Left: The scene of the fatal accident in St. Petersburg, Florida. Right: Kyle Hill ((St. Petersburg Police Department).

A 33-year-old Florida man accused of killing a woman and severely injuring her boyfriend by drunkenly ramming their car off the road because he mistakenly believed his ex-girlfriend was in the vehicle told a judge on Thursday that he didn’t remember “anything” about the incident.

The apparent case of amnesia came up during Kyle Hill’s first virtual appearance in the Sixth Judicial Circuit Court on Thursday.

Hill told Circuit Judge Philip Federico that he no memory of allegedly sending 35-year-old Norbelis Figueredo-Campos, and his girlfriend, 28-year-old Arislenni Blanco-Medina, off the road and right into a concrete pole. The pole then fell atop the couple’s car, killing Blanco-Medina and seriously injuring Figueredo-Campos.

During the hearing, Hill claimed he was unable to answer questions from the court, according to courtroom footage obtained by Tampa NBC affiliate WFLA.

“Apparently, your car is not in good shape after the accident situation, was that paid off?” Federico asked, referring to Hill’s pickup truck that was upside-down following the crash.

“I don’t remember anything, sir,” Hill responded.

As previously reported by Law&Crime, police say that after Hill and his ex-girlfriend had an argument Sunday night, she hopped in a car and left with a friend.

Hill then allegedly jumped in his own vehicle and drove south on 34th Street near 30th Avenue North in St. Petersburg in search of her. Hill then spotted a Honda which he thought she was riding in and allegedly proceeded to “aggressively” chase and harass the Honda for several blocks, police said.

“While chasing a car, he called her again and said, ‘I got you. I’m going to kill you, your friend and myself,’” Chief Anthony Holloway told reporters at a press conference. “But it gets worse from there. The car that he was chasing was not his girlfriend’s car.”

Actually inside the Honda were the victims, both of whom were recent immigrants from Cuba and were on their way to a local Walmart. Police allege Hill forced the Honda off the road and over the sidewalk near 17th Avenue North, where it smacked into a concrete pole, which fell and crushed the car. Blanco-Medina died while Figueredo-Campos suffered serious injuries, including a broken femur and two broken ankles.

Hill lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a tree in the median, police said. In addition to him traveling 60 mph in a 35 mph zone, Hill’s blood alcohol level was 0.185, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08, according to police. Initially charged with DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide, he now stands accused of first-degree murder and attempted murder.

“He used his car as a weapon,” Holloway said.

Figueredo-Campos immigrated from Cuba and had been in the U.S. for about a year and a half, while his girlfriend arrived a few months ago. Blanco-Medina was talking on the phone with her father and 9-year-old daughter during the incident and told them she feared for her life. Her family members heard the crash.

The victims’ families spoke at the press conference about the excitement Figueredo-Campos had when his girlfriend joined him in the U.S.

“His dream, obviously, was to bring his girlfriend, his partner, here with him so she could provide for her daughter and her parents in Cuba,” his aunt said in Spanish. “They were very ambitious when they got here.

Nicole Galvan, Figueredo-Campos’ cousin, described her as always happy and never dull.

“You would go to her house, and you would always hear music, and she would always be dancing,” she said. “Her and her boyfriend would always have music and always just bring a brighter and more positive vibe to anyone who was dealing with anything around them. They never had problems with anybody, not a single soul.”

A Florida couple is behind bars after they allegedly lured a teenage girl they met online to their home, tortured and suffocated her to death over a piece of missing jewelry, and dismembered her body before disposing of her remains in a dumpster.

Steven Gress, 35, and his girlfriend Michell Brandes, 37, stand accused of first-degree murder and kidnapping in the death of 16-year-old Miranda Corsette. The St. Petersburg Police Department said in a press release Friday that Gress picked up the girl on Feb. 14 after meeting her on a dating app and took her to his home in the 2700 block of 27th Ave. N. After hanging out that day, he drove her back to her home. Miranda returned to his home the next day, but this time she would not make it out alive.

More from Law&Crime: ‘F— you, he is not going to bite me’: Boyfriend ‘jealous’ of 5-year-old getting ‘too much attention’ beat him to death for being ‘disrespectful,’ police say

St. Petersburg police Chief Anthony Holloway told reporters at a press conference that there was a dispute over some missing jewelry on Feb. 20. Gress and Brandes allegedly assaulted and tortured Miranda for the next week.

