A Pennsylvania man is behind bars for allegedly taking a clothes iron and burning 60% of his girlfriend’s body because he thought she was cheating on him.

Burton L. Byrd proceeded to hold the woman captive in their Pittsburgh appointment from Saturday to Tuesday, not allowing her to leave to seek medical attention, a probable cause arrest affidavit obtained by Law&Crime said. When he did release the alleged victim, he told her to make up a story about being assaulted near a Wendy’s and threatened to hurt her family if she spoke the truth, according to the affidavit.

More from Law&Crime: ‘Hanging down his face’: Man rips out stranger’s eyeball after victim asks ‘how are you doing’ while walking past him, police say

Pittsburgh cops responded to the hospital around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday about a report of a possible domestic violence situation. The woman told police she and Byrd were at their apartment on Saturday when he accused her of infidelity.

“He figured he would punish me,” she told cops.

Byrd allegedly forced the woman to strip naked and tied her hands together with shoelaces. He began beating her with a belt and punching her in the face, cops said. Officers noted the woman had bruising around her eye and broken blood vessels in her right eye, suggesting she had been struck several times in the face.

The victim alleged that Byrd then plugged in the iron and started tapping it on her body. After saying the iron “wasn’t hot enough,” he proceeded to wait until it heated up and then held it on various body parts while demanding to know if she had relations with another man, police said.

“And I kept on saying no, I didn’t cheat on him,”” the woman recounted, according to the affidavit. “So after about maybe six times of him hitting me with the iron, I just made up a story telling him that I cheated on him just to get him to stop.”

The torturous attack occurred over a period of four hours, according to the affidavit. After he stopped burning her, he tried treating her injuries with gauze, cops said. She insisted on going to a hospital, but he allegedly wouldn’t let her. After going to one hospital, she was transferred to a hospital with a burn unit, cops said. The victim is expected to be in the hospital for at least two weeks.

Byrd is facing a slew of charges including aggravated assault, kidnapping, witness intimidation and false imprisonment. It’s unclear if he has an attorney.

After a court tossed out the confession, a California man pleaded down from a murder charge to voluntary manslaughter for killing his then-girlfriend’s 1-year-old daughter. Derrick Dimone Woods, 47, was sentenced on Tuesday to 15 years and eight months in prison for killing Amanda Owens, 16 months, the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office announced.

He also pleaded guilty to physical child abuse for hurting and injuring Amanda’s 3-year-old brother, Elijah, and to false imprisonment by force or violence regarding both children.

“These were brutal and heinous crimes against vulnerable children, by a very disturbed man,” District Attorney Jeff Reisig said. “No amount of prison time will ever be enough in this case. We are heartbroken for the family.”

Prosecutors say that the siblings’ mother left them in Woods’ care at a motel in the city of West Sacramento on Feb. 15, 2021. She returned three hours later, only to find Woods running off into a getaway vehicle. He had left her children battered.

“Amanda was found on a bed inside the motel room, covered with a sheet, cold and not breathing,” prosecutors wrote. “Amanda’s face was swollen and covered in bruises. Elijah was sitting on a chair inside the room. Both his face and body were bruised, and he had red welts from being whipped with an electrical charging cord.”

Authorities found Woods the next day in nearby Sacramento. The defense argued he was incompetent to face trial due to an intellectual disability, and though the court restored him to competency, the judge also tossed his confession.

“In a pre-trial ruling, because of Woods’ intellectual disability and a prolonged delay between the arrest of Woods and the reading of Miranda warnings, Judge McAdam excluded Woods’ confession,” prosecutors wrote. “Despite the district attorney’s disagreement with the ruling, based on how the court interpreted the facts, a successful appeal was unlikely.”

The D.A.’s office highlighted statements from Amanda’s family at the sentencing.

“At yesterday’s sentencing hearing, multiple family members of Amanda and Elijah spoke to Judge McAdam,” prosecutors wrote. “They expressed their rage and devastation over the loss of Amanda and the injuries suffered by Elijah. The mother of the children told the court that the entire court experience has been incredibly traumatic, exhausting and emotionally draining. She stated, ‘Every life deserves to be valued and protected.””

