SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Bureau of Land Management is hosting five events to quickly fill more than 100 vital wildland firefighter and various supporting positions throughout the state for the 2025 fire year. Applicants are encouraged to attend one of the in-person events but may apply online in advance.

During the events, staff will be on-site to review resumes, process applications, conduct interviews, and potentially make job offers.

“To meet BLM California’s wildland fire-related challenges, we are recruiting applicants who are committed to managing fire in the most effective and efficient ways possible,” said State Fire Management Officer Peter Kelly. “Please consider the BLM for a rewarding career in wildland fire management and apply and visit with us during these hiring events.”

The BLM will be hiring wildland firefighters for engines, hotshots, handcrews, helitack and various supporting positions. A summary of these types of positions is available on the National Interagency Fire Center’s wildland fire job page.

Which law firms scored highest in summer associate surveys? And which had memorable events?

The law firm with a No. 1 ranking by summer associates is either Dentons or Paul Hastings, according to surveys by Law.com and Law360 Pulse.

There was just one overlap in the top 10 rankings: Morgan, Lewis & Bockius was ranked third in both surveys. In fairness, however, the two rankings measured different criteria.

Summer associates were well-compensated, with average weekly pay of $4,543, according to the Law.com report on the American Lawyer survey. Associates also valued access to meaningful work and mentorship in their positions—even more than fun outings offered by the firms. Those kinds of positive experiences were also reported by associates responding to the Law360 Pulse survey.

But summer associates told of many memorable events. Summer associates responding to the American Lawyer’s survey reported parties on a yacht and in the Hamptons (Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton), an exclusive outing at the Central Park Zoo (Cravath, Swaine & Moore), an exclusive visit to the Museum of Modern Art (Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison), a trip to see Hamilton in orchestra seats (Simpson Thacher & Bartlett), visits to the Tony Awards and the NBA draft (Proskauer Rose), and tickets to a Dallas Mavericks game in conference finals (Weil, Gotshal & Manges). The Law360 Pulse survey also mentioned a trip to Disneyland.

There were also events with a personal touch, including a visit to see a partner’s cover band and a party at a partner’s home, according to Law.com. An event with an Olympics theme included baguette fencing and legal textbook shot put.

The American Lawyer’s survey of 3,077 associates at 71 firms asked associates to rate their satisfaction on a five-point scale.

Law360 Pulse’s survey had responses from 583 summer associates. The publication ranked firms based on four program areas: confidence-building, networking and mentorship, compensation and fun programming. Firms without five respondents weren’t included.

SUSANVILLE, Calif. – The Bureau of Land Management and Lassen Land and Trails Trust are inviting outdoor enthusiasts to help with Lassen County cleanup and improvement projects in recognition of National Public Lands Day and Susanville Hometown Pride on Saturday, Sept. 28.  Projects will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at the historic Susanville Railroad Depot and along the Bizz Johnson Trail.

Volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. at the Depot, 601 Richmond Road, and form into project teams to pick up litter and perform other light tasks.  Lunch will be provided for those who register.  Registration information is also available from the Lassen Land and Trails Trust at 530-257-3252.  The BLM will provide gloves, tools and water.   

National Public Lands Day is coordinated by the National Environmental Education Foundation.  Since 1994, NPLD has mobilized volunteers on the fourth Saturday in September to celebrate and care for something we all share, our nation’s public lands. 

In the past decade alone, over a million volunteers have donated almost five million hours of their time, worth an estimated $133 million, to improve public lands.  These efforts are crucial to preserving our natural resources for future generations to enjoy.

BISHOP, Calif. — The Bureau of Land Management is hosting two Artists-in-Residence events in the Alabama Hills National Scenic Area, near Lone Pine, California. Artists Alyssa Marquez and Kristen Freeborn will spend a week in the Alabama Hills creating art inspired by the spectacular scenery. At the end of their residencies, they will each host a public event to showcase their work and inspire visitors to create artwork. The events are hosted in partnership with the Eastern Sierra Interpretive Association, Alabama Hills Stewardship Group, and the Inyo National Forest.

“We are hosting the Artist-in-Residence program for a second year in the Alabama Hills.” said BLM Bishop Field Manager Sherri Lisius. “I am excited to see how the artists are inspired by the Hills and how their artwork can help encourage others to take care of this special place.”

Alyssa Marquez, an artist based in the eastern Sierra, creates paintings and colorful images with a focus on the scientific aspect of nature. Alyssa will be hosting an Observation and Art Walk from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 7, in the Alabama Hills. Participants of all ages are welcome to accompany Alyssa as she guides them to create a piece of artwork inspired by the Alabama Hills. Kristen Freeborn, from Bakersfield, California, focuses on western themed artwork. Kristen will be hosting a viewing of her western themed paintings at the Eastern Sierra Visitor Center, located at the junction of US395 and State Route 136 in Lone Pine, CA from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 14th. Kristen also invites those wanting to learn new skills in acrylic painting to join her that day at the visitor center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a workshop.
