An Arizona man is facing felony aggravated assault charges for an “unprovoked” attack he allegedly unleashed on a stranger, with cops saying he grabbed an individual from behind and “completely removed” their eyeball from the eye socket after the victim walked by and asked the suspect, “How are you doing?”

“The victim stated that during this incident he was in fear for his life and safety, believing that Daniel could have killed him,” police allege in court documents obtained by local Fox affiliate KSAZ, which outline the charges against Daniel Lanks, 39, who is accused of carrying out the attack on Monday, April 14, near 48th Street and Broadway Road, the station reports.

“The attack was completely unprovoked, and he did not threaten Daniel, challenge him, and did not have any form of weapons to be perceived as a threat,” the documents say, according to KSAZ. Lanks allegedly pummeled the victim with punches to his face after removing his eyeball, causing a fractured jaw.

“The victim stated this loss of the use of his right eye and fractured jaw will forever impact his quality of life and is unsure if he will be able to work again or perform many basic life functions,” the charging documents say.

Lanks was allegedly near a shop at the intersection of Broadway and 48th Street when the victim crossed his path early Monday at around 1 a.m., KSAZ and AZFamily report.

“How are you doing?” the victim allegedly asked him.

Police say Lanks responded by telling the man he would “whoop his a—” as the individual walked away from him.

“Post Miranda, Daniel told detectives to shut the f— up and that he did not understand his rights,” per the court documents.

Lanks was booked on felony aggravated assault charges. He had been released from custody on his own recognizance just one week prior to the alleged attack for a separate arrest and charge of aggravated assault and organized retail theft for a prior incident that allegedly occurred in March, KSAZ reports.

Lanks is currently being held on a $500,000 for the April 14 attack.

Left: President-elect Donald Trump on “Meet the Press” Sunday, Dec. 8, 2024 (NBC News/YouTube). Right: U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announces lawsuit against New York’s immigration policies from Washington, D.C. on Feb. 12, 2025 (YouTube).

President Donald Trump handed down orders to Attorney General Pam Bondi on Friday directing federal law enforcement to go after lawyers and law firms that challenge his administration with “frivolous, unreasonable, and vexatious litigation.”

The White House issued a memo late Friday announcing Trump’s memorandum, which was titled, “Preventing Abuses of the Legal System and the Federal Court.” In it, the Trump administration warns that lawyers and firms engaging in actions that violate the laws of the United States or rules governing attorney conduct “must be efficiently and effectively held accountable.”

“Accountability is especially important when misconduct by lawyers and law firms threatens our national security, homeland security, public safety, or election integrity,” the memo states. An example of “grossly unethical misconduct” is included in the memorandum, with Trump administration officials claiming it’s “far too common.”

“For instance, in 2016, Marc Elias, founder and chair of Elias Law Group LLP, was deeply involved in the creation of a false ‘dossier’ by a foreign national designed to provide a fraudulent basis for Federal law enforcement to investigate a Presidential candidate in order to alter the outcome of the Presidential election,” the memo alleges. “Elias also intentionally sought to conceal the role of his client — failed Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton — in the dossier.”

According to the White House memo, Bondi and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi L. Noem have both been instructed to weigh legal action for “ethical misconduct” committed by junior attorneys to “partners or the law firm when appropriate.” It says when the attorney general determines conduct by an attorney or law firm in litigation against the Trump administration “warrants seeking sanctions or other disciplinary action” the attorney general shall — in consultation with “any relevant senior executive official” — recommend to the president additional steps that may be taken. This includes “reassessment of security clearances” held by the lawyers in question or termination of any federal contract for which the relevant attorney or law firm has been hired to perform services.

“I further direct the Attorney General, in consultation with any relevant senior executive official, to review conduct by attorneys or their law firms in litigation against the Federal Government over the last 8 years,” the memo says.

“If the Attorney General identifies misconduct that may warrant additional action, such as filing frivolous litigation or engaging in fraudulent practices, the Attorney General is directed to recommend to the President, through the Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy, additional steps that may be taken,” the order adds.

More from Law&Crime: ‘Commander Reyes’: Trump defense secretary mocks judge who ruled against transgender ban, says she should train Green Berets since she’s ‘now a top military planner’

Trump’s memo notes “Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 11 prohibits attorneys from engaging in certain unethical conduct in Federal courts.” Specifically, it states that attorneys must not present legal filings “for improper purpose[s]” — including “to harass, cause unnecessary delay, or needlessly increase the cost of litigation,” the memo says.

