Jurors in North Carolina have convicted a man for murdering his mother and injuring his father in a beating he claimed was fueled by drugs and sleep deprivation.

Christopher McCullough was found guilty of first-degree murder Friday in the 2023 death of his 75-year-old mother Mary McCullough. Local ABC affiliate WTVD reported that McCullough was not convicted of other charges, included the attempted murder of his father and larceny of a dog.

He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The jury had deliberated for around seven hours after receiving the case on Thursday.

More from Law&Crime: ‘I wish you well in hell’: Daughter rejoices at sentencing of nurse mom who tortured her younger sister to death

The defendant’s father, John McCullough, testified against his son. According to a courtroom report from local CBS affiliate WNCN, the father told jurors ever since his son was seven, he was “uncontrollably violent” and had “superhuman-like strength.” They tried everything to treat his issues from sending to boarding school to stays at mental health hospitals. None of it worked. Eventually, he and his wife and obtained a domestic violence injunction against him and forbade him from entering their home.

But he ignored that order and entered the home on Aug. 8, 2023. He reportedly told jurors he was high on Adderall and other drugs and hadn’t slept in six days. He said he asked his parents for gas money. When they refused, he began beating his father — all in the presence of his 4-year-old son — though he did not admit to hurting his sickly mother, who used an oxygen tank and weighed just 100 pounds.

“Me and my dad got in a fight, I struck him twice to the ground, I noticed that my mother was face down,” he said, according to local NBC affiliate WRAL.

The younger McCullough then took his son and fled. Cops rushed to the home to aid the elder McCulloughs. There was blood everywhere and both victims were unconscious, cops testified.

“I noticed she had bruises and cuts on her arms,” Raleigh police Officer Phillip Merle said, per WNCN. “Because of the way she was laying, I noticed she had a large puddle of blood underneath her neck. My training officer asked who did this to her. And she was able to grunt out, ‘My son’.”

She was rushed to the hospital where she died nearly a week later.

Christopher McCullough’s son, now 6, was not physically injured in the incident but has experienced post-traumatic stress disorder from witnessing the incident.

“[The boy] has disclosed witnessing the defendant hurting nanny and poppy,” his therapist Tara Pawlyk reportedly testified. “That poppy was on the ground while the defendant covered his mouth, limiting his ability to breathe. He has also disclosed nanny was laying on the stairs, [which] the defendant had bashed her head against repeatedly.”

Defense Ricky Elmore said his client did not mean to kill his mother and just wanted gas money.

“John came at him the wrong way,” Elmore reportedly said during closing arguments. “His flight-or-fight clicked in and he started assaulting John.”

But no matter his state of mind, prosecutors argued, there was no excuse to kill a woman whom he supposedly loved.

“If that is a momma’s boy that left his mom for dead that way, God help that mom,” prosecutor Melanie Shekita told the jury during her closing arguments.

A 22-year-old New Hampshire man stands accused of beating his girlfriend’s 23-month-old son to death when he was alone with the boy and she was grocery shopping.

Annthoni Bliss is charged with second-degree murder in the January 2024 death of Luca Hudson, the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office said in a statement. The Keene Police Department and medical personnel responded the morning of Jan. 14, 2024, to an apartment for a young child in medical distress. They arrived to find Luca unconscious and not breathing. Paramedics rushed him to the hospital where he died three days later, just a month shy of his second birthday.

More from Law&Crime: ‘Her voice was not heard’: 13-year-old girl allegedly murdered by father who went on TV to express concern when she was still considered missing

A year-plus long investigation led to charges being filed against Bliss, who had started dating Luca’s mother about a month prior to the incident after knowing each other for several years, a probable cause arrest affidavit said. The medical examiner determined the cause of death to be blunt force trauma to the head and the manner of death homicide.

Bliss and the boy’s mother denied doing anything to hurt Luca. Bliss had been staying at his girlfriend’s apartment along with Luca and the boy’s older brother, cops said. Detectives noted that Luca showed no signs of injury in the days leading up to his death.

