Apartment complex on Clayton Avenue in Pittsburgh (WPXI).

A Pennsylvania man is behind bars for allegedly taking a clothes iron and burning 60% of his girlfriend’s body because he thought she was cheating on him.

Burton L. Byrd proceeded to hold the woman captive in their Pittsburgh appointment from Saturday to Tuesday, not allowing her to leave to seek medical attention, a probable cause arrest affidavit obtained by Law&Crime said. When he did release the alleged victim, he told her to make up a story about being assaulted near a Wendy’s and threatened to hurt her family if she spoke the truth, according to the affidavit.

More from Law&Crime: ‘Hanging down his face’: Man rips out stranger’s eyeball after victim asks ‘how are you doing’ while walking past him, police say

Pittsburgh cops responded to the hospital around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday about a report of a possible domestic violence situation. The woman told police she and Byrd were at their apartment on Saturday when he accused her of infidelity.

“He figured he would punish me,” she told cops.

Byrd allegedly forced the woman to strip naked and tied her hands together with shoelaces. He began beating her with a belt and punching her in the face, cops said. Officers noted the woman had bruising around her eye and broken blood vessels in her right eye, suggesting she had been struck several times in the face.

The victim alleged that Byrd then plugged in the iron and started tapping it on her body. After saying the iron “wasn’t hot enough,” he proceeded to wait until it heated up and then held it on various body parts while demanding to know if she had relations with another man, police said.

“And I kept on saying no, I didn’t cheat on him,”” the woman recounted, according to the affidavit. “So after about maybe six times of him hitting me with the iron, I just made up a story telling him that I cheated on him just to get him to stop.”

The torturous attack occurred over a period of four hours, according to the affidavit. After he stopped burning her, he tried treating her injuries with gauze, cops said. She insisted on going to a hospital, but he allegedly wouldn’t let her. After going to one hospital, she was transferred to a hospital with a burn unit, cops said. The victim is expected to be in the hospital for at least two weeks.

Byrd is facing a slew of charges including aggravated assault, kidnapping, witness intimidation and false imprisonment. It’s unclear if he has an attorney.

Inset: Chad Martin (Kalamazoo County Jail). Background: The grocery store where Martin found his son deceased in the backseat of the car (Google Maps).

A Michigan man who accidentally left his 3-year-old son to die inside of a hot car for several hours last summer may, in the end, avoid significant jail time altogether, a judge ruled this week.

In January, Chad Martin, 36, pleaded guilty to one count of leaving a child in a vehicle causing death.

On Thursday, the judge overseeing the case sentenced Martin to spend nine months in the Kalamazoo County Jail — with two favorable conditions. First, the sentence is delayed to start until February 2026. Second, the judge also scheduled a conference for December of this year that could lead to the sentence being jettisoned entirely.

Regardless of his time behind bars, however, the defendant was sentenced to three years of probation that began this week.

The incident occurred on Aug. 16, 2023, when Martin left home with his two children in tow. The defendant dropped his daughter off at her day care, but forgot about his son, he would later tell investigators. Instead, Martin drove straight to work where he stayed from roughly 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. before getting back in the car to go grocery shopping.

The boy was discovered, lifeless, outside of a Family Fare supermarket in Vicksburg — a small village located just a few miles south of Kalamazoo — when his father arrived at the store. In sum, the boy was strapped into his car seat in the back for about nine hours.

The outside temperature peaked at 84 degrees that day in western Michigan, but the inside temperature of the vehicle was likely closer to 120 degrees because of the rolled-up windows, police said.

More Law&Crime coverage: Mom whose 23-month-old daughter died in hot car with a 107 degree body temperature headed to prison

“The day that happened was the worst day of my life,” Martin said during the sentencing hearing, according to a courtroom report by Kalamazoo-based CBS affiliate WWMT. “I deserve whatever punishment I get.”

