A family with children was enjoying a meal at a Fremont, California, McDonald’s when a 22-year-old man allegedly slapped the mother and made a racist remark.

Prosecutors on Wednesday charged Marcus Harper with a hate crime and battery over the alleged incident. According to the Fremont Police Department, Harper, around 2:15 p.m. on April 5, walked up to a mother, father and two children as they ate in McDonald’s.

More from Law&Crime: Florida man takes 8-inch chef’s knife out of package to repeatedly stab woman criticizing his ‘uncontrolled kids’ while in line at supermarket butcher’s counter

“Harper initially took food from their table and ate it in front of them ,” cops wrote in the press release. “Harper walked away from the table for a brief time before returning to the table to slap the adult victim on her face while standing behind her.”

Prosecutors allege Harper then stated: “You Indians need to go back to your country.”

The defendant then threw a sauce packet at one of the children, a 9-year-old girl, before leaving. Cops obtained an arrest warrant and located him sitting alone in his vehicle in the area of Marshlands Road and Thornton Avenue on Tuesday. They took him into custody without further incident.

Local CW affiliate KRON obtained a police report that said Harper did not deny his actions. He reportedly said that the father gave him a “weird feeling” and felt as if he wanted him to slap her. Harper claimed he blacked out at the time of the alleged assault.

Alameda County District Attorney Ursula Jones Dickson released the following statement to local Fox affiliate KTVU:

“This act of hate based upon the perceived national origin of these victims is completely unacceptable,” she said. “The message needs to be clear that such behavior will not be tolerated, and those who commit hate crimes will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

As of Wednesday, Harper remained at the Santa Rita Jail.

Jammacar Rodkesh Gayle, 40, was convicted by a jury of his peers in March after a three-day trial in Florida’s 20th Judicial Circuit.

On Monday, the defendant was sentenced to 12 years in prison on one count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon or causing great bodily harm, the state’s attorney announced in a press release.

The knife attack occurred near the butcher’s counter at the Milan Supermarket on Tamiami Trail in Port Charlotte — a large, census-designated place some 30 miles northwest of Fort Myers.

On June 9, 2023, Gayle was shopping at the store with his children and ex-wife, where they proceeded toward the meat section in the back. Later, a woman entered the store and stood in line waiting to buy meat at the counter near the family, according to an arrest affidavit issued by the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office.

“At some point there is a verbal altercation that ended up being over the kids’ behavior and the victim said something to [Gayle’s ex-wife] and they ended up arguing,” the affidavit reads. “Gayle stood back and did not get involved.”

The contretemps then cooled down for a few moments.

After getting half her meat order, the victim left the counter and then returned to pick up the rest, passing by Gayle’s ex-wife.

“Words are exchanged between the two females and [Gayle’s ex-wife] pushes the victim,” the affidavit goes on. “The victim pushes [Gayle’s ex-wife] back and Gayle steps up to the victim and as she turns around towards him, the victim bumps into Gayle.”

After being touched, the defendant and the victim finally got into an argument together. Next, the victim can be seen on surveillance footage pushing Gayle against the meat cooler and walking past him, according to law enforcement.

More Law&Crime coverage: ‘He was nearly finished’: Instacart shopper kills police officer at supermarket during grocery run, cops say

Incensed, Gayle grabbed a cast iron pan from a shelf in the store and swung it toward the victim — but his oldest daughter intercepted and took the pan from her father, the affidavit says. Undeterred, the defendant then grabbed a “packaged 8′ chef knife from the shelf,” removed the knife from its packaging, and the attack began in earnest, according to the court document.

“In the video, I observe Gayle swing, over hand twice at the victim, then twice across the victim and then twice in an over hand motion again,” the detective writes in the affidavit.

After the stabbing, Gayle fled to the parking lot, authorities noted. The victim, though severely wounded, followed after him in an attempt to photograph the license plate on his vehicle. Still brandishing the knife, Gayle threatened the woman again and then left with his family.

First responders found the victim in dire straits.

More Law&Crime coverage: Florida man allegedly commits 2 felony thefts within 15 minutes — at the same Publix supermarket

“The victim was bleeding profusely from her abdomen and head,” the affidavit reads. “While responding deputies were providing first aid to the victim, she informed deputies that she had been attacked by a black male … with a large chef knife that he got from the store shelf after a verbal altercation over the suspect’s uncontrolled kids.”

