Woman sentenced for murder of mummified 7-year-old daughter

A Georgia woman will spend the rest of her life behind bars for admittedly killing her 7-year-old disabled daughter and then allowing the child’s tiny body to mummify in a closet for months.

On Wednesday morning, Alondra Hobbs, 29, pleaded guilty to one count of malice murder, two counts of felony murder, and two counts of cruelty to children in the first degree.

Immediately following Hobbs’ guilty plea, DeKalb County Superior Court Judge LaTisha Dear Jackson sentenced her to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

“She does not want me to make excuses for what she’s done,” her defense attorney said during the sentencing portion of the hearing. “She does not want a trial. She wants to take responsibility. Something that she has not done … it is something she wishes to do now.”

In late June 2023, a call from a disconnected cellphone led DeKalb County Police Department offices to the long-dead and mummified body of Alivia Jordan. The girl was haphazardly hidden in the closet of unit 29 at the Hidden Valley Apartments on Misty Water Drive in Decatur — the DeKalb County seat and part of the greater Atlanta metro area.

“She looked like a real mummy,” a neighbor told Atlanta-based NBC affiliate WXIA at the time of the grim discovery. “You could tell it was a young girl by what she had on and by her hair.”

Five days later, Hobbs was charged with her daughter’s murder.

According to local jail records reviewed by Law&Crime, a woman named Alondra Denise Hobbs had been in and out of the DeKalb County lockup on numerous occasions in recent years. In August 2019, she was arrested on one count of simple assault. In May 2020, Hobbs was arrested on one count of battery with family violence.

In early July 2023, arrest warrants alleged Hobbs left her daughter alone, strapped into a stroller, “with no intention of returning.”

Authorities believe the child had been left alone, helpless, to die, sometime between Feb. 28, 2023, and June 25, 2023.

In the days that followed the grim discovery, neighbors suggested the defendant long had something sad on her mind, to the point of wanting to take her own life. Meanwhile, family members were struck by the news — long believing the girl had been in the care of relatives on her father’s side.

During a subsequent police interview, Hobbs would eventually admit her daughter was alive when she left her confined in the closet — saying she abandoned her because her life was “too much.” The defendant described Alivia as autistic; medical records showed the girl suffered from seizures related to cerebral palsy.

“This is a very tragic case. There are always options,” the judge said during the hearing. “There’s very rare cases where a murder case does not involve a weapon — a physical weapon — and sometimes hands are a physical weapon. And it’s difficult. How do you process that?”

In a presentation before the court, the district attorney’s office said evidence suggested Hobbs was largely remorseless. When the defendant was asked whether she wanted her daughter to have a funeral, she said she did not care because no one had ever helped raise her.

Additionally, Hobbs said “she did what she did to Alivia or she was going to kill herself,” a prosecutor told the judge.

In the aftermath of the child’s abandonment, the defendant continued to cash her daughter’s $900 monthly disability checks, the prosecutor said.

Then, once Alivia was gone, Hobbs began “dating immediately,” which quickly culminated in her being cheated on, the prosecutor added. That cheating experience, Hobbs would later tell investigators, was the worst day of her life.

The defendant’s own lawyer sought for his client — but did not receive — a sentence of life with the possibility of parole.

“She wants to atone for what she did,” the defense attorney said. “And she is seeking some mercy. Even with the tragic facts of this case — and they are, they’re beyond — a person who confesses, a person with remorse, a person who begs for mercy should find some in our system.”

In the end, mercy was not offered.

“Alivia Jordan did not deserve the slow, painful, and lonely death she suffered at the hands of her mother,” DeKalb County District Attorney Sherry Boston said in a press release. “I extend my deepest condolences to her family and I hope that they take some comfort in knowing Alondra Hobbs is being held accountable for her actions. I want parents to know that abandoning a child is never the right choice.”

