An Arizona mother who murdered her two kids, ages 7 and 9, using a meat cleaver “designed to cut the bones of animals” will die behind bars after being handed two consecutive life sentences on Friday for her heinous crimes.

Yui Inoue, 44, was sentenced by Maricopa County Superior Judge Jeffrey Rueter, according to AZFamily, and he didn’t mince words when speaking to her.

“Words can’t adequately describe what occurred,” Rueter said, per AZFamily.

“I can’t imagine what those children went through in their last minutes,” he told the court. “The fear, the pain, the suffering. It’s incomprehensible.”

Inoue, who spoke through a Japanese interpreter, said that she believed her children were not dead. She was given the two life sentences plus two 20-year sentences to be served consecutively.

“They are spending time with my parents,” Inoue reportedly said. “I love my children very much so it’s very strange. My children are with my parents.”

Inoue, who lived in Tempe, was accused of killing her two kids in a heinous 2021 murder case that wrapped up in February with her conviction.

“Mia and Kai Inoue were sleeping soundly in their beds when their own mother came into their bedroom holding a knife, a meat cleaver … and she attacked them with it,” prosecutors said during closing arguments, according to AZFamily. “She had to think. She had to act. And there’s nothing unclear or speculative about any of that.”

A Maricopa County jury found Inoue guilty of two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of child abuse in connection to a prior investigation by the Arizona Department of Child Safety and the May 2021 murders of her children Mia and Kai Inoue, who were identified by local officials.

Prosecutors say Inoue set upon her two children after claiming to hear “voices telling her to kill” them. She called 911 afterward and then went to flag down officers at a police substation on East Apache Boulevard near Arizona State University. The distraught mother was primarily speaking Japanese, police said, and she reportedly confessed to the officers on the spot about the slayings. Authorities went up to her apartment in response and found the mutilated bodies of Inoue’s kids.

“[S]he was hearing voices telling her to kill her children,” charging documents said.

Inoue later told police that she woke up with blood on her hands around 4:30 a.m. to find her children dead and also covered in blood near a doorway. After that, she said she took a bath and finally “woke up” to the reality of the violence she committed. Her lawyers claim Inoue had no memory of carrying out the killings. According to local ABC affiliate KNXV, Tempe police said a blood-soaked meat cleaver was discovered inside the vehicle Inoue drove to the police substation.

“We are here because this woman tried to decapitate two souls,” said Maricopa County prosecutor Shaylee Beasley during her closing arguments in February, according to the Arizona Republic.

Beasley described in detail how Inoue “delivered chop after chop” to the children while they both “tried to protect their heads.” She reportedly showed close-up photos of the children’s horrific injuries to the jury and claimed their deaths were connected to a bitter divorce she was having with their father.

Inoue’s attorney, Rebecca Felmly, had previously said that she believed there was enough reasonable doubt presented at Inoue’s trial for the jury to deliver a verdict of not guilty. During her first court appearance in 2021, Inoue told the judge “I did not kill anybody” through her interpreter.

“(The medical examiner) likened the amount of force to a guillotine,” Felmly said, according to AZFamily. “She is a very tiny, very slightly-built woman. She doesn’t have the energy, the power, or the strength to cause that type of injury to those kids.”

The child abuse case that Inoue was convicted of stemmed from a report made by Inoue’s husband in March 2021 — just months before the killings — saying Inoue “took Kai” and their whereabouts were unknown. “Police eventually located Ms. Inoue and Kai behind a convenience store,” DCS officials said in a May 2021 statement. “Ms. Inoue was taken to a psychiatric hospital and Kai was returned to his father.”

DCS investigators said they did not observe any “visible signs of abuse or neglect on the children” and the kids claimed “they felt safe with their parents.” The investigation did not find any evidence to warrant removal from the home, according to DCS officials.

Vaughn Smith, who was 35 years old at the time of the shooting, sobbed in court during his sentencing hearing. Almost a full year after the May 2024 altercation between Smith and his girlfriend, whose name was being kept private, Smith stood before a judge as he pleaded guilty to assault with intent to commit murder and two firearms charges. In addition to his admitting to the crime, his girlfriend also asked for leniency.

