Khaliq Woods, 29, was found guilty of felony murder, aggravated battery and first-degree child cruelty for the 2019 death of his infant daughter, Kamila Woods, at their home in Duluth, the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday.

Prosecutors outlined the case against Woods in a press release Tuesday, announcing that he was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole.

Jurors deliberated for 10 hours before finding him guilty.

“We grieve with the family of the deceased child Kamila Woods,” Gwinnett District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson said in a statement. “This is a tragedy that an infant’s life was taken,” the DA added.

According to prosecutors, Woods, who was 23 years old at the time brought Kamila to Northside Duluth Medical Center himself on the morning of Nov. 30, 2019. Kamila was pronounced dead upon arrival.

“Kamila’s mother had dropped her off at Woods’ apartment the previous day,” the DA’s office explained Tuesday. “Woods told police that he had been playing with the infant that evening, tossing her in the air and catching her. He said on one of those catches, he felt the infant’s side go in, and he heard wheezing. He put her to bed around 10 p.m., that evening, and went back to check on her around 2 a.m.”

More from Law&Crime: ‘I had orders’: Man killed dad after fight over doing ‘dishes,’ told 911 he put his father ‘out of his misery,’ police say

Woods told police that Kamila had not moved from her position, and that she was also refusing to take a bottle or pacifier. He claimed he checked on her again at around 6 a.m. before ordering a ride-share to take her to the hospital.

“A search warrant of Woods’ phone revealed that around 2 am, he searched for ‘symptoms of broken ribs in children’ on the internet no less than 9 times,” according to the DA’s office.

“The autopsy conducted on Kamila showed that she had suffered multiple rib fractures, a lacerated liver, and bleeding and swelling of the brain,” prosecutors said. “Evidence introduced at trial showed that Kamila’s injuries were consistent with being violently squeezed and shaken.”

DA Austin-Gatson added, “We pray that the outcome of this trial will help Kamila’s family heal.”

Inset: Michael Devon Webb (Oakland County Sheriff’s Office). Background: Rachel Wooten (GoFundMe).

A 21-year-old man in Michigan has been arrested for allegedly killing his fiancee, shooting her in the neck and claiming his firearm accidentally discharged while he was cleaning it. Michael Devon Webb was taken into custody last week and charged with one count of first-degree murder and using a firearm in the commission of a felony in the slaying of 23-year-old Rachel Renee Wooten, authorities announced.

According to a news release from the Oakland Sheriff’s Office, deputies at about 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, responded to the Highland Township home in the 200 block of Maple Drive, which is about 40 miles northwest of Detroit, Michigan, regarding a reported shooting. Webb and Wooten lived in the home where the shooting is alleged to have occurred with their 6-month-old child.

The caller identified himself as Webb and allegedly told the emergency dispatcher that he “had shot his fiancee and himself,” per the release.

Upon arriving at the scene, first responders located Wooten, who appeared to be suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck “at very close range,” prosecutors said in a release. She was pronounced dead on the scene. The couple’s child was not harmed during the incident.

Police placed Webb under arrest at the residence. When speaking to police, Webb originally said of the shooting, “it was an accident” that happened “while cleaning his gun,” police wrote. However, the news release said that the evidence recovered from the residence “did not support” an accidental shooting being the cause of Wooten’s death.

The Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office said that Webb’s allegedly self-inflicted gunshot wound was “apparently from the same bullet” that killed his fiancee.

“Rachel Wooten was just 23 and a mother of an infant,” Prosecutor Karen McDonald said in a statement. “Her entire life was ahead of her, until it was ended in what appears to be a domestic violence tragedy. She won’t be there for her child or other loved ones in her life. I’m committed to bringing her killer to justice.”

Sheriff Michael Bouchard reiterated the prosecutor’s sentiments in a statement of his own.

“I am proud of our investigators and team that responded to a tragic death and unraveled a false offered narrative to hold an individual accountable,”

Following his arrest, Webb was booked into the Oakland County Jail. He appeared in court before Magistrate Judge Andra Richardson in 52-1 District Court in Novi, Michigan, for his arraignment on Friday, and was ordered to remain in detention without bond. He is currently scheduled to appear in court again for a probable cause hearing on April 30.

