A 28-year-old mother and a 31-year-old man were arrested in Michigan in the death of the woman’s 3-year-old son, who investigators say was killed in his home nearly seven years ago.

Amanda Maison and Maurice Houle, her boyfriend at the time of the incident, were taken into custody on Friday and charged with one count each of first-degree murder in the 2018 slaying of young Matthew Maison, authorities announced. Houle is also facing three counts of assaulting, resisting, or obstructing a police officer stemming from his alleged conduct during Friday’s arrest.

According to a Friday news release from the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office, Matthew was found dead in his bed inside of the family’s Port Huron Township home on Feb. 18, 2018. While no details surrounding the circumstances of the arrests were provided last week, the sheriff’s office said that the arrests were made following “significant recent developments” in the investigation into the toddler’s death.

During their arraignment hearing on Monday, prosecutors said that Matthew suffered “years of abuse at the hands of both defendants,” per courtroom footage posted by Detroit NBC affiliate WDIV.

“We came to realize of a scheme where both defendants conjured up this lie of previous injuries to the victim in our case, Matthew Maison, and came up with the lie about how the injury occurred prior to talking to investigators,” Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Josh Sparling said Monday, adding that both defendants “admitted” that the other abused Matthew.

Sparling alleged that Matthew was subjected to “very cruel, torturous abuse and punishment” such as “being placed in timeout on his knees where his head would be banged off the drywall” and being “locked in his room for hours on end without food or water.”

“There was a prior time where Maurice place a pillow over this child’s face and pretended like he was playing, but yet we know from the autopsy that Matthew died from blunt force trauma from all of the injuries he sustained as well as suffocation,” Sparling said.

The proceedings then took on an even more depraved tone as the prosecutor relayed another pernicious allegation levied against Maison and Houle.

“Not to mention this plan that was put forth to kill Matthew to make room for a child the two of them could have together,” Sparling said.

The Macomb County Scanner reported that during the duo’s arraignment on Monday, it was revealed that Matthew was likely beaten and choked to death, with investigators determining that his manner of death was a homicide.

“It is my opinion that Matthew Maison died secondary to blunt traumatic injuries with features of asphyxiation,” St. Clair County Medical Examiner Daniel Spitz reportedly wrote in the autopsy report. “The extent, severity, and distribution of the traumatic injuries is indicative of inflicted trauma.”

Prior to Monday’s proceedings, authorities had not released any details about the boy’s death.

The Times Herald reported that on the morning of Feb. 19, 2018, deputies and emergency medical personnel responded to the Maison residence in response to an unresponsive child in the home. Upon arriving at the scene, first responders found Matthew inside the home, already dead.

The newspaper in February 2020 submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for the 911 call placed in connection with the boy’s death, but was told that the recording system for St. Clair County Central Dispatch automatically deletes recordings after one year.

Amanda Maison’s brother, Andrew Maison, and his wife, Hilery Maison, are currently serving sentences of life in prison without the chance of parole for the 2015 murder of Andrew Maison’s 5-year-old daughter Mackenzie Maison. They were also found guilty of severely abusing his 3-year-old daughter, Makayla Maison.

Magisterial District Judge Sonya M. McKnight being escorted by police (PennLive.com screenshot) and mug shot (Dauphin County Central Booking)

A 58-year-old former magistrate judge in Pennsylvania will likely spend decades behind bars for trying to kill her boyfriend, shooting the 55-year-old man in the head while he slept in his home last year. A jury in Lancaster County on Wednesday found Sonya M. McKnight guilty on charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault in the attack that left Michael McCoy permanently blind in one eye, authorities announced.

Jurors heard two days of testimony before deliberating and convicting McKnight, who previously shot her estranged husband in the groin in an incident that was determined to be self-defense.

According to a news release from the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office, the shooting took place in the early morning hours of Saturday, Feb. 10, 2024, at McCoy’s home in the 200 block of Saddle Ridge Drive in Dauphin County.

“McKnight shot the victim in the head while the victim was sleeping in bed,” prosecutors wrote in the release. “The bullet entered the right side of the victim’s face, traversed through his head in a straight line behind and slightly below his eyes and exited the left side of his face. The victim survived the gunshot wound but is blind in one eye as a result.”

