Louisiana’s top law enforcement officials announced that they are seeking the extradition of a New York doctor for prescribing and mailing abortion pills to the mother of a pregnant minor in the Pelican State, where the procedure is prohibited in nearly all circumstances.

Dr. Margaret D. Carpenter and her practice, Nightingale Medical, were named in a grand jury indictment filed in January by West Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Tony Clayton, according to court documents reviewed by Law&Crime. Carpenter is based in New Paltz, located some 80 miles north of New York City.

Carpenter, the one-page indictment says, “on or about April 5, 2024, did knowingly cause an abortion to occur by means of delivering, dispensing, distributing, or providing a pregnant [woman] with an abortion-inducing drug,” the one-page indictment says. Doing so was “[c]ontrary to the law of the State of Louisiana and against the peace and dignity of the same,” the indictment adds.

The minor’s mother, whose name has not been released to protect the identity of the child, has also been indicted on felony charges in connection to the event.

While all states typically enforce extradition agreements, it does not appear that will be the case when states with abortion bans enacted after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade find themselves facing of against states that do allow the procedure.

Earlier this month, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed a shield a law designed to protect against out out-of-state indictments and prosecutions for doctors prescribing abortion medications. She also appeared on CNN last week where she said there was “no way in hell” she would allow Carpenter to be turned over to authorities in Louisiana

Despite Hochul’s insistence, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill on Tuesday put out a statement on X, formerly Twitter, saying she had signed an extradition form for Carpenter, adding, “We will take any and all legal actions to enforce the criminal laws of this State!”

Murrill had previously taken aim at Hochul regarding her aforementioned appearance on CNN, during which the governor conceded that if Carpenter were arrested in another anti-abortion state, that state would be able to extradite her to Louisiana, saying Carpenter would have to “be careful about her travel plans.”

“Dr. Carpenter needs to be careful with her travel plans,” Murrill wrote in a Facebook post that included a clip from Hochul’s television appearance.

Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry on Thursday also got into the mix, posting a video to Facebook on Thursday confirming that he’d signed the extradition form and warrant for Carpenter’s arrest.

“A minor in Louisiana got pregnant. This minor was excited to have a baby and was planning a gender reveal party,” Landry said in a statement and video posted to Facebook. “Her mom conspired with a New York doctor to get a chemical abortion pill in the mail and then forced that minor to take it. This minor ended up in the hospital. This pill ended up ending her pregnancy and that baby’s life. There is only one right answer in this situation and it’s that that doctor must face extradition to Louisiana where justice will be served. We owe this to the minor and the innocent life lost.”

New York Attorney General Letitia James has previously castigated Louisiana’s attempt to prosecute the doctor, pledging to take the same stand as Hochul.

“The criminalization of abortion care is a direct and brazen attack on Americans’ bodily autonomy and their right to reproductive freedom,” she said in a Jan. 31, statement. “This cowardly attempt out of Louisiana to weaponize the law against out-of-state providers is unjust and un-American.”

The ex-wife of a California doctor who reportedly helped celebrities and athletes overcome addiction allegedly hired the man who killed her ex-husband in an ambush-style murder for “financial gain.”

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced Monday that his office is charging 53-year-old Ahang Mirshojae with murder in the death of her ex-husband, Dr. Hamid Mirshojae.

“She’s been charged with, effectively, hiring a hitman,” Hochman said at a press conference.

Ahang Mirshojae is charged with murder and assault with a deadly weapon. According to Hochman, the ex-wife hired Evan Hardman, 41, to sneak up behind the doctor as he left his Woodland Hills practice in August and shoot him in the back of the head before a getaway driver, Ashley Rose Sweeting, 40, helped him flee the scene. Another defendant, 26-year-old Sarallah Jawed, also helped carry out the scheme by driving Hardman to Texas after the murder, prosecutors say.

More from Law&Crime: Parents of woman accused in ambush-style murder of Microsoft exec ex-husband win custody of kids, widow insists it’s not what victim ‘would have wanted’

“The horror and betrayal of this crime are beyond words,” Hochman said in a statement. “The depth of the deceit and violence involved in this case is chilling, and we will not rest until justice is served.”

Hardman is accused of intentionally killing the victim by “lying in wait.” Sweeting, who is charged with accessory after the fact, allegedly drove Hardman to and from the scene. Hardman and Sweeting waited until Dr. Mirshojae, 61, walked out of his office around 5:30 p.m. Aug. 23 and the alleged gunman carried out the murder as he was entering his car, prosecutors said.

Hochman also revealed that Ahang Mirshojae hired Hardman and Jawed to jump her ex-husband on May 3 and beat him with a blunt object, reportedly a baseball bat. Dr. Mirshojae and his ex-wife have had a decade-long legal battle over their divorce, Los Angeles NBC affiliate KNBC reported, citing legal documents. Prosecutors said she ordered the hit for “financial gain” but have not said what role the reported divorce battle may have played in the slaying. Hamid Mirshojae had since remarried.

Revelations of the doctor’s ex-wife allegedly orchestrating the murder have left his family stunned.

