A grandmother in Georgia was allegedly killed by a stranger who followed her home and then choked her to death — crushing her neck with his knees and full body weight while she was lying on the ground, according to police and family members, who describe the murder as “horrific” and “mind-blowing.”

Hector David Sagastume Rivas, 21, is accused of murdering 52-year-old Camillia Williams sometime between 11 p.m. on March 12 and 1 a.m. on March 13, according to an arrest warrant obtained by Atlanta ABC affiliate WSB. Police in Cobb County say Sagastume Rivas strangled Williams and then dumped her body on the side of a road in a yard near her home in Marietta, where it was found last Thursday morning in a place that her family says left them shocked.

“When they found her in the bushes, we looked at the bushes real close and it just so happens to be a Camellia bush.” Camillia’s brother, Arsene Williams, told WSB. “It’s hard to believe that this is really truly happening,” he said. “I don’t know how to absorb it right now.”

According to Arsene and Williams’ family, the Louisiana native called a relative the night before her body was found and said she was being followed by a man who they claim was Sagastume Rivas.

“She didn’t know him,” said Tony Williams, another one of Camillia’s brothers. “The night before she was at the dollar store and she told one of my nieces the guy was following her,” Arsene alleged.

Cops say a motive has not been provided by the suspect yet, but he has admitted to allegedly killing Williams. He told investigators the details about using his knees, claiming he did so after trying to take her life with a chokehold, to no avail.

“I just can’t imagine what someone would have in their heart to do that to somebody,” Williams’ niece, Danielle Williams, told local NBC affiliate WXIA. “What he’d done was really horrific,” she said. “It’s mind-blowing.”

Sagastume Rivas was being held Wednesday on charges of felony murder. He’s been denied bond and is awaiting his next court date.

Inset: Henrietta Stone (Hawaii Police Dept.). Background: Kino’ole Street in Hilo, Hawaii where Stone lived at the time of her granddaughter’s death (Google Maps).

A 67-year-old grandmother in Hawaii will not be going to jail in connection with the death of her 9-year-old granddaughter, who weighed only 45 pounds when she starved in 2016 while in the woman’s care.

Hilo Circuit Court Judge Henry Nakamoto on Thursday ordered Henrietta Stone to serve a sentence of 10 years of probation over the death of young Shaelynn Lehano-Stone, authorities announced. Nakamoto handed down the sentence over the staunch objection of the Hawaii Office of the Prosecuting Attorney, who sought the maximum sentence of 20 years for Stone.

“There aren’t words to describe my disappointment and frustration in the outcome of this case. Shaelynn and our community deserved much better. Her death was caused by the three people, who she should have been able to trust the most,” Prosecuting Attorney Kelden Waltjen said in a statement released after the sentencing hearing. “We will not let this result discourage our ongoing efforts to protect our keiki.”

“Keiki” is a Hawaiian word that means “child.”

Stone in February 2024 pleaded no contest to one count of manslaughter for her role in Shaelynn’s death. She had originally been charged with one count of second-degree murder.

Shaelynn’s parents, Kevin Lehano and Tiffany K. Stone, also previously pleaded guilty to manslaughter and were sentenced to 10 years of probation, records show. Notably, the victim’s grandmother was her legal guardian at the time of her death.

Prosecutors also emphasized that several of Shaelynn’s teachers and the emergency medical personnel who first treated the victim submitted victim impact statements encouraging the court to sentence Stone to prison. A pre-sentence investigation report also called for the grandmother to serve the maximum sentence.

“Manslaughter carries a penalty of either a twenty-year prison term or ten years probation and up to two years in jail,” the prosecuting attorney’s office said in a news release. “Prosecutors argued for the maximum twenty-year prison penalty.”

Following her initial arrest in 2016, Stone remained in jail until July 2024 when she was released after posting bond of $100,000.

According to a release from the Hawaii Police Department, officers and firefighters on June 28, 2016, responded to a call about an unconscious child at Stone’s home on Kino’ole Street home in Hilo, Hawaii.

“First responders were confronted with what appeared to be a severely malnourished and unconscious young girl lying on the floor within the home,” police said. “She was transported to the Hilo Medical Center where she died a few hours later.”

The Associated Press reported that in the months leading up to Shaelynn’s death, her grandmother had removed her from Hilo Union Elementary so the child could be homeschooled. Additionally, authorities said Stone kept alarms on the refrigerator door to prevent access and noted that Shaelynn’s weight at the time of her death was the same she weighed when she was only 4 years old.

“The cause of death was listed as malnutrition with contributory causes being acute pneumonia and acute pyelonephritis (severe kidney infection),” prosecutors said. “She weighed 45 pounds and was 53 inches tall at the time of her death.”

Alan Aspinwall (Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Florida)

A grandson recently arrested on suspicion of carjacking his 77-year-old grandmother in the driveway outside the Florida home they shared wrote her a tearful apology, authorities said.

“Dear Grandma: First and foremost you are the most beloved person in the whole world coming from me and everyone else,” Alan Aspinwall allegedly wrote through tears, according to a handwritten letter published by FOX Orlando affiliate WOFL-TV. “I want to apologize for not being the young man you raised. … You are my everything. … I’m truly sorry for the negative events that’s been going on in my life, my mind has been so in the gutter. … Thank you for always forgiving me even if I’m wrong.”

“When I come home from prison, I promise I will be the great example of a loving father and loving grandson,” he allegedly continued. “Sometimes you have to hit rock bottom to understand and see.”

He was booked into the Lake County Jail on charges of unarmed carjacking, battery on a person 65 Years of age or older (domestic), and theft from a person 65 years of age or older, court documents said.

The drama happened at 10:15 p.m. on Feb. 6. Deputies responded to a home in Leesburg on a report of a battery and theft complaint, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by Law&Crime.

The victim, who was not identified in court documents, told authorities her grandson wanted her to unlock her car so he could get something out of the trunk, court documents said. She allegedly said that when she walked out to check that it was unlocked, he grabbed the key, which cut her hand. He then allegedly grabbed her left arm, and pushed her onto the driveway before getting into the car and driving off, court documents said. The victim suffered cuts to her hand and forearm.

“The victim stated that at no time did she grant permission for the defendant to take the vehicle,” the affidavit said. “The victim indicated an intent to prosecute.”

The following morning, police found the car, a red 2018 Toyota Corolla — but no key — in Leesburg, Florida. Aspinwall was arrested that afternoon.

In a recorded interview with police, he allegedly denied having any involvement in the theft of his grandmother’s car. He said he believed the victim was 67 years old and that he had lived with her for about 27 years. He said he walked to the Leesburg area from Okahumpka and didn’t travel in her vehicle, the affidavit said. He said multiple times he felt remorseful for what happened but “would not provide any information regarding the incident itself,” the affidavit said.

“The defendant continued to deny involvement; however, the defendant wrote a four page ‘apology letter’ to the victim,” the document said.

The key police found on him when he was taken into custody was for his vehicle, not for the victim’s vehicle, he said, according to the document.

“At this time it is unknown if the key is actually for the victim’s vehicle,” an investigator wrote in the affidavit.

In the letter, the suspect also allegedly gave his grandmother instructions, “Tell (my son) that his daddy was wrong. Tell him always respect his grandma.”

He’s expected to appear in court on March 4.