But ultimately, it was up to the judge.

According to reporting by local ABC affiliate WZZM, Smith and his then-34-year-old girlfriend had been arguing for several days. The series of verbal altercations culminated in an admission by the girlfriend that he was not the father of one of the children they shared.

On the night of May 23, 2024, Smith shot his girlfriend twice — once in the head and once in the leg — and was tackled by her 16-year-old son, who then stabbed him while defending his mother. A neighbor witnessed the incident and called 911.

While the girlfriend was being interviewed at the hospital, she reportedly told police that Smith threatened “to blow her brains out.”

The girlfriend eventually recovered, and Smith was booked into the Ottawa County Jail.

On April 18, Smith entered a plea of guilty and sobbed while expressing deep remorse. He told Judge Jon H. Hulsing and the court, “I made a terrible decision that day, a terrible decision that day, your honor. And it came from me being hurt just hearing my daughter wasn’t mine. That hurt me so bad, and other infidelities that we’ve been sweeping under the rug. We both need counseling, your honor. We both need counseling.”

Smith’s girlfriend also stood up for him, telling Hulsing, “Please show some mercy for a man who was learning to be a better person, a father and a businessman.”

While Hulsing said that he believed Smith was genuine in his remorse, saying that “obviously carries some weight.” But given the nature of the crime, Hulsing imposed a stiff sentence — nearly 30 years in prison with a maximum of 75 years, with credit for time served.

A mixed martial artist in Florida is heading to prison for murdering his fiancee while he was “super high on Molly” — telling an acquaintance, “I killed her, bro” — after gunning the woman down at their apartment while arguing over the MMA fighter’s drug use.

“I killed her high,” Phillip Keller told the acquaintance during a recorded phone conversation, according to Brevard County prosecutors and the local CBS affiliate WKMG. “I did it. I don’t know how I did it, but I can’t live with myself knowing that,” Keller said. “I’m a piece of s—.”

Keller, who was 39 when the killing unfolded, was sentenced Monday to 50 years behind bars for the 2021 shooting death of Alicia Campitelli, who was a popular piercing artist on Merritt Island known as “Red.” Keller accepted a plea deal during his sentencing hearing to reduce his charge to second-degree murder after originally being charged with first-degree murder in 2021, WKMG reports.

According to reports, Keller was a professional MMA fighter with a 2-6 record when the shooting occurred. He competed multiple times for Titan FC between August 2019 to September 2020, MMA Junkie reports.

Keller and Campitelli were reportedly arguing over his drug use when he gunned her down “in cold blood” while high on the drug known as Molly, according to police, which is a stimulant and hallucinogen also referred to as ecstasy or MDMA.

“Deputies responded to an apartment on Schoolhouse Lane at approximately 11:15 a.m. Saturday after a call was received advising that the resident, 35-year-old Alicia Campitelli of Merritt Island appeared to be deceased,” the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release. “Upon arrival, deputies located Campitelli inside the residence where she was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

Keller was the one who called the police and reported Campitelli’s death, but he didn’t reveal that he was the one behind it until later.
“I need help immediately, it looks like she’s dead,” Keller told a 911 dispatcher, according to WKMG. “Oh my God. It looks like she’s been shot and been robbed, my house has been robbed.”

Keller was taken into custody after the shooting and questioned by detectives, who were able to get a confession out of him. The pro fighter admitted to getting into an argument on May 14, 2021, with Campitelli about his drug use before he went to get a gun from their bedroom and shot her with it. Prosecutors said Monday that Keller loaded three bullets into the pistol’s magazine and then hid the weapon before eventually using it to kill Keller.

During his confession, Keller said Campitelli tried to duck down and crawl away as he fired once and missed her. “Oh God no,” Campitelli screamed, according to Keller, as he opened fire two more times and struck her. Keller said he used the woman’s car and debit card to make ATM withdrawals after her death — totaling $1,481.50 — so he could purchase more drugs.