Through interviews and reviewing surveillance footage, investigators believe the abuse happened the night before cops responded to the apartment when Luca’s mother made a nearly hour-long trip to the grocery store, according to the affidavit. In text messages between her and Bliss while she was out, the defendant made no mention that anything may have been amiss. He said Luca’s older brother had fallen asleep.

“How’s shopping baby,” Bliss allegedly texted her.

“going to check out now,” she responded.

“Okay my love,” Bliss texted.

Luca’s mother, who has not been charged with a crime, and Bliss initially did not tell cops that the suspect was alone with the boy. In December, he told cops that he was on the phone with his sister while his girlfriend was away, but detectives could find no evidence the two ever spoke, the affidavit said. While his sister at first said she was on the phone with Bliss, she stopped talking to law enforcement, cops said. Investigators also talked to a neighbor who lived next door who said he heard Luca crying for up to an hour around the time the boy’s mother was shopping, according to the affidavit.

After the mother returned from the store, she and Bliss spent time in their bedroom. He didn’t say anything about Luca being injured, cops said. A couple hours later, Bliss walked by Luca’s room and heard vomiting. Luca had thrown up in the crib and on his pajamas. After a shower, the boy stayed with his mother and Bliss in their bed where he complained of a headache, according to cops. His mother told cops he seemed fine otherwise.

But Bliss later said in an interview with detectives that Luca’s head felt “soft” and “squishy” to him after the shower. Investigators later found he made two internet searches around that time: “2 year old, head squishy” and “2 year old head head now swollen head squishy,” the affidavit said. Despite his concerns, he never called 911; his girlfriend did so a couple of hours later, per cops.

Love true crime? Sign up for our newsletter, The Law&Crime Docket, to get the latest real-life crime stories delivered right to your inbox.

Doctors noted Luca showed little signs of external injury, however internally he suffered “substantial internal bleeding” on his brain, the affidavit stated. He also suffered from hemorrhaging in both of his eyes. His brain swelled which ultimately led to his death, doctors said. Medical examiners determined there was a “complete absence of any alternative accidental explanation,” the affidavit stated. They were able to whittle down the timing of the infliction of injury to when Bliss was alone with Luca when the mother was at the store.

Cops arrested Bliss on Wednesday evening. His next court date is scheduled for April 3. He remains at the Cheshire County Jail.

Luca’s obituary described the boy.

“Luca loved turtles, dogs, coloring and watching his favorite TV show, Mickey Mouse. He also enjoyed making a lot of noise, playing catch with balls and spending time playing with his brother,” the obituary said.

A Florida man allegedly beat a woman to death last June outside a Church’s Chicken in Tampa and left her body to rot near the drive-thru lane.

Michael Canty, 54, stands accused of second-degree murder in the death of 48-year-old Dawn Morrison. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release deputies responded to the fried chicken joint at 2219 E. Fletcher Ave. just after 10 a.m. June 18 for a death investigation. There, they discovered Morrison’s partially-decomposed body under some mulch near the restaurant’s drive-thru area.

More from Law&Crime: ‘She’s no longer here’: Man makes eerie 911 call after strangling girlfriend at storage facility, police say

An autopsy determined she died from a blow to the head. Surveillance videos indicated she died on June 15, according to a motion for pretrial detention. Several videos from neighboring businesses showed she and a man walking together behind Church’s Chicken shortly before midnight on the night in question. The cameras did not show the murder itself but picked up a woman’s voice yell “quit it, quit it” and “help,” the motion said.

Video also showed the man walk away from the area, change his shirt and throw away items in a dumpster, cops wrote. Police sent out a photo of the man in the images and a officer found a man that matched the man’s description a few blocks from the murder scene on June 20. Cops identified the suspect as Canty.

Detectives also noted he was wearing the same pants and boots along with a New England Patriots drawstring bag. Canty tried to claim he hadn’t seen the victim since the day before the murder but he changed his tune once showed surveillance images that showed him and Morrison together that night. He then claimed he left Morrison as she sat on a curb near Church’s Chicken. He said he threw away his shirt because it was “dirty,” cops said.