In an interview, the store owner, who witnessed the incident, said both the Gayle family and the victim were regular customers.

Ultimately, the victim had to be airlifted to a nearby hospital where she received lifesaving treatment, according to prosecutors.

Meanwhile, Gayle haphazardly tried to conceal the crime.

“He put his bloody clothes into a trash bag and then drove to New York,” the press release reads. “The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office used surveillance video to identify the make and model of the suspect’s car and were able to utilize license plate readers in the area, to pinpoint his residence and learn his identity.”

After law enforcement executed a search warrant, the knife used in the attack and blood-spattered clothes were found still hidden in the trash at Gayle’s residence in North Port — a medium-sized city located a few miles north of Port Charlotte.

The defendant was arrested the next day in the New York City borough of Queens by U.S. Marshals and extradited back to the Sunshine State.

A woman was recently arrested in Florida after attacking a man with a can of Pringles and possibly causing him “permanent disfigurement,” law enforcement in the Sunshine State say.

Shanika Serdahl, 28, stands accused of one count of aggravated battery, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident occurred on Thursday, at a 7-Eleven on International Drive in Orlando, according to an arrest affidavit.

A deputy arrived in response to a call about a “physical fight” at the convenience store, the court document says.

The victim, a man, told the deputy that “a male approached him and made a comment to him about his vehicle,” according to the affidavit. Then, inside the store, the victim asked the defendant “if she was with the man” who had inquired about his vehicle, police said.

Somewhat abruptly, the narrative accounts for violence.

“[The victim] stated that Shanika eventually struck him in the eye with a Pringles chip can and took off running,” the affidavit reads. “While speaking with [the victim] I observed that [the victim] had a significant cut on his right eyebrow and below his eye, causing him to bleed. The cut looked significant and appeared that it would leave a scar and permanent disfigurement.”

More Law&Crime coverage: ‘Released her dogs at them’: Florida woman allegedly used Great Dane to attack investigators after stealing electricity

Later, law enforcement caught up with Serdahl south of the 7-Eleven.

After the victim identified her as the alleged culprit, she was detained and brought back to the scene of the crime, authorities say.

“I asked Shanika what happened and she advised me that while inside the 7-Eleven [the victim] was saying rude things to her and being disrespectful,” the deputy writes. “Shanika said [the victim] at one point called her a c–––. Shanika admitted that due to [the victim] being rude to her she hit him.”

More Law&Crime coverage: ‘Not a motherly thing to do’: Florida woman allegedly caught hiding runaway teenage boy she wanted to adopt in a condo where ‘the two would drink alcohol together’

The man who was attacked, however, said he was not being rude at all.

“As I pulled up to the 7-Eleven there was a guy sitting outside and as I got out the car he said something under his breath so I ignored him and walked into the 7-Eleven,” the victim told the deputy. As I was standing in line there was a young lady in front of me talking to the cashier she seemed like she has been drinking. So she stood to the side and as I was about to pay for my drink and I asked the young lady if she knew the guy outside.”

The victim told police Serdahl then “turned around and hit me in my eye and above my eye with a Pringles chip can and split my brow above my eye.”

A 7-Eleven employee subsequently vouched for the victim’s version.

“A male customer got in the head by a can of Pringles,” the employee told the deputy. “All the guy was doing [was] informing me of another male customer that was laying down on the side of the building. The female called the guy a b–––– and whacked him with the Pringles which literally went flying down one of the aisles. The male customer’s eyebrow was split open.”

The deputy said the defendant was eventually found with a can of Pringles on her person. He asked her if she paid for that can and she allegedly replied that “she was unsure,” according to the affidavit.

“[D]ue to not having immediate access to the cameras Shanika was not charged for the petit theft due to the lack of evidence at the time of arrest,” the deputy’s report concludes.

The defendant was arrested that same day.

Serdahl is not listed as an inmate in the Orange County Jail as of this writing.

An Indiana woman attacked a toddler but insists that she did not hit the child very hard, authorities in the Hoosier State say.

Joyce Perkins, 31, stands accused of battery on a person less than 14 years old, according to the Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office.

The underlying incident occurred on Nov. 4, 2024, at Kiddie Academy of Greenwood on South Morgantown Road in Greenwood — a medium-sized city and part of the broader Indianapolis metro area.

