An Arizona mother who murdered her two kids, ages 7 and 9, using a meat cleaver “designed to cut the bones of animals” will die behind bars after being handed two consecutive life sentences on Friday for her heinous crimes.

Yui Inoue, 44, was sentenced by Maricopa County Superior Judge Jeffrey Rueter, according to AZFamily, and he didn’t mince words when speaking to her.

“Words can’t adequately describe what occurred,” Rueter said, per AZFamily.

“I can’t imagine what those children went through in their last minutes,” he told the court. “The fear, the pain, the suffering. It’s incomprehensible.”

Inoue, who spoke through a Japanese interpreter, said that she believed her children were not dead. She was given the two life sentences plus two 20-year sentences to be served consecutively.

“They are spending time with my parents,” Inoue reportedly said. “I love my children very much so it’s very strange. My children are with my parents.”

Inoue, who lived in Tempe, was accused of killing her two kids in a heinous 2021 murder case that wrapped up in February with her conviction.

“Mia and Kai Inoue were sleeping soundly in their beds when their own mother came into their bedroom holding a knife, a meat cleaver … and she attacked them with it,” prosecutors said during closing arguments, according to AZFamily. “She had to think. She had to act. And there’s nothing unclear or speculative about any of that.”

A Maricopa County jury found Inoue guilty of two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of child abuse in connection to a prior investigation by the Arizona Department of Child Safety and the May 2021 murders of her children Mia and Kai Inoue, who were identified by local officials.

Prosecutors say Inoue set upon her two children after claiming to hear “voices telling her to kill” them. She called 911 afterward and then went to flag down officers at a police substation on East Apache Boulevard near Arizona State University. The distraught mother was primarily speaking Japanese, police said, and she reportedly confessed to the officers on the spot about the slayings. Authorities went up to her apartment in response and found the mutilated bodies of Inoue’s kids.

“[S]he was hearing voices telling her to kill her children,” charging documents said.

Inoue later told police that she woke up with blood on her hands around 4:30 a.m. to find her children dead and also covered in blood near a doorway. After that, she said she took a bath and finally “woke up” to the reality of the violence she committed. Her lawyers claim Inoue had no memory of carrying out the killings. According to local ABC affiliate KNXV, Tempe police said a blood-soaked meat cleaver was discovered inside the vehicle Inoue drove to the police substation.

“We are here because this woman tried to decapitate two souls,” said Maricopa County prosecutor Shaylee Beasley during her closing arguments in February, according to the Arizona Republic.

Beasley described in detail how Inoue “delivered chop after chop” to the children while they both “tried to protect their heads.” She reportedly showed close-up photos of the children’s horrific injuries to the jury and claimed their deaths were connected to a bitter divorce she was having with their father.

Inoue’s attorney, Rebecca Felmly, had previously said that she believed there was enough reasonable doubt presented at Inoue’s trial for the jury to deliver a verdict of not guilty. During her first court appearance in 2021, Inoue told the judge “I did not kill anybody” through her interpreter.

“(The medical examiner) likened the amount of force to a guillotine,” Felmly said, according to AZFamily. “She is a very tiny, very slightly-built woman. She doesn’t have the energy, the power, or the strength to cause that type of injury to those kids.”

The child abuse case that Inoue was convicted of stemmed from a report made by Inoue’s husband in March 2021 — just months before the killings — saying Inoue “took Kai” and their whereabouts were unknown. “Police eventually located Ms. Inoue and Kai behind a convenience store,” DCS officials said in a May 2021 statement. “Ms. Inoue was taken to a psychiatric hospital and Kai was returned to his father.”

DCS investigators said they did not observe any “visible signs of abuse or neglect on the children” and the kids claimed “they felt safe with their parents.” The investigation did not find any evidence to warrant removal from the home, according to DCS officials.

A Kansas man allegedly shot his mother and aunt after he was evicted from their home — and then fled to Missouri, where he reportedly confessed to the crime at a pharmacy.

