A Connecticut man allegedly beat a woman to death with a baseball bat over $200 in cocaine, then lived with her body in their apartment for a week-and-a-half before he dismembered her, put her torso in a suitcase and rolled it to a nearby cemetery.

Donald Coffel stands accused of murder in the death of 58-year-old Suzanne Wormser in the city of Groton. According to a probable cause arrest affidavit posted to local CBS affiliate WFSB, Groton city police began investigating on March 19 when a passerby smelled a foul odor from a suitcase at the entrance of Colonel Ledyard Cemetery. The caller told cops he had noticed the suitcase near some trash cans and became curious about what was inside. When he walked up to the suitcase, it smelled as if something was rotting inside, so he called police.

More from Law&Crime: ‘Identification took some time’: 70-year-old woman found chopped up in closet, her body parts stowed away in over a dozen trash bags — son in custody, cops say

Cops got on scene and opened the suitcase to find the torso of a woman’s body that was missing the head and other extremities. Police on April 11 posted a press release on its Facebook page about the death along with an FBI tip line. Wormser’s sister called in to say she hadn’t heard from her in months and she didn’t call to wish her a happy birthday, which was unlike her. She gave cops Wormser’s address and detectives went to check out the apartment in the 100 block of Allen Street, which happens to be less than 1,000 feet from the cemetery.

Officers also learned that Coffel had lived with her for a time. Neighbors told cops they hadn’t seen Wormser in months and Coffel was in the hospital. Cops entered the home and it was evident there had been a crime committed, the affidavit said. There was blood on the walls, rugs, furniture and clothing. Investigators also found a baseball bat hidden behind a bookcase. On the bat, there appeared to be dried blood and strands of brown hair matted on it, according to the cops.

Detectives went to the hospital to speak with Coffel, who was receiving treatment for pancreatic cancer. During a noncustodial interview, Coffel explained that he used to be Wormser’s neighbor before he moved to Arizona for a few months to live near his sister. That didn’t work out, so he moved back to Groton. Since he didn’t have anywhere else to live, Wormser allowed him to live with her starting in late November. He told cops Wormser had drug and mental health problems, and he didn’t particularly like her, but he tolerated her since she was allowing him to live in the apartment.

Coffel said he had back surgery in late December and stayed in the hospital before returning home in late January. He said she was there when he came home, but later left. Cops noted in the affidavit he “seemed to settle on the idea of the victim going missing between January and February when he came back from a hospital visit.” Coffel allegedly said he didn’t know where she went and it wasn’t unusual for her to leave for a day or two at a time and return.

Meanwhile, investigators tested the blood in the apartment and it came back as a DNA match to the remains found in the suitcase at the cemetery.

Detectives received a call on April 22 from a witness who told them Coffel allegedly admitted to him that he beat Wormser with a baseball bat because she stole $200 worth of cocaine that was in his briefcase. They returned to the hospital on April 23 and confronted Coffel about this revelation and questioned if they were going to find his DNA on her body, the affidavit said. After repeated questioning, Coffel allegedly copped to his crime.

“Alright man,” he said, according to the affidavit. “I did it. I hit her in the head with a f—ing baseball bat and it cracked her f—ing head open.”

Coffel allegedly told cops he killed her sometime in the early part of January. Upset about the missing drugs, he said he walked up to her with the bat and hit her in the head three times, killing her, according to cops. After about a week-and-a-half of living with the body, he used a hacksaw to chop her up, cops said. He disposed of her parts in trash bags and dumped them in two different dumpsters, the affidavit said. He put the torso in the suitcase and took it over to the cemetery, according to the affidavit.

Police obtained a warrant for murder and arrested him at the hospital, where he remains.

Because the case was so gruesome and there were so few details publicly released in the early part of the investigation, rumors swirled about a possible serial killer. But cops debunked that rumor at a Friday press conference announcing Coffel’s arrest.

Coffel is being held on a $1 million bond.

Insets, from left: Steven Gress, Michelle Brandes and Miranda Corsette (St. Petersburg Police Department). Background: Dumpster where Miranda’s body was disposed (WFLA/YouTube).

A Florida couple allegedly suffocated a teen girl to death with a billiard ball before chopping her up and stuffing the body parts in the trunk after torturing her for a week over a missing ring.