“Repeatedly beat the victim, while holding her captive for seven days and eventually suffocating her by wrapping plastic wrap around her face,” a judge said during Gress’ first appearance, according to local NBC affiliate WFLA.

Gress and Brandes then put the teen’s body in his car and drove the remains some 15 miles to a home in the 12000 block of Mallory Drive in Largo. There, police believe she was dismembered. Her remains were once again moved, this time to a dumpster about 55 miles away across Tampa Bay. Cops have located the dumpster, however the remains were disposed into a Hillsborough County landfill. Cops are continuing to search for Miranda’s body.

Miranda’s grandmother, who had custody of her after both of her parents died, reported her missing to Gulfport police on Feb. 24. Gulfport police commander and acting chief Mary Farrand said her department is “very familiar” with Miranda, who is a “frequent runaway” with a history of mental health issues and drug abuse. She also was the mother of a 11-month-old child. Her grandma told police Miranda was known to run away and she’d usually return home, but not this time.

On Thursday, a “witness” contacted police regarding information about a kidnapping and homicide. Police realized they already had Gress in custody after he allegedly pointed a harpoon at Brandes and was in possession of drugs. Detectives quickly unfurled the horrific case. Brandes turned herself into cops on Saturday.

Gress was quite chatty during his first appearance.

After the judge read the allegations against him, he reportedly told the court, “They just said I suffocated,” before a public defender quickly intervened and ordered him to “not say anymore!”

Gress also questioned the court about the whereabouts of Brandes.

“Where is Michelle Brandes at?” Gress asked twice, video from local Fox affiliate WTVT showed.

“Talk to your lawyer,” the judge sternly advised Gress before ending the hearing.

Both Gress and Brandes are being held at the Pinellas County Jail without bond.

The Sevierville Police Department in Sevierville, Tenn. (Google Maps).

An Alabama couple lost custody of their two children for over nine months after they were accused of driving while intoxicated — but there was no evidence that the one behind the wheel was ever intoxicated.

In a lawsuit filed on Feb. 25, Nicholas and Elizabeth Frye stated that they took a vacation with their two small children in Tennessee in February 2024. While at the resort where they were staying, Elizabeth Frye slipped and sustained a minor injury, and Nicholas Frye took the family to a nearby Walmart store for medical supplies. Upon completing their Walmart run and driving back, Nicholas Frye was pulled over by an officer “without reasonable suspicion or probable cause” and accused of DUI. Elizabeth Frye was also arrested, and both were charged with “DUI, public intoxication, child abuse and neglect, and aggravated child abuse and neglect.”

But there was no immediate evidence that either parent was under the influence — and Nicholas Frye’s blood tests later showed an “absence of drugs and alcohol at the time of the arrest.”

The lawsuit, filed in Tennessee’s Eastern District Court, named the City of Sevierville, the Sevierville Police Department, and three Sevierville police officers, including Officer Laura Franklin, who pulled Nicholas Frye over on Feb. 24, 2024. Also named in the suit were the State of Tennessee and the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services and an unnamed official who worked for the agency.

After the Frye parents were arrested, their two children were taken to the Sevierville Police Department, where they remained until their grandmother (who was not named) came from Alabama to pick them up. The Tennessee Department of Children’s Services was notified that the children’s parents were arrested and charged, and the Alabama Department of Human Resources removed the children from the Fryes’ custody.

Elizabeth and Nicholas Frye did not regain custody of their children for over nine months.

The lawsuit stated that there was never any evidence that either parent was under the influence. The Fryes also claimed that the Sevierville Police Department did not perform any “immediate” testing at the time of the arrests that would have proven the absence of any intoxication and provided probable cause for a DUI arrest. Instead, Nicholas Frye underwent blood testing that provided results at a later time. The lawsuit made no mention of whether or not Elizabeth Frye underwent any testing for intoxication.

The Fryes contended that they were arrested “without proper evidentiary basis,” and this resulted in the removal of their children from their custody for nearly a whole year.

The Fryes are claiming that they and their children have suffered “irreparable, permanent, and significant mental and emotional anguish” as well as “deleterious effects to their reputations” and their standing in the community. They are seeking damages of just under $15 million.

Local news outlet Al.com reached out to the City of Sevierville for comment, and a spokesperson said that the city “does not generally comment in regard to ongoing litigation.”

A Michigan man will spend significant time behind bars after his three dogs mauled and killed a father of six last year.

