Homicide victim shot as ‘he innocently drank coffee’: Police

The Broward County Sheriff’s Office released the names of all three alleged victims of Nathan Gingles, 43, who was found at a Walmart store with his daughter hours after her mother and grandfather were found shot dead in her Florida home.

Gingles was accused of allegedly shooting his estranged wife, Mary Catherine Gingles, 34; her father David Pozner, 64; and her neighbor Andrew Ferrin, 36, on the morning of Feb. 16. In a press release, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office said that Pozner was found deceased with a gunshot wound on the back patio of the home where his daughter lived. Broward County Sheriff’s Detective Lacey Henry wrote in an arrest warrant obtained by WPLG, a local ABC affiliate, that he was still holding the handle of a broken coffee mug after being allegedly shot “in the head while he innocently drank coffee on his back patio.”

The warrant detailed more of the horrific crime scene police observed in the Tamarac, Florida, neighborhood, including the discovery of Mary Gingles’ body at the home of Ferrin, who was also found deceased. Police stated that surveillance video from the neighborhood showed Mary Gingles running to Ferrin’s home for help following the shooting of her father.

WPLG obtained surveillance footage from a neighboring house that recorded the sound of several gunshots followed by a woman screaming. The same camera also allegedly captured Nathan Gingles, walking on the sidewalk, trailed by the 4-year-old daughter he allegedly kidnapped. Henry wrote in the warrant that the two were allegedly following Mary Gingles to Ferrin’s house.

Police believed that the little girl was a witness to all three alleged murders.

Nathan Gingles and Mary Gingles were in the midst of a contentious divorce process that included several instances of domestic violence. At the time of her death, Mary Gingles had a protection order against Nathan Gingles, which he was charged with violating. It was noted in the warrant that deputies saw a domestic violence injunction document in the kitchen and several gun lockboxes.

WPLG reported on Mary Gingles’ fears of her estranged husband, as she described them in court documents. In one handwritten document, Mary Gingles wrote that Nathan Gingles once “sang that he was going to shoot me and there was nothing I could do about it.” In her injunction victim’s statement, Mary Gingles explicitly said, “Because of Nathan’s psychotic behavior, his multiple threats, his drug use, his multiple/many silenced firearms, and my impending divorce action, I am afraid Nathan will kill me and my daughter.”

The couple’s 4-year-old was the subject of an Amber Alert before she was found with her father. She was unharmed.

Case Mountain Extensive Recreation Management Area is closed due to Coffee Pot wildland fire

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The Bureau of Land Management Bakersfield Field Office is issuing an emergency closure of the Case Mountain Extensive Recreation Management Area in Tulare County, due to wildland fire danger from the nearby Coffee Pot Fire. This temporary closure is effective immediately, until further notice.

The Coffee Pot Fire started Saturday, Aug. 3, and has burned more than 1,600 acres of heavy brush and ground fuels as well as burning through the giant sequoia groves near the Case Mountain Extensive Recreation Management Area and in Sequoia National Park.

Case Mountain Extensive Recreation Management Area, which is approximately 20,000 acres of BLM-managed public land located near the town of Three Rivers, in Tulare County, contains the only Sequoia grove complex managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The complex is comprised of six distinct sequoia grove units, which total about 444 acres. The area is also part of the Milk Ranch Peak Wilderness Study Area and the nearly 20,000-acre Kaweah Area of Critical Environmental Concern, which is designated for protection of the Case Mountain giant sequoia groves, other sensitive plant and animal species, riparian areas, and cultural resources.

The area is closed to all forms of public access to provide for public and firefighter safety in relation to the Coffee Pot Fire and management of that fire. Wife who poisoned airman husband’s coffee pleads guilty

The woman who was caught on hidden camera spiking her U.S. Air Force husband’s coffee with bleach pleaded guilty to lesser charges.

Melody Felicano Johnson, 40 entered a guilty plea on Monday to two counts of adding poison or a harmful substance to food or drink. Prosecutors are recommending she serve two years in prison although she could serve as much as four years. After she’s released from prison, she will be on probation for up to three years.

Dressed in an orange jail jumpsuit, Johnson answered a series of questions from the judge and confirmed she agreed to the plea deal that dropped the attempted murder charge. A judge will sentence Johnson on May 10.

As Law&Crime previously reported, police in Tucson, Arizona, said Johnson had been poisoning her spouse’s coffee since he was stationed in Germany in March 2023. He is an airman with the U.S. Air Force and the couple had been going through a divorce at the time.

After two to three weeks of his coffee tasting bad, Johnson’s husband purchased pool chemical testing strips and the coffee pot water returned positive for high levels of chlorine even though the faucet water was normal.

Hidden camera video footage showed her trying to poison her husband by pouring bleach into his coffee maker — and the video was taken by the would-be victim himself.

“Boom,” he is heard saying in one self-recorded video after getting a positive result for chlorinated water.

According to officers, he set up a hidden camera in his home and it captured defendant Johnson pouring something into his coffee pot.

“He stated she knew that he would prep his coffee pot to be ready at night so that in the morning he just needed to turn it on to make his coffee,” documents show. “At that time he stopped drinking the coffee but continued to pretend to drink it as he did not want to make a report of this while in Germany.”

This pattern allegedly continued after the Air Force moved him on July 1 to the David Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson. He brought video evidence to police, and when the initial footage was not clear enough, he purchased even more cameras. He secretly recorded his wife making her way with bleach from the laundry room to the coffee maker and pouring the substance inside, police said.

Here is one such video dated July 16, 2023, from when the couple lived in permanent housing. A woman, identified as defendant Johnson, is in a small room pouring what appears to be a bleach bottle into a small bottle. The footage, which features time timestamps and is edited to depict different points of view, shows that in a matter of seconds, she made her way to the kitchen and poured the contents of the smaller bottle into the coffee maker.

Footage from July 5, 2023, when the couple lived in temporary housing, shows her pouring something into the machine while wearing just a towel.

Multiple videos show the husband testing the coffee pot water, even comparing it with water straight from the tap. In the footage, he often remarked on the smell and that the water in the machine was soapy.

“You can smell it from here,” he says in one video. “You can smell it.”

“Look at that,” he said, showing the results of the test. “Totally changed. Wow. Wow, wow, wow.”

In this and other footage, he showed a close-up of the bubbly insides of the coffee maker’s water chamber.

Defendant Johnson remains at the Pima County Jail, online records show.
