The acting U.S. attorney in Washington, D.C., formerly helped ghostwrite posts criticizing a judge presiding in a civil case in which he was the defendant, according to lawsuit documents cited by ProPublica.

U.S. attorney nominee Edward R. Martin Jr. helped his associate, Priscilla Gray, write the posts that began in 2016 after the Illinois judge “dealt Martin a major setback in the case,” according to the report by ProPublica, noted by Bloomberg Law’s Wake Up Call. Martin is filling the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia position on an acting basis.

Gray’s posts on the judge’s Facebook page called the judge a “politician” with the “lowest rating for a judge in Illinois.”

Martin had urged Gray to call the judge’s actions “unfair and rigged over and over,” according to ProPublica. He also urged Gray to privately message the judge, the article reports.

The judge was presiding in a case seeking to oust Martin from association with a grassroots group that he once headed, the Eagle Forum. The plaintiff was Anne Schlafly Cori, an Eagle Forum board member who was the daughter of the group’s founder, Phyllis Schlafly.

The truth about Martin’s involvement in the criticism “emerged as Cori’s lawyers gathered evidence for her lawsuit,” according to ProPublica.

President Donald Trump has nominated Martin, who has no prosecution experience, to remain in the U.S. attorney position. Martin did not respond to ProPublica’s requests for comment. Gray also declined to comment to the publication.

Andy Schlafly, a former Eagle Forum board member who supported Martin, told ProPublica that Gray “speaks for herself” and had every right to express her outrage. He also said no court has ever sanctioned Martin for his “First Amendment advocacy.”

Background: Mark Bent at his sentencing hearing on Monday, Feb. 10, 2023 (East Idaho News). Inset: Nikolas Bird (Flamm Funeral Home).

An Idaho man was sentenced this week to a minimum of 45 years and a maximum of life in prison for murdering a man he says bullied him on Facebook — shooting him 17 times in the street outside the victim’s home — over “rumors” that the killer was an undercover cop.

Mark Bent, 43, was found guilty in December of first-degree murder and felony enhancement for the use of a deadly weapon in the commission of a felony for the September 2023 killing of Nikolas Bird, 23, outside his home in Bonneville County, according to East Idaho News. Bent, who was sentenced Monday, took to Facebook after the fatal shooting to explain why he took Bird’s life, saying it stemmed from online bullying related to his occupation. Bird’s family has denied the bullying accusation and says there’s no evidence to support it.

“I am saddened to say that I have committed some serious crimes today that will put me in jail for the rest of my life or lead to death,” Bent wrote after the shooting, according to prosecutors and East Idaho News. “As some of you know, shortly after I moved to Idaho Falls, I was slandered on Facebook with rumors of me being an Undercover Police Officer. Those rumors were followed by threats, harassment and more slander. Even after the facts were out that I am not a Police Officer of any kind, people still chose to believe it and continue to harass, threaten me and eventually look up where I live and work and post it on the internet.”

Bent was found guilty in December following a week-long jury trial, with prosecutors saying he planned the killing months in advance after being allegedly targeted on Facebook. He claimed during the trial that he blacked out during the shooting.

“This all started from me being involved with a local Facebook group called East Idaho Speedhunters and a car club called The Castaways,” Bent claimed on Facebook. “After being involved with The Castaways for a short time and seeing that they were involved with a lot of illegal activities, I departed from them. Because of that, the rumor of me being an Undercover Police Officer began and even though it seemed to pass, the rumor eventually came back to light.”

More from Law&Crime: ‘Fed up’ brother kills ‘bullying’ sister and shoots parents, claiming family ‘gangs up on him’ for being broke and unemployed: Police

According to Bent, people kept posting about him on the Speedhunters page “in a negative way” to the point where he started to think about “attacking on one of the car meets/shows they attend,” East Idaho News reports.

“But my main goal was to kill Nik Bird, the founder of the Castaways that started all of this by spreading rumors,” Bent said. “He also posted where I work. So I told myself that if anything were to happen to my job, I will go after him. Unfortunately for him and his friends, I lost my job recently, so I followed said plans.”

At his sentencing hearing Monday, Bonneville County Prosecutor Randy Neal repeated the word “bang” 17 times to symbolize the amount of times Bird was shot. Bird’s parents gave impact statements during the proceeding, which were reported by East Idaho News. Bent could be seen crying at times.

“Nikolas loved with every fiber of his being,” said Bird’s mother, Tara Withers. “You knew you were loved when you were loved by Nik Bird.”

Describing Bent, Withers said: “Mark took any future Nik would’ve ever had. He will never know what it’s like to be married or to buy his first home. Mark took this away in the most brutal way possible. Mark laid in wait for over an hour to kill Nikolas.”