“Immediately I start thinking about my nephews and nieces. Their father was killed, and now their mother was the cause. I still can’t digest it. I don’t understand. Taking somebody’s life, it’s beyond me,” his younger brother Alireza Mirshojae told KNBC. “It’s like I can’t understand how could somebody feel so much anger and resentment, and I don’t understand how someone would feel to do something like this.”

As Law&Crime previously reported, officers arrested Hardman in the Houston area and Sweeting in the San Fernando Valley earlier this month.

According to his biography on his website, Dr. Mirshojae worked in addiction medicine for over a decade and provided emergency care for 20 years. It said he treated “celebrities, movie stars, athletes and many people of different walks of life.”

“He has helped thousands of patients achieve their goal of having a sober life,” the bio said.

Local CW affiliate KTLA reported the doctor hailed from Iran. Friends and former patients spoke highly of him.

“Everyone in the Woodland Hills area, even in LA, they know him because he was a really good doctor,” family friend Maryem Alaei told KTLA in the aftermath of the shooting. “Always laughing, always joking, always helping people.”

Said former patient Pamia Mazahrei: “I don’t know why bad things happen to people who are good in this world.”

Background: Deer Ridge Correctional Institution (KTVZ/YouTube). Inset: Inside Deer Ridge (KMTR/YouTube).

A prison doctor in Oregon is accused of normalizing his sexual abuse of an inmate with talks about horses, art and lunch — sometimes laughing in his face about the alleged assaults — while his higher-ups turned a blind eye, a new lawsuit says.

James Watkins, now a free man, alleges he was abused “over a course of months” by Oregon Department of Corrections physician Dr. Leland Beamer, who is chief medical officer at Deer Ridge Correctional Institution in Jefferson County.

Watkins’ lawyers, Alicia LeDuc Montgomery and Elisabeth Claus, say he suffered from “physical pain and continues to suffer from personal humiliation, fear, anxiety, and mental and emotional distress” as a result of the abuse and have filed a lawsuit in federal court against DOC officials and employees, including Beamer and Deer Ridge’s former superintendent Amber Sundquist, who is accused of ignoring complaints and lawsuits regarding ODOC medical employees like Beamer who are “sexually harassing or abusing adults in custody at DOC facilities,” according to Watkins’ suit.

“Between November 2022, and January 2023, plaintiff Watkins was treated by Dr. Beamer during approximately five medical appointments,” the complaint says. “Beamer’s actions toward plaintiff Watkins in subsequent medical appointments became increasingly inappropriate and harmful.”

During one exam, Beamer allegedly made “uncomfortable personal remarks” and “engaged in inappropriate touching” of Watkins’ legs and arms — commenting on how “big” he was, the complaint says. Beamer allegedly tried plying Watkins with offers of “personal favors” and promises of future lunch dates once he got out, where they’d be “talking about horses” Beamer owns and discussing ways he can “help Watkins with his art,” the complaint said.

Watkins began seeing Beamer after he slipped on water and fell in the DRCI kitchen area, leading to a back injury and appointments for injections. Beamer’s alleged abuse started with normal examinations for the injections before the doctor began requesting more “uncomfortable” procedures and committing “inappropriate” acts, like “open-palm slapping” Watkins on his bare buttocks and carrying out an alleged sphincter exam on him that made the former inmate feel “sexually violated,” according to his lawyers.

More from Law&Crime: ‘Cruel’ prison manager punished for ‘horrendous’ sexual abuse of inmates at women’s lockup known as ‘Club Fed’

“Defendant Beamer performed a sphincter exam on plaintiff Watkins,” the complaint says, noting how Beamer allegedly “laughed” at the end of the procedure.

“Watkins felt uncomfortable with the idea of the exam, but defendant Beamer insisted on proceeding,” the document says. “Defendant Beamer heard plaintiff Watkins tell him to stop touching plaintiff and to stop the ‘exam.’ But defendant Beamer did not stop the ‘exam’ after plaintiff Watkins objected.”

In addition to physical pain, Watkins says he was “subsequently diagnosed with PTSD” after the alleged incidents. He claims to have “exhausted all administrative remedies” regarding the alleged abuse after filing “grievances and appeals” to no avail. Watkins’ only option left at this point, per his lawyers, was to file a federal lawsuit, which falls in line with what other inmates have done in recent years.

“The Oregon Department of Corrections has been on notice for years about its systemic problem of sexual abuse and exploitation of inmates by prison staff,” LeDuc Montgomery said in a statement this week, which pointed to similar cases like the 2023 conviction of former prison nurse Tony Klein, who was sentenced to 30 years for abusing female inmates.

“This is not a case of a male prison official raping female inmates, but that is precisely why this case is important,” she told Law&Crime on Thursday. “If the Oregon Department of Corrections lets any form of sexual abuse slide under the radar, it enables the culture and environment that leads to egregious events like we saw with the Tony Klein prosecution. ODOC needs to take bodily autonomy and safety seriously, and hold perpetrators of any form of sexual misconduct accountable.”

Watkins is suing for damages, attorney fees and costs to “redress the violations of his constitutional and state law rights caused by [Beamer’s] misconduct.”

Attempts by Law&Crime to reach DOC officials and Beamer on Thursday were unsuccessful.
