BISHOP, Calif. – The Bureau of Land Management, in partnership with the Mono Arts Council (MAC), announces a community engagement event as part of its Artist in Residence Program. On Saturday, Sept. 28, from 3-6 p.m., photographer Ryan Contreras will host a special workshop titled, “Advanced Cyanotypes” at 437 Old Mammoth Road, Suite 180, Mammoth Lakes, CA.

Ryan Contreras, a black and white artistic photographer from Los Angeles, has captured the breathtaking landscapes of the Eastern Sierra for years. Contreras will share his recent experience exploring the Bodie Hills, a remote and stunning corner of the Bishop BLM Field Office. Contreras will provide hands-on instruction creating cyanotype images— a photographic process similar to black and white images but recognized for its rich blue tones.

“The artist in residence program is a wonderful way to celebrate and share the beauty of public lands in the Bishop Field Office,” says Bishop Field Manager Sherri Lisius. “We appreciate Mr. Contreras sharing his artwork and providing the public opportunities to be inspired and create their own artwork.”

This event is open to the public, providing art enthusiasts and community members with a chance to delve into this photographic technique. Supplies will be provided by the MAC. Space is limited; participants must sign up through the MAC website.

The BLM Artist-in-Residence program encourages artists, including photographers, potters, sculptors, to use their observational skills in portraying a variety of cultural and natural resources through images, objects, and performances that bring others enjoyment and forge a deeper understanding of our nation’s public lands. To learn more about the program, please visit: Artist-in-Residence Program.

Those planning to visit the area can learn more by visiting the Bishop BLM Field Office page. For specific questions, contact the BLM Bishop Field Office at 760-872-5000 or BLM_CA_Web_BI@blm.gov.

U.S. probation and pretrial officers must balance two very important goals: protecting public safety and helping people they oversee make positive changes in their lives.

In recognition of National Pretrial, Probation, and Parole Supervision (PPPS) Week, a new video explains the work of officers and their unique roles in the administration of justice, providing insight into how they do their jobs effectively.

Video of In Their Own Words: U.S. Probation and Pretrial Officers

“It’s the probation officer’s job to help assess the person under supervision and find out what their needs are. And once we know what their needs are, it’s our job to help motivate them and to … help collaboratively come up with that road map to get them to where they need to be,” said Justin Adams, a special offender specialist for the Western District of North Carolina U.S. Probation Office.

Officers work hard to help individuals who have been convicted of federal crimes to fully reintegrate themselves into society. Many face a wide range of needs, including employment, mental health treatment and even getting a driver’s license after spending time in incarceration.

“Not only am I working to help preserve community safety and looking out for the public, but I’m also working every day to help people make positive changes in their lives,” said Amanda Knox, a sentencing guideline specialist for the District of Arizona U.S. Probation Office.

PPPS Week is honored annually during the third calendar week of July to recognize the public service of community corrections professionals.

When U.S. Magistrate Judge Lajuana M. Counts speaks with students about the Judiciary, she sees future jurors, judges, lawyers, lawmakers, and – most importantly – engaged young adults who have a stake in the nation’s legal system.

“In these conversations, judges and lawyers are well-positioned to model and teach civil discourse skills that we use every day in courtrooms across the country,” said Counts, who serves in the Western District of Missouri. “Legal skills are life skills that students can take with them into many different settings, now and into the future.”

Some 800 students in Kansas City, Missouri, participated in recent conversations about the Constitution with federal judges and attorneys, as a part of the Federal Bar Association’s (FBA) annual Civics Day.

Sept. 4 marked the fourth Civics Day, an FBA event offered to public schools in the city that is hosting the association’s annual meeting.

“We, as lawyers, are thankful to be invited into the schools when students are trying to understand contemporary legal issues and the impact of the Constitution on their lives,” said Danielle Atchison, the FBA chapter member in charge of organizing this year’s Civics Day.

Federal judges and attorneys from across the nation gathered at local high schools to facilitate candid conversations about the Constitution and the Bill of Rights and their impact on the daily lives of students. Students also shared their questions, opinions, and perspectives on current issues.

“Students come prepared with thought-provoking questions and comments that invite us to drill down into issues of concern to them,” said Andrew Loewenstein, a West Palm Beach, Florida attorney, and the national point person for the event, which started in 2020. “They want to share their opinions and ask questions about the Constitution and the federal courts.”

In December, federal judges, attorney volunteers, and court professionals also will visit classrooms, virtually and in-person, throughout the country to lead students in candid conversations programs in recognition of Bill of Rights Day, which is Dec. 15. To request a candid conversations program from a nearby federal courthouse, contact the federal courts’ national educational outreach manager, Rebecca Fanning.

Visit the educational resources section for additional programs and activities.