On Jan. 29, 2024, Harold Phillips, 35, went to the mall to buy new clothes for a job interview. After shopping, while walking back from the bus stop, a bulldog, a Staffordshire bull terrier, and an American Staffordshire terrier viciously attacked him — less than a mile away from home. Phillips succumbed to his wounds on Feb. 2, 2024.

Roy Eric Goodman, 41, and Trevina Quiche Goodman, 39, were charged with possession of a dangerous animal causing death. The husband and wife eventually pleaded no contest to the charges.

On Friday, the pair were sentenced, according to The Detroit News. Roy Goodman will spend between 30 months and 15 years in state prison. Trevina Goodman received a more lenient sentence of three years on probation. The wife could, however, be incarcerated for 18 months to 15 years if she violates the terms of her probation, Wayne County Assistant Prosecutor Maria Miller told the newspaper.

“To the Phillips family, I’m so sorry,” Roy Good said, turning to address the Phillips family during his sentencing hearing, according to a courtroom report by The Associated Press. “I wish it wouldn’t have happened. I’m so sorry.”

As it turned out, on the day in question, the trio escaped through an unlocked front gate at the Goodman home on Detroit’s west side.

The husband would tell animal control officers that he let the dogs outside in his own yard and then went back in the house to get something — but returned to find them gone, according to a report obtained by the Detroit News. In fact, Roy Goodman said he hoped the dogs never did return — but went out to look for them anyway.

Then, hearing someone cry out for help, Roy Goodman knew he found the creatures he didn’t even really want. And, “thinking it was his dogs attacking someone,” he grabbed his car keys and drove toward the shouts of pain. At the scene, he corralled the dogs and called 911 for the victim.

The dogs were then turned over to authorities and euthanized.

The incident occurred near the corner of Longacre Street and West Chicago Road. Initially, Phillips’ injuries were so extreme that, in an effort to save his life, doctors amputated one of his arms.

Days later, the beloved father was dead.

“It’s with deep sadness that I announce Harold’s passing,” Shauntaye Phillips said in a statement provided to CBS News. “It’s painful to think of all the important milestones Harold will miss in our children’s lives, from our son’s first basketball game this weekend to our daughter’s upcoming daddy-daughter dance that he was looking forward to. Our lives will never be the same. We are forever grateful for our community’s prayers, donations and support you’ve given our family.”

The grieving widow did not make a statement directly regarding the sentencing — and will not make one, according to her attorney.

“In light of the sentencing today of Roy and Trevina Goodman for the dog attack that killed Harold, the Phillips family would like to express their gratitude to the community for their support, prayers and donations and overall support of the Phillips fam during this difficult time,” attorney Paul Huebner told the Detroit News. “The kindness has meant the world to them. They sincerely hope this tragedy serves as a reminder for pet owners to take better care of their animals.”

The Phillips family has also filed a lawsuit against Detroit’s animal control agency and the former director — alleging that prior warnings about the dogs were effectively ignored.

“While animal lives were being spared, dangerous animals remained an unaddressed and ever-present threat to the safety and lives of people within the City of Detroit,” the lawsuit reads.

A GoFundMe is currently soliciting donations to help the Phillips family overcome the financial hardship that exacerbated the unquantifiable loss of a husband and father.

A couple in California is accused of abusing, torturing and murdering their adopted son, with the 10-year-old being rushed to a hospital “in medical distress” before dying several hours later, according to cops.

Alejandra Marin, 51, and Juan Sanchez Moreno, 59, have been arrested on felony murder and torture charges, including one count of willfully causing or permitting harm to a child, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office. The couple was booked on Friday, Nov. 22, following an investigation by the department’s Central Homicide Unit and Special Victims Unit.

On Nov. 21, deputies responded to a call of a 10-year-old boy “in medical distress” at a home in the 13000 block of Malibu Court, Moreno Valley, per an RCSO press release. Authorities found the child and rushed him to a local hospital, where he was stabilized.

“Several hours later, the juvenile’s health declined, and he was pronounced deceased at the hospital,” the sheriff’s office said. “Based on the circumstances, the Riverside Sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit was requested to respond and assumed the investigation.”

The circumstances, according to cops, included visible signs of neglect and abuse documented by SVU and the sheriff office’s Central Homicide Unit. It’s unclear how the couple tortured the boy.

More from Law&Crime: Adopted 13-year-old kept in camper without electricity, forced to use ‘grocery style bags’ as toilet: Police

“Through the joint investigation … the juvenile’s adopted parents, identified as 51-year-old Alejandra Marin and 59-year-old Juan Sanchez Moreno … were arrested for murder, torture, and child abuse,” the sheriff’s office said.

