A Florida couple is behind bars after they allegedly lured a teenage girl they met online to their home, tortured and suffocated her to death over a piece of missing jewelry, and dismembered her body before disposing of her remains in a dumpster.

Steven Gress, 35, and his girlfriend Michell Brandes, 37, stand accused of first-degree murder and kidnapping in the death of 16-year-old Miranda Corsette. The St. Petersburg Police Department said in a press release Friday that Gress picked up the girl on Feb. 14 after meeting her on a dating app and took her to his home in the 2700 block of 27th Ave. N. After hanging out that day, he drove her back to her home. Miranda returned to his home the next day, but this time she would not make it out alive.

More from Law&Crime: ‘F— you, he is not going to bite me’: Boyfriend ‘jealous’ of 5-year-old getting ‘too much attention’ beat him to death for being ‘disrespectful,’ police say

St. Petersburg police Chief Anthony Holloway told reporters at a press conference that there was a dispute over some missing jewelry on Feb. 20. Gress and Brandes allegedly assaulted and tortured Miranda for the next week.

“Repeatedly beat the victim, while holding her captive for seven days and eventually suffocating her by wrapping plastic wrap around her face,” a judge said during Gress’ first appearance, according to local NBC affiliate WFLA.

Gress and Brandes then put the teen’s body in his car and drove the remains some 15 miles to a home in the 12000 block of Mallory Drive in Largo. There, police believe she was dismembered. Her remains were once again moved, this time to a dumpster about 55 miles away across Tampa Bay. Cops have located the dumpster, however the remains were disposed into a Hillsborough County landfill. Cops are continuing to search for Miranda’s body.

Miranda’s grandmother, who had custody of her after both of her parents died, reported her missing to Gulfport police on Feb. 24. Gulfport police commander and acting chief Mary Farrand said her department is “very familiar” with Miranda, who is a “frequent runaway” with a history of mental health issues and drug abuse. She also was the mother of a 11-month-old child. Her grandma told police Miranda was known to run away and she’d usually return home, but not this time.

On Thursday, a “witness” contacted police regarding information about a kidnapping and homicide. Police realized they already had Gress in custody after he allegedly pointed a harpoon at Brandes and was in possession of drugs. Detectives quickly unfurled the horrific case. Brandes turned herself into cops on Saturday.

Gress was quite chatty during his first appearance.

After the judge read the allegations against him, he reportedly told the court, “They just said I suffocated,” before a public defender quickly intervened and ordered him to “not say anymore!”

Gress also questioned the court about the whereabouts of Brandes.

“Where is Michelle Brandes at?” Gress asked twice, video from local Fox affiliate WTVT showed.

“Talk to your lawyer,” the judge sternly advised Gress before ending the hearing.

Both Gress and Brandes are being held at the Pinellas County Jail without bond.

From left to right/ Leilani Simon and Quinton Simon (District Attorney’s Office), and Simon in court (Law&Crime)

The trial of a 24-year-old woman in Georgia accused of killing her 20-month-old son and tossing his body in a dumpster began on Monday with prosecutors telling jurors that in the days leading up to the toddler’s death, the victim’s mother had been having relationship issues, taking a spate of narcotic drugs, and later told police a bizarre array of stories.

At one point during an interview with police, Simon explained that she stopped at a secluded dumpster in the middle of the night shortly after her son’s disappearance because she was throwing away “spoiled shrimp pasta.”

As previously reported, Leilani Simon in December 2022 was indicted on 19 criminal counts, including malice murder, felony murder, concealing the death of another, and making false statements to police in the slaying of young Quinton Simon. Authorities allege that Simon on Oct. 5, 2022, intentionally killed her son with an unknown object “that when used offensively against a person did result in serious bodily injury,” and “cause Quinton’s death.”

The felony murder charges stem from accusations that Simon killed Quinton while also committing felonious acts of aggravated assault and first-degree cruelty to a child by “maliciously” causing Quinton “cruel and excessive physical pain” in a manner that was unknown to the grand jury at the time of the indictment.

In an opening statement that lasted nearly two hours, Savannah, Georgia, Special Assistant District Attorney Tim Dean highlighted Simon’s explanation for being at the remote Azalea Mobile Home Plaza dumpster just after 1 a.m. on the morning her son was reported missing.

“The evidence will show that she did not want to admit that [what she threw away] was Quinton’s body, so she describes this trash that she threw away as stinky shrimp pasta,” Dean said.

Prosecutors then played a tape of the police interview from Oct. 12, 2022.

“Yeah, I did throw away trash,” Simon tells the detective. “There was spoiled food smelling in my car so when I pulled around and seen that (dumpster), yeah, I stopped and threw the trash away. It was spoiled. Spoiled like shrimp pasta. The whole car smelled like shrimp. I was like, what is that smell? I looked, and I threw it away. I didn’t think anything of it to be honest, it’s just old food.”

She added that she simply saw “the opportunity” and threw away the trash.

Prosecutors said that Simon was actually disposing of her son’s body, which they say was eventually recovered “in pieces.”

“She throws Quinton’s body away like a piece of trash about 1:17 in the morning,’ Dean told jurors. ‘The defendant violated that most basic, sacred trust of a parent in the most horrible way. In the middle of the night, she killed him, her own son, got in her car with his body, drove to a dumpster, then threw him away like a piece of trash.”

In the indictment, authorities alleged that after killing her son, Simon repeatedly lied to local and federal investigators searching for Quinton.

She “admitted that she had left her home in the late night hours of October 4, 2022 to meet her drug dealer, falsely stating that the purpose of this meeting was to pay for an existing drug debt,” the document states. According to prosecutors, Simon falsely claimed that in the early morning hours of Oct. 5, 2022, she left her home to “meet her friend ‘Misty’ to obtain Orajel’ when she actually traveled to dump her son’s body.

