Left to right: Ashley Susana Usadel and Travis Scott Smart (Northumberland County Prison).

The parents of a newborn baby in Pennsylvania have been arrested in connection with the child’s tragic death after authorities say they didn’t set up a bassinet or crib, instead letting the child sleep in their bed where he died. Ashley Susana Usadel, 31, and Travis Scott Smart, 34, were arrested Thursday morning and charged with one count each of child endangerment in the tragic death of young Zane Scott Usadel-Smart, records reviewed by Law&Crime show.

Usadel is also facing an additional charge of involuntary manslaughter.

According to court documents obtained by NorthCentralPA, officers with the Sunbury Police Department responded at about 2:30 a.m. on April 10 to a home on North Sixth Street in regard to a call about an unresponsive infant. Upon arriving at the address, first responders said they saw the father performing CPR on the child, who was face-up on a bed in the living room of the home, and took over performing lifesaving procedures.

Emergency medical personnel arrived a short while later but were not able to provide any assistance. Zane was pronounced dead at the scene and authorities contacted the Northumberland County Coroner’s Office as well as the county office of Children and Youth Services.

Both parents were reportedly transported to the police station, where they underwent interviews with detectives.

According to a report from PennLive, Usadel said that she laid down in bed at about 9:30 p.m. the previous evening with the baby. She was allegedly holding Zane in her right arm and breastfeeding him while using her left hand to hold her phone and scroll through her TikTok feed. At some point, she said she fell asleep and believed Zane rolled out of her arms and onto the bed. She said she awoke to find him unresponsive next to her on the bed.

Authorities on the scene reportedly said they observed a “large discoloration” on Zane’s forehead.

As the questioning continued, Usadel reportedly said that she normally puts Zane down in a “Pack ‘n Play,” but claimed it had not been set up on that evening.

Smart reportedly said he fell asleep in the same bed as Usadel and the baby at about 11 p.m., noting that Usadel typically performed the bedtime routine with Zane. When investigators asked about the baby not having a crib or bassinet, Smart allegedly responded, “They haven’t got around to it.” He allegedly added that Usadel tends to fall asleep with Zane in her arms.

Three other children were at the residence and authorities reportedly placed them in the care of Children and Youth Services. A search warrant was reportedly executed on the home that included items such as pillows, blankets, and clothing that could reveal additional evidence about Zane’s death.

Both parents were booked into the Northumberland County Jail. Usadel’s bond was set at $50,000 while Smart’s bond was set at $10,000.

A nurse at a county jail in Minnesota is facing a manslaughter charge nearly six years after an inmate under her care died in a case that’s already resulted in a $2.6 million lawsuit and a new law in the victim’s name to ensure something like that never happens again.

Michelle Rose Skroch, now 37, is facing charges of second-degree manslaughter culpable negligence and two counts of felony criminal neglect, one for “knowingly depriving” inmate Hardel Sherrell of medical care and the second for doing so for an “extended period of time.” A criminal complaint says the 27-year-old Sherrell was booked into the Beltrami County Jail on Aug. 24, 2018. While his blood pressure was high, he was otherwise in good condition in his initial health screening. He had a history of high blood pressure and a recent incident of respiratory failure, the complaint said.

More from Law&Crime: ‘The victim’s face is broken’: Patient viciously attacks nurse for no apparent reason, likely blinding her for life, cops say

Three days after arriving at the jail, Sherrell began complaining of chest pain and said his fingers on his left hand were tingly. Doctors performed an EKG and gave him ibuprofen, Tylenol and an anti-anxiety medication. Sherrell also stated he had stopped taking his blood pressure medication in January 2018.

Sherrell’s condition continued to worsen over the ensuing days and kept falling out of his bunk bed and was unable to stand up. He said he was unable to feel his legs. A nurse went to check on him on Aug. 31, 2018, and found him lying on a mat in his cell and not able to move. His mouth also was drooping and his speech was slurred.