While the shooting took place in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, the Cumberland County DA’s Office assumed jurisdiction of the investigation at the request of Dauphin County DA Fran Chardo. Chardo explained that his office had a conflict of interest and could not prosecute the case because McKnight was a magisterial district judge in the county.

Chardo had initially requested that the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office take jurisdiction over the case, but the AG’s office also said it had a conflict of interest in prosecuting McKnight.

Court documents obtained by Harrisburg CBS affiliate WHP-TV provided additional details about the alleged shooting.

According to the report, McKnight and McCoy had been dating for about a year. McKnight had already moved into McCoy’s home when, on Feb. 4, McCoy decided to end their relationship. Despite asking McKnight several times to leave his home, she reportedly refused.

Also, on Feb. 4, McCoy reportedly removed the key to his home from McKnight’s key ring even though most of her clothing and personal items were in the house.

When McCoy awoke the following morning, McKnight was gone, WHP reported. However, when he returned from work, McKnight had returned, telling him she had let herself in using the spare key.

The next few days were uneventful until McCoy went out to dinner at a restaurant on the evening of Feb. 9. He reportedly told police that he believed McKnight was following him, a suspicion police were allegedly able to confirm.

When he arrived home, McKnight was sleeping on the couch, and McCoy told her he planned to call her mother to assist him in getting her to leave, The Associated Press reported.

“Michael McCoy stated that it was like she finally understood that it was over,” police wrote in a probable cause affidavit.

McCoy said he went to sleep at about 11 p.m. and woke up shortly before 1 a.m. with “massive head pain” and began screaming because he couldn’t see, per the AP.

McKnight repeatedly asked, “Mike, what did you do to yourself?”

McKnight reportedly called 911 from McCoy’s phone and said she needed an ambulance because her boyfriend could not see. When questioned by the dispatcher, McKnight “could not explain what happened and stated that she was sleeping and heard him screaming,” the affidavit states.

McCoy had been shot in the right temple, and the bullet exited his left temple. He repeatedly told police and medical personnel, “I did not shoot myself,” WHP reported.

Forensic evidence reportedly revealed the shot came from about a foot away from McCoy’s head. McKnight allegedly had gunshot residue on her hand, and the firearm used in the shooting was registered to the judge.

McCoy was reportedly released from the hospital on Feb. 11, 2024.

McKnight in 2023 was suspended without pay from her role on the bench by the Court of Judicial Discipline over numerous allegations of misconduct, the AP reported. Among the findings, McKnight reportedly directed her staff to ignore a claim against her from another woman who claimed McKnight owed her $2,100 from a loan McKnight refused to repay.

In 2019, McKnight shot her estranged husband in the groin. However, no charges were filed, and she was cleared of wrongdoing after investigators determined that she had acted in self-defense.

The boyfriend in a stomach-turning child neglect case pleaded guilty and was sentenced on Monday to his role in two children living in filth-ridden circumstances. Joel Manke, 40, is following the mother, Katie Koch, 36, with the same punishment: 10 years in prison, and 10 on extended supervision.

He had pleaded guilty to two counts of chronic neglect of a child (consequence is emotional damage), with the court dismissing two counts of false imprisonment

Koch pleaded guilty to two counts of chronic neglect of a child (consequence is emotional damage), and one count of false imprisonment. The court dismissed one count of false imprisonment, and two counts of neglecting a child (specified harm did not occur). As previously reported, cops in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, said they got 911 calls about two boys, ages 7 and 9, running naked through the street. They were covered in blood, feces, bruises, and red marks.

A caller told police a woman “yanked” one of the boys back inside.

“I’m not going to ever forget the way they looked when they came running out of that house — never forget that,” neighbor Chris Eder, who called 911, told Milwaukee ABC affiliate WISN in a July 2023 report. “The look on their faces was pure bewilderment. They were just looking all around. They could not — I don’t think they’d ever been outside before.”

Koch walked a police officer through her home. There was filth smeared all over the walls of the children’s bedroom, and the mother tried to play it off as “clay, paint, and chocolate,” but the officer noted that it was actually feces. The room, he said, smelled of feces and urine.

