A Texas funeral home recently went viral for all the wrong reasons when an angry family member of a decedent filmed the conditions inside.

Richardson Mortuary in Houston, Texas became the target of a new investigation by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office after a video posted to social media showing several apparently neglected bodies spread like wildfire. KTRK, a local ABC affiliate, reported that once the video was posted by a family member of one of the deceased, several other family members arrived at the scene, worried about their loved ones inside.

One woman reportedly recognized her own grandmother, whom she told KTRK was “supposed to be cremated already.”

But the situation became even more chaotic when the man filming the video was confronted by an employee of the mortuary – who allegedly stabbed the customer.

Local Fox affiliate KRIV spoke to the alleged victim, who told the station at the scene that he was taking himself to the hospital. Police told KRIV that he had only suffered a “superficial” wound to the stomach, and that the employee might have been acting in self-defense. An investigation into the stabbing was ongoing.

Neither the alleged victim nor the employee were named, but the alleged victim’s sister spoke to several outlets including KTRK about the conditions inside Richardson Mortuary. Tamara McGruder and her brother, who shot the viral video, had gone to the funeral home wanting to check on the status of their mother and uncle.

When they arrived, they witnessed several of the dead being stored wantonly around the building, which was apparently undergoing construction. None of the rooms, including where bodies were being kept, had functioning air conditioning. Some of the bodies were out in the open, some in caskets or plastic body bags.

McGruder told KTRK, “It’s bodies in caskets, boxes, plastic bags. Its no A/C, its gnats. It smells like rotten blood.” She said that when she found her mother’s casket, “she had gnats in her face.”

Murita Brown was one of the family members who recognized her grandmother’s burial outfit in the video. She told KTRK, “I saw a lady in purple in the same suit as my grandmother, so I said, ‘Wait a minute, that look like my grand momma.””

She added that her grandmother was supposed to have been cremated last month, saying, “This was March the 21st and she was supposed to be cremated already, and we been waiting on her ashes and nothing having been happening.”

Demtrious Riley-Sylvester told KRIV that the mortuary told her family that her brother’s remains had been cremated, but found that was not the truth. She said, “It’s like some trash or a dog. Just throw him away like he’s trash, and she had me believing. We were just waiting on them to bring the ashes.”

Harris County Precinct 7 Constable Smokie Phillips told KTRK that he knew the business owner personally and told the station that he was currently in the hospital after having a heart attack. Phillips confirmed to the station that the owner allowed the bodies to be brought to other funeral homes.

Richardson Mortuary has reportedly been the subject of 14 complaints over the last 10 years.

As Jack Newton, the CEO and founder of Clio, a legal technology company, took the stage for his keynote address Monday at the 12th annual Clio Cloud Conference, happening this year in Austin, Texas, he was in a reflective mood.

The company has come a long way since it debuted at the ABA Techshow in 2008 and hosted its early Clio Cloud Conferences at the Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel in Chicago. For the longest time, the Vancouver, British Columbia-based company was content to market its practice management software primarily to small law firm and solo practice lawyers in the United States and Canada.

Today, the company is worth $3 billion and has expanded to the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand while sponsoring an NHL team and packing convention centers for its annual conferences.

According to Clio officials, they hope to get even bigger in the coming years.

With the newly announced generative artificial intelligence productivity assistant Clio Duo leading the way, the company now boasts a suite of products aimed at helping lawyers with tasks including billing, accounting and client intake.

The goal is to dramatically expand its presence in the world of mid-market firms while establishing itself in more countries.

Ronnie Gurion, the chief operating officer at Clio, says the company is looking to be a global brand and already has relationships with consultants, lawyers and firms in nearly 130 countries in addition to the ones in which they already have a significant presence.

“We’ve really honed our go-to-market strategy over the last couple of years,” says Gurion, who joined Clio in 2021 after working in various executive roles for Expedia, Orbitz, Airbnb and Uber. “We expect to supercharge that now.”

Citing the findings in the company’s latest Legal Trends Report, Gurion points out that lawyers are leaving billions of dollars on the table, and that even the slightest bit of help could make a huge difference in terms of increasing productivity and bringing in more money.

“The rate of adoption of AI has been mind-blowing and exciting,” Gurion says. “Even a few minutes of savings can go a long way.”

Gurion acknowledges that the midsize firm market is wide, vast and diverse, with different needs and pain points compared to solos and small firms. Nevertheless, he asserts that Clio, which defines midsize firms as having between 20 to 200 lawyers, is well-positioned to serve them, pointing to the company’s emphasis on customer service and customization options.

To help the company realize its expansion goals, Clio, which is also an advertiser with the ABA Journal, plans to aggressively hire sales people, according to Jenny Dingus, senior vice president of global sales at Clio. Despite its plans to expand, Dingus says the company will maintain its focused, specialized mindset and hopes to use that to help Clio enter new markets.

“At our core, we are a legal tech company,” says Dingus, who spent 10 years at RingCentral, a cloud-based communication platform, before joining Clio in 2022. “All we do is support legal professionals and their needs.”

And as those needs expand, Clio plans to accommodate them. According to Jonathan Watson, the chief technology officer at Clio, Clio Duo does not yet have legal research and writing capabilities, nor is it capable of analyzing a firm’s past matters to help guide decision making on fees, billing rates, budgeting and internal strategy—but those options are on the horizon.

“Like any growth stage company, we have to think how our culture will evolve over time,” says Watson, who joined Clio in 2017 after working as director of engineering at Shopify. “But we’ll always remain focused on customer success.”

Citing the arrest affidavit, local NBC affiliate WMC reported how the alleged assault escalated on Sept. 13 at Luv My Hair Salon in Memphis.

A woman paid a $50 deposit and $410 through Zelle at the salon, the outlet reported. But before the appointment ended, the hairstylist allegedly demanded $50 more.

When the customer questioned the amount, Ray “became irate and began cursing and yelling,” the network reported, citing the affidavit.

“Don’t move, because I got these scissors next to your face,” the defendant allegedly told the customer at one point and, “B—-, you not going nowhere until you pay me,” WMC reported.

Ray allegedly locked the door and blocked the customer’s path, The Charlotte Observer reported, citing the affidavit.

The customer managed to call the police, and she was ultimately let go. Ray was booked into the Shelby County Jail on Wednesday. She was released after posting $7,500 bail, online jail records show. She’s set to appear in court on Oct. 14.