Man pleads guilty to killing girlfriend’s toddler daughter

After a court tossed out the confession, a California man pleaded down from a murder charge to voluntary manslaughter for killing his then-girlfriend’s 1-year-old daughter. Derrick Dimone Woods, 47, was sentenced on Tuesday to 15 years and eight months in prison for killing Amanda Owens, 16 months, the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office announced.

He also pleaded guilty to physical child abuse for hurting and injuring Amanda’s 3-year-old brother, Elijah, and to false imprisonment by force or violence regarding both children.

“These were brutal and heinous crimes against vulnerable children, by a very disturbed man,” District Attorney Jeff Reisig said. “No amount of prison time will ever be enough in this case. We are heartbroken for the family.”

Prosecutors say that the siblings’ mother left them in Woods’ care at a motel in the city of West Sacramento on Feb. 15, 2021. She returned three hours later, only to find Woods running off into a getaway vehicle. He had left her children battered.

“Amanda was found on a bed inside the motel room, covered with a sheet, cold and not breathing,” prosecutors wrote. “Amanda’s face was swollen and covered in bruises. Elijah was sitting on a chair inside the room. Both his face and body were bruised, and he had red welts from being whipped with an electrical charging cord.”

Authorities found Woods the next day in nearby Sacramento. The defense argued he was incompetent to face trial due to an intellectual disability, and though the court restored him to competency, the judge also tossed his confession.

“In a pre-trial ruling, because of Woods’ intellectual disability and a prolonged delay between the arrest of Woods and the reading of Miranda warnings, Judge McAdam excluded Woods’ confession,” prosecutors wrote. “Despite the district attorney’s disagreement with the ruling, based on how the court interpreted the facts, a successful appeal was unlikely.”

The D.A.’s office highlighted statements from Amanda’s family at the sentencing.

“At yesterday’s sentencing hearing, multiple family members of Amanda and Elijah spoke to Judge McAdam,” prosecutors wrote. “They expressed their rage and devastation over the loss of Amanda and the injuries suffered by Elijah. The mother of the children told the court that the entire court experience has been incredibly traumatic, exhausting and emotionally draining. She stated, ‘Every life deserves to be valued and protected.””

Mom finds baby daughter, girl’s father after murder-suicide

A mom in St. Louis returning home from a trip to a beauty store reportedly walked into her apartment to find her 9-month-old daughter and the baby’s father both dead in a “senseless” murder-suicide, according to police and loved ones.

“It’s not something I can unsee,” Micah Lawery, mother of Ophelia Lawery-Daniels, told local CBS affiliate KSDK last week about walking in and discovering her daughter’s lifeless body next to the child’s father, Zacchaeus Daniels, 21, after he took Ophelia’s life and his own on Feb. 28, according to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department. Authorities announced Thursday that they were investigating the incident as a murder-suicide.

“Something that is burned into my brain,” Lawery said. “I don’t need to close my eyes to see it.”

The 23-year-old told KSDK that Daniels suffered from mental health problems, but was never known to be violent toward her, their daughter or anyone else. Police have yet to release a motive.

“I don’t know why,” Lawery said when asked what could have led Daniels to do something like this. “I’m pretty sure I’ll never know why, and with that, I’ll have to find closure in that.”

Describing Daniels, she told KSDK: “I try not to paint him in a bad light. Knowing that as a friend, he was a great friend. As a partner, a very loving and gentle partner to me. As a father, him trying his best and doing everything he can to be a good father.”

Being at the north St. Louis apartment that the family shared together is hard now, Lawery said, and each day since the tragedy has been a struggle.

“I describe it as like an eerie feeling, knowing that her life began here and it ended here as well,” she explained. “Clothes that she didn’t get to wear and toys that she didn’t get to play with and just the silence that now takes over the house. It’s so quiet, you could hear a pin drop.”

A family friend who launched a GoFundMe for Lawery last week described her daughter and what happened in the description, saying: “Our sweet angel baby’s life was taken in a senseless act of violence. Ophelia is the vibrant, happy, deeply loved daughter of Micah Lawery. In her short 9 months she quickly stole the hearts of her uncles, aunties, grandma, and everyone who met her. May her love for Mrs. Rachel and Reese’s peanut butter cups always live on.”

