A Connecticut lawyer was found guilty of first-degree manslaughter Friday for fatally shooting a man who attacked him in the parking lot of his law firm.

Robert L. Fisher Jr., 78, of Connecticut was convicted after jurors deliberated for three hours, report Law360, CT Insider and the Register Citizen.

Connecticut law imposes a “duty to retreat” before using force that can cause death or serious injury, according to the Register Citizen and a previous Connecticut Insider story. The duty applies only when a person can safely retreat and is outside the home or the office.

The state does not have a stand-your-ground law, which allows the use of deadly force without a duty to retreat, even outside the home or the workplace, when a person reasonably thinks that it is necessary to prevent death or serious injury.

The June 2021 incident began, Fisher had testified, when Matthew Bromley pulled him from his car and began punching him, claiming that the lawyer had “ruined my life,” according to CT Insider. Then Bromley spit in his face, according to Fisher’s testimony, described by CT Insider.

“I was in fear,” Fisher said. “He was so impossibly angry his face was contorted with rage. I have never seen anything like it. I undid my seat belt and kicked him, so he would be farther away. … I got out of the car to face him. … He charged me in the chest. He was shouting. ‘I am going to kill you.’”

Fisher, who was 74 years old at the time of the incident, said he fired his gun when Bromley charged toward him and reached for his arm. Prosecutors said Fisher could have retreated to his car and locked the door, rather than shoot Bromley.

Prosecutors had cited eyewitness accounts that Fisher stepped forward from his car’s open door before shooting. The forward step showed that the shooting was in revenge for the attack, rather than self-protection, the prosecution claimed.

In his closing argument, Litchfield County State’s Attorney David Shannon described what he thought that Fisher could have been thinking, according to Law360.

“How dare this little man in his beat-up old Saab, wearing his wife beater tank top and his cargo shorts, assault him?” Shannon said. “How dare he [Bromley] do that? He [Fisher] was going to refuse to be a victim. That’s what happened here.”

Steven Joseph Cozens, 27, was arrested on Aug. 28, 2022, and charged with second-degree murder after the body of his 26-year-old girlfriend (who was only identified as “Jennifer” under Florida’s Marsy’s Law) was found wrapped in a sheet under the bed in a room at an America’s Best Value Inn located in Bradenton. Her body was found by the housekeeping staff, who called police. Cozens was read his Miranda rights after being found by police near the scene. According to reporting by WFLA, a local NBC affiliate, he confessed to police to killing his girlfriend, saying that he stabbed her “a lot.”

The physical confrontation between Cozens and his girlfriend, who were both living at the hotel at the time of her murder, occurred after the two had a verbal argument. Cozens then reportedly told police that he then stabbed her several times. He fled the hotel after trying to conceal her body but didn’t get that far.

Cozens was held in custody without bail, and he was indicted on Jan. 17, 2023, of first-degree murder. He was scheduled to stand trial on Dec. 16 but instead pleaded guilty on Dec. 19 to second-degree murder with a weapon. A judge sentenced him to 60 years in state prison with credit for time served. He has 30 days to appeal.

Assistant State Attorney Suzanne O’Donnell said in a statement provided to the press that “[d]ue to the excellent work of the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit, the defendant was apprehended within hours of this murder and made a full confession. This sentence will not bring Jennifer back but hopefully it will provide some comfort to her family.”

Hein Lwin (Maricopa County Jail).

A 26-year-old man in Arizona has been arrested for allegedly killing his 2-year-old stepchild, beating the boy to death and explaining to authorities that the toddler was “a lot.”

Hein Lwin was taken into custody in October and is currently facing charges of premeditated first-degree murder in the child’s slaying, authorities announced.

According to a news release from the Peoria Police Department, officers at about 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24, responded to a call at an apartment complex in the area near 108th Avenue and Olive Avenue. The caller identified himself as Lwin and told the emergency dispatcher that his stepchild “was choking on a cloth.”

“Peoria Officers and Peoria Fire-Medical attempted life-saving measures and transported the child to a local hospital,” police wrote in the release. “During the investigation, it was determined Hein physically abused the child multiple times, causing serious physical injuries. The child sadly passed away on October 27, 2024. Detectives later amended charges to First-Degree Murder while Hein was still in custody.”

A probable cause affidavit obtained by Phoenix, Arizona, CBS affiliate KTVK provided additional information about the circumstances of the child’s death.