The Wolverine State, for its part, did not have an issue with the relatively lenient sentencing meted out to the father in this case.

“The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office conducted a very thorough investigation so that we could feel confident in saying that this truly was an accident,” Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting told Grand Rapids-based ABC affiliate WZZM. “And I think it’s also important that we recognize that the child’s mother was supportive of this outcome, that the defendant not be sentenced to prison because of this. And I think that those are important distinguishing factors.”

The father explained that his daughter, who is a bit older, walks herself into her own day care while the boy would need to be carried in, according to court documents obtained by WZZM. Martin also said he “never checks the backseat when he gets to work” and that the children “always sleep in the vehicle en route to daycare.”

“I guess I went straight to work,” Martin told investigators.

The boy’s mother also spoke at the sentencing hearing — explaining the turmoil caused by a loss she knows was accidental but avoidable and admitting that she struggled with what Martin’s sentence should be.

“You will never know the true depth of the pain you caused,” Samantha Brown haltingly said through tears, according to WWMT. “There is no justice for my son or daughter or for me.”

A group of young boys in Georgia, ages 12 to 15, are facing charges for allegedly dumping hot water on one of their “friends” in a sleepover prank gone wrong, according to police and the victim’s family.

“You got to be in shock to know your friends are capable of doing this to you,” the victim‘s aunt, Nachelle Austille, told local NBC and ABC affiliate WALB. “Like somebody you trusted. It’s just horrible. He never thought something like this would happen to him.”

Tiffany West, the victim’s mother, told the local station that her son, age 12, was at a sleepover at one of their neighbor’s apartments in Tifton — about 180 miles south of Atlanta — when his friends allegedly set upon him. It’s unclear when the sleepover occurred as West is choosing to keep certain details private.

She says hearing about what happened to her son, who suffered second-degree burns on most of his face, upset her deeply.

“I mean, I really can’t describe it now,” West said. “In that moment I was just mad, hurt, in shock. Everything, I was seeing red. I was just trying to hurry up and get him some help.”

Police have confirmed the details of the incident to WALB, saying three minors were charged and released to their families. It’s unclear what the charges are. West shared photos with WALB over the weekend of her son in recovery.

“He was transported to the burn center in Augusta,” she said of the aftermath. “He had to have surgery. Of course, he is out of surgery and is recovering at home, now. But it is going to take him 12-14 days to heal.”

West and the boy’s aunt both note how he’s kept quiet about what happened and his situation. “He just don’t have no emotions about it,” Austille said. “He’s numb. He’s numb about it.”

More from Law&Crime: Egging prank gone wrong left man dead in street from ‘lovers quarrel’ — now a teen will be serving decades and her friends won’t be far behind

WALB reports that the three boys who were charged for the incident are awaiting their first hearing, which is expected to take place sometime in the next month.

West on Facebook says people have been reaching out to her and showing “love” to her family and son, whom she described as a “warrior” in a Jan. 3 post.

“Words can’t describe how Thankful I am for each & every one of you!” West wrote. “It brings tears to my eyes to know that SO many people care for me & my son & we are not alone in this! I drop to my knees every day Thanking God that my baby is still here & he is going to be ok bc it could have been worse! … My son is a Warrior & he has been so Strong! … Every donation, gift, encouraging words & prayer put a SMILE on my son face! Again, God Bless you all!”

A Florida father will reportedly spend the next two decades behind bars after he and his wife left their 18-month-old daughter in a car in the middle of the Sunshine State’s scorching hot summer.

Joel Rondon, 34, pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter of a child in the death of his daughter last year and was sentenced Friday by Judge Jalal Harb, according to Tampa Fox affiliate WTVT. Joel Rondon tested positive for methamphetamine, marijuana, and alcohol, while his wife Jazmine Rondon tested positive for both marijuana and alcohol. They left the toddler overnight after returning home from a Fourth of July party.