Woman married her dad to get his monthly VA benefits: Cops

An Indiana woman is facing charges of bigamy and falsifying a marriage license application after police say she tied the knot with her biological father — while already hitched to another man — in an attempt to get her dad’s $350 monthly payments from Veterans Affairs while he’s locked up in prison.

Kimberly Tempel, 44, of Tell City, allegedly lied on her application by saying she wasn’t already married and claiming that her “husband” was no closer than a second cousin, according to local ABC affiliate WPTA. In reality, Tempel filed for a marriage license to wed her biological dad, Bradly McCollom, 59, of Evansville, who is in prison on a probation violation. Police say she listed numerous inaccuracies on the application.

In addition to lying about who he was, Tempel claimed McCollom was not a convicted lifetime sex or violent offender — both untrue, according to police. He reportedly has a federal child porn charge on his record. Addresses that Tempel and McCollom listed were also false.

Charging documents and court records obtained by WPTA outline how Tempel was reportedly in the middle of a divorce when she and McCollom got married on July 26, 2024. McCollom’s sister allegedly told police that Tempel and McCollom had falsified a marriage license to get his $350 VA payments. McCollom has been locked up on a probation violation charge, but he’s due to get out this July.

McCollum’s sister allegedly provided documentation that provided information she obtained from a DNA service showing the probability of McCollum being Tempel’s biological father as “99.999999%,” WPTA reports.

Tempel was taken into custody on charges of providing false information on marriage license application and bigamy but has since been released. Local ABC affiliate WEHT reported Wednesday that “someone with knowledge of the case” contacted the outlet and claimed the accusations of Tempel being McCollom’s daughter were false. Documentation was sent by the person who appears to show a test from DNA Diagnostics Center claiming McCollom is not Tempel’s father, but WEHT has been unable to verify the claims as further tests are pending.

Dad who FaceTimed murder of daughter, 2, convicted

A Texas man will spend the rest of his life in prison after a jury took less than two hours to convict him for the murder of his 2-year-old daughter, in which he strangled her while FaceTiming her horrified mother and grandfather — all while on a high-speed chase with police.

Deontray Flanagan, 26, was convicted of capital murder in the 2023 death of Zevaya Marie Flanagan in Houston. The victim’s family was pleased with the verdict and had a message for Flanagan.

“You may have taken last breath, but you cannot kill her spirit, her memory, or her name,” her grandfather Curtis Watson told local CBS affiliate KHOU.

Flanagan’s apparent propensity for violence continued in the courtroom as he attacked a KHOU news camera, shoving it to the ground and injuring a photojournalist, before the verdict. Several court deputies tackled Flanagan to the ground to restrain him.

During the three-day trial, the jury saw a video of the girl’s mother, Kairsten Watson, watching her daughter die from the back of a police cruiser.

“Please stop – that is our daughter,” she pleaded in the video, according to a courtroom report from the Houston Chronicle.

She testified about how she felt helpless.

“There was nothing I could do about it,” she reportedly said.

As Law&Crime previously reported, Watson described the terrifying call in an interview with a local TV station in the days after the murder.

“Her face was just covered in blood,” she told Fox affiliate KRIV. “He hit her with something really hard, and then he called me on FaceTime, and he showed me. He choked her on FaceTime. I said, ‘Tray stop, that is your daughter, stop, she loves you.’ His exact words were you only love that man, you did this to her.”

At around 10 a.m. on March 20, 2023, Flanagan took his daughter out of day care and then barged into a nearby Walmart where Kairsten Martin worked, according to the Houston Police Department. There, the defendant confronted Watson and began threatening her – demanding her phone, passcodes, and other related information because he thought she was speaking with other men.

“Basically threatening to hurt the child if she did not turn those items over,” an HPD spokesperson said during a press conference after the incident. “She complied. She made an attempt to try and rescue her daughter from his stronghold. But she was unable to do so. At that point, we’re told, [Deontray Flanagan] struck her possibly a couple of times to the face and continued to flee the location.”