“Our hearts are so broken every day,” Campitelli’s mother, Debra Moore, said at Monday’s sentencing, according to Florida Today. “We still hear her laugh at our family gatherings.
Under the terms of his plea deal, Keller will be eligible for parole after he serves at least 25 years of his sentence. Campitelli’s father, Phil Campitelli, blamed Keller’s addiction to drugs as one of the main reasons his daughter is dead today.

“Keller has no remorse,” Phil Campitelli said. “My daughter is dead because she tried to help Keller from himself.”

Inset: Shamika Mitchell (Volusia County Division of Corrections). Background: Daytona Beach, Florida, where Shamika Mitchell abandoned her 1-year-old son (WRAL/YouTube).

A mother from Michigan has learned her fate for abandoning her 1-year-old son on Florida‘s Daytona Beach. The boy’s teenage brother reportedly called the cops on her on the day in question — claiming she was “possessed by demons.”

Shamika Mitchell, 38, was sentenced Thursday to 15 years in prison for her son’s abandonment. She was found guilty in November 2024 of aggravated child abuse and unlawful desertion of a child.

Florida’s Seventh Judicial Circuit Judge Karen Foxman said Mitchell had been using marijuana, drinking alcohol and possibly using meth while caring for the child, who was in the surf and could have drowned if he had not been rescued, the Daytona Beach News-Journal reported.

The newspaper reported her public defender saying the defendant struggled through a difficult childhood and had a psychotic episode at the time of the incident.

The case came to light on Nov. 8, 2023. Mitchell was seen on surveillance video walking onto Daytona Beach with her 1-year-old son just before midnight. She returned alone five minutes later.

Her teen son called 911, Law&Crime previously reported.

“She sent my little brother somewhere,” the teen told authorities, according to local NBC affiliate WESH. “She said with his dad. I keep telling her to show me proof, proof, but she’s not showing me proof. … So, like, I really think my mom is possessed by demons.”

“I’m telling her to tell me proof because I know that he’s been having these little episodes lately,” the teen added to the dispatcher.

It is unclear what caused the “episodes,” according to WESH.

A stranger wound up finding Mitchell’s son, and just in the nick of time, police said.

“She told Daytona Beach Police that he was in the water on his hands and knees,” police said in the incident report. “Hands buried in the sand up to his wrists and waves were crashing over his head.”

Authorities reported that the boy was unresponsive and had shallow breathing when found by first responders, in addition to an elevated pulse. He was rushed to Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and later made a full recovery.

WJBK reported in December 2023 that Mitchell’s five children — then ages 1 to 17 — were placed in the foster care system by Florida’s Department of Children and Families after her arrest. Their grandmother, Valerie Mitchell, told the outlet she traveled to the Sunshine State to try and get them out, but was unable to at first.

“I’ve called everybody and I need some help,” Valerie Mitchell said. “My grandsons want to come home.”

On Dec. 19, 2023, the children were sent home with a case manager and placed in Valerie Mitchell’s custody. She said it was a Christmas that she’ll never forget.

“I am so happy, I just don’t know what to do,” Valerie Mitchell told the Detroit Free Press after her grandchildren arrived. “I’m just happy they’re home.”

A man who helped his son hide the bodies of four murder victims in a Wisconsin cornfield after the younger man “snapped” has learned his fate.

Darren Osborne, 59, was sentenced Thursday to 16 years in prison, online court records show. He was found guilty in October of four counts of hiding a corpse involving the deaths of Jasmine Sturm, 30; her brother, Matthew Pettus, 26; her boyfriend, Loyace Foreman III, 35; and her friend, Nitosha Flug-Presley, 30.

His son, Antoine Suggs, 41, shot and killed the victims after a night of drinking in St. Paul, Minnesota, in September 2021. Citing surveillance footage and phone data, investigators indicate that Suggs killed the victims around Seventh Street in St. Paul between 3:30 a.m. and 3:48 a.m. on Sept. 12.

Video showed Flug-Presley slumped over in the front passenger seat, authorities said.

Suggs reached out to his father after the shooting for help with hiding the bodies. He “told his father that he snapped and shot a couple of people,” says a criminal complaint obtained by Law&Crime.