Rondon reportedly said he felt “shattered and scarred” by his daughter’s death, with Harb having harsh words for him at the sentencing.

More from Law&Crime: ‘My daughter really is dead’: Distraught dad hammers mom’s ‘negligence’ after 3-year-old allegedly dies from 100-degree heat in SUV filled with empty alcohol bottles

“One of the most impressive facts of this case is that you decided to go back to the vehicle to retrieve your cigarettes, and you didn’t notice your child there,” the judge reportedly said. “This is not a question and you’re done talking. You failed that child then, and you continue to fail that child now.”

Jazmine Rondon, 34, also is charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child and is awaiting trial.

As Law&Crime previously reported, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release that the Rondon’s attended the celebration in Lakeland with their three children, ages 8 years, 6 years, and 18 months old. The family arrived home at about 3:00 a.m. on July 5th, 2023, after both parents had consumed alcohol and smoked marijuana during the course of the party, the release states.

Upon their return, Jazmine Rondon instructed her husband to bring the toddler inside while she took the other two children into their home. Joel Rondon said the car door they used to access the child’s car seat was opened at that time. He then brought a few things inside and went back out where he observed that all four doors of the car had been closed. Assuming his wife had retrieved their daughter, Joel Rondon got into bed with his wife and went to sleep.

“Neither husband nor wife asked each other if they had brought the victim inside,” the release states.

Joel Rondon awoke around 10 a.m. the following morning and spent approximately an hour preparing for work. At around 11 a.m., he asked one of the older children to “check on the baby” in the bedroom, per the release. However, the child informed Joel that the baby was not in the bedroom, prompting him to search the house.

Eventually, Rondon ventured outside and looked inside the car, which was parked in the driveway, fully exposed to the sun. Inside the vehicle, he discovered the unresponsive toddler, still strapped into her car seat. In a panic, he brought the child inside before eventually driving her to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center with Jazmine.

Despite efforts to revive the girl and lower her body temperature, the child could not be saved and was pronounced dead at about 2:42 p.m., according to police. At the time of her death, authorities said the child’s internal body temperature was recorded at 104.4 degrees Fahrenheit. Medical center staff promptly notified law enforcement, who assumed control of the investigation.

“Even though it was painfully evident that this child suffered an absolutely torturous death, Lakeland Regional still worked on the baby to try to save its life. But it in fact was deceased,” Sheriff Grady Judd said.

Judd added that the heat index on the day of the victim’s death was 105 degrees.

Later that evening, at approximately 7:00 p.m., both parents willingly submitted to drug screenings conducted by the Department of Children and Families.

“Seventeen hours after arriving home from the party, Jazmine tests positive for alcohol and marijuana. Joel tests positive for alcohol, marijuana, and methamphetamines,” Judd said. “Seventeen hours later — so you can imagine what kind of shape they were in when they arrived from this party and left this child harnessed in the baby seat.”

A subsequent autopsy revealed that the cause of the victim’s death was hyperthermia resulting from being left inside a car, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide. Joel and Jazmine were taken into custody in July 2023 and subsequently booked into the Polk County Jail.

George Vigil (Denver Police Department).

An argument about a bottle of hot sauce in Colorado elicited a fiery and ultimately fatal rage over the weekend that left one man dead and another behind bars, police in the Mile High State say.

George Vigil, 19, stands accused of one count of murder in the second degree, the Denver Police Department said in a relatively sparse press release issued on Monday afternoon.

Several aspects of the case are shrouded in mystery, but, in the end, someone the defendant knows was stabbed to death, according to an affidavit of probable cause obtained by Law&Crime.

The incident occurred at a residence on Federal Boulevard near Empower Field at Mile High Stadium, the home of the Denver Broncos football team in the National Football League. On Sunday evening, just before 5:22 p.m., 911 dispatchers received a call about the stabbing.

“Hello, I have someone stabbed,” a woman on the other end said.

