Jurors in North Carolina have convicted a man for murdering his mother and injuring his father in a beating he claimed was fueled by drugs and sleep deprivation.

Christopher McCullough was found guilty of first-degree murder Friday in the 2023 death of his 75-year-old mother Mary McCullough. Local ABC affiliate WTVD reported that McCullough was not convicted of other charges, included the attempted murder of his father and larceny of a dog.

He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The jury had deliberated for around seven hours after receiving the case on Thursday.

More from Law&Crime: ‘I wish you well in hell’: Daughter rejoices at sentencing of nurse mom who tortured her younger sister to death

The defendant’s father, John McCullough, testified against his son. According to a courtroom report from local CBS affiliate WNCN, the father told jurors ever since his son was seven, he was “uncontrollably violent” and had “superhuman-like strength.” They tried everything to treat his issues from sending to boarding school to stays at mental health hospitals. None of it worked. Eventually, he and his wife and obtained a domestic violence injunction against him and forbade him from entering their home.

But he ignored that order and entered the home on Aug. 8, 2023. He reportedly told jurors he was high on Adderall and other drugs and hadn’t slept in six days. He said he asked his parents for gas money. When they refused, he began beating his father — all in the presence of his 4-year-old son — though he did not admit to hurting his sickly mother, who used an oxygen tank and weighed just 100 pounds.

“Me and my dad got in a fight, I struck him twice to the ground, I noticed that my mother was face down,” he said, according to local NBC affiliate WRAL.

The younger McCullough then took his son and fled. Cops rushed to the home to aid the elder McCulloughs. There was blood everywhere and both victims were unconscious, cops testified.

“I noticed she had bruises and cuts on her arms,” Raleigh police Officer Phillip Merle said, per WNCN. “Because of the way she was laying, I noticed she had a large puddle of blood underneath her neck. My training officer asked who did this to her. And she was able to grunt out, ‘My son’.”

Love true crime? Sign up for our newsletter, The Law&Crime Docket, to get the latest real-life crime stories delivered right to your inbox.

She was rushed to the hospital where she died nearly a week later.

Christopher McCullough’s son, now 6, was not physically injured in the incident but has experienced post-traumatic stress disorder from witnessing the incident.

“[The boy] has disclosed witnessing the defendant hurting nanny and poppy,” his therapist Tara Pawlyk reportedly testified. “That poppy was on the ground while the defendant covered his mouth, limiting his ability to breathe. He has also disclosed nanny was laying on the stairs, [which] the defendant had bashed her head against repeatedly.”

Defense Ricky Elmore said his client did not mean to kill his mother and just wanted gas money.

“John came at him the wrong way,” Elmore reportedly said during closing arguments. “His flight-or-fight clicked in and he started assaulting John.”

But no matter his state of mind, prosecutors argued, there was no excuse to kill a woman whom he supposedly loved.

“If that is a momma’s boy that left his mom for dead that way, God help that mom,” prosecutor Melanie Shekita told the jury during her closing arguments.

A group of alleged hitmen got out of a vehicle and opened up fire at a hookah lounge in Birmingham, Alabama, and killed their intended target along with three other bystanders caught in the hail of bullets, according to police. In addition, 17 other people suffered bullet wounds in the mass shooting at the popular nightlife district, cops say.

The gunmen remain at large, Birmingham police Chief Scott Thurmond told reporters at a press conference Sunday morning. It happened around 11 p.m. Saturday outside Hush, a hookah and cigar lounge on Magnolia Avenue in Five Points South. Thurmond said the investigation is still in its early stages, but cops have been able to determine the shooting was targeted.

“We believe there was a hit, if you will, on that particular person, where someone was willing to pay money to have that person killed,’’ he said.

Police recovered over 100 shell casings from what Thurmond described as automatic firearms. Thurmond did not expand on the motive for the alleged hit, but said the shooters had been looking for their target who happened to be at the hookah lounge.

“It wasn’t the location, it was the person, so wherever the person was was where it was going to take place,’’ Thurmond said. “Wherever they can catch that individual. That’s just where they happened to catch them.”