A jail doctor opined that Sherrell may be suffering from Guillain-Barré Syndrome, a rare autoimmune disorder affecting the peripheral nervous system. Sherrell went to the hospital where an emergency room physician diagnosed him with “malingering and weakness” as he was able to move his legs. They sent him back to jail after an MRI found no abnormalities, the complaint said. The ER doc instructed him to return to the hospital if he had a fever, signs of stoke and/or worsening weakness.

Skroch, who worked for MEnD Correctional Care, LLC which was contracted to provide medical services at the jail, came to work on Sept. 1, 2018, and was advised about Sherrell’s condition. When she went to see him, she allegedly just stood at his cell door and “never conducted a standard, basic nursing assessment.” She told Sherrell to “get up and walk” and that “there was nothing wrong with him and he could get up and walk if he wanted to,” according to the complaint. Sherrell “pleaded” for medical attention but Skroch allegedly said she “would not bargain with him.”

The defendant never collected vital signs or other physical examinations despite him being unable to eat, drink or go to the bathroom on his own, cops allege. He fell out of his cot six times in two hours, per the complaint.

Skroch returned to work on Sept. 2, 2018, and found correctional officers trying to bathe him. Instead of helping, the nurse started “basically screaming at [Sherrell] telling him he’s faking” his illness, the complaint said. She did not take vital signs nor perform any medical or neurological assessments.

She reportedly told the jail doctor that Sherrell’s condition was slightly improved and he was doing better than the day before. Per the complaint, Skroch later that day noted that the inmate was sleeping “comfortably” and had “no distress in his breathing.” However surveillance video reportedly showed Sherrell taking rapid, shallow breaths, prosecutors wrote. She allegedly told jail guards that Sherrell was “perfectly fine.”

Correctional officers found Sherrell unresponsive around 4:46 p.m. and doctors pronounced him dead shortly thereafter. An autopsy determined he died of pneumonia and cerebral edema, which is swelling of brain tissue. A outside pathologist labeled the cause of death as complications from Guillain-Barré Syndrome.

More from Law&Crime: ‘It takes everything in me not to start s—‘: NICU nurse accused of breaking bones of premature infants denied release after text messages revealed

A correctional health expert who reviewed the case said Skroch failed at “the most basic nursing care” such as taking Sherrell’s vitals or other basic medical assessments. She had enough education and experience to know something was seriously wrong with the inmate, the expert reportedly determined.

“He concluded that ‘[t]he failure to obtain any vital signs on a critically ill patient over two days is such a tremendous breach in the standard of care that it is tantamount to an abandonment of the most basic professional responsibilities of a nurse,’” prosecutors wrote.

Had she treated the patient, he likely would have survived, according to medical experts.

Sherrell’s mother sued and won a $2.6 million settlement against the county and MEnD, according to the Minnesota Star Tribune. State lawmakers passed the “Hardel Sherrell Act” that gives the Department of Corrections more oversight over county jails, local NBC outlet KARE reported. Skroch’s nursing license has since been revoked, according to the TV station.

Cops arrested Skroch on Friday. She has a court date scheduled for April 11.

A death investigation and missing person case has been unfolding in Georgia that’s unlike anything local authorities have ever seen, with cops spending nearly a month looking for the fiance of a Spelman College instructor who was found dead and floating in a lake, along with her partner’s boat and shoes. The U.S. Secret Service has even been called in to assist, according to officials.

“There’s never been anybody looked for like this,” Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills told local Fox affiliate WAGA this week as police entered day 22 of looking for Gary Jones, husband of Joycelyn Wilson, at Lake Oconee — the last place they were seen alive together — in what officials have dubbed the largest search effort in county history.

Jones, who is believed to be dead, was boating with Wilson on Feb. 8 when they disappeared sometime that evening. His boat was found circling a portion of Lake Oconee with no one on board, roughly seven miles away from where he and Wilson were caught on video at a boat launch. Cops say they can be seen putting the vessel into the water together. Witness testimony and phone records show that whatever happened with the couple unfolded between 5:01 p.m. and 5:24 p.m., according to Sills.

“This is a huge area,” he told Fox and ABC affiliate WGXA last week. “Not to mention the cold weather and the cold water preventing normal surfacing. There is a Herculean effort going on here trying to locate his body.”