Luke Anthony Howard, 34, was being held in custody in Missouri’s Clay County on $5 million bond, according to reporting from KCTV, a local CBS affiliate. He is awaiting extradition to Johnson County in Kansas, where the county’s district attorney said Howard murdered his mother, Valerie Howard, 63, and his aunt Joyce Austin, 71. According to court documents obtained by KCTV, Howard had been living with the two women and was given an eviction notice by Austin before he allegedly shot them.

Court documents, including an arrest affidavit, stated that on Feb. 12, Howard turned up at a pharmacy in Liberty, Missouri, about 30 miles away from the Lenexa, Kansas, home where he lived with his mother and aunt. According to the affidavit, Howard was observed by the pharmacy staff to have blood on his clothes as he reportedly told them that he needed to turn himself into police. When police arrived, Howard allegedly confessed to double murder.

Lenexa police responded to the home of Valerie Howard and Joyce Austin where both women were found dead from gunshot wounds. Police reportedly found about a dozen shell casings in the same room. Austin’s son also called police the same day to ask if his mother was dead, reportedly telling police that Howard owned guns.

The court records included a timeline of events leading up to Feb. 10, when police were called to the Lenexa home after an apparent physical altercation between Howard and his mother. During that first call, she told police that she and Austin locked themselves in their rooms to hide from Howard because he’d acted violently toward them during an incident in 2021.

The same day, Austin called police on Howard again, reportedly telling police that Howard had threatened her and was acting erratic. She stated that Howard had bipolar disorder and she wanted him to leave the house.

On Feb. 11, Howard placed a call of his own to police to report that Austin had threatened him with a gun, a claim that he soon recanted. He also claimed that he was being kicked out of the house, and Austin reportedly confirmed that she had given Howard 30 days to leave. During that call, Johnson County Mental Health officials came to the home and asked Howard if he had guns. He said he did not, and a search did not uncover any guns in the home.

Howard is still in custody in Clay County, Missouri, on $5 million bond, awaiting an extradition hearing.

An Oklahoma man was sentenced for killing his girlfriend’s grandparents and burying their bodies in their own backyard.

Lucas Anthony Walker, 22, was sentenced to 35 years in federal prison for the murders of Deborah and Larry Dutton, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced in a Friday press release. Walker pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder.

The victims were murdered in their home in Dewey, about 50 miles north of Tulsa, on Dec. 19, 2022.

Their bodies were found the following month in their backyard, reported Andy Dossett of the Bartlesville Examiner-Enterprise.

Ring doorbell video showed Walker and Heidi Dutton dragging the bodies to the backyard, reported local NBC affiliate KSNW, citing court documents.

Walker’s then-girlfriend, Heidi Dutton, who was 17 at the time, told police she asked Walker to murder the couple, who adopted her as their daughter, “because she wanted them dead,” Dossett reported, citing police affidavits and preliminary hearing testimony.

“We kill them,” Heidi Dutton said she told her boyfriend during an interview with police, the newspaper reported.

More Law&Crime coverage: Man asked mom to ‘Give me a hug, because I am going to jail’ after shooting sister in face because he didn’t ‘approve of her lifestyle’: Police

She initially admitted to investigators that she killed her grandparents and that Walker helped her clean up, but later reversed her and Walker’s roles.

Walker confessed to shooting and stabbing Deborah Dutton and stabbing Larry Dutton to death, officials said.

The two reportedly spent the elder Duttons’ money before their arrests.

An obituary said Larry Dutton was a retired Master Staff Sgt. in the U.S. Air Force and former manager of the Lt. William M. Milliken Airport in Eureka, Kansas.

His wife was originally from Tennessee, a retired Staff Sgt. in the U.S. Air Force, and a former chef.

They were former churchgoers in Kansas. Congregants at their former church, Eureka United Methodist, were shocked.

“They’re shaken. They’re visibly shaken,” Rev. Linda Pope told KOKI. “How do we make sense of all of this, and how do we turn this over to a higher power? There, there’s just so many unanswered questions.”