Steven Gress, 35, and his girlfriend Michelle Brandes, 37, needed to dispose of the victim’s remains — but first they needed to celebrate Brandes’ birthday, cops wrote in a search warrant request obtained by the Tampa Bay Times. Gress and Brandes ate chicken at Popeyes and then played mini golf at Congo River in Clearwater, the 25-page warrant written by the St. Petersburg Police Department reportedly said. After their birthday bash, the two suspects allegedly drove around the Tampa Bay area looking for places to dispose of 16-year-old Miranda Corsette’s body.

More from Law&Crime: ‘There’s no legs or arms on it’: Wife allegedly murdered ex-Green Beret husband and left him in rural pond after he told her about plans to divorce

Eventually, they found a dumpster near where Gress’ grandparents lived in Ruskin and tossed Miranda’s remains there, the warrant reportedly said. They got lucky: Cops believe the dumpster was taken to a landfill and its contents — including Mirada’s remains — were incinerated. Now prosecutors will have to try and convict the couple without a body.

But helping the state’s case is the fact at least six people saw Miranda with the couple or knew she was being tortured, the warrant seeking to obtain the contents of Gress’ mother’s phone reportedly states. Per cops, Gress was known by neighbors to take disadvantaged women into his home. Miranda, a mother of an 1-year-old child, was a frequent runaway with mental health and drug issues, cops said. Detectives believe Gress and Miranda met on a dating app and took her to his home in mid-February. Gress allegedly spoke to neighbors about the girl and even bragged to them about hurting her.

“This little b—- stole my ring and won’t give it back,” he reportedly said. “So I’ve been beating her a–.”

Gress also allegedly sent nude pictures of Miranda that showed her increasingly worsening injuries to at least three people, including his mother. His mother denied seeing them.

While no one else has been charged, Sixth Judicial Circuit State Attorney Bruce Bartlett told the Times “there’s a pretty good likelihood of more to come.” Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against Gress and Brandes.

Detectives also questioned a woman who lived with the defendants. She accused Gress of being abusive and he would buy animals off Craigslist and kill them by throwing them off a bridge, the warrant reportedly stated. Not long into Miranda’s stay, he accused her of stealing his ring, cops reportedly wrote. This sparked the weeklong abuse and torture, cops allege. As the alleged torture continued, Brandes said she found the ring. The roommate thought Brandes probably had it all along and took it so he would ditch Miranda, according to the warrant.

The woman reportedly told detectives on Feb. 23, the day of Miranda’s death, the defendants stuffed a billiard ball in the girl’s mouth and wrapped plastic around her head. Miranda suffocated.

As Law&Crime previously reported, the St. Petersburg Police Department said in a March 7 press release that Gress picked up the girl on Feb. 14 after meeting her on a dating app and took her to his home in the 2700 block of 27th Ave. N. After hanging out that day, he drove her back to her home. Miranda returned to his home the next day, and this time she would not make it out alive.

After killing, Miranda, Gress and Brandes placed the teen’s body in his car and drove the remains some 15 miles to a home in the 12000 block of Mallory Drive in Largo, cops said. There, police believe she was dismembered. Her remains were once again moved, this time to a dumpster about 55 miles away.

Miranda’s grandmother, who had custody of her after both of her parents died, reported her missing to Gulfport police on Feb. 24. Gulfport police commander and acting chief Mary Farrand said her department is “very familiar” with Miranda, who is a “frequent runaway” with a history of mental health issues and drug abuse. She also was the mother of a 11-month-old child. Her grandma told police Miranda was known to run away and she’d usually return home, but not this time.

More from Law&Crime: ‘Basically, he’s a monster’: Man who ‘seemed to enjoy killing’ gets conviction and death sentence overturned in triple-murder case by state Supreme Court

On March 6, a “witness” contacted police regarding information about a kidnapping and homicide. Police realized they already had Gress in custody after he allegedly pointed a harpoon at Brandes and was in possession of drugs. Detectives quickly unfurled the case, and Brandes turned herself into cops on March 8.

Gress was quite chatty during his first appearance.

After the judge read the allegations against him, he reportedly told the court, “They just said I suffocated,” before a public defender quickly intervened and ordered him to “not say anymore!”