Asked why Wilson’s body would surface but not Jones, Sills said: “There was some air, and some water in her lungs. The crime lab pathologist has not rendered her final opinion yet.”

Authorities believe Wilson took several photographs with her phone before she died and went into the lake. Wilson’s phone was found in her hand when her body was found, according to police, but investigators have been unable to bypass a security code that’s keeping it locked — that’s where the Secret Service comes in.

Sills says agents have been trying to help unlock Wilson’s phone; investigators can look at its data and see a final photo was taken at 4:59 p.m. just before it lost connection and power. But they can’t view the image until the phone is unlocked.

“We don’t know what happened after that,” Sills told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Tuesday.

He said the Secret Service has struggled, as well, to open Wilson’s phone, so they’re now enlisting Georgia’s Department of Corrections to assist them with the investigation as DOC claims to have a machine that could possibly crack the security code. “We’re getting ready to take it to Forsyth (DOC headquarters) today,” Sills said.

More from Law&Crime: ‘If I can’t have her, nobody can’: Man stabbed ex-wife 95 times after learning she met someone new, claiming in court he ‘loved her very much’

The sheriff acknowledged that there have been rumors and theories going around about Wilson and Jones — regarding their relationship and plans to marry in a few weeks — but Sills declined to delve further.

“This is a death investigation,” Sills told WGXA after being asked about the possibility of an argument happening between the couple that led to a physical altercation. “We are investigating any aspect of that. Right now, I’m more convinced, unfortunately, Mr. Jones has drowned.”

Search efforts have been centered around a 200-acre triangular area at Lake Oconee, according to police. Activities have included the use of dogs and divers seeking to locate Jones’ body. On Monday, authorities suspended the water search until further notice.

“(Department of Natural Resources) officers and Putnam County Sheriff’s Deputies will continue to conduct daily shoreline searches and if weather conditions improve, search dogs will be deployed again in the near future,” Sills wrote in a Facebook post. “We have deployed aircraft, all available underwater technological devices, and professional divers in our efforts. I cannot remember such an extensive use of government and civilian personnel and resources for an incident such as this on Lakes Oconee and Sinclair in the last 40 years.”

News footage of Arabella Watts (left) and Jesse Kitson in court (KING).

A Washington couple who pleaded guilty to manslaughter following the accidental shooting death of their 1-year-old daughter were sentenced to prison time.

Jesse Kitson, 34, and Arabella Watts, 26, were charged in the death of their baby daughter, who was killed on Dec. 4, 2021, when an unsecured gun fell off a coffee table and fired. According to court documents obtained by local news outlet HeraldNet, Kitson was walking back and forth from the grill outside to the kitchen while Watts was on the couch inside checking her phone.

At the time, Kitson told police that he had left the gun on a shelf, but Watts said it was on the coffee table. While the exact details of the shooting were unclear, police believed that the baby pulled a coat off the table, causing the loaded gun to fall off and fire a round into the girl, killing her.

According to KING, a local NBC affiliate, Kitson and Watts both pleaded guilty to manslaughter, and Kitson pleaded guilty to unsafe storage of a firearm. Kitson was sentenced to five years and 10 months, plus 18 months of community custody. Watts was sentenced to five years and 10 months in prison.

Both parents were initially charged in January 2024 with first-degree manslaughter in a domestic violence context and pleaded not guilty.

Court documents revealed more details about the events of Dec. 4, 2021. Watts had arrived that evening at the home of Kitson with her daughter, who had been two weeks away from her first birthday, and 2-year-old son. Despite Kitson’s claim to police that he put his loaded, holstered gun on a shelf, documents stated that he told police that he put the gun on the coffee table in front of the sofa where Watts sat with the 1-year-old. While Watts was sending Facebook and text messages, Kitson was back and forth while he cooked dinner. Neither parent saw their daughter near the gun and only knew something happened once they heard the gun go off.

Watts called 911, and first responders performed lifesaving procedures on the girl for 10 minutes before declaring her dead at the scene. The medical examiner said the baby died from a “fatal through-and-through gunshot wound of the torso that entered the right hip[.]”

According to the police report, Watts reportedly said, “I knew that this could happen.” Watts also reportedly told police that she didn’t like being near the gun and that it scared her.

