The two sons of a slain Georgia man have sued the woman charged with killing him for wrongful death. The defendant, Suzanne Renee Mericle, 61, opened fire through the bedroom door after James David Barron, 68, backed away from an argument, according to the complaint viewed by Law&Crime.

“This family has suffered an unspeakable tragedy and this civil suit has been initiated to protect the family and their legal rights,” said the plaintiff statement, according to The Brunswick News. “The Barrons kindly request that their privacy be respected during this difficult time. Our firm generally does not comment on pending litigation and this is particularly true in a case like this, where an investigation is still ongoing. Therefore, we have no further comment at this time.”

Staffers at Northeast Georgia Medical Center Gainesville pronounced him dead. Mericle, who runs the Mericle Dentistry, is charged with felony murder, aggravated assault under the Family Violence Act, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

According to the lawsuit, the couple had lived together at a home on the 4200 block of Bayridge Drive in the city of Gainesville, Georgia. She allegedly got into an argument with Barron on the night of the shooting.

“At no relevant time did Decedent Barron ever physically assault or batter Defendant Mericle,” the complaint said. “During the argument, Decedent Barron removed himself from the argument and retreated to an upstairs bedroom locking himself inside.”

Mericle allegedly got a gun, and as Barron was locked inside the bedroom, Mericle “negligently and/or intentionally fired at least one shot through the closed door of the bedroom.”

This fatally wounded him, but he lingered.

“Decedent Barron did not die instantaneously from the gunshot wound(s),” the complaint stated. “Instead, Decedent Barron lived for at least several minutes after he was shot, and he experienced extreme mental and physical conscious pain and suffering from the time he was shot until the time he ultimately passed away.”

A “disgruntled” ex-patient walked into his former dentist’s office on Thursday and shot three people, including one fatally, authorities say.

The incident happened just after 4 p.m. in El Cajon, California, a suburb of San Diego. The El Cajon Police Department received calls about shots fired inside the Smile Plus dentist’s office at 480 N. Magnolia Ave. Officers arrived to find two men and one woman suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the men, 28-year-old dentist Benjamin Harouni, died on the scene while the other two victims were rushed to the hospital in serious but stable condition.

Cops identified the suspect as 29-year-old El Cajon resident Mohammed Abdulkareem and learned he fled the scene in a white U-Haul pickup truck. License plate readers picked up the truck’s tag. The department released suspect and vehicle information to local media.

Just after 9 p.m. Thursday, a citizen called San Diego police after seeing the U-Haul truck near 6th Avenue and Quince Street. Officers responded and found Abdulkareem nearby. He allegedly had a gun that he purchased about two weeks ago, along with several handgun magazines. Abdulkareem faces charges of murder and two counts of attempted murder and was taken to San Diego County Central Jail where he’s being held without bond.

Detectives believe he was a “disgruntled former customer” although they didn’t specify why he was upset or whether Harouni was his intended target.

“The El Cajon Police Department mourns with the family and friends of the deceased victim and extends heartfelt condolences to those injured in [Friday’s] senseless and evil act of violence,” El Cajon police Chief Mike Moulton said in a statement.

Police addressed concerns that Harouni may have been targeted due to his Jewish faith.

“While we are still in the early stages of the investigation, we want to make it clear that there is no indication the attack was racially or politically motivated. As we continue to conduct a thorough investigation, we will keep the community informed of any new developments,” the agency posted on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

The Anti-Defamation League’s regional director for San Diego said it has been in contact with law enforcement and noted the ADL’s Center on Extremism has so far not discovered any extremist or hate-related motivation behind the shooting.

Harouni’s family laid him to rest on Sunday and held a vigil in his honor.

“I just wish that I could tell him I love him,” Harouni’s younger brother Jacob said, according to local NBC affiliate KNSD. “I don’t think I told him that enough. I wish I could hug him — hug him really tight. I miss him so much.”

Jacob Harouni said their father, a dentist himself, tried to persuade his brother to pursue a career outside of dentistry. But Benjamin Harouni was insistent.

“He said, ‘No, this is what I want to do. I want to take care of people. I want to help people and literally make people smile,”” the brother reportedly said.

Abdulkareem has a court date scheduled for Tuesday.

Dr. James Michael Ryan (YouTube screenshot) and Sarah Harris (Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office)

A 50-year-old dentist and oral surgeon in Maryland will spend more than four decades behind bars for killing his 25-year-old girlfriend who fatally overdosed on addictive anesthesia medications administered through an at-home IV station the doctor had set up for her in the rental house they shared. State Circuit Court Judge Cheryl A. McCally on Wednesday ordered James Michael Ryan to serve a sentence of 45 years in a state correctional facility, authorities announced.

As previously reported by Law&Crime, a Montgomery County jury in August deliberated for less than three hours before finding Ryan guilty of one count of second-degree depraved heart murder and one count of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Sarah Harris. He was also convicted on charges of possession with the intent to distribute midazolam and distribution of ketamine and diazepam.

