestation.

Rashad Jamal, also known as Rashad Jamal White, is a self-professed online “prophet” who runs a YouTube channel where he describes himself as the leader of the “University of Cosmic Intelligence.” Less advertised on his own website is his conviction on a single count of child molestation and another count of cruelty toward a child last August, Law&Crime previously reported.

Despite the fact that Jamal is behind bars, police in Missouri are now spreading the word investigators believe that in the time since Jamal was sentenced, four adults who started following him online have cut ties with their loved ones, quit their jobs and otherwise gone rogue after being lured into Jamal’s bizarre web of conspiracy theories.

In videos reviewed by Law&Crime’s Sierra Gillespie last week, Jamal is seen in one post proclaiming that “winter is not real” and that it is actually “a weapon” with the “true name of sub-zero technology.”

“They make fake clouds, they put ice crystals in the clouds, use fake 5G towers to activate those ice crystals in the clouds,” Jamal rambles, before later adding that birds seen on power lines are “government drones [who] report surveillance.”

Jamal also promotes polygamy and encourages followers to go into debt by living off their credit cards, meditate in the nude in public including at their homes in their front yards and backyards, declare sovereign citizenship and more.

Police in Missouri think Naaman Williams, 29, Gerielle German, 26, German’s 3-year-old son Ashton Mitchell, Mikayla Thompson, 23, Ma’Kayla Wickerson, 25, and Wickerson’s 3-year-old daughter, Malaiyah, have been sucked into the cult.

Mikayla Thompson, left, Gerielle German, back, and Ma’Kayla Wickerson appear on security footage obtained by Berkeley Police in Missouri and shared with Law&Crime.

German’s mother Shelita Gibson told St. Louis NBC affiliate KSDK her daughter abruptly vanished last summer from Mississippi after telling her she was going to Missouri without any explanation. Wickerson’s mother Cartisha Morgan said she thinks her daughter was suffering from postpartum depression and that Jamal preyed on her vulnerabilities.

Other friends and family say those who went missing cut off contact, quit jobs, and maxed out credit cards.

Cult expert Rick Alan Ross told Law&Crime that while running an online cult from prison may sound improbable, it isn’t.

Warren Jeffs still operates the extremist Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, or FLDS, as he serves out a life sentence in Texas for sexually assaulting two underage girls he made his “spiritual” brides, Ross noted.

Jamal fancies himself a rapper as well a god and vows on his website that he is “geared toward enlightening and illuminating the minds of the carbonated beings,” or Black and Latino people.

The approach isn’t new.

Another cult leader known as Eligio Bishop, or “NatureBoy,” made similar proposals to his followers online for the group “Melanation” in 2016. He ultimately coaxed victims in Georgia to do things like funnel him huge amounts of cash, move to Honduras and toil on land they purchased for him.

One of Bishop’s victims described rampant sexual abuse to Georgia NBC affiliate WXIA in 2022.

Back in Missouri, the Berkeley Police Department say German and her 3-year-old son Ashton were last seen at a Quality Inn just outside of the airport in St. Louis in August.

Police know she, the boy, and the four others missing were last known to be renting an apartment in Berkeley. They were evicted in August and according to The Root, the home was rented in Ma’Kayla Wickerson’s name. Police says Wickerson has changed her name and now goes by Intuahma Aquama Auntil.

Jamal told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in an interview from prison this week that he does not know the six missing people reported missing. He also denies being a cult leader, saying he merely expresses his opinions online on everything from molecular biology to Black history.

“I am pretty sure I have never met these people,” he said, adding he doesn’t know who comes in and out of his livestreams online.

Though the six missing people allegedly connected to Jamal were living in Missouri, they are not all from the state. Naaman Williams is from Washington, D.C., and Gerielle German and her son are from Mississippi.

Berkley Police Department Major Steve Runge said this week the suspected cult members have been seen running naked in the rain outside of the Berkeley home. They have also been seen digging things up from the dirt.

Runge also said the FBI is helping them in their search.

Meanwhile, as of Tuesday, a Change.org petition urging Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp to clear Jamal of his child molestation conviction is just shy of 10,000 signatures.

Police identified a woman found dead on March 29, 2011, in this Arvin, California vineyard with her head and thumbs chopped off and her body drained of her blood as Ada Kaplan, 64. The Kern County Sheriff’s Office is still trying to identify her killer. (Google Maps)

Nearly 13 years after cops found a woman without her head or thumbs and with her blood drained from her body, they now know her name.

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office last week said it identified the woman found dead in a grape vineyard in Arvin, California, on March 29, 2011, as 64-year-old Ada Beth Kaplan. The scene that day in Arvin, which is about 30 miles south of Bakersfield, was brutal. In addition to having her head and thumbs chopped off, the woman now known as Kaplan also was nude and placed in a prone position that investigators considered sexual.

Detectives believe she was killed elsewhere and carefully placed in the vineyard. Coroners categorized the death as a homicide but could not determine the cause of death.

Ray Pruitt, then an investigator with Kern County Sheriff’s Department, described the scene as “surreal” in a 2018 interview with NBC affiliate KGET.

“I remember looking at the detectives and the sergeant on scene and the coroner investigator who had arrived on the scene and we were all kind of speechless,” Pruitt said. “We were all just looking at each other trying to get our minds around what we were looking at.”

Pruitt said the murder was one “that you come across maybe once in an entire career, maybe never.”

“I’ve never seen anything like that in my life,” Pruitt told KGET. “I’ve seen some pretty gruesome crime scenes and this was just … it was creepy.”

The sheriff’s office had little success for years. Missing persons’ records and fingerprints turned up empty. Two out-of-county cases generated interest but were ruled out by DNA. Investigators submitted specimens to the U.S. Department of Justice so they could create a DNA profile but there were no hits.

After the DNA Doe Project worked with the sheriff’s office in 2020 to successfully identify a woman found dead in 1980, investigators then asked the organization to create a genealogy profile in the 2011 case. Volunteer genealogists were able to find DNA matches of cousins of the then-identified woman and built out an extensive family tree spanning eight generations, the organization said in a press release.

The genealogists learned three of her four grandparents were from Eastern Europe and were of Jewish descent.

“Our team worked long and hard for this identification,” said team leader Missy Koski. “Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry is often complicated to unravel. When we brought in an expert in Jewish records and genealogy, that made a huge difference.”

Last July, the group identified two potential family members who lived on the East Coast. The family members agreed to provide their DNA and investigators were able to positively identify Kaplan. Investigators learned that Kaplan’s family never reported her missing.

Her killer and the location of her death remain unknown.
