Left to right: Braxton Blevins and Emily Katz (Jasper County Jail).

A Missouri couple is accused of nearly starving their 1-year-old son to death, allegedly failing to feed the special-needs toddler despite ample food in the home, with the father blaming their failures on smoking pot and “falling asleep.” Braxton Blevins and Emily Katz were taken into custody earlier this week and charged with one count each of child abuse and one count each of child endangerment, records show.

According to a probable cause affidavit, officers with the Carthage Police Department on March 1, 2025, responded to a call from Children’s Mercy Hospital regarding a 1-year-old male juvenile who had been admitted with “severe malnutrition, starvation, recurrent infections, and failure to thrive.”

Medical personnel told authorities the victim had been hospitalized multiple times in his short life for similar conditions.

“In each instance, when placed under hospital-supervised care and fed according to the prescribed protocol, the juvenile gained weight and improved,” the affidavit states. “Hospital staff stated this demonstrated the victim’s medical complications were treatable with proper care and nutrition, which Blevins was trained on and said he was providing.”

Despite the couple claiming that Blevins had been providing their son with proper care at home and following the prescribed feeding plan, officers said they recovered between 10 and 20 unused bags of the victim’s “Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN)” that was stored in the family’s refrigerator. One bag of TPN, required daily, delivers nearly 80% of the child’s required total daily caloric intake.

The bags were administered through a central line feeding tube.

“The presence of excess TPN supplies indicated the juvenile was not receiving the prescribed nutrition,” police wrote.

While hospital staff told authorities that both parents had completed the medical training required to care for their son’s nutrition needs, but said that each subsequent time the victim was hospitalized, neither parent was “consistently unable to explain the home care provided or account for the juvenile’s weight loss and deteriorating condition.”

The hospital’s safety, care, and nurturing team concluded that there was sufficient evidence that the victim was consistently missing feedings and that his repeated hospitalizations were “the result of Blevins’ neglect.”

In an interview with investigators, Blevins allegedly admitted he was aware that his son had “critical medical needs” that included the daily feeding bag. He also admitted to “missing multiple feedings, particularly during the final month of care, due to marijuana use and falling asleep,” the affidavit states.

“Blevins confirmed that during the 94 days the juvenile victim was in his custody, the child lost approximately 5.5 pounds, while corresponding medical records show the victim consistently gained weight when hospitalized and cared for by medical staff,” police wrote. “Blevins admitted he recognized he could not meet the victim’s medical needs, but continued custody due to fear of losing rights to their other child.”

Katz told police that she had struggled with maintaining cleanliness in their home and “acknowledged improper care” of the victim, his central line, and his feeding tube.

When advised of the charges she was facing, Katz “offered no reasonable explanation for the failures in care and terminated the interview,” police said.

Both parents were arrested and released after posting bond, under the condition that they have no contact with juveniles under age 18. They are scheduled to appear in court on May 28 for their arraignments, court records show.

A mother in Minnesota is heading to prison for murdering her 23-month-old son by slamming his head repeatedly into a bedroom wall and then lying to police about what happened, claiming he was run over by his father — who happened to have his car in the shop at the time.

“She took my baby’s life,” said Robert Ortez, father of Aaryan, who was killed by his mom Larena Jackson in August 2023. “I still don’t know, to this day, what really happened because she isn’t saying anything,” Ortez told Valley News Live. “I’m still trying to figure out why she did it. I don’t know why[.]”

Jackson, 31, was sentenced Monday to nearly 20 years in prison after she pleaded guilty in February to second-degree murder for her son’s death. She claimed in her written plea petition that she was intoxicated the day she fatally injured Aaryan by way of blunt force trauma.

“I was so under the influence of drugs, I did not know what was doing at the time of the crime and am entering this plea on Norgaard basis,” Jackson said, according to Valley News Live. A Norgaard plea allows Minnesota defendants to admit to a crime and to the strength of the prosecution’s case while also admitting that they cannot remember specific facts due to intoxication or other memory loss.