The body of a man who disappeared from a Colorado sober living home last month — with cops finding large amounts of blood strewn throughout the residence, sparking a search for him and another man who lived there — was found in a “wooded area” on Friday, prompting cops to charge the housemate with murder after he was caught on the run with a woman in Mississippi.

Johnny Rankin Morris, 46, has not only been charged with Stephen Walker’s murder in El Paso County but also a killing in Park County as well, according to local police officials. He was caught by cops in Pearl River County, Mississippi, on Dec. 30 for an unrelated crime and is now awaiting extradition on charges of first-degree murder, tampering with a deceased human body and tampering with physical evidence following the discovery of Walker’s remains.

Walker, 37, was reported missing by his family on Dec. 19, while Morris and an alleged acquaintance, Hailey Cole, also disappeared but were reported as “armed and dangerous” fugitives.

“From the onset of the missing person case on December 19, 2024, our investigative efforts have been ongoing and relentless, with cooperation and teamwork across numerous agencies,” the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said in a Jan. 3 press release. “During the investigation, information was developed which led investigators to a wooded location outside of El Paso County, where a deceased adult male was located. The body of the deceased individual was recovered and has since been positively identified as our missing person, 37-year-old Stephen Walker.”

On Dec. 19, deputies in El Paso County said they got a call that Thursday night to go to a home in the 1800 block of Pima Drive in the Cimarron Hills area. “While on scene, deputies observed large quantities of blood in multiple locations throughout the residence,” according to the sheriff’s office. Morris and Cole, 43, were reported as being “armed and dangerous.” Walker was said to be “missing under suspicious circumstances,” but only as a missing person.

“He doesn’t bother anybody,” Walker’s cousin, Leona Neely, told local CBS affiliate KKTV. “He really doesn’t. He’s a good person. I don’t see anybody wanting to hurt him.”

Walker’s family told KRDO that the home in the Dec. 19 incident was a sober-living home where he and Morris both lived. It’s unclear how Cole was connected to Morris.

Authorities in Park County got involved after being asked to perform a welfare check on a home at the 1500 block of Campfire Road. Timmy L. Huston, 65, was reportedly found dead inside, with Morris being charged with his and Walker’s murders after deputies found Walker’s car less than two miles away from Huston’s home while investigators were probing Hutson’s death.

Morris and Cole are both facing charges of first-degree murder, aggravated robbery, aggravated motor vehicle theft, tampering with evidence of felony crime and conspiracy. Morris is being held without bond.

Alberto Luperon contributed to this report.

Rynn Prairie-Rocca after his arrest in Pearce, Arizona (KTVK/KPHO/YouTube).

Cops in Arizona have arrested a man after a 75-year-old woman was kidnapped and her boyfriend was found dead in their home.

Deputies with the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office responded around 8:10 p.m. Friday to a report of a woman being kidnapped in Pearce, which is about 80 miles east-southeast of Tucson, according to a press release. The woman said she was in the workshop in the rear of her home around 3 p.m. Friday when a masked man rearing dark clothing came inside and pointed a gun at her.

More from Law&Crime: College students lured man to campus, falsely accused him of being a pedophile, then beat him in ‘To Catch a Predator’ TikTok trend: Cops

The woman told cops the man restrained her and placed a blindfold over her eyes. She subsequently heard several “loud noises” but wasn’t sure what was happening. Once night fell, the suspect moved the victim into her 2007 silver Chevrolet Avalanche and forced her into the back seat, cops wrote. Deputies say the suspect drove away from the home. Seeing an opportunity when the vehicle stopped, the woman broke out of her restraints and made a run for it.

She was able to run to a nearby home for help.

The woman told deputies the man had walked into a Dollar General and believed she was still inside when she was describing the horrifying ordeal to police. She then advised them to check on her boyfriend at her home. Deputies tried to contact anyone inside but received no answer. They forced their way into the home and found the boyfriend, a 67-year-old man, dead.

