“May you live in interesting times.” For immigration lawyers, that old proverb is now a reality. Ever since the start of the second Trump administration, immigration lawyers have been busier than ever.

Whether it is dealing with Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids, deportations, executive orders slowing down the visa process, limiting birthright citizenship, rescinding Obama- and Biden-era immigration policies, or nervous clients worried about what the new regime might mean for them, immigration lawyers have plenty on their plates.

Technology, particularly generative artificial intelligence, can help with some of that increased workload.

In this episode of the Legal Rebels Podcast, Greg Siskind, an immigration lawyer and a tech enthusiast, talks to the ABA Journal’s Victor Li. They talk about how tech can help immigration lawyers work more efficiently, as well as just how much has changed in the immigration landscape since January.

Siskind is a founding partner at the law firm Siskind Susser and a co-founder of Visalaw.ai, a tech company that creates AI-powered software for immigration lawyers. He is also a 2024 ABA Journal Legal Rebel.

It’s a well-worn saying that the law always lags behind technology. It makes sense. We all remember the old song about how a bill becomes a law and how long the whole process can take. By the time you get to the verse about a president signing something into law, technology has either evolved into something even more cutting edge or become obsolete—replaced by a newer, shinier toy.

When it comes to data protection and privacy, some states have already taken the lead in trying to protect consumer data. But in these political times, expecting or hoping for the federal government to follow suit seems about as likely as seeing pigs fly. Throw in new revolutionary types of tech, such as generative artificial intelligence, and what was once just a lag has the potential to turn into a gulf.

In this episode of the Legal Rebels Podcast, Benjamin Mishkin, a member of Cozen O’Connor’s technology privacy and data security practice group, talks with the ABA Journal’s Victor Li about what the regulatory landscape looks like regarding data protection and privacy and what we can—and can’t—expect in the near future.

Welcome to 2025! The ABA Journal’s Legal Rebels Podcast is not usually in the business of making prognostications. Let’s face it: If we were, we’d be playing the lottery or putting bets on sports games and the stock market and not doing this. But it seems like a safe prediction to say generative artificial intelligence will dominate 2025—just like it did in 2024.

If last year was when generative AI went mainstream, could this year be the one when it gets even bigger? Will we see more people, law firms, companies and government agencies adopt, use or integrate it into their day-to-day activities? Will we see more rules and regulations from states or the federal government regarding its use? What about law schools and generative AI? Will we see more start to teach it? And will lawyers finally learn more about what to do, or not to do, when it comes to using it?

In this episode of the Legal Rebels Podcast, the ABA Journal’s Victor Li talks to Oliver Roberts, who will look ahead and make his best predictions as to where generative AI is heading. Roberts is the editor-in-chief of AI and the Law at the National Law Review; the co-chair of the AI practice group at Holtzman Vogel; and the CEO and co-founder of Wickard.ai, a legal AI startup in education and training.

What does the future hold for licensed paraprofessionals?: Much has been made of the gigantic access-to-justice gap in this country. According to a 2022 study by the Legal Services Corp., 92% of Americans do not receive any or enough help for a civil legal need. There are many reasons for this.

Tests into and out of law schools—what’s changing and why: Not much can strike more terror into the hearts of aspiring lawyers than the LSAT and the bar exam. Right now, these tests are having a moment.

Will generative artificial intelligence (finally) spell the end of the billable hour?: With the advent of generative artificial intelligence tools that can perform tasks in minutes but might take lawyers or legal professionals hours, could we finally see the end of the billable hour?

The future of DEI programs in the legal industry: The lack of diversity when it comes to race, gender, sexuality, disability and social class within the legal profession is nothing new. However, the last decade has marked a gradual increase in diversity across all fields.

The Modern Law Library

Horse-loving lawyer left the law to help run a Colorado ranch: Ami Cullen grew up loving horses and competing in hunter/jumper events. But when it came to her career, she decided that law would be her calling. She graduated from law school and began work with a law firm in Maryland working on medical-malpractice cases. Then a visit to a Colorado dude ranch changed everything.

‘The Originalism Trap’ author wants to see originalism dead, dead, dead: Originalism is the ascendant legal theory espoused by conservative legal thinkers, including the majority of U.S. Supreme Court justices. But far from being an objective framework for constitutional interpretation, says author and attorney Madiba K. Dennie, its true purpose is to achieve conservative political aims regardless of the historical record.

‘Watchdogs’ author has no regrets about choosing civil service over the NBA: Glenn Fine’s career-long crusade against corruption might have its roots in his college days. As a point guard for the Harvard basketball team, Fine had his personal best game Dec. 16, 1978, the same day that he interviewed for—and received—a Rhodes Scholarship. He put up 19 points against Boston College, including eight steals, and the team nearly eeked out a win against the favored Boston players. A remarkable day.

James Patterson dishes on his new legal thriller, ‘The #1 Lawyer’: James Patterson has written bestsellers in many genres. But as he tells the ABA Journal’s Lee Rawles in this episode of The Modern Law Library podcast, he has always been fascinated by legal thrillers, courtroom dramas and crime novels. He even considered becoming a lawyer—before his literary career took off.

‘The Lawyer Millionaire’ author shares the 7 biggest money mistakes lawyers can make: Finances are a fraught area for many attorneys. Despite a high earning potential, new lawyers often start out with a financial disadvantage because of the opportunity cost of the years devoted to school and bar prep, coupled with high student loans.

How to strike up conversations that build your book of business: Networking is something that comes naturally to some people. But if the idea of talking to strangers makes you break out into a cold sweat, there’s help and hope, says Deb Feder, author of the book After Hello: How to Build a Book of Business, One Conversation at a Time.

The year 2024 has been a momentous year for legal technology. Generative artificial intelligence continues to gain traction in an industry not known for adopting tech quickly or efficiently.

More money is flowing into legal tech than ever before, as several gigantic deals dominated the headlines and enlarged quite a few bank accounts. And the push for regulatory reform extended to attorney admissions—between a demand for an online bar exam and an exploration of alternative pathways to licensure, one of the longtime pillars of the legal profession could be ready to make way.

That’s just a few of the topics that will be covered in this special year-in-review episode of the Legal Rebels Podcast.

In this episode, Nicole Black, the principal legal insight strategist at AffiniPay—the parent company of LawPay, MyCase, Casepeer and Docketwise—speaks with the ABA Journal’s Victor Li. She is a nationally recognized author of Cloud Computing for Lawyers and is a co-author of Social Media for Lawyers: The Next Frontier, both published by the ABA. She is also a regular columnist for the ABA Journal.