The couple was being held at the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside on Sunday without bail, according to jail records. Marin is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, while Moreno’s case records have not been made public yet.

A Texas couple never thought their summertime date would end with a trip to the local burn unit — and now they’re suing the bar that they say left them horrifically scarred.

Abigael “Abbi” Hance-Briscoe and Dustin “Dutty” Johnson visited the Twisted Trick bar in August and told local ABC affiliate WFAA in an interview that they wanted to support the new venue. They each ordered drinks, and when Johnson’s “Flaming Pineapple” arrived, he saw that there was a lime garnish at the top of the glass — and it was on fire.

He told WFAA that “[w]e’ve been to Tiki bars before, and so when it came out, I understood what was going to happen. They would do a little show, like a flash of fire, and then I’d drink it. I was like, oh, cute. Cool. It’s on fire.”

Dustin “Dutty” Johnson and Abigael “Abbi” Hance-Briscoe (GoFundMe)

Johnson said that the bartender offered to add more Everclear liquor to the combustible drink. After the extra pour, the bartender reportedly fired up the bar torch and the “drink ignited, shattering the drink glass, and spreading the fire onto Abigael and Dustin,” according to the lawsuit.

As he told WFAA, Johnson said that he ran out of the bar while “his shirt, face, arms, beard, and chest hair on fire,” as WFAA wrote. He then claimed that he witnessed his girlfriend “rolling on the ground” to put out the flames that had engulfed her before someone finally threw water on her. She recalled to WFAA that she saw her “skin was falling off of my arm, and they had to cut my bra off because it was melted into my skin.”

When she woke up at Parkland Hospital’s burn unit, she said she “was burned up to my cheeks. My ear was burned on my left side. They had to shave one side of my head in the hospital because there was concern about injury to my scalp.”

Johnson’s burns were less severe, but still bad enough to keep him hospitalized for several days. Hance-Briscoe spent seven weeks in the hospital, during which time she underwent multiple skin grafts and developed sepsis. She now faces physical therapy and reconstructive surgery, and she uses a walker as a result of the sepsis.

The lawsuit alleges that the bar failed to properly train its employees “on the dangers of flaming drinks” and failed to “safely serve” the couple.

The pair have been updating the public on their condition on a GoFundMe page they set up to get help with their medical bills, which are estimated to exceed $20,000.

Twisted Trick closed permanently after the incident. Attorneys for the bar’s former owners denied the claims made by Hance-Briscoe and Johnson in their lawsuit.

The bar has denied the allegations, and calling the incident “pure accident” and saying that the couple didn’t take proper precautions before taking the drink.

“Plaintiffs’ alleged damages, if any, were caused or aggravated by Plaintiffs’ failure to use reasonable diligence to mitigate them,” the bar’s response to the lawsuit says.

Huangting Gong, of Glendale, is accused of driving around with the victims’ bodies in their Teslas as he killed them both in order last month, starting first with Kuanlun Wang, 37, before setting his deadly sights on Wang’s wife, Jing Li, also 37.

Wang had agreed to meet with Gong at an undisclosed location in the Southern California desert on Oct. 12, according to an Orange County District Attorney’s Office press release and his criminal complaint. Prosecutors believe the two men were discussing what Wang owed when Gong allegedly shot him in the head.

After “executing” Wang, Gong allegedly put his body in Wang’s Tesla that he drove out to the desert and took the vehicle back to Wang’s home in Brea, where he encountered Li.

“Gong is then accused of attacking Li with a hammer and hitting her while forcing her to give him her phone’s password,” according to the DA’s office. “Gong is accused of putting Li inside of her own Tesla, taking her to a desert area in San Bernardino where he shot her and then burned her body.”

Once this was done, Gong then allegedly returned to retrieve Wang’s body from his home and burned it in a desert area in Riverside County, according to prosecutors.

He capped off his murder errands with a trip to “different desert areas” to set the two Teslas on fire, prosecutors say, before later returning to the couple’s home on Oct. 14 to allegedly swipe nearly $250,000 worth of watches, shoes, handbags and clothing, according to the complaint.

“Depravity does not adequately describe the callousness involved to kill a human being and then drive around in the victim’s own car with his body inside in order to carry out the rest of his plan,” said Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer in a statement Tuesday. “No one deserves the fate of being executed and then set on fire in the middle of the desert in a desperate attempt by a killer to cover up his crimes. We are committed to pursuing justice for the victims and their loved ones.”