Meanwhile, cops were able to identify the suspect as 37-year-old Rynn Prairie-Rocca, who was tracked down and caught in the area of Catclaw Road and Highway 181. Prairie-Rocca barricaded himself for about 90 minutes before the cops were able to coax him out. They transported him to the Cochise County Jail. It’s not clear what charges he is facing.

Cops did not say if the incident was random or whether Prairie-Rocca had a connection to the victims. Deputies also did not publicly identify the victims or say how the male victim died. The incident remains under investigation.

A woman identified by law enforcement as Guadalupe Zavala Lopez walks into a gas station where an infant was later found dead in the bathroom. (Houston Police Department)

A 27-year-old woman in Texas will spend several years behind bars for leaving a dead infant inside of a gas station toilet in Houston last year. Harris County District Judge Kristin M. Guiney on Monday ordered Diana Guadalupe Zavala Lopez to serve four years in a state correctional facility after she pleaded guilty to one count of tampering with evidence — human corpse as well as one count of tampering/fabricating physical evidence with the intent to impede an investigation, court records reviewed by Law&Crime show.

Guiney also credited Zavala Lopez with 489 days of time already served.

As Law&Crime previously reported, agents with U.S. Customs and Border Protection apprehended Zavala Lopez in August 2023 at a bus station in Brownsville, Texas, which is the largest city in the U.S. portion of the Lower Rio Grande Valley.

In a news release, federal authorities described Zavala Lopez as a Mexican national and “migrant who overstayed her visitor visa and was successfully taken into custody.” The release goes on to describe her as “a homicide suspect attempting to flee to Mexico,” however, homicide charges were never filed against the defendant.

Following her arrest, a spokesperson for the Houston Police Department told Law&Crime that the agency would “likely interview her again to get more details” and stressed that the only charge was the one count of evidence tampering noted on the Twitter account — but that the investigation is currently ongoing.

“We still have to speak with her,” an HPD public information officer said. “Beyond that it depends on the rest of the investigation.”

She was subsequently charged with the additional evidence tampering charge.

According to a probable cause affidavit, a customer on April 2, 2023, went to use the restroom at a Shell gas station in southwest Houston in the middle of the night. There, they found the child inside the toilet. Houston Fire Department paramedics determined the girl had been dead for over an hour by that time.

Police then posted footage to the department’s YouTube page showing a “person of interest” — later determined to be Zavala Lopez — leaving the gas station before the newborn was found dead.

In the footage, which skips around and appears to be edited, the woman can be seen getting out of her car — which is parked at one of the pumps — and then walking through the front door of the filling station. The camera zooms in on her face as she enters the store. The footage then cuts to the same woman getting back in the car and driving away into the night. Finally, the video ends with three different still images of the wanted woman, taken from when she entered.

During a press conference announcing the efforts to obtain the public’s help in the case by releasing the video, HPD Homicide Detective Calab Bowling said the woman on the video was in the gas station for roughly 15 minutes before she left.

“No one else went inside that bathroom, and [the newborn] was not there when she walked in before,” Browning said, clarifying later that witness statements also supported that understanding of events. “It appears that she gave birth in the restroom.”

Authorities have not revealed the child’s name or cause of death.

Colin Kalmbacher contributed to this report.

Updated: A judge in Cook County, Illinois, has granted a temporary restraining order that prevents a now-ousted partner at Duane Morris from retrieving the remains of his wife after her body was found in a stairwell in his South Loop residential building last month.

The lawyer, Adam P. Beckerink, was blocked from receiving the remains in a Nov. 7 TRO sought by the parents of Beckerink’s deceased wife, 36-year-old Caitlin Tracey, report CWBChicago, the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times.

The parents alleged that Beckerink, a tax lawyer, had physically abused his wife, the articles report. The parents filed a separate action in Berrien County, Michigan, where Tracey had lived, that seeks authority to access her remains from the Cook County medical examiner and make funeral arrangements. A Michigan judge granted the request Tuesday.

Tracey’s body was found in a stairwell of Beckerink’s building in Chicago’s South Loop on Oct. 27. Her foot had been severed.

Beckerink was “swiftly removed” as a partner at Duane Morris, and he is no longer associated with the law firm, a firm spokesperson told the ABA Journal in a statement. Duane Morris was not previously aware of the domestic violence allegations, the statement said.