“In the background of the call voices could be heard yelling,” the affidavit reads.

The woman told the dispatcher she was with “two gentlemen and a female, and one gentleman with a knife.” She described the injury as having impacted: “the gentleman on the left side of his ribs.”

“I just need somebody here right away,” the 911 caller continued — by now pleading for help. “We need an ambulance here right away. Right now. Right now. He’s bleeding to death, please.”

The dispatcher then asked: “Who did this to him.”

The woman replied with the defendant’s full name.

“George Vigil,” she said.

Responding officers assessed the scene while medical crews attended to the victim, according to the affidavit.

The victim was described as having “two separate sharp force injuries,” police wrote. The man suffered one stab wound to his left rib cage and another stab wound to his left back.

He was then rushed to the Denver Health Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 5:59 p.m.

In the heavily redacted court document, police suggest Vigil made an unprompted statement of some sort to police as he was being arrested — the entirety of that sentence, however, is censored.

“George VIGIL’s hands and clothing were stained with apparent fresh blood,” the law enforcement narrative picks up. “He had no visible open or bleeding injuries to his person. As officers took him into custody and were walking him to the vehicle, he asked for an attorney.”

A witness whose identity is also redacted in the affidavit told police that the victim has some sort of relationship with Vigil and earlier that same evening had “arrived to visit as he usually does more than one time per week” to “check on” something or someone there.

The witness then described the argument and resulting violence as explicitly about the location of a bottle of hot sauce.

“[The man] wanted to make a sandwich and asked where the hot sauce was,” the affidavit reads. “George VIGIL stated that the bottle was in his bedroom upstairs. An argument erupted between family members over the bottle of hot sauce, which resulted in both [redacted] and [redacted] physically separating [the man] and George VIGIL away from each other. [The man] verbally challenged George VIGIL to fight by making statements to the effect of ‘Let’s take this outside,’ and began approaching him again.”

When the man approached, the witness said, she saw the defendant “swing an arm,” police wrote — believing this to be one of the fatal blows. The witness told police Vigil “often carried a switchblade type knife in his front pants pocket.”

Then, the man “fell to the ground and began bleeding profusely,” prompting the 911 call, the affidavit notes.

Vigil first appeared in court on Monday and was ordered to be detained without bond. While police provided the defendant’s booking photo, he is not publicly listed on the Denver County Jail’s list of inmates. Other information about the case is also presently scarce.

One local member of law enforcement suggested the judge overseeing the prosecution sealed the case.

“When a case has been sealed in Colorado, and a request is made for the records, my office is required to respond that ‘no such records exist,”” a spokesperson for the Denver District Attorney’s Office told Law&Crime in an email.

A Kansas home day care provider is accused of burning her foster child in a hot bath and hitting him hard enough to cause bruising.

Ija Monae Hall, 29, faces a child abuse charge after the boy suffered second-degree burns last week, authorities said. She was arrested on Monday at the Child Advocacy Center, The Wichita Eagle reported.

The incident happened at Hall’s home day care, His Loving Hands Home Childcare, on Sept. 5, officials said.

Details about the case came out in a Kansas Department of Health and Environment Emergency Order of Suspension.

The document said that the child was taken that day to a hospital’s burn center with deep second-degree burns to lower extremities and superficial second-degree burns to his buttocks, thighs, genitalia and feet.

At the hospital, Hall allegedly provided medical staff and law enforcement with “inconsistent statements as to the cause of the injuries.”

The following day, Hall’s two kids were placed into police protective custody and taken to a children’s home.

There, the staff noted that both children needed baths. One child had missing teeth and bruising on his chest and legs, the document said. The other child had a small scratch on his face, red marks on his back, neck, shoulder and knee, and a small bruise on his heel, according to the document.

In a follow-up interview with police days later, Hall admitted to smacking one of them on the back, resulting in bruising and also admitted to making him sit in a hot bathtub, resulting in the burns, the document said.