He described trash and garbage piling on the kitchen, and there was a mound of garbage outside the children’s room.

Five neighbors are cited in the complaint, identified by their initials, and described various information about the children.

One neighbor told police that one of the naked boys had been wandering down the sidewalk like a “caveman.” Another neighbor said they witnessed one of the children escaping through the broken bedroom window, then standing on top of an AC unit, and finally, but unsuccessfully, trying to climb a fence. Yet another neighbor said they hadn’t seen the children leave the house in some three years.

“It’s really terrible; it’s like something out of a horror movie,” Milwaukee County Assistant District Attorney Mallory Davis said in court at the time “The children were essentially confined to their room for much of their lives. And the door had a latch on the outside and the windows were boarded shut. I have finally been able to view videos and photographs of the home and I can tell you that almost every inch of their walls was covered in human feces.”

Colin Kalmbacher contributed to this report.

Insets, from left: Aquania Aleshia Estes and Pitrez Floyd. Background: Medical personnel check out an abandoned 6-year-old girl in Deltona, Florida (Volusia County Sheriff’s Office).

A Florida woman received quite the surprise Friday afternoon when she saw a dog wandering in her front yard and found an unaccompanied little girl sitting on a chair in her carport. Now the child’s mother, 27-year-old Aquania Aleshia Estes, and her 29-year-old boyfriend Pitrez Floyd are behind bars.

The neighbor called the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office around 4:30 p.m. Friday after discovering the child and dog outside her Deltona home, a press release said.

Per deputies, the girl told the neighbor she was “hot, thirsty and hungry.” She brought the girl food, water, toys and clean clothes as deputies tried to find her parents. Cops posted body camera footage of deputies’ interaction with the girl.

“You don’t know if you live nearby here?,” a deputy asked.

The girl said she wasn’t sure.

“You don’t? You don’t know mommy and daddy’s name?,” the deputy responded.

She gave cops the name “Quana.”

“Why did mommy and daddy drop you off by yourself,” the deputy queried.

The girl said: “They had to go somewhere.”

She didn’t know when they’d be coming back.

More from Law&Crime: ‘Not a viable explanation’: Couple searched ‘dent’ injuries hours before taking infant to hospital with bleeding brain, police say

“Mommy and daddy needed to go charge their cell phones,” the child told deputies according to an arrest affidavit obtained by local Fox affiliate WOFL.

She also said she did not attend school.

Medical personnel responded to the scene to take the girl’s vital signs and they came back OK, per deputies.

Cops tracked down Estes and Floyd some nine hours later, the press release said. Body camera footage showed deputies were incredulous at the situation.

“You leave your kid on the side of the f—in’ road?” a deputy asked.

Estes explained that they were homeless and “live in the forest,” the video showed.

“She got out from where she was staying at,” the mother reassoned. “I was trying to go get water and food. We have been going through a rough time.”

Deputies discovered the area where the family had been living which consisted of two tents in the woods.

Estes and Floyd were arrested on charges of desertion of a child and abandonment of an animal. Both remained behind bars as of Sunday morning on a $51,000 bond. The girl was placed into custody of her grandparents.

“This family has suffered an unspeakable tragedy and this civil suit has been initiated to protect the family and their legal rights,” said the plaintiff statement, according to The Brunswick News. “The Barrons kindly request that their privacy be respected during this difficult time. Our firm generally does not comment on pending litigation and this is particularly true in a case like this, where an investigation is still ongoing. Therefore, we have no further comment at this time.”

Staffers at Northeast Georgia Medical Center Gainesville pronounced him dead. Mericle, who runs the Mericle Dentistry, is charged with felony murder, aggravated assault under the Family Violence Act, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

According to the lawsuit, the couple had lived together at a home on the 4200 block of Bayridge Drive in the city of Gainesville, Georgia. She allegedly got into an argument with Barron on the night of the shooting.

“At no relevant time did Decedent Barron ever physically assault or batter Defendant Mericle,” the complaint said. “During the argument, Decedent Barron removed himself from the argument and retreated to an upstairs bedroom locking himself inside.”