A 22-year-old New Hampshire man stands accused of beating his girlfriend’s 23-month-old son to death when he was alone with the boy and she was grocery shopping.

Annthoni Bliss is charged with second-degree murder in the January 2024 death of Luca Hudson, the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office said in a statement. The Keene Police Department and medical personnel responded the morning of Jan. 14, 2024, to an apartment for a young child in medical distress. They arrived to find Luca unconscious and not breathing. Paramedics rushed him to the hospital where he died three days later, just a month shy of his second birthday.

More from Law&Crime: ‘Her voice was not heard’: 13-year-old girl allegedly murdered by father who went on TV to express concern when she was still considered missing

A year-plus long investigation led to charges being filed against Bliss, who had started dating Luca’s mother about a month prior to the incident after knowing each other for several years, a probable cause arrest affidavit said. The medical examiner determined the cause of death to be blunt force trauma to the head and the manner of death homicide.

Bliss and the boy’s mother denied doing anything to hurt Luca. Bliss had been staying at his girlfriend’s apartment along with Luca and the boy’s older brother, cops said. Detectives noted that Luca showed no signs of injury in the days leading up to his death.

Through interviews and reviewing surveillance footage, investigators believe the abuse happened the night before cops responded to the apartment when Luca’s mother made a nearly hour-long trip to the grocery store, according to the affidavit. In text messages between her and Bliss while she was out, the defendant made no mention that anything may have been amiss. He said Luca’s older brother had fallen asleep.

“How’s shopping baby,” Bliss allegedly texted her.

“going to check out now,” she responded.

“Okay my love,” Bliss texted.

Luca’s mother, who has not been charged with a crime, and Bliss initially did not tell cops that the suspect was alone with the boy. In December, he told cops that he was on the phone with his sister while his girlfriend was away, but detectives could find no evidence the two ever spoke, the affidavit said. While his sister at first said she was on the phone with Bliss, she stopped talking to law enforcement, cops said. Investigators also talked to a neighbor who lived next door who said he heard Luca crying for up to an hour around the time the boy’s mother was shopping, according to the affidavit.

After the mother returned from the store, she and Bliss spent time in their bedroom. He didn’t say anything about Luca being injured, cops said. A couple hours later, Bliss walked by Luca’s room and heard vomiting. Luca had thrown up in the crib and on his pajamas. After a shower, the boy stayed with his mother and Bliss in their bed where he complained of a headache, according to cops. His mother told cops he seemed fine otherwise.

But Bliss later said in an interview with detectives that Luca’s head felt “soft” and “squishy” to him after the shower. Investigators later found he made two internet searches around that time: “2 year old, head squishy” and “2 year old head head now swollen head squishy,” the affidavit said. Despite his concerns, he never called 911; his girlfriend did so a couple of hours later, per cops.

Doctors noted Luca showed little signs of external injury, however internally he suffered “substantial internal bleeding” on his brain, the affidavit stated. He also suffered from hemorrhaging in both of his eyes. His brain swelled which ultimately led to his death, doctors said. Medical examiners determined there was a “complete absence of any alternative accidental explanation,” the affidavit stated. They were able to whittle down the timing of the infliction of injury to when Bliss was alone with Luca when the mother was at the store.

Cops arrested Bliss on Wednesday evening. His next court date is scheduled for April 3. He remains at the Cheshire County Jail.

Luca’s obituary described the boy.

“Luca loved turtles, dogs, coloring and watching his favorite TV show, Mickey Mouse. He also enjoyed making a lot of noise, playing catch with balls and spending time playing with his brother,” the obituary said.

The “mangled up” body of a man killed by his girlfriend’s teenage son was discovered on a busy Louisiana bridge last week — leading to murder and accessory charges for his partner, her 17-year-old and the woman’s mom — after the family tried wrapping him in a blanket and dumping him over the side with a kettlebell, officials say.