The Kansas Department of Children and Families (DCF) requested an emergency order to suspend Hall’s license to operate a family child care home — issued in June. The license suspension was immediately granted due to the severity of the case, the document said.

Local CBS affiliate KWCH reported on Friday that she posted bond and was out of custody.

While attending a music festival in September 2021, Clark County, Nevada, Judge Erika Ballou posted on Instagram: “Life is STILL beautiful, despite the fact that Billie Eilish doesn’t START for 30 minutes and I have a 8:30 calendar tomorrow.” The hot tub photo of Ballou and the two public defenders can be viewed in the complaint.
A Las Vegas judge is facing ethics charges partly for a social media photo of herself sporting a bikini while in a hot tub with public defenders.

Clark County, Nevada, Judge Erika Ballou is facing a Jan. 24 misconduct complaint filed by the Nevada Commission on Judicial Discipline. The document cites the hot tub post as well as a second post complaining about an early court calendar.

The hot tub post used a slang word for breasts, while the second post used an expletive in a hashtag.

The New York Post, the Las Vegas Review-Journal, KLAS and Law & Crime have coverage.

The misconduct complaint has specifics on the social media posts:

  • In April 2022, Ballou posted on Facebook a photo of herself in a hot tub with two public defenders—one man and one woman. Referring to the male public defender, Ballou said he was “surrounded by great tits.”

  • While attending the Life is Beautiful music festival in September 2021, Ballou posted on Instagram: “Life is STILL beautiful, despite the fact that Billie Eilish doesn’t START for 30 minutes and I have a 8:30 calendar tomorrow.” The Instagram post carried the hashtag #VacateTheShitOuttaOutofCustodyCases.

Ballou apparently responded to the controversy last weekend in a Facebook post that quoted lyrics from rapper Cardi B, according to KLAS.

“Went from makin’ tuna sandwiches to makin’ the news,” Ballou posted. “I started speakin’ my mind and tripled my views.”

The misconduct complaint alleges that both posts violate ethics rules requiring judges to act in a way that promotes public confidence in the judiciary; requiring them to comply with the law, including the judicial ethics code; and providing that judges participating in extracurricular activities should not act in a way that appears to undermine their independence and integrity.

The hot tub post also violates ethics rules banning judges from conveying the impression that others are in a position to influence them, the ethics complaint alleges. And the Billie Eilish post also violates ethics rules requiring judicial duties to take precedence over personal activities, according to the complaint.

Ballou became a district judge in January 2021. She was previously criticized for telling a Black defendant accused of battery against a police officer that he should stay away from officers.

“You know you don’t want to be nowhere where cops are ’cause I know I don’t, and I’m a middle-aged, middle-class Black woman,” she said. “I don’t want to be around where the cops are because I don’t know if I’m going to walk away alive or not.”

Ballou had explained that she supports law enforcement, but she tries to communicate with defendants “in a manner that is straightforward and understandable.”

Ballou did not immediately respond to an ABA Journal voicemail and email seeking comment. She also did not reply to requests for comment from publications covering the ethics charges.

James Bond would have never been caught venturing into an off-limit area but the actor who played the fictional spy for years, Pierce Brosnan, wasn’t quite so slick, according to court records recently filed in Wyoming home of Yellowstone National Park.

In records obtained by Law&Crime from the U.S. District Court for the District of Wyoming, a citation was issued to Brosnan for “foot travel in a thermal area” at the park on Nov. 1.

The Irish-born Brosnan, 70, was also cited for a “closure violation” near Mammoth Terraces, The Messenger reported.

A review of the docket in Wyoming shows he is due in court next on Jan. 23, 2024, at 11 a.m. and his appearance is mandatory.

An attorney for Brosnan could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday.

In 2016, when a man was caught walking off a boardwalk in the same area he was fined $1,000 plus a $30 court processing fee, according to a statement from the National Parks Department.