Perkins first lost her job at the day care. The director told Johnson County sheriff’s deputies that he fired the defendant on the day the incident occurred, according to court documents obtained by Indianapolis-based NBC affiliate WTHR and Fox affiliate WXIN.

The director followed up by sending a video to law enforcement.

The footage allegedly shows a 2-year-old boy spitting on Perkins while she tends to another child. Then, the since-fired worker is seen “instantly” slapping the boy’s “face hard enough to spin him around and into a cabinet behind him,” according to a probable cause affidavit.

“I had to smack him because he spit all in my face,” the defendant is allegedly heard saying in the video.

Prosecutors say the video also contains audio of Perkins saying: “hell no” and “ya, he spit in my face, I don’t do that.”

More Law&Crime coverage: Day care worker repeatedly kicked toddlers in the back, 134 instances of abuse caught on film: Sheriff

After the alleged slap, Perkins is allegedly seen taking the boy out of the room by his shirt, according to law enforcement.

“Speaking generally, video evidence is very strong evidence and it’s good to have it,” Johnson County prosecutor Lance Hamner told WRTV. “I feel that as a prosecutor our job is to protect. It’s not to just enforce the law. The job requires we use the law to protect people.”

A detective reviewed the footage and eventually caught up with the defendant at her home earlier this week.

During an interview, Perkins allegedly told the detective she had “a reflection, a reflex,” to the child spitting on her. The defendant allegedly went on to say: “I didn’t hit him bad, you know, I just gave him a little small tap. He didn’t cry or nothing.”

Perkins allegedly said the boy was “acting up” on the day in question — by throwing toys while others helped to tidy the premises. The defendant allegedly said the child spit on when she asked him directly to help clean up.

More Law&Crime coverage: Day care teacher allegedly caught on video at work treating 3-month-old boy like ‘rag doll’ and ‘aggressively’ shaking baby bouncer until he went ‘limp’

The defendant allegedly went on to claim that she had not actually hurt the boy and allegedly may have defended her actions by saying: “he was the one spitting on me and that’s battery too.”

The detective is said to have responded that the woman’s alleged batterer was only two years old.

“It was my mother’s instinct to react,” the defendant allegedly reiterated. “He didn’t cry or nothing.”

Perkins was also reported to two state agencies.

More Law&Crime coverage: Georgia home day care owner arrested for second time in 2 weeks on over 30 child abuse allegations

In a statement, the day care center addressed the incident:

Recently, an isolated incident occurred involving a staff member who failed to meet our professional and ethical standards. We acted immediately, terminating her employment and reporting the matter to the Department of Child Services (DCS). The state licensing authority conducted a thorough investigation and confirmed that we responded appropriately and took every possible measure within our control to address the situation.

The law enforcement investigation is said to be ongoing.

Perkins was not detained as of this writing, jail records show.

“I won’t pay s—,” Michael Nixon, 42, of Virginia, allegedly told the bartender, according to the incident report, which was obtained by ABC affiliate WPLG. “English, motherf—er. I live in America,” Nixon allegedly said. “You speak English.”

The Arlington resident reportedly traveled from Virginia to Miami Beach sometime before Sunday night, when police say the racist attack occurred. He was allegedly at Norman’s Tavern at 6770 Collins Ave. on North Beach and racked up a $130.81 tab while there, which the bartender was trying to get him to pay.

“Hola,” Nixon allegedly said when first speaking to the worker.

“English, b—-,” he told the man. “F—ing Trump is going to deport your a–.”

Entry points in El Paso and elsewhere have reportedly been shut down while border officials wait to get word on what to do.

“I will declare a national emergency at our southern border,” Trump said during his inaugural speech.

The executive order handed down by Trump late Monday night asked the U.S. armed forces to repel “forms of invasion” at the U.S.-Mexico border, including illegal migration and drug trafficking, which were highlighted in online proclamations.

During his alleged tirade, Nixon exchanged words with the bartender and another employee, whom he targeted with a punch to the face, according to cops. His “increasing(ly) aggressive behavior” led workers to allow him to leave to “prevent further physical assaults,” the incident report says.

As Nixon went to leave, he “intentionally struck” the bartender by “forcefully moving his body forward, specifically his left shoulder, towards (him),” police allege.