The defendant left with his daughter, his own phone, and Watson’s phone, police say. After that, law enforcement was contacted and quickly honed in on the location by tracking one of the phones.

A 45-minute-long chase ensued; spanning some 30 or so miles. Flanagan traveled the wrong way on some roads and slammed into other vehicles. Police say they finally caught up with the red Camaro and learned that Flanagan’s daughter was traveling without a seatbelt on — not that it mattered in the end.

While driving, Flanagan repeatedly contacted the girl’s mother via FaceTime – again demanding login information.

“I know in her mind she probably was just like ‘what did I do?’ Kairsten Watson told KHOU after the incident. “‘Why are you doing this to me for? Like I love you, why are you hurting me?’”

Curtis Watson told the TV station he had hopes that the terrifying incident would end peacefully.

“But then he showed me the lifeless corpse of my granddaughter,” Curtis Watson told KHOU. “I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. To have to go through that type of anguish and pain.”

Once the defendant’s car was stopped, police said, there was a 20-minute-long standoff. Then the SWAT team moved in.

Zevaya Flanagan required CPR, authorities said. Flanagan was unharmed. The girl was rushed to a nearby hospital in a helicopter. But it was too late, she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Man stabs girlfriend as victim’s daughter is home: Affidavit

A Florida man is accused of stabbing his girlfriend to death with a kitchen knife while the victim’s daughter was home and on the phone with 911.

Makinson Devalcin, 45, faces charges in the death of Enese Pierre, court documents said.

She was killed on Sunday. An affidavit outlines the allegations.

Deputies responded to a town house in Davenport on a stabbing call. The victim’s daughter said her stepfather was armed with a rifle and said her mother — later identified as Pierre — had been stabbed and bleeding, court documents said.

Deputies found the suspect at the top of a staircase, lying face down at the entrance of a bedroom. He had a cut on his neck and was unconscious but still showing signs of life and was hospitalized, the affidavit said.

In the bedroom on the bed, deputies found Pierre dead from a stab wound to her neck, covered in blood. A bloody knife lay on the floor, authorities said.

A roommate told deputies she heard screaming and woke up, went to the master bedroom, and saw the victim bleeding, but when the roommate tried to go inside, the defendant pushed her away, and she went back downstairs, investigators said.

The victim’s daughter said her mom came home around 1:40 a.m. and told her goodnight. Later, she said she heard her mom yelling, “Help! He is trying to kill me,” the affidavit said.

She got up from bed and exited her room, walking toward her mom’s room. As she neared the master bedroom, she could hear her mom yelling for help, according to court documents.

As she got near the room, she could see her mom was injured and bleeding. Her mom told her to call 911, the documents said.

When she returned to her mom’s room, she said there was more blood on the bed around her mom, and her mom was no longer speaking, the affidavit said.

She said her stepfather got up from the bed, grabbed a knife and said, “no one messes with me,” according to the document.

The knife found in the bedroom appeared to belong in the kitchen, as the sheath for this knife was in a kitchen drawer, investigators added.

The affidavit does not say when or how the defendant was cut and wounded.

He was being held without bail.

Florida mom allegedly murdered diabetic daughter in bathtub

A Florida mom who was arrested after her 14-year-old daughter was found dead in a bathtub has been charged with her murder.

Kelsey Glover, 35, is being held at the Osceola County Jail without bail after being charged with the premeditated murder of her daughter Giselle. As Law&Crime previously reported, Glover was originally charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and battery after allegedly attacking her roommate.

New details from Glover’s arrest warrant revealed more of what happened to her daughter on the day she died.

The warrant containing the murder charge cited sworn testimony by Glover’s roommate, who revealed that Giselle had been living with Type 1 diabetes and received her medication through an insulin pump. According to the roommate, Glover took her daughter off the pump on Nov. 18, after which Giselle “became sick, vomiting, and eventually bedridden.” The statement added that during the days that followed, Glover kept her daughter “in the master bedroom with music playing to drown out her screams for help.”