“Unfortunately, far too many attorneys and law firms have long ignored these requirements when litigating against the Federal Government or in pursuing baseless partisan attacks,” the order claims. “To address these concerns, I hereby direct the Attorney General to seek sanctions against attorneys and law firms who engage in frivolous, unreasonable, and vexatious litigation against the United States or in matters before executive departments and agencies of the United States.”

Trump’s reasoning for involving Noem is that the immigration system is likewise “replete with examples of unscrupulous behavior” being shown by attorneys and law firms challenging Trump, the document says.

The memo claims the “immigration bar” and “powerful Big Law” pro bono practices frequently “coach clients to conceal their past or lie about their circumstances” when asserting asylum claims. The White House condemns it as an attempt to “circumvent immigration policies” and “deceive the immigration authorities and courts” into granting them relief that is “undeserved” and not needed.

The memo says, “Gathering the necessary information to refute these fraudulent claims imposes an enormous burden on the Federal Government. And this fraud in turn undermines the integrity of our immigration laws and the legal profession more broadly — to say nothing of the undeniable, tragic consequences of the resulting mass illegal immigration, whether in terms of heinous crimes against innocent victims like Laken Riley, Jocelyn Nungaray, or Rachel Morin, or the enormous drain on taxpayer resources intended for Americans.”

More from Law&Crime: ‘Ensure compliance with obligations’: Air Force members press another federal court to issue an additional restraining order blocking Trump’s transgender military ban

Legal experts, prosecutors and former Justice Department officials have called out the Trump administration for issuing the Friday order. Former Associate Attorney General Vanita Gupta, who served in the Obama and Biden administrations, told The Washington Post she believed the memo was a dangerous threat to the judicial system.

“I have both sued and defended the government with equal vigor,” Gupta said. “This presidential memorandum attacks the very foundations of our legal system by threatening and intimidating litigants who aim to hold our government accountable to the law and the Constitution.”

New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin blasted the memo as “an unprecedented and frankly outrageous attempt to threaten lawyers simply for doing their jobs” — saying, “The president has consistently violated the law and hurt our residents in very real and direct ways — cutting their healthcare, denying their kids a quality education, and making them less safe. No baseless threat will stop me from doing my job, which is to protect my state from harm.”

Sue Hendrickson, president and CEO of the nonprofit rights organization Human Rights First, told the Post she felt the new memo was aimed at silencing Trump’s legal opposition directly.

“This policy is likely to go after cases that are opposed to [Trump’s] political views versus cases that are meritless,” Hendrickson said. “It was clear that [Trump] has had difficulty controlling the judges with lifetime appointments and now is going after the legal systems and the lawyers who are representing individuals in cases and in connection with immigration cases, asylum cases and efforts to protect due process and the First Amendment.”

Attempts by Law&Crime to reach the Trump administration for comment Sunday were unsuccessful.

A Florida woman is behind bars after stealing electricity and siccing her large dog on utility workers who confronted her, according to law enforcement in the Sunshine State.

Tiffany Perkins, 28, stands accused of myriad crimes including one count each of aggravated assault, aggravated battery, creating or maintaining a nuisance, keeping a nuisance, larceny related to a utility, grand theft, animal cruelty, burning unpermitted materials, operating an unpermitted landfill, misusing the 911 system, resisting an officer with violence, resisting without violence, as well as two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill.

The incident occurred Feb. 25 at a residence on Sugar Pine Loop in Lake Wales – a medium-sized city in central Florida, according to a press release issued by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

A deputy arrived at the home late in the morning in response to a call from two Duke Energy workers, the sheriff’s office said.

The energy company’s employees were at Perkins’ residence to investigate what appeared to be possible theft of utilities, according to law enforcement.

The defendant allegedly did not appreciate the inquiry.

“Tiffany released her dogs at them,” the sheriff’s office wrote in the press release – alleging Perkins used her dogs to attack the utility workers.

More Law&Crime coverage: ‘Not a motherly thing to do’: Florida woman allegedly caught hiding runaway teenage boy she wanted to adopt in a condo where ‘the two would drink alcohol together’

After the deputy arrived and began to speak with her, however, Perkins allegedly called 911 herself.

“As the deputy moved toward Tiffany to arrest her, he was attacked by a Great Dane, causing injury to his arm and eye,” the sheriff’s office alleged.

Later, additional deputies arrived.

More Law&Crime coverage: ‘I ain’t hard to find’: Florida woman and sheriff’s office engaged in social media taunting battle over warrant

The defendant allegedly continued to resist arrest, however, and was subsequently Tasered, according to law enforcement sources cited by Tampa-based Fox affiliate WTVT.

Eventually, Perkins was taken into custody.