“Suggs told his father the shooting happened in the vehicle on Seventh Street,” said the Ramsey County criminal complaint. “Suggs’ father gave his son a ride to Minnesota from Wisconsin after they left the Mercedes-Benz in a cornfield. Suggs’ father denied knowing the bodies of the people his son shot were in the vehicle they abandoned. He dropped Suggs off in Minneapolis.”

Suggs surrendered to police in Arizona, where he had been living. He was ultimately convicted and sentenced to 103 years in prison in 2023.

Osborne had been sentenced to nearly five years in prison in 2022 for helping his son and will serve the Minnesota sentence and the Wisconsin sentence concurrently, The Associated Press reported.

An Oklahoma man was sentenced for killing his girlfriend’s grandparents and burying their bodies in their own backyard.

Lucas Anthony Walker, 22, was sentenced to 35 years in federal prison for the murders of Deborah and Larry Dutton, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced in a Friday press release. Walker pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder.

The victims were murdered in their home in Dewey, about 50 miles north of Tulsa, on Dec. 19, 2022.

Their bodies were found the following month in their backyard, reported Andy Dossett of the Bartlesville Examiner-Enterprise.

Ring doorbell video showed Walker and Heidi Dutton dragging the bodies to the backyard, reported local NBC affiliate KSNW, citing court documents.

Walker’s then-girlfriend, Heidi Dutton, who was 17 at the time, told police she asked Walker to murder the couple, who adopted her as their daughter, “because she wanted them dead,” Dossett reported, citing police affidavits and preliminary hearing testimony.

“We kill them,” Heidi Dutton said she told her boyfriend during an interview with police, the newspaper reported.

More Law&Crime coverage: Man asked mom to ‘Give me a hug, because I am going to jail’ after shooting sister in face because he didn’t ‘approve of her lifestyle’: Police

She initially admitted to investigators that she killed her grandparents and that Walker helped her clean up, but later reversed her and Walker’s roles.

Walker confessed to shooting and stabbing Deborah Dutton and stabbing Larry Dutton to death, officials said.

The two reportedly spent the elder Duttons’ money before their arrests.

An obituary said Larry Dutton was a retired Master Staff Sgt. in the U.S. Air Force and former manager of the Lt. William M. Milliken Airport in Eureka, Kansas.

His wife was originally from Tennessee, a retired Staff Sgt. in the U.S. Air Force, and a former chef.

They were former churchgoers in Kansas. Congregants at their former church, Eureka United Methodist, were shocked.

“They’re shaken. They’re visibly shaken,” Rev. Linda Pope told KOKI. “How do we make sense of all of this, and how do we turn this over to a higher power? There, there’s just so many unanswered questions.”

Heidi Dutton’s plea and sentencing hearing is set for March 5, online court records show.

An Arkansas football coach and his wife who were busted in an online child sex abuse sting operation after trying to meet with an extremely young child for sex have learned how they will spend the next decade and beyond: behind bars.

As Law&Crime previously reported, Benjamin Coney, 30, and Emily “Grace” Brinley, 26, were accused of one count each of internet stalking of a minor and conspiracy to commit rape, according to court documents obtained by Law&Crime. Coney had once worked as a minor league football coach in Little Rock — until the “To Catch a Predator”-like sting operation.

Federal authorities have announced that they have been sentenced to a combined 378 months in prison without the possibility of parole. Coney was sentenced to more than 17 years — 210 months — behind bars, followed by 25 years of supervision, and Brinley was sentenced to 14 years in prison, followed by 15 years of supervision. They were sentenced Thursday by U.S. District Judge Timothy Brooks, a Barack Obama appointee.

According to local CBS affiliate KFSM, Coney and Brinley aren’t done with criminal proceedings: they are also facing state charges.

According to court records, Coney faces charges of conspiracy to commit rape, internet stalking of a child, and 30 counts of distributing, possessing, or viewing child sex abuse material, KFSM reported. His next hearing is set for Tuesday. Brinley, meanwhile, faces charges of conspiracy to commit rape and internet stalking of a child, and her next hearing is set for Feb. 6, 2025.

According to redacted affidavits of probable cause filed in Benton County, the investigation began on Nov. 19, 2023, after an undercover detective received a direct message on an unidentified social media platform from someone with the username “centralsfinest.” Law enforcement allege the username belongs to both Coney and Brinley.