After the shooting, the suspects drove away. Paramedics rushed the victims to various hospitals. Police did not give reporters updated conditions on the surviving victims. No names have been released.

“To the victims and their families, our heartfelt condolences go out to them,” said Thurmond. “That’s 21 people’s whose lives were forever changed. That’s 21 families who some were destroyed and some were forever altered.”

One of the survivors described the chaos in an interview with AL.com. Gabriel Eslami, 24, was waiting to get into the bar with some friends from high school when all of a sudden shots rang out.

“In my mind, when it first started happening, I thought they were just shooting at people in the front of the line, but they were shooting up the line,’’ he said.

“I look back and it’s just gun smoke and peoples bodies laid out on the pavement,’’ he said. “My car was parked out front and there was blood all over my car from other people.”

Eslami said a friend of his, who suffered a graze wound to the arm, rushed him to the hospital.

According to prosecutors, Michael Monroe Banks went on a shooting spree, killing one person and injuring two, after he wanted to start a relationship with one of the survivors — a 17-year-old girl. (Mug shot: Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office)

A man in Tampa, Florida, went on a shooting spree after two other adults discussed kicking him out of the home because he pursued a relationship with a teenage girl, according to prosecutors in documents viewed by Law&Crime.

Authorities cite the new allegations against Michael Monroe Banks, 42, as well as his criminal history as reasons to keep him held in jail without bond. A hearing on this is set for this Wednesday. He faces a count of murder in the first degree, two counts of attempted murder in the first degree, attempted murder in the first degree of a law enforcement officer, and felon in possession of a firearm.

According to documents, cops got 911 calls this past Wednesday at 12:42 a.m. regarding a shooting on the 10000 block of N. 23rd Street in Tampa.

One of the survivors, a 60-year-old woman, said that Banks shot her and her friend at the location. Officers arrived to find the woman and her 17-year-old granddaughter outside the home.

According to authorities, Banks encountered one of the officers and fired two shots at him from the backyard. He ended up surrendering, stepping out of the home, however, prosecutors said.

Investigators found a woman slain in the home, dead from an apparent gunshot to the head.

The grandmother said that she and the now-slain victim had been talking about kicking Banks out of the home because he, in the words of documents, “was pursuing a romantic relationship” with the teenager.

“Shortly afterwards Victim 2 [the grandmother] heard a gunshot, and turned to see Victim 1 fall to the floor while the defendant stood over her holding his gun,” documents state. “Victim 2 said that the defendant then shot at her, grazing her in the head, before she fled the residence.”

The teenager told officers she was in the shower when she heard gunshots.

“She tried to push the bathroom door to keep it closed, but the defendant shot through the door at approximately head level,” police stated. “As she tried to escape the residence the defendant shot her in the leg. During a post-Miranda interview the defendant admitted to writing a letter to Victim 3 insisting that she enter into a relationship with him and not date anyone else. He heard Victim 1 and Victim 2 talking about leaving with Victim 3. He described feeling betrayed and upset. He said that he went to his room and loaded his muzzle-loader revolver. The process includes measuring gunpowder before pouring it into each of the 6 cylinders, pressing projectiles into each cylinder, and seating percussion caps for each cylinder.”

Banks allegedly admitted to shooting Victim 1 in the head, shooting at the woman in an attempt to kill her by aiming at her head and upper torso and to shooting the teenager through the bathroom door.

He allegedly admitted to reloading, stepping out the back door.

“He heard police officers yelling commands at him and saw an Officer (Victim 4) in the front yard of his neighbor’s house through the chain link fence,” documents stated. “The defendant said that he shot at the Officer twice. Shortly afterwards he put his gun on the kitchen table and surrendered.”

According to prosecutors, Banks purchased the gun from a sporting goods website a year before, even though he was a convicted felon. He was sentenced to a year and a day in prison in 2007 for aggravated battery of a pregnant female, and then five years in 2010 for simple battery second or subsequent offense.