Mericle allegedly got a gun, and as Barron was locked inside the bedroom, Mericle “negligently and/or intentionally fired at least one shot through the closed door of the bedroom.”

This fatally wounded him, but he lingered.

“Decedent Barron did not die instantaneously from the gunshot wound(s),” the complaint stated. “Instead, Decedent Barron lived for at least several minutes after he was shot, and he experienced extreme mental and physical conscious pain and suffering from the time he was shot until the time he ultimately passed away.”

The “mangled up” body of a man killed by his girlfriend’s teenage son was discovered on a busy Louisiana bridge last week — leading to murder and accessory charges for his partner, her 17-year-old and the woman’s mom — after the family tried wrapping him in a blanket and dumping him over the side with a kettlebell, officials say.

Coshelia Conley, 36, of Baker, was trying to cover up her boyfriend Gerard Nicholas Richard’s death last Thursday after her son, Da’Sean Conley, shot and killed him while the two were arguing and fighting that night, according to their arrest affidavit, which was filed by the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office and obtained by local CBS and ABC affiliates WAFB and WBRZ, respectively.

Richard was found with trauma injuries near the center of the Huey P. Long Bridge in Jefferson Parish at around 7 p.m. after Conley and her son allegedly tried dumping his body over the side with her mother, Cathy Conley, 55, who is charged with principal to second-degree murder.

Police say surveillance footage from Coshelia Conley’s apartment shows the trio “removing a trash bag believed to contain bloodied clothing items” roughly 30 minutes before Richard’s body was discovered. Authorities went to the residence and allegedly found blood and bleach in the apartment and parking lot. A forensic examination showed that the place had been scrubbed down and cleaned, WBRZ reports.

More from Law&Crime: Man killed girlfriend ‘to stop her from suffering’ in broad daylight shooting on Valentine’s Day: Police

A witness who spoke to cops said they saw two vehicles stopping at the top of the bridge to dump Richard’s body over and approached them. The cars dropped Richard in the roadway and sped off, causing his body to be run over multiple times by vehicles that were passing by, according to police. Blood smears on the bridge’s railing indicate that Coshelia Conley and her family allegedly tried dumping him over but were unsuccessful.

During their investigation, authorities learned that Da’Sean had been arguing with Richard last Thursday. Richard was allegedly “punched and beaten” by the teen before the fighting eventually spilled out of the apartment and into the parking lot. Police say the pair entered a Chevrolet Tahoe and witnesses then heard a “single gunshot” go off. The Conleys then proceeded to team up to destroy evidence and dump Richard’s body in a bid to cover up the murder, according to officials.

Richard’s body was described by investigators as “mangled up,” according to WBRZ.

More from Law&Crime: ‘Murderous intentions’: Man drove 740 miles to burn down house where the family of his ex’s new online romantic interest lived — before she even met him, police say

Security footage allegedly shows the Tahoe that Richard was killed in traveling with a 2011 GMC 1500 pickup with a red gas can in the bed along a route near the Huey P. Long bridge. Coshelia Conley wound up driving the GMC truck to meet up with detectives to be questioned about the case, with investigators immediately noticing the gas can in the back, according to WAFB.

Coshelia Conley is facing a charge of being an accessory after the fact of second-degree murder and obstruction of justice, while Da’Sean Conley is charged with second-degree murder and obstruction of justice. Cathy Conley was booked for obstruction in addition to principal to second-degree murder.

She posted bond and is now required to stay at least 1 mile away from her boyfriend.

“(The victim) had woken up to text messages and screenshots between the defendant and his mother, and this caused an argument,” the complaint says.

It’s unclear what was said in the text messages, only that they made Brantner feel “uncomfortable” and pertained to using their home as a wedding venue, according to police. Brantner, who has a daughter, allegedly told her boyfriend she didn’t want him around the child anymore.

Authorities say Brantner came home early from work last Wednesday and attacked her boyfriend immediately and “without warning.”

The two of them allegedly fought back and forth after Brantner brandished the kitchen knife and attacked him with it.

Police say she swung the weapon at him multiple times and sliced him open on his left bicep, right and left sides of his chest, and the left side of his neck.