“The investigation determined that Tiffany was indeed stealing electricity from Duke Energy after they had cut the power from her home,” the sheriff’s office press release continues. “Animal Control responded and recovered a second Great Dane that was in extremely poor health. Both Great Danes were removed from the property.”

The defendant was also charged with improper waste tire disposal, having an open septic tank, and trespass that does not involve a structure or a conveyance.

Perkins is currently being detained in the Polk County Jail on a combined $48,500 bond, sheriff’s office records show.

An Oregon man who attacked a man with a hatchet outside the victim’s home after a road rage incident has learned his fate.

Joseph K. Chastain, 33, will spend 42 months — or three and a half years in prison — for the 2023 attack that wounded Matt Griffin. Chastain learned his fate on Friday after pleading guilty to charges of attempted assault in the first degree.

“Mr. Chastain was intent on assaulting me, and after a violent attempt on my life, he succeeded,” Griffin told Multnomah County Circuit Judge Kelly Skye, The Oregonian reported.

The road rage incident happened on Aug. 12, 2023, just before 11 p.m. when Chastain cut Griffin off on a road, and Griffin honked at him.

Then, Chastain chased after him.

At Griffin’s home, Chastain jumped out of his vehicle with something dark in his hand. Griffin said he thought it was a gun and that he was about to be murdered, local CBS affiliate KOIN reported. Griffin grabbed a hatchet, but Chastain took it and attacked him with it before driving off. Griffin suffered two broken bones and a 6-inch gash on his leg that police put in a tourniquet to control the bleeding.

More Law&Crime coverage: ‘How did you guys find out about this?’: Man shocked when police find dead brother’s body in his home with ‘hatchet still in his head,’ authorities say

Police arrested Chastain months later at his home, where they found the hatchet.

At trial, Chastain’s attorney claimed the victim’s wound was self-inflicted, saying a biomechanics expert and radiologist determined it was consistent with a “swing and a miss” injury.

Griffin called out that claim in court.

“Not only is Mr. Chastain a rage-filled manic, he’s also a disgusting liar,” Griffin said, The Oregonian reported.

Prosecutors said there was no doubt about what happened that night, the newspaper reported.

Inset: Roosevelt Loray Johnson (Riviera Beach Police Department). Background: The scene where he allegedly killed a stranger using a barbecue fork (WPBF).

A 29-year-old man in Florida is accused of killing a complete stranger, fatally stabbing the victim multiple times in the head and neck with a pronged barbecue fork failing to attack his own mother and cousin.

Roosevelt Loray Johnson was taken into custody on Monday and charged with one count of first-degree murder in the apparently unprovoked attack, court documents reviewed by Law&Crime show. According to a probable cause affidavit, officers with the Riviera Beach Police Department at about 6 p.m. on Monday responded to a report of an armed subject at the Berkley Landing Apartments in the 3100 block of Riviera Beach, which is about 75 miles north of Miami.

Following the initial 911 call, dispatch operators said multiple additional calls came in regarding citizens rendering aid to a man who had been stabbed just outside of the apartment complex.

Upon arriving, first responders located the victim, described as a 5-foot-5-inch Hispanic male between age 40 and 50, who was “bleeding and laying in the street next to his bicycle.”

Witnesses immediately began identifying Johnson as the assailant, pointing him out as he sat on the bench at a nearby bus stop smoking a cigarette. Officers approached and detained Johnson, noting that he had blood covering his hands. Police also found a two-pronged barbecue fork “with blood on both prongs” on the bench next to where Johnson had been sitting.

Multiple witnesses told police the same story, which included Johnson approaching the victim, who was riding a bicycle, and stabbing him several times before casually walking over to the bus stop and lighting a cigarette.

“Witness 3 observed [Johnson] stab the other male with an unknown object multiple times in the head and neck area,” the affidavit states. “Witness-3 even heard [Johnson] repeatedly shout: ‘DIE! DIE! DIE’ as he was continuously stabbing the unknown male. Witness-3 then advised that [Johnson] abruptly stopped attacking the victim, stood up calmly, and turned around to walk away. Witness-3 then left the area but saw police and made contact with officers on scene.”

Johnson’s mother, Deborah McLeod, told police that before he attacked the stranger, Johnson had tried to stab her with the fork.

“McLeod further explained that Johnson swung overhand to stab her, but her sweater got caught/tangled with the BBQ Fork and Johnson pulled back as if he missed,” the affidavit states. “McLeod then stated that Johnson’s attention was re-diverted to his cousin, Rhiannon Phillips. Johnson then began to chase Phillips with the BBQ Fork but Phillips was able to barricade herself in the bathroom.”

After the unsuccessful attacks, McLeod said her son “stormed out of the apartment” while “carrying the BBQ fork.”