Under Michigan state law, first-degree murder is punishable by a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

A GoFundMe for started by Wooten’s sister said she was a “beautiful” sibling.

“Rachel was an amazing woman, devoted mother, and loving caretaker of her stepson as well,” the page reads. “She was also the best sissy in the entire world, my rock, and my best friend. Words cannot even begin to describe this tragedy and devastation.”

A New Mexico woman who reported that her husband stabbed himself has now been charged — with allegedly stabbing her husband.

In a Facebook post on April 1, the Farmington Police Department announced that following a years-long investigation into the death of Robert Hoefer, 49, his wife, Heather Fernandez-Hoefer, 51, has been charged with his murder.

Police said that on November 29, 2020, officers responded to the Hoefer residence after Fernandez-Hoefer called 911 after she allegedly claimed she found her husband unresponsive. When questioned by police at the time, she allegedly said he had stabbed himself, repeating the story several times, according to an affidavit obtained by KRQE, a local CBS affiliate.

Her story, according to police, eventually fell apart due to her own conflicting statements.

According to KRQE’s reporting on the affidavit, Fernandez-Hoefer allegedly repeatedly said her husband stabbed himself in the chest in the home’s computer room while she was in another room and that she then helped him clean himself up afterwards.

The next morning, after they went to bed at different times, she reportedly said that she found him lying face-down on the bedroom floor.

However, the affidavit stated that aside from a washcloth, blood evidence was only found in the bedroom. It further stated that the majority of the blood was found on the bed, not on the floor, where Fernandez-Hoefer reportedly claimed to have found her husband.

Cell phone evidence cited in the affidavit also revealed that the couple reportedly had arguments over money and past relationships — a neighbor also reportedly heard a man and a woman fighting in the early morning hours leading up to Hoefer’s death.

KRQE reported that Fernandez-Hoefer’s explanations were inconsistent where the alleged incident’s timeline was concerned. The affidavit reportedly includes several alleged versions of her story, concluding that the “inconsistent and unlikely statements are signs of deception.”

Fernandez-Hoefer was charged with second-degree murder and tampering with evidence. She was taken into custody at San Juan County Adult Detention Center and released on bond on April 2.

Stephen Miller Sr., 64, first reported his wife Gloria Miller, 57, was missing on Feb. 24, according to a press release from Dothan Police. In the following days, the seemingly concerned husband appeared on local news, pleading for help and taking gut-wrenching phone calls in front of TV cameras. But behind the scenes, police said his story started falling apart. In a press conference on Feb. 26, the Dothan Police Department announced that Stephen Miller had been charged with murder after allegedly admitting to strangling his wife.

Stephen Miller initially told police that he had not seen his wife since Feb. 22, when he said that she “suddenly disappeared” from the couple’s home. Gloria Miller was reported as a missing person on Feb. 24, and her husband took to the airwaves to ask for the public’s help in finding his wife. He was joined by her family, who were seemingly baffled by her disappearance. Her brother, Sidney Whitaker, told WDHN, a local ABC affiliate, “This is not normal at all. She hangs around the house, she doesn’t venture away from the home, she pretty hangs around the house all the time.”

As the investigation into Gloria Miller’s disappearance began, investigators reportedly suspected foul play early on. Authorities stated that before Stephen Miller officially made the report, investigators found some of his wife’s personal property in the parking lot of a shopping center in their hometown. According to the police, “The investigation revealed Stephen was the person who placed the property at that location just hours before it was found and turned into one of the local businesses.”

When police questioned Stephen Miller about his wife’s whereabouts, he “admitted that on [Feb. 22] he and Gloria had a physical altercation during which time he admitted to manually strangling her until she was lifeless,” authorities said. According to Dothan police Lt. Ronald Hall, Stephen Miller then allegedly “loaded her body in the bed of his pickup truck, he took her down the road a few miles where he concealed her on the edge of the roadway.”

Hall said that Stephen Miller’s admission came about when “his facts were not adding up, and he basically knew that he had no choice.”

After Stephen Miller’s alleged confession, the body of Gloria Miller was found on Feb. 26, dumped in a dry creek bed in Alabama’s Geneva County.