More from Law&Crime: ‘I’m guessing she found out’: Woman upset about boyfriend’s ‘multiple relationships’ plows into him with Range Rover after giving his car a condiment bath, cops say

Brantner and her boyfriend each admitted to assaulting each other after the incident.

Investigators reported seeing red marks and a cut on Brantner’s nose afterward. She is accused of chasing her boyfriend around their home with the knife as he was attempting to pack up his things to leave. Brantner described what went down as a “heated, physical altercation” during her interviews with police. She told cops her boyfriend threatened her that day — saying, “she was not going to win and laughed that she was going to get her daughter taken away,” per the complaint.

Brantner faces up to 30 years behind bars if convicted. She’s due back in court on Feb. 13.

Jahara Malik (Miami-Dade Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation).

A 17-year-old Florida girl is behind bars after she allegedly stabbed her boyfriend to death just days before Christmas while they were allegedly “horseplaying” with a knife in a parking garage.

Court records show Jahara Malik is facing a charge of manslaughter with a deadly weapon in the Dec. 20 death of 17-year-old Yahkeim Lollar in Miami. She’s at the Miami-Dade County jail on a $50,000 bond. According to an arrest affidavit obtained by local ABC affiliate WPLG, Miami police responded to a report of a stabbing in the parking garage at Lollar’s apartment complex in the 6100 block of Northwest Sixth Court. Paramedics rushed him to a hospital where he died.

More from Law&Crime: Wife who said divorce was ‘not an option’ killed sleeping husband with .38 special before kids blow up her home invasion story

Per the affidavit, Malik was set to go shopping with a friend on the day in question. Before she left, she was looking for the pepper spray she typically used for protection but could not find it so she grabbed a knife instead, the affidavit reportedly said. After shopping she went to meet with Lollar in the parking garage. The two were “horseplaying” and she somehow ended up stabbing him in the chest.

Surveillance video allegedly shows Malik dropping the knife in the parking garage. A portion of Malik’s statement to police was reportedly redacted from the affidavit. A medical examiner deemed the death a homicide a few weeks later.

At a bond hearing, her attorney noted that Malik stayed behind to render aid after the stabbing. Malik has not been arrested before this incident, the lawyer said. The attorney told CBS affiliate WFOR that the stabbing was not intentional. NBC affiliate WTVJ reports that Malik will be tried as an adult.

The victim’s father, Darveed Lollar, said the stabbing didn’t have to happen.

“By somebody just playing, they took my boy’s life,” he told WPLG. “That’s what they said. They was playing.”

The family has been frustrated that it took so long to put Malik behind bars, despite knowing she was the one responsible for the homicide.

“They couldn’t find something to charge her with the night of when there was no question as to what happened or who done this, so I mean it’s, right now, it’s a little bittersweet,” his mother Darveed Lollar said.

Cops in Arizona have arrested a man after a 75-year-old woman was kidnapped and her boyfriend was found dead in their home.

Deputies with the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office responded around 8:10 p.m. Friday to a report of a woman being kidnapped in Pearce, which is about 80 miles east-southeast of Tucson, according to a press release. The woman said she was in the workshop in the rear of her home around 3 p.m. Friday when a masked man rearing dark clothing came inside and pointed a gun at her.

More from Law&Crime: College students lured man to campus, falsely accused him of being a pedophile, then beat him in ‘To Catch a Predator’ TikTok trend: Cops

The woman told cops the man restrained her and placed a blindfold over her eyes. She subsequently heard several “loud noises” but wasn’t sure what was happening. Once night fell, the suspect moved the victim into her 2007 silver Chevrolet Avalanche and forced her into the back seat, cops wrote. Deputies say the suspect drove away from the home. Seeing an opportunity when the vehicle stopped, the woman broke out of her restraints and made a run for it.

She was able to run to a nearby home for help.

The woman told deputies the man had walked into a Dollar General and believed she was still inside when she was describing the horrifying ordeal to police. She then advised them to check on her boyfriend at her home. Deputies tried to contact anyone inside but received no answer. They forced their way into the home and found the boyfriend, a 67-year-old man, dead.

