Two men from Colorado were arrested after they allegedly tried to smuggle tens of thousands of dollars worth of methamphetamine and tobacco into a federal prison in Louisiana by launching the contraband over a security wall using a “professionally manufactured” cannon.

Jose Francisco Herrera Munoz, 18, and Angel Gonzales Gutierrez, 19, were taken into custody and charged with one count each of attempting to introduce contraband into a penal institution and one count each of attempting to distribute methamphetamine, authorities announced.

According to a news release from the Grant Parish Sheriff’s Office, the two suspects were attempting to “smuggle in $112,000 worth of tobacco and $89,500 worth of methamphetamine into the Federal Prison, by using a cannon.”

The incident took place in unincorporated Grant Parish, Louisiana, which is about 120 miles north of Lafayette. The parish is home to U.S. Penitentiary Pollock, a high-security facility for male inmates that is overseen by the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.

A defense attorney for the man who allegedly attempted to assassinate Donald Trump at his Palm Beach, Florida, golf course asked the judge overseeing the case for a lengthy extension of the pretrial calendar to deal with mountains of discovery.

During the Wednesday hearing, however, U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon expressed a decided measure of skepticism at the request — but said she would defer ruling until late this week or early next week.

Earlier this week, Ryan W. Routh, 58, filed a motion asking the court to reset the beginning of trial in the high-profile case from February 2025 to December 2025, citing the potential for a constitutionally-deficient defense should proceedings continue at the current pace.

On May 28, months before U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon dismissed Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago classified documents prosecution, she handed Jack Smith a loss, denying the special counsel’s request for a gag order on the former president. That same day, an unsealed federal indictment reveals, an Illinois man with a history of violent offenses allegedly threatened to murder an unnamed federal judge in St. Lucie County, Florida, a county that contains the relatively “small” Fort Pierce courthouse where Cannon and a magistrate judge sit.

Bloomberg got the scoop on the case against Eric James Rennert on Friday and reported that the victim in the case could very well be Cannon, considering she is “the only district judge” in St. Lucie County.
