Two Georgia men will spend the rest of their lives behind bars for the horrific murder of a homeless man found beaten, hog-tied, and anchored to the bottom of a lake, authorities announced this week.

In July 2023, John Andrew Mamph was all of 29 years old and living at an encampment in St. Mary’s — a small town located just north of the border with Florida — when he was attacked in a remote area known to locals as “Gilligan’s Island.”

During the attack, a large group of at least three and as many as four people took part in the beating, Peach State authorities allege.

“The defendants then transported Mamph to a nearby boat ramp where they put him in a boat and took him out on a lake,” the Brunswick Judicial Circuit District Attorney said in a press release. “While Mamph was still tied up, the defendants then weighed him down with multiple weights and dumped him into the lake so he would drown.”

Earlier this month, Frank Kennedy, 56, and Anthony Mistretta, 29, were convicted by a jury over their roles in Mamph’s murder.

In sum, the defendants were each convicted of one count of malice murder, felony murder, false imprisonment, kidnapping, and battery over the brutal slaying. Kennedy was also convicted of aggravated assault.

The pair were immediately sentenced after being convicted.

Mamph’s body was found sometime after noon the day following his murder by a local citizen who was jet-skiing with his family.

“The citizen observed the submerged body of Mr. Mamph in the clear water, returned to shore, and called 911,” prosecutors said.

The find was grim.

In a sense, the man’s body was not hidden, but rather, paraded.

Mamph was found tied to a cinder block at the bottom of the lake near an “aluminum roof flashing and also a black bag full of rocks tied together,” according to a police report obtained by Jacksonville, Florida-based NBC affiliate WTLV and Orange Park, Florida-based ABC affiliate WJXX, who collectively broadcast as First Coast News.

In comments to police, the man who found the body said he could “smell death” as he approached the victim, First Coast News reported.

That same night, a task force of local, county, and state law enforcement made their first arrests “based on eyewitness statements of the horrific crimes,” prosecutors said.

A total of five people were charged in relation to the murder.

Before Kennedy and Mistretta went to trial, all the other defendants pleaded guilty.

Debra Leane Dougherty, 38, pleaded guilty to one count of felony murder and was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after serving at least 30 years.

Bernice Rose McGuire, 27, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit aggravated assault and is awaiting sentencing.

The least culpable of the quintet, Megan Leigh Robison, 34, initially lied to law enforcement about what she knew after the fact about Mamph’s murder; she eventually pleaded guilty to one count of making a false statement and was sentenced to five years of probation.

Anthony Jesus Reyes-Enos, 22, is currently sitting in jail without bond for charges including felony domestic battery by strangulation, aggravated battery on a pregnant woman, tampering with a 911 call, false imprisonment, and aggravated child abuse.

“According to the female victim, the couple had been arguing, and Reyes-Enos assaulted her over two days, including punching her in the stomach,” deputies wrote. “She managed to escape the residence to call for help.”

Reyes-Enos, however, then allegedly sent her pictures of her beaten toddlers.

“After she left, Reyes-Enos reportedly sent her numerous photos of her two children, aged 1 year and 2 years, showing various bruises and wounds, indicating that they had been beaten,” authorities said.

Deputies said they got reports of the abuse on Wednesday and arrived at the 300 block of 58th Avenue East in the city of Bradenton. They said they found the children suffering lacerations, bruising, and swelling. Paramedics took them and their mother to a hospital.

Reyes-Enos’ pretrial detention hearing is set for Friday at 8:30 a.m., and the arraignment is scheduled for May 9 at 9 a.m.

A bride-to-be’s bachelorette party was ruined after she was allegedly assaulted by a stranger while waiting for a ride outside a Texas nightclub.

Canada Rinaldi, 27, suffered a concussion, a broken nose, three chipped teeth and required eight stitches to her face in an attack on Saturday night — just a month from her wedding, GoFundMe page said.

The attacker came from behind.

“So I remember walking towards the back of the car, and then I remember waking up in an ambulance,” Rinaldi told local Fox affiliate KDFW. “That’s all I remember.”

Kirsten McDowell started the fundraiser to cover hospital expenses. She was among the group of friends who were celebrating Rinaldi’s upcoming marriage.

More from Law&Crime: Pregnant woman forced to swallow lit ‘blunt’ after being dragged out of bed by man who wanted to wash her feet, cops say

“Just 24 hours earlier, she had told us she was having ‘the best trip of her life,”” McDowell wrote. “That happiness was ripped away from her in an instant, turning it into the most terrifying and traumatizing night she’s ever experienced.”

Rinaldi, who lives in Oklahoma, racked up $10,000 in medical bills, McDowell said. She continues to recover and is hopeful her injuries will be cleared up by the time her wedding comes around.

“It’s just shocking,” she told Dallas ABC affiliate WFAA. “It’s hard to believe. I feel like a lot of my experiences were taken away from me.”

Meanwhile, the suspect remains at large. She told WFAA she didn’t know the man, nor did she understand why he attacked her. Her bridesmaid, Kelly Peralta, said in an interview with the TV station that she tried to intervene and ended up getting punched herself.

“It’s just so traumatic,” she said.

While Rinaldi is forging ahead and is back home in Oklahoma, the shine of her wedding has lost some of its luster.

“I feel like I’m not excited to plan my wedding anymore,” she said, fighting back tears.

Anyone with information is asked to call Dallas police.

Five teenagers and a 20-year-old man have been indicted in the murder of a 16-year-old boy beaten and left for dead on an Arizona road after a Halloween party amid a wave of teen violence.

In announcing the arrests in the October killing of Preston Lord of three men, ages 18, 19 and 20, and three 17-year-old boys, Maricopa County Prosecutor Rachel Mitchell said evidence includes 600 pieces of video, and talked about the family’s agony as the investigation remains ongoing.

“The loss of a child is unimaginable for most of us, but to live it is a whole new level of horror,” she said.

In a statement, Preston’s family expressed gratitude to community members who provided information to secure the arrests.

“But for law enforcement’s collective efforts and community members’ invaluable cooperation, these arrests would not have happened,” the statement said. “Each arrest represents a step towards accountability and justice for our son Preston.”

Preston was fatally beaten on Oct. 28. The case came to light when police received a 911 call at 9:49 that night about an assault near 194th Street and Via Del Rancho in Queen Creek, outside Phoenix. Preston was found in the road and was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and died two days later.

Police immediately launched a homicide investigation, collected hundreds of tips, conducted interviews, and served more than 50 search warrants in the hunt for the killers. In one case, on Nov. 6, the Queen Creek SWAT team serving an arrest warrant shut down a neighborhood street in Gilbert. The warrant was for the arrest of Renner, one of the first to be arrested in the murder.

Preston’s aunt said on a fundraising website that his killing is unfathomable and he is much loved. His heart stopped, and others stepped in to try to save Preston’s life until emergency personnel arrived, but he died two days later at a hospital after suffering a severe brain injury.

“We have no words for the support and love we have been shown,” the aunt said. “Thank you for loving us and our boy.”

More charges could be coming as prosecutors also suspect a cover-up of the beating, Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s The Mike Broomhead Show.

“I think it’s fair to say that nothing’s off the table. No one is off the table in this investigation, and if we find evidence that is sufficient to bring those charges, we will bring those charges,” Mitchell said.

The news of the arrests comes as police are investigating assaults by teens beyond Preston’s killing in the Phoenix suburbs.