Two domestic violence charges are pending against Beckerink in Berrien County, according to the Chicago Tribune. He is also facing felony charges of resisting and obstructing arrest. He has not been charged with crimes related to his wife’s death.

Tracey had obtained an order of protection against Beckerink in Cook County in October 2023, but it was dismissed the following month after Tracey moved to vacate it, according to CWBChicago and the Chicago Tribune. In an affidavit supporting her bid for a protection order, Tracey said she filed two police reports for domestic battery against Beckerink in August and September 2023, the articles report.

The affidavit alleged that Beckerink physically abused her at a Ritz-Carlton hotel, at Beckerink’s South Loop residential building and at her Michigan home, according to CWBChicago and the Chicago Tribune. In one instance, she alleged, Beckerink struck her in the head with a pickle jar and poured vodka on her body, burning her wounds. In another, she alleged that Beckerink strangled her and slammed her head against a cabinet.

Tracey’s parents, Monica and Andrew Tracey, are represented by lawyer Andrew J. Cunniff of Galarnyk & Associates in the Cook County case and by Mowitt “Mitt” S. Drew III of Butzel Long in Michigan.

A lawyer for Beckerink, Todd Pugh, told the Chicago Tribune that there is no link between Beckerink and Tracey’s death.

“Caitlin was the love of Adam’s life, they’ve been married since April, her family has not had any contact with her in the several months since she married Adam,” Pugh said. “He wanted to include them in honoring her memory and wanted to do this at the funeral home that her family selected, but based on the filing that we just received, that wasn’t sufficient.”

Here is the full statement from Duane Morris to the Journal: “This is a shocking and tragic case, and we send our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Caitlin Tracey. Our firm was not aware of the domestic violence and other allegations against Adam Beckerink asserted in various legal proceedings until recent media accounts of her death. Once we confirmed key facts, the partners board swiftly removed Adam as a partner of Duane Morris LLP. He is no longer associated with our firm.

“This is a tragedy for all involved. Our deepest condolences go to Caitlin Tracey’s family. Counseling will be available for Chicago office employees this week.

“Out of respect for the legal process, it is not appropriate for the firm to speculate about the ongoing investigation, other than to say we hope justice will be served, and we stand ready to assist if we can be helpful to investigators.”

In a statement after the Michigan judge ruled for Tracey’s parents Tuesday, Drew said he and his clients are “incredibly grateful” for the expedited decision.

“The ruling allows Caitlin’s family not only to honor her life with the final services she deserves but also to grieve appropriately, supporting them in their journey through this difficult time,” Drew said.

Updated Nov. 12 at 11:35 a.m. to include information on the Michigan judge’s ruling and a statement by the parents’ attorney.

A suspected killer is behind bars in Texas after an alleged would-be murder target told police he pretended to be dead in order to save his own life.

Eiber Gabriel Sira-Vargas, 29, was arrested in connection with the July killing of 19-year-old Alexis Jose Vegas, who was found by a stretch of road with multiple gunshot wounds. According to San Antonio ABC affiliate KSAT, a passerby spotted Vegas’ body near a drainage ditch off a stretch of southbound U.S. Highway 281 at around 3:30 p.m. on July 1. Police found shell casings and zip ties near the victim’s body — but no clues as to who the killer was.

More from Law&Crime: Wife makes daring escape after husband kidnaps her at gunpoint, flees in vehicle with suspect on top of car: Police

Investigators got a break in the case, however, when they learned about an armed robbery that left a man shot, injured, and hospitalized just hours before Vegas’ body was found. Local CBS affiliate KENS reported that the man, who has not been publicly identified, was initially “not forthcoming” with police, according to the arrest affidavit.

But he later revealed that he was with Vegas when he was killed. He and the victim had been kidnapped by three armed suspects and forced into a vehicle, KENS reported.

“While in the suspect’s vehicle, Witness 1 indicated that the suspect in the front passenger seat aimed a firearm at him throughout the ordeal,” the affidavit says, according to the report. “He was able to describe the location where the suspect vehicle stopped, which matched the scene of the crime.”