Court records obtained by Al.com revealed a history of domestic violence complaints by the couple, including a Protection From Abuse (PFA) request by Stephen Miller in July 2024 that his wife had made threats against him and his family. He filed a second (PFA) request against her in January. Both requests were ultimately rescinded.

Stephen Miller was arrested and charged with murder. He is being held in the Houston County Jail on no bond.

A Nevada man is being held without bail after being arrested for the alleged fatal stabbing of his own son, who he claimed “fell on a knife.”

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police reported to a call on Dec. 22 at around 1:00 p.m. that a man was suffering from stab wounds to the chest in an apartment on Pebble Road near Maryland Parkway in Las Vegas. The man was Nelson Garcia-Leon, whose age was not provided, and he was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. Near the apartment where Garcia-Leon was found, police recovered a bloody, 15-inch knife, “hastily hidden behind an ice cooler.”

According to court documents obtained by KLAS, a local CBS affiliate, LVMPD homicide detectives began their investigation with a woman whom they referred to as Garcia-Leon’s “girlfriend,” even though they’d only known each other for about a month. She stated that she was more acquainted with Garcia-Leon’s father, Juan Garcia-Hernandez, 81, and that the father and son shared the Pebble Road apartment.

When the woman came back to the apartment after shopping, she observed Garcia-Leon acting unusual and eventually saw blood on his chest. She also reportedly saw a knife on the ground. When she asked Garcia-Hernandez what happened, he allegedly claimed that his son fell on the knife.

As she struggled to dial 911 — apparently dialing extra numbers — she told police that the father “was doing nothing to help” his injured son. When she asked him to go get help, he left the apartment.

Police also interviewed Garcia-Hernandez, who stated that he and his son had gotten into a “verbal altercation” over his son’s drinking. When Garcia-Leon collapsed, the father said that he went looking for help from his neighbors, who helped him move his son into the bedroom. One of the neighbors ended up calling 911, telling dispatchers that the victim’s father said “his son fell on a knife and was bleeding,” noting that the father “didn’t seem stressed at all.”

Once police realized that Garcia-Hernandez’s story kept changing, they started to suspect that he may have been responsible for his son’s injury. Eventually, they found the alleged weapon “hastily hidden behind an ice cooler.” Police records obtained by KLAS showed that Garcia-Hernandez had a number of arrests involving his allegedly threatening others with knives, one as recently as May.

Garcia-Hernandez was arrested and charged with open murder. He is being held at the Clark County Jail without bail. His next court date is scheduled for Jan. 9.

A Georgia woman convicted of murdering and burning the body of her husband, a prominent Atlanta-area attorney, was sentenced to life in prison after a Dec. 5 sentencing hearing in which she claimed that the real killer was the man’s son.

Melody Walker Farris, 64, of Georgia was convicted last month for the 2018 murder of lawyer Gary Wayne Farris, who was the 58-year-old managing partner of the Atlanta office of midsize law firm Burr & Forman at the time of his death, Law360 reports.

Gary Wayne Farris was the chair of Burr & Forman’s lending practice and a member of the executive committee, the article reports. He was a graduate of the University of Alabama School of Law.

Publications with coverage besides Law360 include Court TV, WXIA-TV, Courthouse News Service, Fox 5 Atlanta and the Independent.

Witnesses said Farris had two affairs before her husband’s death at their farm in Alpharetta, Georgia. She and her husband had also argued about money, and she stood to benefit if he died, prosecutors said. The Independent cited a report by the Cherokee Tribune & Ledger News that Farris was the beneficiary of a $2 million life insurance policy.

During the sentencing hearing, Farris said she has kept the real killer’s identity secret for six years. Courthouse News Service reported on her words.

“I want the world to know who did this. Not only did I not do this, I know who did,” Farris said. “I know Scott killed his father.”

Farris said her mother had advised her to take the blame for the killing, but she would no longer protect her son Scott Farris. Farris said she saw Scott Farris coming from the burn pile, where the remains had been found, and described other circumstances that she found suspicious.