Coshelia Conley, 36, of Baker, was trying to cover up her boyfriend Gerard Nicholas Richard’s death last Thursday after her son, Da’Sean Conley, shot and killed him while the two were arguing and fighting that night, according to their arrest affidavit, which was filed by the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office and obtained by local CBS and ABC affiliates WAFB and WBRZ, respectively.

Richard was found with trauma injuries near the center of the Huey P. Long Bridge in Jefferson Parish at around 7 p.m. after Conley and her son allegedly tried dumping his body over the side with her mother, Cathy Conley, 55, who is charged with principal to second-degree murder.

Police say surveillance footage from Coshelia Conley’s apartment shows the trio “removing a trash bag believed to contain bloodied clothing items” roughly 30 minutes before Richard’s body was discovered. Authorities went to the residence and allegedly found blood and bleach in the apartment and parking lot. A forensic examination showed that the place had been scrubbed down and cleaned, WBRZ reports.

A witness who spoke to cops said they saw two vehicles stopping at the top of the bridge to dump Richard’s body over and approached them. The cars dropped Richard in the roadway and sped off, causing his body to be run over multiple times by vehicles that were passing by, according to police. Blood smears on the bridge’s railing indicate that Coshelia Conley and her family allegedly tried dumping him over but were unsuccessful.

During their investigation, authorities learned that Da’Sean had been arguing with Richard last Thursday. Richard was allegedly “punched and beaten” by the teen before the fighting eventually spilled out of the apartment and into the parking lot. Police say the pair entered a Chevrolet Tahoe and witnesses then heard a “single gunshot” go off. The Conleys then proceeded to team up to destroy evidence and dump Richard’s body in a bid to cover up the murder, according to officials.

Richard’s body was described by investigators as “mangled up,” according to WBRZ.

Security footage allegedly shows the Tahoe that Richard was killed in traveling with a 2011 GMC 1500 pickup with a red gas can in the bed along a route near the Huey P. Long bridge. Coshelia Conley wound up driving the GMC truck to meet up with detectives to be questioned about the case, with investigators immediately noticing the gas can in the back, according to WAFB.

Coshelia Conley is facing a charge of being an accessory after the fact of second-degree murder and obstruction of justice, while Da’Sean Conley is charged with second-degree murder and obstruction of justice. Cathy Conley was booked for obstruction in addition to principal to second-degree murder.

A 32-year-old man in Texas was arrested for allegedly killing his girlfriend’s father in front of the girlfriend, fatally shooting the 43-year-old victim after the two got into an argument about paying a cover charge at a night club.

Franco X. Summers was taken into custody over the weekend and charged with one count of murder in the slaying of Christopher Paul Fuentes, records reviewed by Law&Crime show.

Officers with the San Antonio Police Department responded to reports of a shooting at 12:30 a.m. on Saturday near a taco restaurant in the 18000 block of Blanco Road, San Antonio CBS affiliate KENS reported. Once there, first responders found a man — later identified as Fuentes — suffering from what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A probable cause affidavit obtained by the San Antonio Express-News provided additional details about the circumstances of the shooting.

According to the report, the victim had just recently been released from prison and was at his 23-year-old daughter’s apartment, where she lived with Summers, whom she had been dating for about three years. The three were drinking at the apartment when they decided to head out and go to a bar.

When they arrived, Fuentes and his daughter reportedly did not want to pay a cover charge to get into the establishment. Their refusal allegedly caused Summers to start yelling and repeatedly stating that he had a gun — something the victim’s daughter already knew.

Fuentes and his daughter eventually got out of Summers’ car, which reportedly only further enraged him.

Summers began following the father-daughter duo around the parking lot, continuing to verbally berate them, San Antonio ABC affiliate KSAT reported. Surveillance footage obtained by investigators showed Fuentes reach into the driver’s side window of Summer’s car and grab the younger man’s arm.

A brief struggle ensued but ended when Summers reached into the car to grab a gun and reportedly shot Fuentes several times. During the struggle, MySanAntonio reported that Fuentes could be seen telling his daughter to run away from the car.