Gress also questioned the court about the whereabouts of Brandes.

“Where is Michelle Brandes at?” Gress asked twice, video from local Fox affiliate WTVT showed.

“Talk to your lawyer,” the judge sternly advised Gress before ending the hearing.

Both Gress and Brandes stand accused of first-degree murder and kidnapping. They are being held at the Pinellas County Jail without bond.

Solomon Martinez, 27, was found guilty by a jury on March 13 after going on trial for the January 2024 murder of Renee Portillos, 47. According to reporting from the courtroom by KKTV, a local CBS affiliate, prosecutors presented DNA evidence, the autopsy report, and evidence from Martinez’s phone that pointed to his guilt. The defense unsuccessfully argued that Portillos killed herself.

When Martinez was arrested by officers with the Pueblo Police Department on Jan. 10, 2024, he was working as a private security guard at the Sangre De Cristo Arts Center. In court documents obtained by ABC affiliate KRDO at the time, officers stated that they overheard Martinez talking before they made contact with him. He reportedly said, “I had a hand in my jacket for two days.”

According to court documents, officers found a severed, human hand in a plastic bag in the pocket of his jacket as well as blood in his vehicle. During questioning by police, officers noticed visible cuts on his hands. A witness reportedly showed police a video he recorded that showed the victim’s body, which had been decapitated.

The documents stated that Martinez told police that he picked up Portillos for a sexual encounter on the night of Jan. 8, 2024. Martinez claimed that she demanded to be paid for the encounter and he refused. After that, he said that he dropped her off in the early hours of the morning.

Martinez’s story to police also involved his roommate at the time. According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by The Pueblo Chieftain, the unnamed roommate spotted a blood-covered Martinez at a car wash at about 5 a.m. on Jan. 9. Martinez reportedly asked his roommate to borrow some tools and dig a 10-foot-deep hole, offering to forgive $1,000 of debt in exchange for his help.

The roommate declined, later telling KRDO, “I was terrified. I was beyond terrified. Like, I can’t even put into words how physically scared I was.” The outlet reported that a friend of the roommate called the police.

Portillos’ remains were found on Jan. 9 in Fountain Creek.

Martinez was found guilty of first-degree murder after deliberation, tampering with a dead body, and abuse of a corpse.

A Florida couple is behind bars after they allegedly lured a teenage girl they met online to their home, tortured and suffocated her to death over a piece of missing jewelry, and dismembered her body before disposing of her remains in a dumpster.

Steven Gress, 35, and his girlfriend Michell Brandes, 37, stand accused of first-degree murder and kidnapping in the death of 16-year-old Miranda Corsette. The St. Petersburg Police Department said in a press release Friday that Gress picked up the girl on Feb. 14 after meeting her on a dating app and took her to his home in the 2700 block of 27th Ave. N. After hanging out that day, he drove her back to her home. Miranda returned to his home the next day, but this time she would not make it out alive.

More from Law&Crime: ‘F— you, he is not going to bite me’: Boyfriend ‘jealous’ of 5-year-old getting ‘too much attention’ beat him to death for being ‘disrespectful,’ police say

St. Petersburg police Chief Anthony Holloway told reporters at a press conference that there was a dispute over some missing jewelry on Feb. 20. Gress and Brandes allegedly assaulted and tortured Miranda for the next week.

“Repeatedly beat the victim, while holding her captive for seven days and eventually suffocating her by wrapping plastic wrap around her face,” a judge said during Gress’ first appearance, according to local NBC affiliate WFLA.

Gress and Brandes then put the teen’s body in his car and drove the remains some 15 miles to a home in the 12000 block of Mallory Drive in Largo. There, police believe she was dismembered. Her remains were once again moved, this time to a dumpster about 55 miles away across Tampa Bay. Cops have located the dumpster, however the remains were disposed into a Hillsborough County landfill. Cops are continuing to search for Miranda’s body.

On Thursday, a “witness” contacted police regarding information about a kidnapping and homicide. Police realized they already had Gress in custody after he allegedly pointed a harpoon at Brandes and was in possession of drugs. Detectives quickly unfurled the horrific case. Brandes turned herself into cops on Saturday.