“I’m into some very f—-d-up, sick taboos,” one of those alleged messages reads. “Do you have any [redacted]?”

To which the detective is said to have replied: “I do … Watch yourself … you’ll get banned on here.”

Then, the couple allegedly suggested the conversation continue on an encrypted messaging service. On Nov. 27, 2023, the messaging continued, encrypted, and the couple allegedly explained they preferred a certain “age range” and identified an unknown number as “the perfect age,” according to the affidavit. The probable cause documents go on to reference additional messages that include increasingly graphic and detailed child sexual abuse.

The affidavits also allege that Coney and Brinley provided verification photographs of themselves as requested by the undercover officer — including one photograph with Brinley exposing one of her breasts, which the detective wrote, was not requested.

The couple was nabbed by law enforcement after agreeing to meet with the undercover detective.

In separate interviews, the husband and wife allegedly admitted to varying degrees of culpability.

According to the affidavit, Coney confessed that investigators “would located child sexual abuse material on his devices.” The male defendant allegedly suggested that while “he could talk a big game on the phone, he did not think he would actually do anything in real life” and repeatedly said he changed his mind. When pressed by the detective about specific alleged comments regarding the children he believed to be at the location, Coney allegedly replied that his wife wouldn’t have done anything without him.

Brinley allegedly confirmed her role was secondary.

“Grace stated that she was just trying to be a good wife, and that she was not interested in children,” the affidavits read. “Grace said that she went along with Ben and repeated stuff she heard Ben say.”

The female defendant went on to say that she just wanted to make her husband happy and suggested she was uncomfortable with how “sketchy” the meeting was.

As for Coney’s time as a football coach, that’s all over now.

“We are aware of the situation involving Ben Coney and have terminated his employment with the team,” the Punishers wrote in a post on X following his arrest in December 2023. “We do not support or allow his actions at all.”

A man from Washington, D.C., has learned his fate in the shooting death of a 13-year-old boy killed outside the shooter’s home in 2023.

Jason Lewis, 42, was sentenced to 12½ years in prison on Friday for the killing of Karon Blake, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced in a press release. Lewis was convicted in August of voluntary manslaughter, assault with a dangerous weapon, and firearm charges.

Lewis, a father of a young daughter and former city government employee at the Department of Parks and Recreation, apologized in a letter sent to the judge.

“Everything I’ve committed myself to in reference to giving young people opportunities to grow, learn and progress has felt in vain,” he wrote, local NBC affiliate WRC reported. “I wrecked so much that night.”

The shooting happened before dawn on Jan. 7, 2023, in the 1000 block of Quincy Street, NE, in Washington D.C. Police responded to the location for the report of a shooting at 3:56 a.m. The victim was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Lewis said he was in bed when he heard a noise. He got his gun, described by police as a black Smith and Wesson M&P .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol, and checked outside, police said.

“Lewis observed the decedent by a white vehicle (Kia Soul) parked on the north side of the street,” police wrote. “Lewis reported he yelled, ‘Hey’ to the decedent, and the decedent ran straight (‘bee-lined’) toward him in a full sprint to the front of his gate.”

Lewis told police he fired only twice, though officers said they found three bullet casings. They determined he fired twice at Blake and once at the Kia.

After Lewis fired his weapon, Karon yelled, “I’m a kid. I’m a kid,” and collapsed, Law&Crime reported, citing the affidavit.

At his trial, Lewis testified it was self-defense.

“I saw a pistol inside the car, the driver’s seat. I saw a flash and heard a bang. I fired. I thought it was a gun. I thought I was being shot at. In my peripheral vision, I saw someone charging at me. I saw a person. I feared for my safety. I feared for my life. I fired two shots,” he said.

The victim’s mother, Londen Blake, spoke out after her son’s death.

“He took my baby, my firstborn,” she said.

Inset: Jonathon Matthew Cheek (Macomb County Jail). Background: The home where Cheek’s toddler starved to death (WJBK).