One of the things that helped lead investigators with the Brea Police Department to Gong was an alleged sighting of him on Wang’s home surveillance system on Oct. 14. Prosecutors say a “family member” was trying to get in contact with Wang and Li but couldn’t, so she checked the surveillance video and spotted Gong, who denied it was him.

“[T]hen her access to the video surveillance system was cut off,” according to the DA’s office.

Prosecutors say it was this same family member who told them of the $80,000 debt allegedly hanging over Gong’s head, claiming he was a “business associate” of Wang’s who owed him the money for undisclosed reasons.

“After not hearing from Wang, his family member contacted Gong on October 12, 2024, who told her Wang and Wang’s wife … never showed up for a trip to New York City to meet with another business associate who could give Wang the $80,000 Gong owed him,” the DA’s office says. “Wang’s family were not aware of any trip planned to New York.”

Gong was arrested on Nov. 5 while returning home from a trip to Seattle. He has been charged with a laundry list of felonies related to his alleged crimes, including two felony counts of murder, one felony count of kidnapping, two felony counts of arson, two felony counts of first-degree burglary, two felony special circumstances enhancements for committing a double murder, one felony special circumstances enhancement for committing a murder during the commission of kidnapping, and two felony enhancements for discharging a firearm that caused death.

Since the killings have been deemed “special circumstances murder cases,” prosecutors say Gong is eligible for both a maximum life sentence without the possibility of parole and the death penalty, which is only allowed for special circumstances cases in California.

“In special circumstances murder cases, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office convenes a special circumstances committee after the preliminary hearing is held to determine whether to pursue the death penalty,” according to the DA’s office. “This process includes a presentation of the case by the prosecutor as well as from the defense. The elected District Attorney makes the ultimate decision whether to pursue death after going through that process. If the decision is not to pursue death, then the maximum sentence is life without the possibility of parole.”

Court records show that Gong is scheduled to be arraigned on Dec. 2 in Santa Ana.

Valerie Owusu and Emmanuel Addae (Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office)

A 28-year-old mother from New York and her boyfriend, also 28, are facing decades behind bars after being convicted of killing the woman’s 5-year-old son, brutally beating the child with several different weapons and then leaving him to suffer for days without medical help before he eventually died.

A jury in Suffolk County on Friday found Valerie Owusu and Emmanuel Addae guilty on one count each of second-degree murder in the 2021 slaying of young King Owusu, authorities announced. The verdict came back after a two-and-a-half-week-long trial before Supreme Court Justice Steven A. Pilewski.

“This little boy was beaten and suffered for days at the hands of these defendants, one of whom was his own mother, until he unfortunately succumbed to his severe and extensive injuries,” Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney said in a statement, adding that Owusu and Addae “have been held accountable for this horrific crime.”

According to a news release from the DA’s office, Owusu and Addae used “at least four different instruments” to “brutally beat” King inside of their apartment in Lefrak City, Queens, over three days from March 30 to April 1.

Prosecutors said the evidence established that after the vicious attack on the defenseless boy, the couple watched for several days as King’s physical condition continued to get worse until he finally lost consciousness.

But even then, Owusu and Addae refused to seek medical attention for the boy. Instead, they chose to bring him to the home Addae’s parents who lived in an apartment in Long Island, New York.

“On April 1, 2021, Owusu and Addae brought King to a family member’s home in Brentwood and left him there to die,” prosecutors said in the release. “The Suffolk County Police Department was called after the family member returned home the same day and discovered that the boy was deceased. The child was taken to Southside Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.”

After leaving the child at the parents’ home, Owusu and Addae drove back to Queens and took the daughter they shared to the mall to go shopping, according to a report from Newsday. A search of their home reportedly turned up a belt and several broken sticks that had been used in the heinous attack.

The medical examiner who conducted the autopsy on King testified during the trial that the boy “was beaten from head to toe and that his injuries, which were too numerous to count, caused his death.”

The two are scheduled to appear in court again for their sentencing hearing on May 1. They are facing up to 25 years to life in a state detention facility.

A husband and wife are charged with sexually abusing a student while holding prominent roles at Damascus Christian School in Damascus, Oregon. David Alan Wakefield, 60, had been the principal and athletic director until 2020 while his wife, Rachel Jean Wakefield, 54, was a substitute teacher and coach.

Authorities in Clackamas County claim the two abused a student for approximately four years, starting when she was 14. Detectives worry that there could be more victims, and accordingly, they are seeking information from the public.