On Nov. 20, the roommate stated that around 8 a.m., Glover asked her to help her bathe Giselle. After the roommate carried Giselle into the bathroom and placed her in the tub, Glover reportedly “started to submerge [her] head underneath the bath water,” which prompted the alleged fight between Glover and her roommate.

As the roommate tried to save Giselle’s life, Glover apparently left to find the hammer she allegedly threatened to kill her with. She barricaded herself in the bathroom with Giselle while she called 911.

Previous filings stated that when police arrived at the scene, they observed “several holes in the door that were consistent with the hammer striking the door.”

Giselle’s father, DJ Glover, was in another state at the time of his daughter’s death. He started a GoFundMe page to raise money for the girl’s funeral, a goal that has already been surpassed.

On the page, he memorialized his daughter.

“I have never met a girl as intelligent as you,” he wrote. “The way you used those big words, always leaving us to Google them, filled us with awe. We never knew where you picked up such an incredible vocabulary, but it made us proud every single time. You were more than just smart, though you were beautiful, inside and out. Your soul was pure, and your heart was full of love.”

“There’s so much I’ll never get to do with you, things I had dreamed of like buying your first car, spending my whole check on your prom dress, walking you down the aisle, and sharing that first father-daughter dance,” he also wrote. “But I hold tight to the memories we did make, and I take comfort in knowing you were loved beyond measure.”

Mom tried to kill daughter by throwing her down stairs: Cops

A 42-year-old mother in Michigan has been arrested for allegedly biting her own daughter on the neck and strangling the child before throwing her headfirst down a flight of stairs.

Jennifer Lynn Vargas was taken into custody earlier this month and charged with one count of assault with intent to murder and one count of first-degree child abuse, court records reviewed by Law&Crime show. Both charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison.

The incident took place just a few minutes before midnight on Nov. 8, 2024, inside Vargas’ home in Blair Township, according to a report from MLive. Blair Township is about 160 miles northwest of Lansing.

Per the report, troopers with the Michigan State Police responded to the home where they made contact with Vargas and the victim, who were outside in the driveway. Investigators then interviewed the two individuals separately.

The victim’s name and age have not been released, but police did clarify that she is Vargas’ daughter.

The victim reportedly told authorities that Vargas attacked her, hitting her several times, strangling her, and then throwing her down a flight of stairs.

Authorities reportedly noted that the victim had at least one visible bite mark as well as a cut on her hand which she claimed was the result of her and Vargas struggling over a knife.

In addition to her visible injuries, the victim also reportedly said that she lost consciousness multiple times due to being strangled by Vargas.

Emergency medical personnel transported the victim to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City for treatment while Vargas was taken into custody.

Court documents obtained by Traverse City NBC affiliate WPBN provided additional details about the alleged attack.

The victim reportedly told authorities that Vargas physically assaulted her for over an hour. During the attack, the victim said Vargas strangled her and slammed her head into the floor before finally tossing her down the stairs headfirst, court documents reportedly said.

After being thrown down the stairs, the victim reportedly said that she pretended to be unconscious. When Vargas turned away, the victim reportedly said she ran to a nearby bedroom and locked the door.

As the victim attempted to escape the home through a window, Vargas allegedly broke through the locked door, held her down on the bed, and strangled her again. While strangling the victim, Vargas allegedly told the victim “she was going to be sacrificed.”

Vargas is currently being held in the Grand Traverse County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bond. A judge ordered her to have no contact with the victim and to stay at least 500 yards away from her.

Vargas is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing at 11 a.m. on Dec. 2.

Father killed roommate for drugging and abusing his daughter

A Nebraska man called the police to report he shot and killed his roommate, whom he accused of abusing his adult daughter and giving her drugs.

