Inset: Hunter Jackson, left, and Odin Ratliff (Utah County Sheriff’s Office). Background: Kent Barlow (KSL/YouTube).

A Utah jury determined a 28-year-old man acted with “depraved indifference” when he drove 120 mph while high on methamphetamine and plowed through horse stables where he hit and killed two toddlers who were playing with toy trucks.

Kent Cody Barlow was convicted Friday of depraved indifference homicide in the deaths of 3-year-olds Odin Ratliff and Hunter Jackson. Barlow on May 2, 2022, was driving recklessly and ignoring his passengers’ repeated pleas for him to slow down as he was sped along Tiffany Lane in Eagle Mountain, which is about 30 miles northwest of Provo. He lost control and crashed into the Cedar Valley Stables, the Utah County Attorney’s Office said in a press release.

More from Law&Crime: ‘I am going to watch you die’: Woman who fatally ran over the father of her 3 children on an interstate highway learns her fate

Michael Starrs, deputy Utah County attorney, told jurors in his closing argument the boys were having a great time playing with each other, picking up chicken eggs and chasing cats, according to a courtroom report from local NBC affiliate KSL. But that fun turned into tragedy when Barlow floored the accelerator, traveling 120 mph in a 45 mph zone and headed toward the stables despite seeing all the activity there.

“The signs of life were there,” Starrs said. “The signs of life were ignored. The signs of life were obvious. They weren’t hidden, they weren’t concealed. We know that Kent Barlow would have seen all those cars.”

Prosecutors also pointed out he had previously been convicted of driving over 100 mph some three years before the fatal crash and ignored a judge’s warning that his speeding could prove deadly.

Barlow’s attorney Justin Morrison conceded that his client was high and behind the wheel, but argued he did not mean to lose control of the car and certainly had no intention of hitting the boys. Barlow is not “a cold-blooded killer,” Morrison said.

But for the families of Odin and Hunter, there was never a question of the defendant’s guilt.

“Hearing the words guilty of depraved indifference murder is what we’ve been fighting for,” Odin’s mother Theresa Ratliff told KSL after the verdict. “That’s what we got because that is what he is guilty of.”

Barlow is slated to be sentenced on June 30. He faces 15 years to life in prison.

Two men from Colorado were arrested after they allegedly tried to smuggle tens of thousands of dollars worth of methamphetamine and tobacco into a federal prison in Louisiana by launching the contraband over a security wall using a “professionally manufactured” cannon.

Jose Francisco Herrera Munoz, 18, and Angel Gonzales Gutierrez, 19, were taken into custody and charged with one count each of attempting to introduce contraband into a penal institution and one count each of attempting to distribute methamphetamine, authorities announced.

According to a news release from the Grant Parish Sheriff’s Office, the two suspects were attempting to “smuggle in $112,000 worth of tobacco and $89,500 worth of methamphetamine into the Federal Prison, by using a cannon.”

The incident took place in unincorporated Grant Parish, Louisiana, which is about 120 miles north of Lafayette. The parish is home to U.S. Penitentiary Pollock, a high-security facility for male inmates that is overseen by the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.

The sheriff’s office said that the two suspects, both of whom are from Greely, Colorado, had planned to use the cannon to “launch the items over a security fence onto the grounds of the Federal Prison.” The cannon, which was propelled by compressed air, had “a range of shooting items more than 350 feet,” authorities said.

Grant Parish Sheriff Steven McCain told Louisiana Radio Network that the two suspects’ attempt at getting the drugs in the facility was not successful.

“Thanks to a very observant deputy, he was able to stop it before they were able to get the drugs into the prison,” McCain told the network. “That much meth would have just been devastating in that population.”

The sheriff also told the network that the cannon they recovered was not a homemade gadget.

“This was not something that was homemade,” McCain said. “It was bought, and it was professionally manufactured, and it’s very powerful.”

Following the arrests of the suspects, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) submitted a detainer for Munoz, who they said was in the country illegally.

A 23-year-old man in New York will be going to prison after he called the police and unwittingly exposed his own Walter White-esque drug lab last year, which he had been falsely operating as a legitimate business.

Matthew Leshinsky pleaded guilty on Thursday to multiple drug charges, including unlawful manufacture of methamphetamine in the third degree, authorities announced.