“Franco [Summers] looked me in my eye and then shot my father,” the victim’s daughter told KENS. “I keep seeing my father’s face once he realized that he was shot. I’m constantly replaying images in my head at night, I can’t sleep.”

On Sunday afternoon, authorities responded to a San Antonio home for a reported family disturbance and discovered that the individual involved was Summers. He was reportedly taken into custody on a warrant for Fuentes’ murder and three additional but unrelated warrants.

The alleged shooting is far from the first time Summers has been in trouble with the law. Records show that in 2013, he was charged with murder and aggravated assault for fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend’s brother. However, Summer’s reportedly claimed the shooting was in self-defense, and the charges were dismissed due to a lack of evidence.

Summers is currently being held in the Bexar County Jail. A judge on Sunday set his bond at $400,000, records show.

An 18-year-old man in Texas has been arrested and charged with a felony for allegedly helping his 17-year-old girlfriend kill herself by drowning in a local pond last year. Zander Tashman was taken into custody over the weekend and charged with one count of aiding the suicide of another individual, Ellyse Suarez, authorities announced.

According to a news release from the Frisco Police Department, officers on Nov. 20, 2023, responded to a call regarding “suspicious activity” at Frisco Commons Park, which is in the 8000 block of McKinney Road in Frisco, Texas. Frisco is about 30 miles north of Dallas.

Upon arriving at the scene, first responders said they found the body of a 17-year-old girl — later identified as Suarez — in the pond. She was pronounced dead on the scene in what appeared to be a suicide.

Suarez’s cause of death was ultimately determined to be drowning.

“After an exhaustive investigation, evidence collected in the case indicated that 18-year-old Zander Tashman of Frisco aided the deceased, his 17-year-old girlfriend, in committing suicide,” police wrote in the release. “Subsequently, Detectives obtained a warrant for his arrest, and Tashman was taken into custody on February 18, 2024.”

The charge of aiding in the suicide of another is a state jail felony punishable by a minimum of six months and a maximum of two years in a state correctional facility as well as a maximum fine of $10,000.

Police have not released any additional details about the investigation, nor have they explained what evidence led to the arrest of Tashman.

Suarez’s mother, Azucena Massey, spoke with Fort Worth NBC affiliate KXAS and said that while she too was in the dark with regard to the investigation into Tashman, the idea that he was being charged in her daughter’s suicide was disconcerting.

“It’s scary in a way because it makes me question, do I even want to know? Is it going to make me more angry? Because I don’t want to feel angry when I think about my daughter,” Massey told the station, adding that Tashman and her daughter had been dating on and off throughout high school.

Massey said her daughter’s relationship with Tashman was “very meaningful to her,” and something she wanted to “work out so dearly” that it may have led to her making irrational decisions. She also noted that her daughter struggled with depression.

Tashman and his family released a statement through their attorney, Reynie Tinajero, about the arrest, which they claim was not justified.

“Zander (Tashman) and his family wish this horrible tragedy had never taken place either. I’m sorry authorities made a poor and probably emotional choice to blame Zander (Tashman) and to do so in a public way,” the statement read. “We’ll be making our case in a court of law. Zander (Tashman) is an exemplary college student with no prior history of criminal behavior. Zander is innocent.”

This series of images shows a shooting in Tennessee that was captured on video. Jeffrey Scott West allegedly shot his girlfriend’s son Kyle W. Spitze in the ear during an altercation on Aug. 25 in Friendsville, Tennessee. Spitze suffered a graze wound to the ear. West was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. (Video posted to Billy Ragland/X account)

A shocking video showing a man shooting his girlfriend’s son in the ear is making the rounds on social media.

It shows the altercation from the view of the victim, Kyle W. Spitze, who was recording from his phone. The incident occurred around 8:15 p.m. Aug. 25 in Friendsville, Tennessee, about 20 miles southwest of Knoxville. Billy Ragland, a firearms instructor, posted the video on X, the website formerly known as Twitter, and it has amassed over 22 million views.

It begins with Spitze, 24, sitting on his bed in his bedroom when his mother’s boyfriend, Jeffrey Scott West, comes into the door frame and points a gun at him.