Officers arrested Canty for an open container of alcohol and obtained a search warrant to examine his pants and boots. The Florida Department of Corrections crime lab tested the blood for DNA and they came back as a match for both him and Morrison, according to the motion.

Jail records show Canty was arrested for failure to report as a sex offender in October and again on Feb. 6. During a post Miranda interview with detectives the defendant again denied going to Church’s Chicken with Morrison but when showed the video of him in the area he said it was possible, he just didn’t remember, court documents said. Canty denied killing the victim and could not explain why he would have her blood on his pants.

Canty also is facing a tampering with evidence charge for disposing of his shirt. He remains at the Hillsborough County Jail without bond.

“Our detectives worked tirelessly to bring justice for Dawn Morrison,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement. “Their dedication and relentless investigative efforts led to this arrest, ensuring that the individual responsible faces the consequences of their actions.”

A Maine man was undergoing a mental health evaluation after he was charged with allegedly murdering his wife and accused of assaulting his mother.

Maine State Police said in a news release that on the morning of Feb. 19, a 911 call reported an “incident” at a home in Readfield, Maine. When first responders arrived at the scene, they found the body of his wife, Margeaux Whittemore, 32, in the driveway of the home, reportedly unclothed. Inside the home, they found his mother, Dorothy Whittemore, 67, suffering from “critical” injuries. Sam Whittemore, 34, was tracked down by troopers after he allegedly fled the scene.

Police stated that Whittemore’s father, whose name was not provided by police, was not at the home at the time of the alleged incident but arrived shortly after.

Dorothy Whittemore’s condition was upgraded since she was taken to the hospital. Margeaux Whittemore’s body underwent an autopsy on Feb. 20. Her cause of death was not disclosed, but the medical examiner ruled the manner of death as homicide.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Sam Whittemore is an engineer who used to work for SpaceX. He stated that he currently uses his engineering skills to improve coral reef restoration. Margeaux Whittemore, a yoga teacher, kept an Instagram account that recorded her global travels, including with her husband, but had seemingly not been updated since October 2024.

The couple had been visiting Sam Whittemore’s parents at their home, according to the police. There was no information about what ensued to cause the alleged attacks on Sam Whittemore’s wife and mother.

Upon being taken into custody, Sam Whittemore was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation before being booked into the Kennebec County Jail. He was charged with murder and held without bail. He was initially expected to appear in court on Feb. 21, but via video conference, Whittemore’s lawyers cited a “competency issue,” according to reporting by WABI, a local CBS affiliate. The judge called for a competency evaluation as well as future status conference.

A Florida nurse likely will be blind for the rest of her life after a patient allegedly attacked her unprovoked.

Deputies from the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office wrote an arrest affidavit that the patient, later identified as 33-year-old Stephen Eric Scantlebury, had been admitted to HCA Florida Palms West Hospital under the Baker Act, which allows people to be involuntarily detained and examined for mental health issues, and was receiving treatment. Shortly before 1:30 p.m. Tuesday the nurse walked into Scantlebury’s third-floor room. Witnesses said the suspect inexplicably “jumped on top of his bed, and then jumped onto and attacked the victim,” according to the affidavit.

More from Law&Crime: Man killed his dad, hid body under blue tarp in yard telling worried son it ‘was trash’ before fleeing to Walmart

Scantlebury allegedly stood over the victim and repeatedly punched her in the face. A witness yelled for him to stop and he ran out of the room. He fled down the hallway and into the stairwell where he went down to the first floor and escaped from the hospital. The suspect, shirtless and still wearing patches from an EKG monitor, reportedly sprinted across the parking lot and into traffic on Southern Boulevard. Video obtained by local TV stations showed deputies pointing what appeared to be either Tasers or stun guns at Scantlebury and ordering him onto the ground in the middle of the road. He surrendered and deputies took him into custody.

The nurse was transported via helicopter to another hospital where she was last listed in critical condition. Doctors said “essentially every bone in the victim’s face is broken and the victim is likely to lose the use of both eyes.”