Bird’s father, Todd Bird, said each day is a “relentless reminder of what we’ve lost” since losing Bent last year.

“Nik’s laughter, his infectious smile, and the warmth of his presence,” Bird said. “And now, I find myself navigating life in a work that feels dark. Daily life is overshadowed by his absence. The joy that was once in our lives has been replaced by all-consuming sadness and longing for my son.”

A deputy prosecutor in Indiana has been fired for voicing her disdain with Donald Trump voters on social media — writing on Facebook after the election that they “disgust” her and “clearly don’t respect” human beings — in addition to sharing posts about them being Nazis, according to her boss.

“If you voted for Trump, please unfriend me,” wrote Jordan Stroh, former deputy prosecuting attorney for the Hancock County District Attorney’s Office, in a Facebook post cited by District Attorney Brent Eaton this week in her termination letter, which was obtained by local CBS affiliate WTTV and local Fox affiliate WXIN.

“You disgust me and clearly don’t respect me or other human beings,” she added.

A post that Stroh shared from the Relegalize Indiana PAC’s Facebook page was said to have contained a quote attributed to novelist and essayist A.R. Moxon, author of the book “Very Fine People.”

Deputy Hancock County Prosecutor Jordan Oulette Stroh was fired from her job due to her social media activity post-election.

“[The post] in context, seemed to clearly be referring to the election and voters who supported the now President-Elect,” Eaton noted in Stroh’s Nov. 12 termination letter, adding that the post was shared “with the clear intent to communicate a belief that those who voted for the now President-Elect were NAZIS in the same manner as those who were members of one of the twentieth centuries most homicidal, anti-semitic, genocidal death cults.”

Speaking to the Indianapolis Star while on her honeymoon, Stroh claimed her posts were in reference to people in her personal life, not individuals she meets and works with as a deputy prosecutor. She believes she shouldn’t have been fired by Eaton.

“Prior to this current election, my opinions remained the same,” Stroh said by text. “At no point did my personal opinions prevent me from being fair and impartial in the execution of my duties. This especially rings true whenever my opinions were posted to my private Facebook page with no public ties to the Prosecutor’s Office.”

Eaton told Stroh in his letter that as a prosecutor, she should have known better, regardless of how she felt.

“You are charged with being a minister of justice,” he said. “Unfortunately, the decisions you made to post content to your social media page call into question your ability to be a fair and impartial minister of justice equitably, to all that you serve in this community. They have irreparably tarnished the credibility and trust people have in HCPO. Therefore, your employment with HCPO is terminated.”

Eaton told Stroh that he probed her Facebook page and found her posts to be “problematic” after receiving “multiple complaints” from people, including county staffers.

“HCPO can only be successful if we have public trust,” Eaton said. “Public trust is very difficult to acquire and very easy to lose. It is my expectation that all people who enter our office or interact with our team firmly believe that the decisions we make daily are based upon an unbiased and common-sense reading of the law and interpretation of the facts. It is critical that all people firmly know that, no matter their political preferences, HCPO will always interact and serve them with respect.”

Eaton told the Indy Star on Wednesday that members of Hancock County’s law enforcement community were mainly upset about Stroh’s Nazi post, explaining that he sees their point.

“How many times can you refer to large swaths of people as Nazis?” Eaton said. “I think the answer zero. The answer should be zero.”

Attempts to reach Stroh for comment on Thursday were unsuccessful.

Derek Bogenschutz (Miami County and Jay County).

A now-former Indiana sheriff’s deputy was recently arrested after pretending to be a woman on Facebook in order to harass a schoolteacher he once dated, law enforcement in the Hoosier State says.

Derek Joseph Bogenschutz, 36, stands accused of one count of felony identity deception, according to the Indiana State Police.

The defendant previously worked as a deputy with the Jay County Sheriff’s Office — and also as a part-time resource officer at the elementary school where the woman taught.

It is unclear when, exactly, Bogenschutz stopped working for the sheriff’s office.

The investigation began in February, after the Union City Police Department received a complaint from the teacher, according to the Star Press, citing a press release issued by state troopers.

At the time, she thought a woman named “Katie Morgan” was harassing her and her boyfriend — a Union City police officer.

But the “Katie Morgan” in question did not really exist.

Bogenschutz was allegedly the person posting under that fake profile, state troopers say. Using the feminine nom de plume, the onetime deputy allegedly messaged the teacher and claimed her boyfriend was “playing” both of them, according to court records cited by Fort Wayne-based ABC, NBC, and MyNetworkTV affiliate WPTA.