On the day Aaryan was fatally injured, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office got a report of a child who had been run over by a car. Jackson had called police and claimed it was Ortez who murdered the boy, not knowing that his car was being worked on.

More from Law&Crime: ‘It’s going to get f—ing ugly’: Man shoots ex-girlfriend after she tells him they need to go ‘their separate ways’ following Chili’s meetup, cops say

“I had a car in the shop that I supposedly ran over Aaryan with, but I had a different car I was driving,” Ortez told Valley News Live.

A search of Jackson’s home turned up large amounts of blood scattered throughout her Cass Lake residence and investigators also reported finding large holes in the wall consistent with the shape of a toddler’s head. Aaryan died in the hospital five days later.

In addition to murder, Jackson was also charged with first-degree assault, malicious punishment of a child and fleeing a peace officer. She was sentenced to serve at least 17 1/2 years with credit for 581 days served.

“She deserves life in prison,” Ortez concluded.

Alisha Parker (Allegheny County Jail) and the 3-month-old she allegedly beat to death (WTAE screenshot)

A 26-year-old mother in Pennsylvania has been arrested for allegedly killing her 3-month-old son, beating the child to death and then blaming the fatal injuries on her 3-year-old daughter, saying the toddler was jealous of the newborn.

Alisha Parker was taken into custody on Sunday and charged with one count of criminal homicide and one count of endangering the welfare of a child, authorities announced.

According to a press release from the Allegheny County Police Department, officers with Duquesne Police responded to a home at about 1:57 a.m. on Sunday in the 300 block of Hemlock Alley in regards to a report about an unresponsive male infant. Upon arriving at the scene, first responders said they immediately began to perform CPR on the victim and rushed him to a hospital, where he died.

Parker reportedly told police her toddler daughter fatally injured the infant, imploring authorities to “evaluate” her.

“If there’s anything that happened out of the ordinary, my 3-year-old child did it and ya’ll need to do something about that,” she told detectives, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “She’s the last person to see him alive and she’s been doing little jealousy, little things — evaluate that girl.”

According to the affidavit, Parker and her two kids had recently moved in with Parker’s cousin and the cousin’s 18-month-old child before the victim’s death.

The cousin reportedly told police that she left the house to go to work at about 5 that evening and got home at about 1 the following morning, having called Parker several times to ask her to check on her 18-month-old. The cousin said at about 11:20 p.m., she called Parker and heard the victim crying in the background.

Parker reportedly responded that the children were both doing fine and that she was drinking alcohol.

When the cousin arrived back at the home, she reportedly told police she checked on her child and then had a drink downstairs with Parker, who started vomiting soon after. The cousin told police she had a “bad feeling” about the situation and decided to check on Parker’s two kids.

The cousin reportedly started searching for the infant, who was not in his crib and then found him not breathing and “stiff to the touch and purple in color” between his older sister and the wall air-conditioning unit.

During questioning, Parker reportedly said she immediately thought her daughter harmed the infant.

“When he was found, he was found on the bed with her, so I’m like, ‘Did you grab him and try to put him on the bed with you?’ Like what was going on?” she reportedly told police.

Parker then allegedly said her daughter would “have to go” if she had harmed the victim.

“(The victim) was smiling before he went to bed, and that’s why I feel like that little (expletive) girl had something to do with it,” she said. “I’m sorry to say, that’s my kid and all, but if she did something to my son, she gotta go.”

She also said, “If there’s anything that happened out of the ordinary, my 3-year-old child did it and ya’ll need to do something about that,” The Patriot-News reported.

As she left the interview with police, Parker allegedly stated, “Guess what, I’m gonna go home and [expletive] drink more.”

Police said an autopsy determined that the child’s injuries “were inflicted by an adult” and could not have been done by her daughter. Following the release of the autopsy report, Parker was taken into custody and charged with her son’s death.

She is being held in the Allegheny County Jail without bond awaiting her arraignment.