Nixon allegedly left Norman’s Tavern but later returned while cops were responding.

Online court records show that he was taken into custody on a felony charge of battery with prejudice and misdemeanor counts of criminal mischief, defrauding an innkeeper and disorderly conduct. He was still locked up Tuesday on a $5,450 bond.

A Florida woman is behind bars for stealing from a Dollar General and attacking a pregnant woman, Sunshine State authorities say.

Maria Gritsaev, 34, stands accused of one count each of aggravated battery on a pregnant victim and petit theft by shoplifting, according to Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Jail records.

The incident occurred in early January, according to investigators. The defendant was arrested on Thursday.

On Jan. 2, deputies asked the public for help identifying the suspect. Law enforcement said the incident occurred at a store on Market Avenue at around 10:30 a.m. that day in Palm Coast – a medium-sized city roughly 30 miles north of Daytona Beach.

The suspect is said to have been a white woman who appeared to be in her late 40s. She was wearing a light-colored hat and scarf at the time. Police also noted she had long blonde hair – which authorities surmised might have been a wig. The wanted woman allegedly left the scene of the crime riding a silver mountain bike.

Law enforcement shared a blurry photograph of the alleged culprit seen from above when making their plea for citizen engagement. And, in the end, it was such engagement that moved the case forward.

“Here’s proof that just because the photo is bad doesn’t mean we can’t overcome it,” the sheriff’s office said in an Instagram post after an arrest was made. The post goes on to credit the defendant’s arrest to “an eagle-eyed social media user.”

More Law&Crime coverage: ‘My knee hurts’: Florida woman arrested after allegedly calling 911 over 30 times in a single year

Speaking with law enforcement, the Dollar General employee said she is eight months pregnant and that Gritsaev “stole a lighter and pushed her,” according to a charging affidavit obtained by Law&Crime. The defendant allegedly frequents the store, the employee added.

“[The store employee] stated that the female (suspect) did not have enough money to purchase the lighter, which costs approximately $2.00,” the court document reads. “[The employee] advised that when the suspect attempted to walk out of the store with the lighter without paying for it, she stood in front of her. [The employee] advised that the suspect then grabbed her and then pushed her out of the way.”

The defendant for her part, admitted to being in the store that day but denied what happened with the lighter.

More Law&Crime coverage: ‘She actually took the check by force’: Florida woman allegedly injures 83-year-old employer, steals her money and holiday cards after being denied $500 Christmas bonus

“Maria advised she was at the Dollar General and paid for the lighter,” the affidavit goes on. “Maria advised that a female employee [redacted] stood in front of her at the entrance. Maria further advised that she did not push anyone. Maria further advised that she was able to leave the store after getting around the female employee [redacted] and left the area because she did not want to be involved in any confrontation.”

Law & Crime contacted the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office for additional details on this story, but no response was immediately forthcoming at the time of publication.

The defendant is being detained in the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility on a combined $6,000 bond.

A teenage boy in Florida admittedly sexually assaulted a 91-year-old woman earlier this year, court records filed this week show.

Jesse Stone, 14, broke into the home of the nonagenarian victim over the summer, according to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

The woman woke up around midnight and saw someone “sneaking through her home,” the sheriff’s office said in a press release.

Then, the adolescent criminal brutally attacked his victim.

“In a cruel act of violence, she was beaten and sexually battered,” Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods said at the time.

The incident occurred on June 9, near the town of Reddick — a tiny town some 90 miles northwest of Orlando.

In the immediate aftermath of the shocking incident, law enforcement offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

By June 17, the assailant was in custody.

The sheriff offered a lengthy statement taking stock of the case:

I told everyone last week that we would find the person responsible, and we have. I’m very proud of the hard work that my detectives and forensics team have done on this case to bring about a quick closure. This type of unimaginable violence is still shocking to me after all of my years in law enforcement. The Reddick community has shown its resilience and support for us and their community through all of this. I also want to thank all of the citizens that sent in tips and leads in this case. It came as a shock that any individual would commit such an act on a 91-year-old, but it is truly disturbing when we see the young age of the arrestee. Although I firmly believe he should be held accountable for his crime, as a father, my compassion goes out to his family. Hopefully his arrest will lead to getting him help that prevents any further such acts.