The report states that when police and medics got to Lwin’s home, they noticed visible ligature marks on the victim’s neck.

In a subsequent interview with detectives, Lwin reportedly said that he put the boy down for a nap at about 3:30 p.m. and then went down to the gym in his apartment complex. He claimed that when he got back home between 30 and 40 minutes later, the child was lying on the floor in close proximity to a belt.

However, as the questioning continued, Lwin reportedly admitted that he had recently attended a session with a counselor and was frustrated. He then took that frustration out on his stepson, adding that the child was “a lot.” Lwin further confessed to detectives that throughout the day he struck the boy in the head with an open hand about 15 times.

Lwin also reportedly said that he had “rough-housed” with the child by tossing him onto the bed by the back of his shirt and swinging him in circles. Lwin claimed that when picking up the child by the shirt, the collar became tight around his neck and also said that while roughhousing, the boy struck his head on the headboard of the bed about three times and split his lip, KTVK reported.

Per the report, Lwin helped clean the boy’s lip, but saw the child about 40 minutes later having difficulty breathing and decided to call his wife and then called 911.

As the interview continued, police informed Lwin that his stepson was not likely to survive his injuries.

“I deserve everything that is coming to me,” Lwin reportedly said in response. He was then booked on charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault on a child, and child abuse before the charges were upgraded to murder, records show.

Lwin is currently being held in the Maricopa County Jail without bond. He is scheduled to make his next court appearance on Friday for an arraignment proceeding.

Henry “J.R.” Del-Rio, not pictured, is accused of killing Ashlee Berryman, seen here in photos from her obituary.

A man has been charged in the death of a 21-year-old mother killed when a bullet was fired in a crowded Massachusetts nightclub parking lot eight years ago by a suspected gang member who bragged about the killing and his associates tried to cover it up.

Henry “J.R.” Del-Rio, 27, faces the charge in the death of Ashlee Berryman. Del-Rio was indicted by a grand jury on charges including first-degree murder, assault and battery and weapons offenses.

“The conduct that Henry Del-Rio is alleged to have engaged in outside the Braza Grille was outrageous, and it ended in terrible tragedy,” Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said in a statement. “Ashlee Berryman, a completely innocent victim, was caught in a hail of gunfire and lost her life.

“Those actions ripped her from her then 3-year-old son as well as her other family and friends,” she added in a Friday news conference.

In the early morning of Aug. 13, 2015, a crowd of concertgoers gathered in the parking lot outside the Braza Bar & Grill in Everett, north of Boston. Berryman had gone to the concert to see her boyfriend, one of the performers.

In that parking lot was Del-Rio with his acquaintances — all allegedly associated with the East Side Money gang, prosecutors said.

At about 12:50 a.m., two men who had not been at the concert arrived in the area and began arguing with one of Del-Rio’s associates.

After the confrontation, Del-Rio allegedly drew a .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol and fired nine times at the men, and didn’t stop firing as the men ran. He struck one of the men in the feet and ankles.

A bullet hit Berryman in the back, fatally wounding her. An Everett police officer in the area at the time heard gunshots at 12:56 a.m. and responded. Berryman was found suffering from a gunshot wound and died at a hospital.

“You just took away a 3-year-old’s mother,” Berryman’s sister, Alex Berryman, told the Boston Globe then. “Maybe you don’t have a mother, and that’s why you’re such a monster. But if you did have a mother, or if you do have a mother, imagine growing up without her.”

Bullets also lodged into a wooden municipal sign, smashed through the front window of a Rite-Aid across the street and penetrated the roof of a passing car, prosecutors said.

In the days afterward, the suspect brazenly told people he was responsible for the shot that had killed Berryman.

Investigators also learned that his associates had agreed to conceal the truth of what had happened and talked about disposing of the murder weapon, which has never been found.

“This violent, predictively tragic behavior we will not forget, and we will not cease looking to get to the results,” Ryan said.

There’s nothing surprising about what took place here. What is surprising is that more people were not hurt, given the number of times that this gun was fired in a city that is extremely densely populated.”

Del-Rio is being held in connection with a federal case and was expected to be brought to Middlesex Superior Court to be arraigned later.

He has been in federal custody since December 2022 in a separate federal gun case, details of which she said would be revealed at his arraignment.

The Globe reported he was released from custody in September 2020 after a conviction for federal drug and weapons infractions.