A grand jury indicted the Wakefields on Feb. 20, with the husband facing 20 counts of sex abuse in the second degree, and the wife for 11 counts of sex abuse in the second degree.

David Wakefield was aware of the allegations since 2021 and turned himself in when charges were filed, his attorney, Barry Engle, wrote in court, according to The Oregonian.

“Dave and Rachel Wakefield have been valued members of the Clackamas County community for their lives,” he and Rachel Wakefield’s attorney, Zach Stern, reportedly said in a joint statement. “They deny the charges and look forward to the day when the truth comes out.”

Damascus Christian School said they were “heartbroken” to hear about the charges filed against the Wakefields.

“Although this couple have not been connected to the church or school for some time, Damascus Community Church and Christian School still take these reports very seriously and the safety of our students and staff is a top priority,” the school wrote in a statement released Thursday. “If requested, we will fully cooperate with law enforcement and the courts during this process. Right: Lai allegedly carrying a red bag containing the kidnapped child (KOMO screenshots)

A 42-year-old man and his 33-year-old wife were arrested after they drove from their home in Florida all the way to Washington state where they allegedly executed an elaborate plan to ambush a woman and abduct her 7-month-old daughter. Marlly Jarina Ardila-Urrego, who is a cousin of the infant’s mother, and her husband, Chun Ho Vincent Lai, were taken into custody last week and charged with a spate of felonies, including kidnapping, burglary, and assault, court records reviewed by Law&Crime show.

“This case is extraordinarily unusual,” Senior King County Deputy Prosecutor Jennifer Phillips wrote in court documents filed Thursday, the Seattle Times reported. “(They) came to Washington for the explicit reason of taking this baby by force.”

According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by Seattle ABC affiliate KOMO, Lai and Ardila-Urrego at about 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 20 went to the mother’s apartment, which is about 20 miles south of Seattle. Footage from a parking lot security camera appears to show Ardila-Urrego and Lai — who is dressed as an Amazon delivery person and carrying a clipboard and brown cardboard box — park in the lot and stand near their car for about 10 minutes, possibly waiting for the infant’s father to leave the home.

The couple then reportedly went to the apartment of the mother, whom Ardila-Urrego had told to expect a package, and knocked on her door. When the woman opened the door, Lai allegedly attacked, punching the woman in the face several times until she was knocked to the ground.

The couple then entered the apartment where they bound the mother’s hands and feet with zip ties and placed tape over the mouth of her 2-year-old child, authorities said. Ardila-Urrego was reportedly wearing a mask and did not speak in an effort to hide her identity from her cousin.

Lai allegedly grabbed the infant and placed the baby inside of the Amazon box while locking the already-bound mother in her bedroom. Police said he also “gestured as if he were going to stab (the 2-year-old child) if (the mother) did not cooperate,” per the report.

Surveillance footage allegedly shows Ardila-Urrego return to the car with Lai, who can be seen carrying a red bag that allegedly contained the kidnapped child and placing it in the vehicle before they both drive away.

Tampa Fox affiliate WTVT reported that the mother was able to get free of the restraints and ran out of the home to search for her missing infant. She then called 911 and relayed the series of events to the emergency dispatcher.

The grandfather of the kidnapped child, who is also Ardila-Urrego’s uncle, spoke to police and reportedly pointed to Ardila-Urrego as a likely suspect for several reasons. First, he told police that Ardila-Urrego had repeatedly asked him for the victim’s address, which he said was “unusual” because Ardila-Urrego “does not often keep in contact with the family,” per KOMO. He also reportedly noted that about one year earlier, Ardila-Urrego told him she was going to make $70,000 by acting as a surrogate and giving birth to another couple’s baby, though he added he did not believe Ardila-Urrego ever became pregnant.

Additionally, the kidnapped child’s mother reportedly told police that she had recently been in contact with Ardila-Urrego, who told the mother to expect a package to be delivered for the baby on Feb. 20.

After conducting several interviews and obtaining surveillance footage, investigators said they were able to positively identify Lai and his vehicle which led to the FBI securing GPS tracking on his cellphone.

Authorities reported the vehicle’s description and location to Washington State Patrol and troopers were able to conduct a traffic stop on the car as it was driving east on I-90. Troopers said they located the kidnapped child in the vehicle and placed Lai and Ardila-Urrego under arrest. The child had not been harmed.

The duo were still in detention as of Friday morning on bond of $750,000. They are currently scheduled to appear in court on March 7.