Heidi Dutton’s plea and sentencing hearing is set for March 5, online court records show.

A 19-year-old man in California allegedly murdered an Orange County couple he owed $80,000 to — executing them separately in the desert with gunshots — before burning their bodies and Teslas to hide the evidence, prosecutors say.

Huangting Gong, of Glendale, is accused of driving around with the victims’ bodies in their Teslas as he killed them both in order last month, starting first with Kuanlun Wang, 37, before setting his deadly sights on Wang’s wife, Jing Li, also 37.

Wang had agreed to meet with Gong at an undisclosed location in the Southern California desert on Oct. 12, according to an Orange County District Attorney’s Office press release and his criminal complaint. Prosecutors believe the two men were discussing what Wang owed when Gong allegedly shot him in the head.

After “executing” Wang, Gong allegedly put his body in Wang’s Tesla that he drove out to the desert and took the vehicle back to Wang’s home in Brea, where he encountered Li.

“Gong is then accused of attacking Li with a hammer and hitting her while forcing her to give him her phone’s password,” according to the DA’s office. “Gong is accused of putting Li inside of her own Tesla, taking her to a desert area in San Bernardino where he shot her and then burned her body.”

Once this was done, Gong then allegedly returned to retrieve Wang’s body from his home and burned it in a desert area in Riverside County, according to prosecutors.

He capped off his murder errands with a trip to “different desert areas” to set the two Teslas on fire, prosecutors say, before later returning to the couple’s home on Oct. 14 to allegedly swipe nearly $250,000 worth of watches, shoes, handbags and clothing, according to the complaint.

“Depravity does not adequately describe the callousness involved to kill a human being and then drive around in the victim’s own car with his body inside in order to carry out the rest of his plan,” said Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer in a statement Tuesday. “No one deserves the fate of being executed and then set on fire in the middle of the desert in a desperate attempt by a killer to cover up his crimes. We are committed to pursuing justice for the victims and their loved ones.”

One of the things that helped lead investigators with the Brea Police Department to Gong was an alleged sighting of him on Wang’s home surveillance system on Oct. 14. Prosecutors say a “family member” was trying to get in contact with Wang and Li but couldn’t, so she checked the surveillance video and spotted Gong, who denied it was him.

“[T]hen her access to the video surveillance system was cut off,” according to the DA’s office.

Prosecutors say it was this same family member who told them of the $80,000 debt allegedly hanging over Gong’s head, claiming he was a “business associate” of Wang’s who owed him the money for undisclosed reasons.

“After not hearing from Wang, his family member contacted Gong on October 12, 2024, who told her Wang and Wang’s wife … never showed up for a trip to New York City to meet with another business associate who could give Wang the $80,000 Gong owed him,” the DA’s office says. “Wang’s family were not aware of any trip planned to New York.”

Gong was arrested on Nov. 5 while returning home from a trip to Seattle. He has been charged with a laundry list of felonies related to his alleged crimes, including two felony counts of murder, one felony count of kidnapping, two felony counts of arson, two felony counts of first-degree burglary, two felony special circumstances enhancements for committing a double murder, one felony special circumstances enhancement for committing a murder during the commission of kidnapping, and two felony enhancements for discharging a firearm that caused death.

Since the killings have been deemed “special circumstances murder cases,” prosecutors say Gong is eligible for both a maximum life sentence without the possibility of parole and the death penalty, which is only allowed for special circumstances cases in California.

“In special circumstances murder cases, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office convenes a special circumstances committee after the preliminary hearing is held to determine whether to pursue the death penalty,” according to the DA’s office. “This process includes a presentation of the case by the prosecutor as well as from the defense. The elected District Attorney makes the ultimate decision whether to pursue death after going through that process. If the decision is not to pursue death, then the maximum sentence is life without the possibility of parole.”

Court records show that Gong is scheduled to be arraigned on Dec. 2 in Santa Ana.