The indictment states that Simon repeated the allegedly false claims about her whereabouts and actions on the morning of Oct. 5, 2022, in several subsequent interviews with investigators. Then, on Oct. 31, 2022, she allegedly claimed that it was not her, but her boyfriend, Daniel Youngkin, who left the house on the morning of Oct. 5, 2022.

However, on Nov. 21, 2022, the same day she was arrested, Simon allegedly admitted that she did leave her house on the morning of Oct. 5, 2022, and traveled to the Azalea Mobile Home Plaza but falsely told investigators that “she did not remember what she had done there,” per the indictment.

Human remains were discovered in the landfill on Nov. 18, 2022. The FBI subsequently confirmed that the remains were Quinton on Nov. 28.

Fred Jason Edwards murdered Esperanza Chavez, police said. (Images: Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake)

A man shot his girlfriend in his pickup truck and then tried to put her body in a dumpster, but after a couple of attempts he quit, left her next to the dumpster, and drove to a psychiatric hospital to admit himself, according to cops in the city of Millcreek, Utah.

Officers said that the incident is the “culmination of an elongated violent domestic violence history” between the defendant, Fred Jason Edwards, 46, and victim, Esperanza Chavez, 25.

According to a press release obtained by Law&Crime, officers received a call Saturday at 6:20 a.m. regarding a body found near a dumpster at 3994 South 300 West. They found Chavez dead at the scene.

“Detectives initiated their investigation, canvassing the area for surveillance footage,” they wrote. “A business in the vicinity provided crucial footage showing a black truck arriving at 12:28 am today. The male figure was observed pulling a body from the vehicle. Attempts were made to dispose of the body in the dumpster, however the suspect left the scene, leaving the victim beside the dumpster.”

Using footage, officers got the license plate number and learned that Edwards owned the vehicle, police said.

“Preliminary findings suggest the incident occurred within the vehicle belonging to Mr. Edwards,” they wrote.

Police were able to locate Edwards at the University of Utah hospital “where he was attempting to be evaluated,” police wrote. “Mr. Edwards is currently in custody and will be booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on the charge of Murder.”

In an interview after his Miranda warning, Edwards allegedly denied being involved in Chavez’s death and denied discarding the body, according to documents obtained by Gephardt Daily. He allegedly denied involvement even after cops confronted him with the existence of the surveillance footage.

Edwards allegedly belonged to the King Mafia Disciple gang, and his criminal history included “many assaults, mayhem, resisting arrest, threats, retaliation against a witness and escape from custody.”

One prior incident was from September 2020, when an ex-girlfriend entered a 7-Eleven in West Valley City, according to documents obtained by Salt Lake City CBS affiliate KUTV. Suffering from a bloodied mouth, she yelled to call 911 because Edwards was about to kill her. He had allegedly punched and dragged her by her hair to make her enter a vehicle.

“[Edwards] told [the victim] to call her mother because it was the last time she was going to speak to her,” the probable cause statement reportedly said. “[The victim] feared for her life and jumped out of the moving vehicle.

He also allegedly threatened his mother by messaging her that he would chop her in half if she contacted his probation officer.

From cops:

Sophia Simmons (Phoenix Police Dept.)

A 38-year-old mother in Arizona has been arrested for allegedly killing her young daughter, whose body was found stuffed in a plastic tote bag that had been discarded in a dumpster on Christmas Eve. Sophia Simmons was taken into custody on Monday and charged with one count each of first-degree murder, child abuse, and tampering with evidence, authorities announced.

According to a news release from the Phoenix Police Department, officers at about 8 p.m. on Sunday responded to the area of 31st Avenue and Thomas Road in regards to a body being found in a dumpster behind a local business. Upon arriving at the scene, first responders said they quickly discovered the body of a young “school-aged” girl inside the dumpster.

One day later, a tipster called police and indicated that the mother of the young girl — whom the caller identified as Simmons — was the individual responsible for inflicting the fatal injuries on the little girl and then placing her body in the dumpster.

Court documents obtained by Phoenix CBS affiliate KTVK provided additional details about the crimes with which authorities have charged Simmons.

According to the report, investigators with the Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner removed the body of a child believed to be between age 5 and 7 from the dumpster. The victim appeared to have suffered from a spate of different injuries to her torso, arms, and legs. The injuries were reportedly in different stages of healing, with some being very recent, which authorities said was a clear sign of ongoing physical abuse.

The individual who contacted police on Monday was in New York and had spoken to Simmons within the last day, KTVK reported. Simmons allegedly told the caller that she had been beating the victim when she realized that “it went too far.” Simmons reportedly told the caller that she then left the house and when she returned, her daughter was unresponsive and not breathing.

Simmons allegedly told the caller that she attempted to perform CPR on her daughter, but was unsuccessful at resuscitating the victim. When she realized she would not be able to revive the girl, Simmons allegedly said that she left her daughter’s body in the house for about five days and then brought it to the dumpster to dispose of it.

Police obtained a search warrant for Simmons’ home where they reportedly found evidence indicating that someone had tried to clean up a crime scene, including an outdoor garden hose that had been snaked through the front door, multiple inside areas with standing water, and a couch with no couch cushions. Simmons was not at the house at the time of the search, KTVK reported.

A warrant was obtained for Simmons’ cellphone data which reportedly showed that in the early morning hours of Dec. 24, she was in the area of the dumpster where her daughter was later found.

She was apprehended while driving in the direction of California, police said.

During her initial appearance in court, prosecutors said Simmons had previously been convicted on one count of malicious punishment of a child in Minnesota, per KTVK.

She is currently being held without bond.