The kidnappers eventually stopped the car and told Vegas and the man to get out of the car. At that point, the man told police, the suspects opened fire, striking both of them with bullets.

The man said that he pretended to be dead until the suspects left, KENS reported.

He was later able to identify Sira-Vargas from a photo lineup.

According to court records, Sira-Vargas is charged with aggravated kidnapping with a deadly weapon and capital murder by terroristic threat or other felony. He has a pre-indictment hearing scheduled for Jan. 29, 2025.

For around two weeks, Jazlynn Roush — a Las Vegas woman accused of killing her 68-year-old roommate with fentanyl-laced cocaine — allegedly went about her day with the slain sexagenarian’s body stowed away in her freezer, according to police.

It wasn’t until an office manager at the property where victim Monique Gilbertson’s mobile home was located began noticing things, such as Gilbertson’s car being parked differently and her dogs barking louder than normal, that Roush’s chilling secret was exposed, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department reports.

On Nov. 6, authorities got a call from the manager to perform a welfare check on Gilbertson after attempts to contact her were unsuccessful. She had been living with Roush — who was identified by cops as Daniel Roush, despite her legally changing her name in Nevada’s Eighth Judicial District in 2022 — after meeting her at a Home Depot and hiring her to do handy work, according to her arrest report, which was first obtained by the CBS affiliate KLAS and Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Police went to the 5500 block of Tres Piedras Road where the pair lived, about eight miles east of the Las Vegas strip, and tried knocking on the door to see if Gilbertson would answer, to no avail.

“Officers entered the home and located two individuals inside who could not provide officers with the location of the elderly female,” LVMPD officials said in a press release. “While officers searched the home they located a deceased female in a freezer. Both individuals were detained as investigators determined their involvement.”

Roush’s wife had been staying at the home on and off with her and Gilbertson, according to police, and was the other individual that officers encountered. In interviews, Roush admitted to finding Gilbertson dead roughly a week before Halloween and said the “elderly” woman had taken drugs, the arrest report said.

More from Law&Crime: Son allegedly kept long-dead father in unplugged freezer because every time he tried to dump him in desert there were ‘always people out there’

Feeling scared about what to do after Gilbertson’s death, Roush allegedly told police that she put her body in the freezer and went about her day. “I put her in the icebox, because I didn’t know what to do,” Roush allegedly said. “Until I could figure it out, I had her in the icebox.”

What Roush refused to tell police was that she had allegedly given Gilbertson cocaine laced with fentanyl, according to her criminal complaint, with prosecutors accusing her of “willfully, unlawfully, feloniously, and with malice” causing Gilbertson’s death. Law&Crime obtained the complaint on Wednesday afternoon.

Roush’s wife contacted police and told them she saw Roush give Gilbertson fentanyl-laced cocaine, according to the arrest report. Investigators believe Roush — who identifies as a “trans female just trying to find [her] place in this world” on Facebook — continued living inside the mobile home for about two weeks with the woman’s body in the freezer.

Gilbertson allegedly hated living with Roush, as she failed to take care of her things and constantly left drug paraphernalia out, their property manager, Demecia Lopez, told police.

Lopez said Gilbertson informed her “about how filthy Roush was” in the weeks leading up to her death, allegedly saying she was “upset” and had kicked Roush out, in addition to changing her locks.

On Oct. 22, Lopez said Gilbertson called 311 while she was with her to try and have Roush’s belongings removed, according to the arrest report, but she hung up after waiting on hold. That was allegedly the last time Lopez saw Gilbertson.

“I stayed calm you know, I didn’t trip out on her at all,” Roush told police about their living with Gilbertson, despite admitting to bouts of infighting and disputes over eating peanut butter, the Review-Journal reported.

During interviews, Roush’s wife repeatedly insisted that she had nothing to do with Gilbertson’s “murder,” the arrest report said. The woman told cops she allegedly saw Roush give Gilbertson a line of cocaine before she overdosed in front of them.

Coke, methamphetamine and fentanyl were all found at the mobile home when officers executed a warrant to search the residence.

Roush pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder on Wednesday and is due back in court on Nov. 28.