Ryan had been facing a maximum sentence of 55 years in prison before Wednesday’s sentencing hearing, however, the state sentencing guidelines had been calculated at between 10 to 25 years, the Washington Post reported. McCally reportedly said she decided to far exceed those guidelines due to Ryan’s significant contribution to Harris’ death — providing her with the drugs stolen from his practice — as well as his exploitation of a position of power over the former beauty queen who began working for him for several years before her death. Prosecutors said that he “often administered” the drugs to Harris himself.

During the sentencing hearing, McCally reportedly recounted “the march to Sarah’s death,” emphasizing text messages showed Ryan on at least one occasion administered ketamine to Harris while she was asleep.

According to court documents, Ryan said he went to bed at 10:30 p.m. on Jan. 25, 2020. He said the alleged victim was “okay when he went to bed,” However, when he went back downstairs on Jan. 26, 2022, he told police he found her “unresponsive on the couch with used hypodermic needles and various vials of controlled dangerous substances bottles nearby,” the court paperwork indicates.

Despite lifesaving measures from Montgomery County Fire Rescue, Harris died there, the press release stated.

Ryan was first arrested and charged in Harris’ death in March 2022.

Ryan and Harris first met when she visited his office for a medical procedure in the fall of 2020. During the procedure, Harris shared that she had experience working in a dental office. Ryan later contacted Harris about a job at his office. Harris accepted the offer and began working for him as a surgical technician.

In January 2021, Harris and Ryan began dating, with Harris spending “significant time” at Ryan’s home, authorities said. The two began living together permanently in the summer of 2021. Despite outspoken concerns from her family members, Harris’ relationship with Ryan continued up until her death from overdosing.

Authorities said an autopsy determined that her cause of death was ketamine and diazepam intoxication. Various vials of the drugs, hypodermic needles, syringes, and tourniquets were also found in the home.

According to text messages obtained by authorities, Harris asked Ryan to provide her with drugs from his medical practice. Ryan then told Harris how to use the drugs he provided. The two also discussed ways to make the effects of the drugs more potent and how to help Harris recover from the effects as quickly as possible.

The location of the office of Molldrem Family Dentistry, P.A., is seen in Eden Prairie, Minn. (via Google Maps). Inset: Dr. Kevin Molldrem (via Molldrem Family Dentistry website).

A dentist in Minnesota allegedly performed dozens of procedures on a patient in one day, overdosed her with anesthesia, and falsified medical records — and now that patient wants the dentist to pay.

Kathleen Wilson says Dr. Kevin Molldrem and his dental practice, Molldrem Family Dentistry, negligently performed more than 30 procedures in a single day, leaving her disfigured and seriously injured. According to a lawsuit filed in Hennepin County, Wilson “has endured and will continue to endure pain and suffering, embarrassment, emotional distress, and disfigurement as a direct result of Dr. Molldrem’s negligence.”

Specifically, Wilson alleges that on July 14, 2020, Molldrem “attempt[ed] to provide 8 crowns, 4 root canals, and 20 restorations in a single visit, and perform[ed] this work improperly.”

An expert dentist hired by Wilson’s attorneys said that it is simply impossible for Molldrem to have done all of this work in one day, especially considering that Wilson had a “very rare” condition in which many of her teeth were susceptible to decay.

“[Wilson’s] required a slow, thoughtful, careful and measured response to her disease,” wrote Dr. Avrum Goldstein, a dentist retained by Wilson’s lawyers to provide an expert opinion about Molldrem’s alleged negligence and the cause of Wilson’s injuries. “Trying to fill every hole in every tooth in her mouth in one visit is not only the antithesis of what was indicated, it is not humanly possible to achieve in an effective or constructive manner.”

“It is inconceivable that Dr. Molldrem could have prepared and placed 8 crowns under these circumstances in the time allotted, not to mention the additional 20 restorations,” Goldstein also said in his report.

In addition, Goldstein’s report says, Molldrem dosed Wilson with unsafe levels of anesthesia for her procedures, during which she was under IV sedation while also receiving local anesthetic.

“There are finite amounts of anesthetic that can be administered over a 5- or 6-hour period, and exceeding that amount places the patient at risk for an overdose of anesthetic and potential harmful effects,” Goldstein wrote. Records show that Molldrem nearly doubled the standard number of units of anesthesia — in just under three hours, the lawsuit alleges.

In doing so, Goldstein concluded, Molldrem “grossly exceed[ed] what would be considered safe,” the report said. “Any negative cardiovascular or central nervous system outcomes could be tied to the local anesthetic overdose. While Ms. Wilson may have been fortunate to not experience these side effects, that does not absolve Dr. Molldrem from administering an overdose of medication.”

According to Wilson’s complaint, Molldrem falsified medical records regarding how much anesthesia Wilson received for the procedures.

Within a year, Goldstein says, nearly all of Molldrem’s work needed to be repaired.

Wilson says that since the procedures, she has had to seek treatment from other providers “to examine and repair the negligent work performed by Dr. Molldrem.” She also says her injuries and medical costs are ongoing, and she has lost income and the capacity to work due to the treatments. She alleges more than $50,000 in damages.

Lawyers for Wilson declined to comment to Law&Crime. Molldrem’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