“This defendant was operating a Breaking Bad-style drug lab and tried to conceal it under the guise of a legitimate business,” Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney said in a statement. “He then inadvertently turned himself in when he reported that a burglary occurred at that same business.”

According to the DA’s office, Leshinsky called 911 at about 3:30 a.m. on June 7 to report a burglary in progress at his “purported business establishment, Quantitative Laboratories, LLC, in Ronkonkoma, New York.”

Once there, first responders saw “broken glass” at the entrance of what appeared to be a laboratory.

“While the officers continued investigating, they discovered what appeared to be a clandestine laboratory that was involved in the manufacture, production, and preparation of methamphetamine and dimethyltryptamine (DMT), a hallucinogenic substance, amongst other controlled substances,” the release states.

A search uncovered more than 100 pieces of “lab equipment, chemical reagents and solvents used in the manufacture, production, or preparation of methamphetamine, as well as substances that resulted from the production or preparation of methamphetamine,” authorities said.

Authorities seized more than $40,000 in cash, a “quantity” of MDMA, which is also known as ecstasy, more than three ounces of meth, over 625,000 milligrams of “pure ketamine,” and 20 plastic 55-gallon drums containing Gamma-butyrolactone (GBL), chemically similar to Gamma hydroxybutyric acid (GHB), or “the date rape drug.”

Leshinsky is set to appear in court again on March 20 for his sentencing hearing.

A Minnesota man is behind bars after a sexual encounter involving fantasy and fetish aspects left another man dead, authorities say.

Delwayne W. Center, 40, stands accused of one count of murder in the third degree – by selling, giving or distributing a controlled substance, over the May death of Daniel J. Aldridge, 47.

Minnesota is one of only three U.S. jurisdictions with a third-degree murder statute still on the books. The maximum sentence for third-degree murder is 25 years in state prison and a $40,000 fine. Sentencing guidelines in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, however, recommend 12.5 years for a first-time third-degree murder offense.

The underlying incident occurred in an apartment with a view of Loring Park in downtown Minneapolis, according to a criminal complaint in the case obtained by the Star Tribune.

At around 11 a.m. on May 12, the defendant himself dialed 911 regarding an “unconscious male who was likely deceased,” the complaint reportedly says. Upon arrival at the apartment on 15th Street West, responding officers allegedly found Aldridge on the floor of a bedroom. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Center allegedly volunteered several details to law enforcement.

According to the complaint obtained by the paper, the defendant said he and the deceased man had agreed to meet at his apartment the afternoon before — at around 1 p.m. — after first communicating with one another on a dating app. Then, “the two engaged in sexual activities including bondage,” the complaint reportedly alleges.

Center allegedly told police that Aldridge was the one being constrained and that while the victim was tied up, he injected him with methamphetamine from a syringe as “part of the roleplay,” according to the complaint. The defendant stressed the dose administered to the other man was the same he would have typically used on himself. At some point, however, Aldridge allegedly sought to escape from his constraints — but Center kept him confined, the complaint alleges.

Eventually, Center injected Aldridge with a second dose of meth, he allegedly admitted. Then, the victim started to have a “concerning reaction.” This upset the alleged killer because the tied up man “could not handle his drugs,” according to the criminal complaint obtained by Bring Me The News, a Minnesota-based online news website.

Aldridge would go on to pass out on the floor of Center’s apartment, police allege. The defendant allegedly said he heard “gurgling” and saw the presence of vomit on his mouth, but declined to check on the dying man — instead he went to bed, the complaint alleges.

After waking up, Center told police Aldridge was “motionless, cold and appeared to have ‘rigor mortis,”” the complaint says.

The defendant did not immediately call law enforcement, according to police. First, Center admitted, he watched some TV. Then, after realizing the growing smell, he got concerned that he would “get in trouble for buying drugs,” according to the complaint. So, he started to clean up, getting rid of all the remaining drugs and paraphernalia, police say.

It would be five months before the local medical examiner’s office would find Aldridge’s death was a homicide due to an overdose.

The defendant appeared in Hennepin County District Court on Wednesday of this week. He is currently being detained in lieu of $500,000 bail. He is next slated to appear in court on Jan. 24, 2024.