A 26-year-old man in Michigan will spend decades behind bars for killing his 2-year-old son last year, starving the boy to death inside the home they shared with the child’s mother. Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Edward Servitto on Wednesday ordered Jonathan Matthew Cheek to serve a sentence of 24 to 50 years in a state correctional facility in connection with the toddler’s horrific death, authorities announced.

Cheek in October reached a deal with prosecutors in which he agreed to plead no contest to one count of second-degree murder and one count of second-degree child abuse. In exchange for his plea, prosecutors agreed to recommend a maximum five-decade sentence for Cheek, who had been facing the possibility of life in prison.

Servitto also sentenced Cheek to up to 10 years on the child abuse charge, to be served concurrent with the murder sentence, meaning at the same time. Cheek was given credit for 643 days of time served.

“This is a heartbreaking and profoundly sad case,” Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido said in a statement following the sentencing hearing. “A two-year-old child, full of potential and deserving of love and care, was failed in the most devastating way. No sentence can bring back this innocent life, but hopefully the family can begin to heal.”

The victim’s mother, 28-year-old Sierra Pearl Zaitona, is facing the same pair of charges as Cheek. Her trial is currently scheduled to begin on April 1, 2025.

Sierra Pearl Zaitona (Macomb County Jail).

As previously reported by Law&Crime, Cheek and Zaitona on Thursday, March 16, 2023, called 911 and reported finding their toddler son dead in his crib. A subsequent autopsy performed by the Office of the Medical Examiner determined that the victim’s cause of death was starvation, prosecutors said.

During legal proceedings following the parents’ arrests, prosecutors said the victim was the biological son of Cheek and Zaitona and that he was in good health before being placed back in their custody.

“For the record, the child was healthy in foster care, and once it got into the care of these two individuals, it met its demise,” Macomb County Assistant Prosecutor Molly Zappitell said at an arraignment, the Macomb Daily reported.

It is unclear why the child was previously in foster care or when he was returned to Zaitona and Cheek.

When seeking to have the couple held on high bonds, prosecutors argued that Zaitona was a flight risk and said that she intentionally gave birth to the child in Ohio “to avoid alerting CPS.”

Zaitona is currently scheduled to appear in court for a pretrial hearing on March 17, 2025.

Before being sentenced, Jackson was found guilty of first-degree murder, attempted murder and discharging a firearm into a vehicle, inflicting serious injury.

Shirley’s mother, Kristi Lee, described her mixed emotions to the outcome to local NBC affiliate WRAL.

“I felt a lot of relief,” Lee said. “It’s not closure. You don’t get closure when you have to bury your child and see the gruesome things that we saw.”

“It has actually decimated my world,” she added. “I still say goodnight to an empty bedroom. I text his cellphone. The dogs still go into his room looking for him every day.”

Alex Shirley’s father, Ron Shirley, the host of the reality TV show “Lizard Lick Towing,” told WRAL what he learned after the outcome of his son’s murder case.

“If I leave this courthouse and this trial with anything else, I want people to know that you have to learn to forgive no matter what, and you have to learn to love no matter how hard,” he said.

The bloodshed happened on Feb. 17, 2022. Jackson and a co-defendant, both identified as members of the Nine Trey Bloods gang, walked up to a car in Garner, just south of Raleigh, North Carolina, and unleashed a hail of 20 bullets into the vehicle that Shirley and Hagy were in. Shirley died at the scene. Hagy was left paralyzed from the waist down. A third person in the vehicle suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Shirley and Hagy were shot while attending a memorial service to support the loss of a peer who was killed in a car crash, her GoFundMe page said.

WRAL reported that in addition to Jackson, three others were charged in the shooting, while a fifth was being sought. A call from Law&Crime to prosecutors seeking an update on the status of the defendants was not immediately returned.

Hagy was described on her GoFundMe page as beautiful and kind, with her entire life ahead of her.

“Sophie is now paralyzed following a shooting that took place while she was attending a memorial service,” the page said. “As she innocently attended the balloon release to support the loss of another peer who had been killed tragically in a car accident, Sophie was shot twice in her back.”

“As expected, Sophie is in shock, overwhelmed by emotion, and is having a difficult time processing what has happened,” the site added.