According to cops, Scantlebury had been “acting paranoid” for the last few days and “blaming people in his life for events they had nothing to do with.” That led to authorities to take him into custody under the Baker Act.

In a statement, HCA Florida Healthcare said the attack “happened within a matter of seconds.”

“Our primary concern is with our beloved colleague and we are praying for her recovery. We are also providing support to our hospital staff who are understandably shaken by this incident,” the hospital said.

Willa Fuller, executive director of the Florida Nurses Association, also released a statement expressing concern about the safety of nurses as attacks happen across the country.

“With concern about a longstanding nursing shortage, there needs to be substantive action by ALL stakeholders to prevent this kind of egregious action. We would like to see direct care nurses included in any initiatives related to violence against healthcare workers,” she said.

Scantlebury stands accused of attempted murder and is receiving treatment at a hospital. His next court date is scheduled for Tuesday.

A 39-year-old woman in Tennessee has been arrested on a spate of felony charges for allegedly kidnapping her two biological children after beating her own mother — who is also the legal guardian of the children — so badly that the older woman was left unconscious.

Sarah Myers was taken into custody on Thursday and charged with one count of child neglect of a child under age 8, two counts of custodial interference, and one count of theft of a vehicle, all of which are felonies, authorities announced. The children, 1-year-old Rico Delk and 3-month-old Elijah Delk, were both found unharmed.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) and the Metro Nashville Police Department on Wednesday evening issued an Endangered Child Alert for Rico and Elijah, stating that both children were “believed to be with their non-custodial mother, Sarah Myers.” Myers was believed to be traveling with the kids in a 1997 cream Lincoln Town Car with Tennessee license plates.

A probable cause affidavit obtained by Nashville NBC affiliate WSMV provided additional details about the allegations against Myers.

According to the report, Myers on Wednesday traveled to the home of her mother, Holly Featherman, in the Lincoln Town Car. Featherman is reportedly the legal custodian of both of her grandchildren.

At some point after arriving at her mother’s home, Myers allegedly “attacked her until she was rendered unconscious,” police reportedly wrote. Myers reportedly gathered her biological children and fled the area with them.

Several hours later, at about 11:30 p.m., police in Hermitage, Tennessee, reportedly received a call from a man requesting a welfare check at a townhouse in the area because Myers was there and reported to be suicidal. The man told police he knew Myers and that she had recently talked about ending her own life, even mentioning that she was in possession of “overdoses on prescription medication,” WSMV reported.

When police and emergency medical personnel arrived at the address, they reportedly found the older child alone inside the Lincoln parked outside the townhouse. As officers continued the search for Myers and Elijah, Nashville Fire Department medical personnel transported Rico to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital for an evaluation.

WSMV reported that police found Myers and Elijah inside a home on Old Fountain Place and promptly took her into custody. Police reportedly said that Myers gained access to the residence through a back door and, once inside, did not ever exit to check on her older child in the Lincoln.

Myeris is being held on $20,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court before Judge Jim Todd on Dec. 12, records show.

Matthew Ivester (Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office)

A Colorado man who was charged with beating his girlfriend to death in front of in-residence surveillance cameras has pleaded guilty but only to assault in the second degree. Prosecutors in Arapahoe County say they would have had trouble providing the original case of murder in the second degree, saying they could not prove that defendant Matthew Ivester, 38, knew his actions would have killed Stephanie Long, 36.

According to the plea agreement filed on Thursday, he is going to spend 10 years behind bars, will serve three years of parole, and must participate in domestic violence counseling.

More Law&Crime coverage: Man recorded himself murdering his 94-year-old grandfather in the woods of West Virginia and sent footage to family members, investigator testifies

“After reviewing this case filing, we could not prove the defendant intended to cause her death which is why we did not charge him with first-degree murder,” Eric Ross, spokesman for the District Attorney of the 18th Judicial District, told Law&Crime in an email. “Had this case gone to trial, we also recognized there would likely be some difficulties in proving the defendant knew his conduct would result in death, which is the standard (burden of proof) for second-degree murder.”