More Law&Crime coverage: ‘Best friend’ sentenced for murdering teenager at behest of catfisher who pretended to be millionaire

The deception is alleged to have gone a bit further.

Bogenschutz also sent the teacher screenshots of conversations purporting to show “Katie Morgan” and the teacher’s boyfriend arguing about other women, authorities allege.

It is unclear whether or not those fake lover’s quarrels were actual conversations, but, investigators say, Bogenschutz eventually did contact the teacher’s boyfriend as well.

The boyfriend himself also reported the harassment — and told a colleague who also happened to be a Jay County sheriff’s deputy, according to Fort Wayne-based Fox affiliate WFFT.

More Law&Crime coverage: Vigilante allegedly pretended to be a minor online and lured child pornography convict into fatal ambush

The other Jay County deputy’s memory was jogged, state troopers said. He recalled that Bogenschutz had once created a fake Facebook profile — for job-related purposes — while he was a sergeant working with the Indiana Crimes Against Children Task Force.

That case work profile’s name, presumably meant to help catch child predators, was “Katie Morgan,” authorities said.

Bogenschutz’s old task force colleague still had access to the work-related fake Facebook account, state troopers said. After his suspicions were sufficiently roused, he checked the message history and allegedly found several messages sent to the teacher and her boyfriend.

Bogenshutz was reprimanded by Jay County in 2019 with five days of unpaid leave and a 30-day suspension of take-home car privileges after a citizen filmed him speeding and a tense interaction ensued, according to Indianapolis-based ABC affiliate WRTV.

The defendant was arrested for the current charge on Wednesday morning in Miami County. He was expected to be extradited back to Jay County soon thereafter, authorities said. According to state jail records, Bogenschutz was granted “general release” just before Thursday afternoon.

Law&Crime reached out to the Indiana State Police and Jay County Sheriff’s Office for additional details on this story but no responses were immediately forthcoming at the time of publication.

William McClish preparing to attack Orlando police officers in a video he streamed on Facebook Live and mug shot (Orlando Police Dept.)

A 29-year-old man in Florida who last year turned down a plea deal that would have sent him to prison for five years may now spend the remainder of his life locked up for brutally ambushing two police officers in an attack that he streamed live on Facebook.

Orange County Circuit Court Judge Keven B. Weiss on Tuesday ordered William McClish to serve a sentence of life in prison after being convicted on charges of attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer with great bodily harm, among others, authorities announced.

In a news release, prosecutors with the Orange-Osceola State Attorney’s Office said jurors took less than an hour to find McClish guilty on all charges following a two-day trial.

Acting as his own defense attorney, McClish tried to convince jurors that he had been set up, keeping his opening remarks to a single sentence.

“I didn’t do it and the evidence was tampered with,” was all he said, according to the state attorney’s office.

According to an affidavit of probable cause, the unprovoked attack took place at about 12:30 a.m. on Sept. 25, 2021.

Uniformed officers Michael Zambito and Stephen Hurt with the Orlando Police Department were standing outside their patrol vehicle at North Magnolia and East Washington Street when Zambito spotted McClish, who appeared to be setting up a cellphone to record a video of the officers.

Shortly thereafter, McClish struck Hurt in the back of the head with a brick and then started punching Hurt as he fell to the ground. Zambito intervened, lifting McCliup from behind. But McClish bit Zambito’s bicep, then “slipped his head out of Zambito’s grip and began gouging Zambito’s left eye with his fingers. When the officer managed to “stop the defendant from gouging his eye out,” McClish bit the middle finger on the officer’s left hand, the affidavit states.

As McClish and the officer continued to struggle, McClish grabbed the officer’s radio hand mic, pulling it off his shoulder to prevent him from calling for help.

Additional officers who were already en route arrived a short while later and they were able to subdue McClish and take him into custody.

Prosecutors said they later learned that McClish had positioned his phone against a trash can, trained it on the two officers and streamed the attack on Facebook Live. Just before beginning the recording, McClish filmed and posted another video in which he speaks to the camera, saying, “I’m gonna kill him on Live.” Prosecutors said that video established that McClish intended to kill the officers.

Additionally, while incarcerated, McClish “boasted about his attempt to take the officer’s firearm during the assault,” prosecutors said.

According to a report from Orlando ABC affiliate WFTV, prosecutors under then-State Attorney for the Ninth Circuit Monique Worrell offered McClish a deal in 2023 in which he would serve only five years by pleading guilty to a lesser charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer. However, McClish reportedly rejected the deal in August 2023.

When the state attorney was removed from office and replaced, new prosecutors said there was no explanation for why a deal was ever offered to McClish. Earlier this year, McClish attempted to have the deal brought back to the table but was denied.