Rodolfo Cateura Nogueras, 40, pleaded no contest in Colfax County District Court to second-degree murder in the death of Ariel Varella Herrera, 45, and second-degree assault in the nonfatal shooting of a neighbor, court documents said.

An affidavit lays out the case that came to light on April 7 at 11:29 p.m. when a call came into Colfax County dispatch.

The Spanish-speaking caller, later identified as Cateura Nogueras, said he had a 20-year-old daughter living with him and a roommate, and the roommate was giving his daughter drugs and abusing her, the affidavit said.

“I’m not calling you to turn him in, I’m calling to tell you I shot him in the head, and I killed him,” he said.

He told the dispatcher where the shooting happened, at a storage facility in Schuyler, about 70 miles west of Omaha. He said he wanted to speak with an officer in person at a local truck stop, but he did not meet up with an officer that night.

At the storage facility, police found blood on the ground and a .22 shell casing outside unit #23. Inside, a sergeant saw blood and another spent .22 caliber shell casing. Authorities found the victim’s body under black plastic tarps in the back of the unit.

Video surveillance footage from a neighboring business showed multiple people in Varela Herrera’s Dodge Caravan coming to the storage unit at 9:33 a.m. After that, the individuals are seen going in and out of storage unit #23 and back into the van.

One man is seen outside the van, looking around, and then going into storage unit #23, which continues throughout the day until 7:52 p.m., when the van leaves. The van then returns at 10:19 p.m. Video shows multiple flashes of light in the van with multiple people inside. Twenty minutes later, a man who appears to be bleeding is seen running from the storage unit.

That man sought treatment at a hospital for a gunshot wound and identified Cateura Nogueras as the person who shot him. During the police interview, the wounded man said he didn’t know where Varella Herrera was.

“He said he was worried about Varella Herrera because Cateura Nogueras told him that Varella Herrera was ‘tied up,”” the affidavit said.

The surviving victim also told police he believed that Cateura Nogueras tried to kill him, shooting him twice — one bullet knocking out a tooth later found on the floor of the storage unit and another that grazed his face and went through his arm, court documents said.

Police tracked down Cateura Nogueras through his cellphone in the early morning hours of April 8 in Missouri. A Buchanan, Missouri, deputy located a Pontiac G-6 parked in a general store parking lot where his phone was pinging. His daughter was with him. Deputies found a .22 caliber Phoenix Arms handgun in the vehicle, court documents said.

Cateura-Nogueras is set to be sentenced on Jan. 22.

Mom arrested after forming ‘suicide pact’ with daughter

A Mississippi mother and her 10-year-old daughter allegedly formed a “suicide pact” and decided to take several pills. But only the girl followed through, police say. And it nearly cost the girl her life. Now the mother, Brittney Leigh Hensley, is behind bars. She’s charged with aggravated child abuse.

The Ocean Springs Police Department responded shortly before 6:30 p.m. on July 6 for an unresponsive child call at the extended stay Studio 6 motel. Hensley, 37, and her daughter had been living there. When first responders arrived, they found the girl unresponsive near several unknown pill capsules and empty prescription medication bottles in a green backpack, a press release said. The medication was prescribed to Hensley, police say.

Paramedics rushed the girl to a hospital where she was intubated. She was then flown to another hospital. At some point, the girl woke up and told police she and her mother entered a pact and she took a lot of pills.

“She had this suicide pact with her daughter, and the daughter took the pills, but (Hensley) didn’t,” Ocean Springs Police Chief Ryan Lemaire told the Biloxi Sun Herald. “So, the momma started freaking out when her daughter wouldn’t wake up.”

The girl remains under the care and custody of Mississippi Child Protective Services. Her recovery is ongoing.

Hensley was set to meet with police detectives and CPS investigators but she fled to Alabama. Police obtained a warrant for Hensley’s arrest in September. On Oct. 15, the Mississippi Coast Crime Stoppers announced her arrest by the Huntsville (Alabama) Police Department. She has since been extradited back to the Jackson County Jail where she remains on a $500,000 bond. It is unclear if she has a lawyer.