Prosecutors dropped the murder charge as well as two counts of assault in the first degree, one count of assault in the second degree, one count of assault in the third degree, and one count of harassment.

Sheriff’s deputies previously said that Ivester, ignorant that surveillance cameras were on at home, slapped Long and put his hand on her throat on Sept. 17, 2023. She complained about her head hurting and when she tried to call 911, he took the phone from her hand and stopped her when it appeared she tried to escape out the front door, documents stated.

Ivester told varying stories about what happened. All told, he blamed her drinking, her possibly using cocaine, or her attacking him, according to authorities. He also said he slapped her to wake her up after she stopped breathing, but details of his tale shifted, such as the source of the couple’s argument (supposedly some corn falling from the refrigerator), where Long supposedly stood when she allegedly headbutted Ivester, and details about their physical contact.

“He may have struck her today, but he cannot remember,” the affidavit stated. “He is not proud of this, but he has been physical with Stephanie in the past. She too has been physical with him in the past. He has put his hand over her mouth to keep her from screaming while attacking him.”

However, investigators said they found footage inside of the home showing the couple yelling at each other and calling each other names the day of the incident, with the argument turning violent at about 5:11 p.m. Ivester struck Long over the head twice with what seemed to be a pillow from the couch, documents stated. Ivester allegedly grabbed her by the throat, asking her why she was screaming. He let go of her throat, but began to violently shake her, authorities said.

When Long referenced the cameras in the room, Ivester said they were not recording, according to documents. Until 5:23 p.m., he shook her again, slapped her several times, and put a hand on her throat while Long was sitting on the couch, investigators wrote.

“At one point she does stand up and appears unsteady on her feet and starts to walk around,” authorities said. “It does appear she is bleeding from her mouth.”

Long complained about her head hurting and tried to call 911 through Google. Ivester said it was not possible but he did not call 911 on her behalf, deputies wrote at the time.

According to authorities, he took a phone from her hand.

“She also asks him to stop hitting her,” they wrote. “She also tried to possibly walk out the front door, but Matthew stops her.”

Now prosecutors say that investigators determined that Ivester attempted to save Long’s life and that he called 911.

“These facts were taken into consideration as well,” Ross wrote Law&Crime. “This plea agreement avoids future delays and potential risks associated with a trial, while ensuring the defendant serves time in the Department of Corrections. The plea agreement includes prison time, mandatory parole, and restitution. Restitution will be discussed at the upcoming sentencing hearing.

Sentencing is set for Oct. 25.

Eric Collazo (Bexar County Sheriff’s Office)

A man in Texas is accused of beating up and hospitalizing his elderly neighbor, allegedly using his own house key to mistakenly unlock and enter the home of the older man, whom he mistook for an intruder and attacked.

Eric Collazo was taken into custody on Monday and charged with one count of injury to an elderly person causing bodily harm, court records reviewed by Law&Crime show.

Deputies with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office at about 1:25 a.m. on March 25 responded to a call regarding a burglary in progress at a home in the 6000 block of Carriage Cape in San Antonio, Texas, according to an incident report obtained by The News Tribune. Upon arriving, however, deputies said they quickly realized that the home invasion appeared to be the result of an unlikely accident.

Deputies noted that the front door of the victim’s home had not been damaged in any way.

Deputies entered the home and found the victim — who is reportedly 79 or 80 years old — and said that he was limping, his clothing was torn, and food from a local Tex-Mex restaurant covered him and the floor of the apartment.

The victim told authorities that he was in the bathroom when he heard a knock on his door and then a tall man dressed in black — later identified as Collazo — entered the home and attacked him, pushing the victim into his bathtub and repeatedly striking him with a closed fist, San Antonio ABC affiliate KSAT reported.

The victim was transported to the hospital for treatment of his wounds, which reportedly included three broken ribs.

A cellphone that did not belong to the victim was reportedly recovered from inside of the victim’s bathroom, which investigators said belonged to Collazo, whom was located at the home of a neighboring home. He was attempting to get into a parked car, per KSAT.