“I’m getting ready to blow his brains out right f—— now,” West, 68, exclaims.

A woman, Spitze’s mother and West’s girlfriend, intervenes. She pulls West away from the door.

“Blowing my brains out?” Spitze shouts somewhat sarcastically.

This causes West to return to the door and again point the gun at Spitze. The woman tells West to “stop it” and she again pulls him away and closes the door.

“Shoot me and I guarantee you you will go to jail for life,” Spitze said.

Spitze then gets up and walks out of his bedroom where his mother and West are standing a few feet away.

“Point that gun at me again,” Spitze said.

That’s when West fires, the flash of the muzzle visible on the video. Spitze spins around, and blood starts dripping to the floor from the bullet grazing his right ear. He then staggers to a door that leads to the patio with his mother screaming at West “Oh my God. You’re going to jail.” The video ends.

The Blount County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release it responded and met with Spitze and his mother outside. Paramedics tended to Spitze’s injury and transported him to the hospital. With West still in the house, the sheriff’s crisis negotiation and SWAT teams responded to try to coax him outside. They tried to speak with him through a loudspeaker and used diversionary devices in an attempt to get him into custody. About two hours later a police dog went into the home and found West dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A 50-year-old dentist and oral surgeon in Maryland will spend more than four decades behind bars for killing his 25-year-old girlfriend who fatally overdosed on addictive anesthesia medications administered through an at-home IV station the doctor had set up for her in the rental house they shared. State Circuit Court Judge Cheryl A. McCally on Wednesday ordered James Michael Ryan to serve a sentence of 45 years in a state correctional facility, authorities announced.

As previously reported by Law&Crime, a Montgomery County jury in August deliberated for less than three hours before finding Ryan guilty of one count of second-degree depraved heart murder and one count of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Sarah Harris. He was also convicted on charges of possession with the intent to distribute midazolam and distribution of ketamine and diazepam.

Ryan had been facing a maximum sentence of 55 years in prison before Wednesday’s sentencing hearing, however, the state sentencing guidelines had been calculated at between 10 to 25 years, the Washington Post reported. McCally reportedly said she decided to far exceed those guidelines due to Ryan’s significant contribution to Harris’ death — providing her with the drugs stolen from his practice — as well as his exploitation of a position of power over the former beauty queen who began working for him for several years before her death. Prosecutors said that he “often administered” the drugs to Harris himself.

During the sentencing hearing, McCally reportedly recounted “the march to Sarah’s death,” emphasizing text messages showed Ryan on at least one occasion administered ketamine to Harris while she was asleep.

According to court documents, Ryan said he went to bed at 10:30 p.m. on Jan. 25, 2020. He said the alleged victim was “okay when he went to bed,” However, when he went back downstairs on Jan. 26, 2022, he told police he found her “unresponsive on the couch with used hypodermic needles and various vials of controlled dangerous substances bottles nearby,” the court paperwork indicates.

Despite lifesaving measures from Montgomery County Fire Rescue, Harris died there, the press release stated.

Ryan was first arrested and charged in Harris’ death in March 2022.

Ryan and Harris first met when she visited his office for a medical procedure in the fall of 2020. During the procedure, Harris shared that she had experience working in a dental office. Ryan later contacted Harris about a job at his office. Harris accepted the offer and began working for him as a surgical technician.

In January 2021, Harris and Ryan began dating, with Harris spending “significant time” at Ryan’s home, authorities said. The two began living together permanently in the summer of 2021. Despite outspoken concerns from her family members, Harris’ relationship with Ryan continued up until her death from overdosing.

Authorities said an autopsy determined that her cause of death was ketamine and diazepam intoxication. Various vials of the drugs, hypodermic needles, syringes, and tourniquets were also found in the home.

According to text messages obtained by authorities, Harris asked Ryan to provide her with drugs from his medical practice. Ryan then told Harris how to use the drugs he provided. The two also discussed ways to make the effects of the drugs more potent and how to help Harris recover from the effects as quickly as possible.