Both Gress and Brandes are being held at the Pinellas County Jail without bond.

A Florida man is under arrest after strangling his girlfriend to death, dismembering her body, and then hiding her remains in a haphazardly tossed-away suitcase, officials in the Sunshine State say.

Jorge Javier Quintero, 41, stands accused of one count each of murder in the first degree and fraudulent use of personal information, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

But it was concern for the alleged killer’s own well-being that led law enforcement to the grim circumstances of a weekslong missing persons case that came to a gruesome denouement this week.

On Oct. 29, a friend asked law enforcement to perform a wellness check on Quintero after allegedly receiving a string of unusual text messages that led him to believe the defendant was attempting to kill himself, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by Law&Crime.

“When [the friend] arrived at Jorge’s home, he went inside and found the bathtub was covered in blood, there was a knife on the edge of the tub, and Jorge was not present,” the affidavit reads.

After following up with the friend and family, authorities say they learned Quintero had sent several such messages “possibly indicative of suicidal thoughts” beginning at around 5:40 a.m. until 7:12 a.m. when he texted his ex-wife, according to the court document.

First, deputies tried Quintero’s house on Maribou Circle near central Orlando. There, investigators said they found documents that led them to a second residence — where Quintero and Carmen Elsa Escalante Carrera, 29, were in the process of moving in together.

By the end of the initial search, however, the law enforcement presence swelled.

“I came out to go leave to go to work and there was about a dozen sheriff’s cars in the neighborhood,” a neighbor told Daytona Beach-based NBC affiliate WESH earlier this month. “They said that it was a missing person that had mentioned perhaps that there was a suicide note.”

Investigators took note of a large kitchen knife in the bathroom, a blood-filled bathtub, “bloody clothes,” what appeared to be handwritten suicide notes, and information for a newly-leased apartment unit in the nearby census-designated place of Alafaya.

At around 8 a.m. that same morning, sheriff’s deputies entered the second residence located roughly two miles away.

“Deputies went to the complex and discovered that Jorge was already leasing the apartment and attempted to contact him there,” the affidavit reads. “Upon arrival, Deputies discovered the back door was unlocked and there was a piece of cloth with what appeared to be yellow liquid on it. Based on the large amount of blood found in the home at Maribou Circle and the suicide notes, Deputies entered the apartment and cleared the inside to determine if Jorge was present and in need of emergency medical care.”

But once inside the new apartment, the investigation shifted.

There, deputies allegedly found what they termed “bloody towels” and “blood spots on the wall,” along with the presence of women’s clothing as well as Escalante’s wallet and keys.

Investigators then went to the first apartment for a second look.

“[A detective] observed the large amount of blood in the bathtub, the kitchen knife, a shirt soaked in blood, shorts soaked in blood, the notes, and Jorge’s cell phone on the bathtub,” the affidavit reads. “He observed that Jorge’s phone was still on, and he received several text messages and phone calls. He observed the phone to be a dark Apple iPhone, most likely an iPhone 14 pro max based on its features. He also observed two Ring cameras.”

Law enforcement consulted those surveillance cameras and others — ascertaining that a “male figure” left the first apartment around 7:30 a.m. on the October morning in question in a white truck.

Other incongruities slowly added up to something macabre.

While “[i]t appeared as if [Escalante] had moved into” the second apartment, the door was unlocked when law enforcement arrived. Staff at the complex would reveal that the last time the door was used was at 8 p.m. the night before.

Repeat efforts to contact Escalante went nowhere. Finally, a ping to the woman’s cellphone placed her in Seminole County, Georgia — over 300 miles away — on Oct. 29, at 1:30 p.m.

Investigators also learned Quintero had rented a white Dodge Ram pickup truck on Oct. 27, which was due back on Oct. 28, but had not been returned, citing a local Enterprise Rental Car outlet.

“Jorge Javier Quintero’s suspicious activities were concerning and gave me pause,” a detective wrote in one court document. “With every hour that passed, it seemed more likely that homicide was the reason for the disappearance of Carmen Elsa Escalante Carrera.”

Then, in the following hours, authorities pored over photographs taken by license plate reader (LPR) cameras along highways in Georgia and Alabama corresponding with the tag of the rental truck.