The defense previously suggested that Scott Farris could be involved in the murder because he was missing a gun that had the same kind of bullets used in the killing, according to Courthouse News. Defense lawyer Michael Ray said investigators did not search for evidence in Scott Farris’ room, which was filthy in contrast to his spotless bathroom.

Investigators first thought that Gary Wayne Farris may have fallen onto the burn pile during a medical emergency. They later found a bullet in his rib cage.

A lawyer in Mississippi is grateful that he and his staff members are safe after an agitated client with a gun in his leather bag demanded $25,000.

“We don’t take it for granted that the Lord spared our lives yesterday,” said lawyer Carlos Moore of Grenada, Mississippi, in an interview with WREG.

The client came to Moore’s office with his wife, said he was the Messiah, and said he wouldn’t leave until he received $25,000 in his workers’ compensation case, Moore told the broadcast station.

Moore told the client that he had to call the opposing counsel. Moore left the meeting room, called 911, and texted his staff to remain in their offices.

“I was concerned what he would do when I came back to tell him there would not be a $25,000 check today,” Moore said.

When Moore came back, the client “was going for a gun” in a small leather bag, Moore said. The client’s wife was telling him, “No, you’re not doing this today.” The client replied that the gun wasn’t loaded, and he and his wife continued to bicker over it.

Police and paramedics quickly arrived. The client wasn’t charged because he never threatened harm. Moore plans to withdraw from the man’s case.

A woman allegedly claimed she stabbed her elderly mother to death in self-defense and waited seven hours to call 911, but Florida deputies said the defendant’s injuries did not match defensive wounds.

“Ms. Tinsley showed your affiant several lacerations to her legs and injuries to her right hand she claimed were caused by the decedent; however, none of the injuries appeared consistent with defensive knife wounds,” they wrote in the affidavit for arrest affidavit against Kelly Ann Olivier Tinsley, 49.

She is in the Brevard County Jail on a count of manslaughter reclassified with the use of a deadly weapon for allegedly killing Cheryl Maggard Meurer, 69.

Tinsley allegedly called 911 on Tuesday at 5:16 a.m., according to documents viewed by Law&Crime. She allegedly said Meurer attacked her, and she attacked her back.

Questioned by the 911 operator, she admitted stabbing her mother but hung up when asked about the wound location, documents stated.

Deputies said they arrived at 5:26 a.m., finding Meurer under a blanket on the floor inside the doorway of the home. A pool of blood surrounded her. They forced their way inside, and first responders declared her dead.

Deputies found Tinsley lying awake on a pillow in the hallway facing the front door, they wrote. Suspected blood on the side of the washing machine, about 20 feet from Meurer, they said.

The medical examiner found on Meurer “multiple wounds consistent with defensive knife wounds” on her hands, left arm, right ankle, right knee, and neck, according to documents.

Tinsley allegedly told investigators that on Monday night, her mother told her she “needed to find a bigger place to be a better mom.”

Tinsley said she jokingly replied, “F— that!” according to documents.

She allegedly claimed that Meurer approached her with a knife, and hit her in the mouth, causing the blade to strike her front tooth.

“A glancing blow from the punch struck Ms. Tinsley in the nose,” deputies wrote, describing her alleged side of the story.

Mother and daughter struggled over the knife, and landed on the floor, documents stated.

“Ms. Tinsley held the blade of the knife to the decedent’s neck and told her, ‘Quit coming at me!’” the affidavit said. “At which time, the decedent leaned [forward], still trying to attack her, causing Ms. Tinsley to ‘poke’ her in the neck.”

They continued fighting until “she noticed the decedent’s eyes were changing.”

Tinsley allegedly described walking to the laundry room, changing her clothes, and washing her hands and face with washing machine water.

Sick to her stomach at the sight of blood, she covered her mother’s body with the blanket, laid down in the hallway, and seven hours later, called 911 to report the death.

Despite her self-defense claim, however, authorities found no injuries to her face, lips, or the inside of her mouth, authorities wrote.

“There was no swelling, cuts, nor redness on her face,” they wrote.

They noted “a single healing cut” to her right hand.

Deputies said anyone who may have information about this death investigation is asked to please call Agent Kevin Morris of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit at 321-633-8413 or CRIMELINE at 1-800-423-TIPS (8477).