Meanwhile, cops were able to identify the suspect as 37-year-old Rynn Prairie-Rocca, who was tracked down and caught in the area of Catclaw Road and Highway 181. Prairie-Rocca barricaded himself for about 90 minutes before the cops were able to coax him out. They transported him to the Cochise County Jail. It’s not clear what charges he is facing.

Cops did not say if the incident was random or whether Prairie-Rocca had a connection to the victims. Deputies also did not publicly identify the victims or say how the male victim died. The incident remains under investigation.

The shooting occurred on Sept. 5. The victim, in recovery, has been struggling to come up with a reason for the violence ever since.

Pinto was initially upset with her boyfriend, a mechanic, on the day in question after one of his clients showed up at their residence with a car for him to work on, according to a criminal complaint filed by the Houston Police Department. When Munoz explained the nature of his work, Pinto allegedly flew into a higher state of rage — trying to hit her boyfriend and managing to kick one of their dogs.

Munoz intercepted the attack by grabbing his girlfriend’s wrists and advising calm, authorities say. This entreaty was a too-brief salve, however, as Pinto allegedly demanded to know why Munoz touched her before shifting her outward state on a dime to ask him if he recalled a specific place they once enjoyed the sunset together.

Munoz did remember the place, a field, he would later tell law enforcement. Pinto allegedly insisted he take her there immediately.

At the requested intersection of State Highway 288 and Airport Boulevard, Munoz stopped the car, according to the court document. Then, Pinto got out and began to run away down a hill. As Munoz called to her, she allegedly called back: “Come here!”

So, he did. Then he caught up with her. Then it got weirder.

“Teach me about deer hunting,” the woman allegedly said — prompting a question from her boyfriend just before he was shot in the chest.

The complaint relays what allegedly happened next:

“Stupid ass n—-“, can be heard from the Defendant as, “She straight shot me”. The Complainant stated Defendant was said to have held the black gun, in a tilted manner. Complainant stated he was in a state of disbelief, then thought he had to run away. The Complainant stated the Defendant shot at him again, when he turned around to face the Defendant, he received another hit on his other hand, from the gun held by the Defendant. Complainant stated he held his chest and ran from the Defendant. Complainant stated he slips and falls, then looks up at the sky, waiting for the Defendant to shoot him again. Complainant stated as he laid on the ground, bleeding and in pain, he thinks in what he feels are his final moments, “Oh my God, it’s not my time, what did I do, what did I do?”

Next, Munoz says Pinto called someone on her phone to lie and say he shot her. The injured man then shouted that he did no such thing.

“Call an ambulance baby, call the ambulance,” Munoz implored Pinto.

To which she allegedly replied: “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to do you like that, I didn’t shoot you in the right places!”

Confused again, Munoz was still prepared for the worst. He then held his hand over his face as it appeared likely Pinto was gunning for the right place. This time, while protecting his head, he was shot in the hand.

Then, Munoz screamed for an ambulance again.

“I didn’t mean to do you like this, it was supposed to be quick,” Pinto allegedly replied.

Eventually, with some cajoling, Pinto allegedly helped the wounded man back into his truck before taking him to a nearby Citgo gas station where strangers got Munoz the help he needed.

Pinto was arrested on Sept. 20, after an unrelated disturbance call turned up the existence of a warrant for aggravated assault.

Bail in the case was originally set at $75,000 but recently lowered to $10,000. The state initially requested $50,000 bail and then upped their request to $1 million.

On the same day, Munoz got the bullet out of his back, Pinto got out of jail, according to Houston-based ABC affiliate KTRK.

“All I did was ever love her,” Munoz somberly told the TV station.

Now, the victim says he fears for the safety of his friends and family.

“She’s a danger to the community, to children, to family and friends and to me as well,” he told KPRC. “She’s not just a danger to me or my friends because she knows where several of my friends stay at home, but most importantly, my family. I have little nieces. My sister and nephew, My mom and my dad.”

Law enforcement has not floated a motive for the violence.

Munoz is perplexed himself.

“I have no idea,” he continued. “I’ve always worked hard to care for her as best as I could. Sometimes I wouldn’t even eat just for her to have a good plate of food. She’ll be jealous, controlling, she would isolate me from family and friends. She holds grudges.”