“In certain LPR captured photographs, a trash bag can be seen in the bed of the truck,” the affidavit reads. “The trash bag appears to be in the shape of a human body, which makes the suspicious circumstances appear consistent with the crime of murder.”

On Oct. 31, U.S. Marshals located the defendant in Saraland, Alabama — still in the rented pickup truck, authorities say.

A shootout ensued and Quintero was wounded. He is currently recuperating at a hospital in critical but stable condition.

Without saying exactly how, investigators allegedly learned the white pickup truck was seen with a suitcase in the bed — traveling a certain 7-mile stretch of highway in the Peach State.

That suitcase, however, was not in the truck when Quintero was arrested, authorities say. Then, about three hours after the arrest, Georgia authorities found a suitcase containing a black bag and female human remains near the Alabama state line.

Escalante had been visibly strangled with a power cord, authorities allege. Her right arm had been cut off and placed in a separate bag. Her left arm and left leg had wounds that looked “as if someone tried to cut them off but quit during the process,” according to the affidavit.

A detective sat in on the autopsy.

“The first observation I made was that the suitcase appeared identical to the one I had observed in the bed of Jorge Javier Quintero’s rental pickup truck,” the detective wrote. “It still had ratchet straps around it, just like it did in so many of the traffic camera pictures. I then observed a Spirit Airlines ‘Self-Tag’ affixed [to] the handle of the suitcase. It appeared to be from a flight out of Fort Lauderdale, FL in March of 2024. The name on the tag reads, Carmen Escalante.”

A Kentucky woman is behind bars after pieces of another woman’s dismembered body were found behind her mother’s home earlier this week, police in the Bluegrass State say.

Torilena Fields, 32, stands accused of one count each of obstructing governmental operations, tampering with physical evidence, and abuse of corpse, according to Bourbon County jail records.

Law enforcement says multiple indices of occult practices came up during the so-far brief investigation into the macabre crime scene.

Early Wednesday afternoon, maintenance workers arrived at a residence on Brierly Ridge Road in Robertson County, Kentucky, to “work on a building for the property owner,” according to a citation obtained by Cincinnati-based NBC affiliate WLWT.

After receiving no response at the front door, the workers walked around toward the back of the residence, according to a police release cited by Cincinnati-based ABC affiliate WCPO. There, they allegedly found a pile of hair, a bloody mattress, and drag marks. Then, they followed upset grass until making an even more grim discovery.

At around 12:26 p.m., one maintenance worker called 911 after allegedly finding human remains behind the house — presumably those that belonged to the owner of the house. Kansas State Police arrived and found what the document terms a “dismembered body.”

Along with those human remains, state troopers allegedly found a “blood-stained mattress” as well as tell-tale “blood on the back porch” and on the “threshold of the back door,” according to the citation. Additionally, investigators said they found a blood-stained stick near the back porch — and another bloody mattress there.

State troopers also described “drag marks” in the grass — starting from the residence and ending where the body had been dumped.

The workers said Wednesday was at least the second time they had visited the property owned by Trudy Fields this week.

The maintenance men said he had been to the Fields property the day before where they encountered the defendant “casting spells on them and being confrontational,” according to the citation.

A special response team eventually arrived at the residence and attempted to extricate Torilena Fields. The younger woman allegedly refused — leading to a lengthy standoff that only dissipated at around 11 p.m. after the use of tear gas and a police robot, authorities said.

Troopers wrote in the citation that when the defendant finally left the house, she “appeared to have blood on her face, hands and clothing.”

“This is going to be a long night for our guys,” Kentucky State Police Trooper David Jones told Lexington-based Fox affiliate WDKY.

Inside, the crime scene was revealed to be even more gruesome.

The victim’s body had its arms, legs and head removed with the torso and spine “severed in half and the organs removed,” according to the citation. Investigators also said they found body parts that “appeared to have been cooked” in a steel pot inside the oven.

“The pot was still warm to the touch,” the citation reads.

A spokesperson for the Kentucky State Police told Law&Crime the agency would be confirming the identity of the victim on Friday morning following an autopsy.

The defendant is currently being detained at the Bourbon County Detention Center without bond.

State police said additional charges could be filed pending the results of the ongoing investigation.