In an interview with deputies, Collazo allegedly said that he believed he was entering his own home — even using his own key to unlock the front door — and thought the victim was a home invader, so he attacked the man.

“I don’t play around,” Collazo reportedly told authorities.

Additionally, deputies noted that Collazo emanated a “strong smell of alcoholic beverages” during the interview, per the Tribune.

Deputies checking on Collazo’s story took his key and tried to use it in the victim’s front door. To their surprise, the key reportedly worked.

“Upon deputies checking the suspect’s key to verify if in fact could open the victim’s door, the key in fact worked to open the door,” Johnny Garcia, a public information officer for BCSO, told KSAT. “It is unknown as to how the key works at the victim’s residence, however, investigators believe the issue may be related to the builder of the residences.”

M/I Homes, the company that reportedly built both homes, told KSAT they would look into the issue of one key working in two homes and get back to the station at a later date.

Collazo was booked into the Bexar County Jail and released on Thursday after posting bond of $10,000 and being ordered to have not contact with the victim. He is currently scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on May 1, 2024.

Valerie Owusu and Emmanuel Addae (Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office)

A 28-year-old mother from New York and her boyfriend, also 28, are facing decades behind bars after being convicted of killing the woman’s 5-year-old son, brutally beating the child with several different weapons and then leaving him to suffer for days without medical help before he eventually died.

A jury in Suffolk County on Friday found Valerie Owusu and Emmanuel Addae guilty on one count each of second-degree murder in the 2021 slaying of young King Owusu, authorities announced. The verdict came back after a two-and-a-half-week-long trial before Supreme Court Justice Steven A. Pilewski.

“This little boy was beaten and suffered for days at the hands of these defendants, one of whom was his own mother, until he unfortunately succumbed to his severe and extensive injuries,” Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney said in a statement, adding that Owusu and Addae “have been held accountable for this horrific crime.”

According to a news release from the DA’s office, Owusu and Addae used “at least four different instruments” to “brutally beat” King inside of their apartment in Lefrak City, Queens, over three days from March 30 to April 1.

Prosecutors said the evidence established that after the vicious attack on the defenseless boy, the couple watched for several days as King’s physical condition continued to get worse until he finally lost consciousness.

But even then, Owusu and Addae refused to seek medical attention for the boy. Instead, they chose to bring him to the home Addae’s parents who lived in an apartment in Long Island, New York.

“On April 1, 2021, Owusu and Addae brought King to a family member’s home in Brentwood and left him there to die,” prosecutors said in the release. “The Suffolk County Police Department was called after the family member returned home the same day and discovered that the boy was deceased. The child was taken to Southside Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.”

After leaving the child at the parents’ home, Owusu and Addae drove back to Queens and took the daughter they shared to the mall to go shopping, according to a report from Newsday. A search of their home reportedly turned up a belt and several broken sticks that had been used in the heinous attack.

The medical examiner who conducted the autopsy on King testified during the trial that the boy “was beaten from head to toe and that his injuries, which were too numerous to count, caused his death.”

The two are scheduled to appear in court again for their sentencing hearing on May 1. They are facing up to 25 years to life in a state detention facility.

The man seen on video attacking an Asian woman in front of a Manhattan apartment building was sentenced on Wednesday to 15 years in a New York prison to be followed by five years of supervised release, according to CBS News. The defendant, Brandon Elliot, already spent time in jail for stabbing his mother in 2002 and was released on lifetime parole in 2019.

The survivor of the 2021 attack in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood, Vilma Kari, was reportedly heading to church that day when Elliot kicked her to the ground and repeatedly stomped on her.

The defendant, who is Black, allegedly made anti-Asian statements such as “You don’t belong here.” Police arrested him after people recognized him from a local homeless shelter.

Kari, who is originally from the Philippines, sustained a fractured pelvis and contusion to the head. Now physically healed from the ordeal, she voiced grace to the defendant but never hedged her words on the severity of his actions.

“While I did not physically die that day, a portion of me did,” she said. “A portion of me that made me think I could come to America 40 years ago and be accepted for who I am. I was wrong.”