A neighbor of the victim provided law enforcement with videos of Stone, the sheriff’s office said, according to Tampa-based NBC affiliate WFLA. Then, the neighbor saw the teenager riding his bike — wearing the same clothes he had on the night of the attack.

Investigators said they used DNA evidence and results from a rape kit to confirm Stone was, in fact, the culprit responsible for the crime.

“It’s a very meticulous, tedious process, but a lot of agencies don’t have that resource,” Marion County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Paul Bloom told the TV station. “A lot of their DNA is sent off and the results take a long time. We don’t want that. We don’t want time with this person out there to potentially attack another victim.”

During a subsequent interview with law enforcement, Stone allegedly admitted to breaking in, punching, and groping the woman.

The teenager was charged as an adult with one count each of sexual assault by someone under 18 years toward a victim over the age of 12 and burglary of a dwelling with battery, court records show.

He originally pleaded not guilty — but changed his plea on Nov. 7 before Fifth Judicial Circuit Judge Lisa Herndon.

Stone’s sentencing hearing is slated for Dec. 19.

A 33-year-old woman allegedly took the fun out of a festival when she strangled a 12-year-old girl during an altercation over line-cutting.

It happened shortly before 8 p.m. on Friday during the West Side Nut Club Fall Festival in Evansville, Indiana. Police detectives were working security for the event when they saw an argument unfold between someone later identified as Kristin Burnett and another woman. Burnett was apparently upset that someone had cut in front of her while in line for an amusement ride, cops said in a probable cause arrest affidavit.

During the spat, a 12-year-old girl in front of the women decided to play peacekeeper and offered up her spot in the line. Thinking Burnett didn’t hear her, she approached the defendant in a “non-threatening manner,” the affidavit said.

“I observed Burnett grab [the victim] by the throat and forcibly push her against the gate of an amusement ride,” a detective wrote.

Three cops ran to Burnett to get her off the girl. A man, Michael A. Flemming Jr., also held Burnett away from the cops trying to detain her, the affidavit said. The detective flashed his badge to Burnett and Flemming to let them know he was a cop.

After taking both into custody, detectives interviewed the victim. She told cops after Burnett allegedly grabbed her throat her “breathing was restricted,” the affidavit said. She also couldn’t feel her nose. Four other witnesses corroborated the victim’s story and confirmed what detectives had witnessed, cops wrote.

Michael Flemming Jr. (Vanderburgh County Jail).

Cops took Burnett to the Vanderburgh County Jail on charges of battery of a person under 14 years old and disorderly conduct. She has since bonded out. Her next court hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.

Flemming took a “mule kick” at police officers trying to detain him, causing a cop’s knee to bleed. He was arrested on charges of battery against a public safety official, resisting law enforcement causing bodily injury and obstruction of justice, Evansville NBC affiliate WFIE reports.

The festival has been going on in Evansville for over 100 years. It began in 1921 when a couple of West Side business owners decided to have an event “for the betterment of the West Side of Evansville; also for the Betterment of Evansville as a whole.”

RIDGECREST, Calif. — The Bureau of Land Management today approved the Alta Wind Battery Energy Storage System right-of-way in Kern County. The project is designed to deliver 150 megawatts of electricity to the California power grid, store up to 1,200 megawatt hours, and increase the reliability and availability of clean power produced by the existing Alta Wind Energy Center.

“Battery energy storage projects like Alta Wind support the delivery of reliable and increasingly clean energy to consumers,” said BLM California Acting State Director Gordon Toevs. “The BLM continues to advance clean energy development and enhance America’s energy security.”

The 25-acre project will be located entirely within the existing right-of-way issued for the Alta 1 Wind Facility. The battery systems will be enclosed in climate-controlled containers with individual clean gas fire suppression systems. Additional information and project documents are available at the <a href="https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Feplanning.blm.gov%2Feplanning-ui%2Fproject%2F2030259%2F510&data=05%7C02%7Csdenos%40blm.gov%7Cd5e0194e9a0c4a7ca56208dc36f16da1%7C0693b5ba4b184d7b9341f32f400a5494%7C0%7C0%7C638445657749825915%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=aVnpsOm%2FBTSvi%2FBL4YrvRzJ83EDdLQ4fITqH7oMa9K4%3D&reserved=0" target="_blank" title="Original URL: https://eplanning.blm.gov/eplanning-ui/project/2030259/510.
