A Florida nurse likely will be blind for the rest of her life after a patient allegedly attacked her unprovoked.

Deputies from the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office wrote an arrest affidavit that the patient, later identified as 33-year-old Stephen Eric Scantlebury, had been admitted to HCA Florida Palms West Hospital under the Baker Act, which allows people to be involuntarily detained and examined for mental health issues, and was receiving treatment. Shortly before 1:30 p.m. Tuesday the nurse walked into Scantlebury’s third-floor room. Witnesses said the suspect inexplicably “jumped on top of his bed, and then jumped onto and attacked the victim,” according to the affidavit.

More from Law&Crime: Man killed his dad, hid body under blue tarp in yard telling worried son it ‘was trash’ before fleeing to Walmart

Scantlebury allegedly stood over the victim and repeatedly punched her in the face. A witness yelled for him to stop and he ran out of the room. He fled down the hallway and into the stairwell where he went down to the first floor and escaped from the hospital. The suspect, shirtless and still wearing patches from an EKG monitor, reportedly sprinted across the parking lot and into traffic on Southern Boulevard. Video obtained by local TV stations showed deputies pointing what appeared to be either Tasers or stun guns at Scantlebury and ordering him onto the ground in the middle of the road. He surrendered and deputies took him into custody.

The nurse was transported via helicopter to another hospital where she was last listed in critical condition. Doctors said “essentially every bone in the victim’s face is broken and the victim is likely to lose the use of both eyes.”

According to cops, Scantlebury had been “acting paranoid” for the last few days and “blaming people in his life for events they had nothing to do with.” That led to authorities to take him into custody under the Baker Act.

In a statement, HCA Florida Healthcare said the attack “happened within a matter of seconds.”

“Our primary concern is with our beloved colleague and we are praying for her recovery. We are also providing support to our hospital staff who are understandably shaken by this incident,” the hospital said.

Willa Fuller, executive director of the Florida Nurses Association, also released a statement expressing concern about the safety of nurses as attacks happen across the country.

“With concern about a longstanding nursing shortage, there needs to be substantive action by ALL stakeholders to prevent this kind of egregious action. We would like to see direct care nurses included in any initiatives related to violence against healthcare workers,” she said.

Scantlebury stands accused of attempted murder and is receiving treatment at a hospital. His next court date is scheduled for Tuesday.

Insets, from left: William Prieto, Holly Strong and Abigail Strong. Background: A fight broke out at Big Chicken restaurant in Hartland, Michigan (Livingston County Sheriff’s Office).

Shaquille O’Neal showed up to promote a chicken restaurant in Michigan and people became so desperate to get a look at the basketball great that a few people allegedly began fighting with deputies.

It happened Sept. 27 outside the new Big Chicken in Hartland, the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office said. Shaq, who founded the Las Vegas-based chain, was scarfing down some chicken inside the restaurant when a big crowd gathered outside the door.

“People started to get a little testy because they couldn’t get in, etc.,” Livingston County Sheriff Michael Murphy told Detroit Fox affiliate WJBK. “And then Shaq showed up. So that added a little bit to it.”

More from Law&Crime: ‘Complete betrayal’: Vice principal ‘instructed’ student to delete video of teacher putting another student in ‘chokehold’ instead of reporting classroom abuse, sheriff says

As the crowd tried to get inside, 21-year-old William Prieto allegedly became confrontational with deputies after they asked him to leave.

Cops say Prieto took a swing at a deputy who then drew his Taser. That’s when 48-year-old Holly Strong and her daughter 21-year-old Abigail Strong, who were with Prieto, allegedly tried to disarm the deputy. Other deputies came to help and knocked over the Strongs, cops say. Prieto then allegedly attacked a deputy from behind and tried to put him in a chokehold. Two deputies tried to use their Tasers but they did not work.

Three cops eventually subdued Prieto and handcuffed him, according to deputies. The mother and daughter continued to resist so they also were taken into custody, deputies said. Prieto was carrying a BB gun that looked like a real firearm in his backpack, deputies said.

Several videos of the incident popped up on social media, but the sheriff’s office on Wednesday posted a security video that provided a “full picture” of the scuffle.

“I mean, what are we supposed to do? Are we supposed to let this, you know, 250-pound guy, you know, beat up my deputy for whatever reason,” Murphy told WJBK. “That’s not the way it works.”

One of the deputies involved in the incident suffered minor injuries.

Prieto was arrested for three counts of resting and obstructing an officer and one count each of carrying a concealed weapon and attempted strangulation. Holly Strong faces charges of attempting to disarm an officer while both she and her daughter are charged with three counts each of resisting and obstructing an officer.

There were no other issues at the event, cops said.

A man appears in two still images after breaking into a house in Coatesville, Penn. on Dec. 24, 2023. (Coatesville Police Department; Tiffany Szabara)

A specter is haunting Pennsylvania — or, at least, a hoodie-wearing man is doing his best to frighten the wits out of one family in a small town in the Philadelphia suburbs of Chester County.

The man in question has reportedly broken into the same residence over and over, according to the Coatesville Police Department.

And, what’s more, the man allegedly had the same specific room in mind each time he gained entry to the home on Pennsylvania Avenue: the bedroom of the 9-year-old girl who lives there.

“He’s coming in and having conversations with her,” Tiffany Szabara, the girl’s mother, told Philadelphia ABC affiliate WPVI.

“He’s going straight to my daughter’s bedroom at the top of the stairs and watching her sleep,” the worried mother added.

According to Szabara, the unwanted visitor has broken into their home on at least four occasions beginning in September this year. The last time he came in was during the early morning hours on Christmas Eve, she said, when the man walked through her kitchen and was caught on surveillance footage. That footage was then shared with police who released still images of the suspect later that same day.

“We are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the subject,” police wrote in a Facebook post. “Like many, we are concerned and patrol officers & detectives are interested in obtaining additional information.”

In the footage, the man, wearing a light-colored hoodie, enters through a kitchen door, then later leaves the same way, closing the door behind him. In comments to WPVI, Szabara said the man is typically gaining access through the house’s back door. She attributed his first alleged entry into her home to a malfunctioning lock.

That first time, she told the TV station, she figured the man was just drunk and mistaken. But then it happened again and again — and again.

On two other occasions, the man gained entry because the back door was accidentally left unlocked, Szabara said. On yet another occasion, the man allegedly climbed through a window to get into the house.

“I even had cash on the counter one day, and he didn’t touch the cash. He just goes into my daughter’s bedroom,” she told WPVI.

The continuous presence of the uninvited man has raised uncomfortable questions for the family and broader Coatesville.

“You know, if this man is so determined to target my daughter, what else could he be doing?” Szabara went on to ask out loud.

After the repeat break-ins, Szabara told the TV station, she decided to outfit her home with additional locks and surveillance cameras.

But those measures have not quelled the fear.

“I do feel like he’s watching us at this point and that there’s something going on,” Szabara told WPVI. “And that he’s targeting my daughter.”

Police are reportedly interviewing the family about the incidents and adding additional patrols to the area near the Szabara residence.

Law&Crime reached out to Coatesville police for additional details about this story but no response was immediately forthcoming at the time of publication.