In a post-Miranda interview with investigators, Johnson allegedly confessed to stabbing the victim, saying he attacked the man with “a fork,” per the affidavit.

“Detectives asked if Johnson knew the victim, and Johnson replied that he did not know him,” the affidavit states. “As questions continued, Johnson paused detectives and asked, ‘Is the little Guatemalan dead?’ Johnson also stated, ‘I just hit him. I just started hitting him. He was just riding on his bike, drinking his beer.””

Johnson is currently being held in the Palm Beach County Jail without bond, records show. In addition to the murder charge, Johnson is also facing one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

William McClish preparing to attack Orlando police officers in a video he streamed on Facebook Live and mug shot (Orlando Police Dept.)

A 29-year-old man in Florida who last year turned down a plea deal that would have sent him to prison for five years may now spend the remainder of his life locked up for brutally ambushing two police officers in an attack that he streamed live on Facebook.

Orange County Circuit Court Judge Keven B. Weiss on Tuesday ordered William McClish to serve a sentence of life in prison after being convicted on charges of attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer with great bodily harm, among others, authorities announced.

In a news release, prosecutors with the Orange-Osceola State Attorney’s Office said jurors took less than an hour to find McClish guilty on all charges following a two-day trial.

Acting as his own defense attorney, McClish tried to convince jurors that he had been set up, keeping his opening remarks to a single sentence.

“I didn’t do it and the evidence was tampered with,” was all he said, according to the state attorney’s office.

According to an affidavit of probable cause, the unprovoked attack took place at about 12:30 a.m. on Sept. 25, 2021.

Uniformed officers Michael Zambito and Stephen Hurt with the Orlando Police Department were standing outside their patrol vehicle at North Magnolia and East Washington Street when Zambito spotted McClish, who appeared to be setting up a cellphone to record a video of the officers.

Shortly thereafter, McClish struck Hurt in the back of the head with a brick and then started punching Hurt as he fell to the ground. Zambito intervened, lifting McCliup from behind. But McClish bit Zambito’s bicep, then “slipped his head out of Zambito’s grip and began gouging Zambito’s left eye with his fingers. When the officer managed to “stop the defendant from gouging his eye out,” McClish bit the middle finger on the officer’s left hand, the affidavit states.

As McClish and the officer continued to struggle, McClish grabbed the officer’s radio hand mic, pulling it off his shoulder to prevent him from calling for help.

Additional officers who were already en route arrived a short while later and they were able to subdue McClish and take him into custody.

Prosecutors said they later learned that McClish had positioned his phone against a trash can, trained it on the two officers and streamed the attack on Facebook Live. Just before beginning the recording, McClish filmed and posted another video in which he speaks to the camera, saying, “I’m gonna kill him on Live.” Prosecutors said that video established that McClish intended to kill the officers.

Additionally, while incarcerated, McClish “boasted about his attempt to take the officer’s firearm during the assault,” prosecutors said.

According to a report from Orlando ABC affiliate WFTV, prosecutors under then-State Attorney for the Ninth Circuit Monique Worrell offered McClish a deal in 2023 in which he would serve only five years by pleading guilty to a lesser charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer. However, McClish reportedly rejected the deal in August 2023.

When the state attorney was removed from office and replaced, new prosecutors said there was no explanation for why a deal was ever offered to McClish. Earlier this year, McClish attempted to have the deal brought back to the table but was denied.

The man seen on video attacking an Asian woman in front of a Manhattan apartment building was sentenced on Wednesday to 15 years in a New York prison to be followed by five years of supervised release, according to CBS News. The defendant, Brandon Elliot, already spent time in jail for stabbing his mother in 2002 and was released on lifetime parole in 2019.

The survivor of the 2021 attack in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood, Vilma Kari, was reportedly heading to church that day when Elliot kicked her to the ground and repeatedly stomped on her.

The defendant, who is Black, allegedly made anti-Asian statements such as “You don’t belong here.” Police arrested him after people recognized him from a local homeless shelter.

Kari, who is originally from the Philippines, sustained a fractured pelvis and contusion to the head. Now physically healed from the ordeal, she voiced grace to the defendant but never hedged her words on the severity of his actions.

“While I did not physically die that day, a portion of me did,” she said. “A portion of me that made me think I could come to America 40 years ago and be accepted for who I am. I was wrong.”

Kari said that he took her peace.

“Mr. Elliot, I will pray for you, even though you may not change,” she said.

Eliot, who pleaded guilty to assault in the first degree as a hate crime and criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, voiced an apology. Kari, who said she did not expect it, said she was touched.

Ryan Samsel (via FBI court filing).

The Pennsylvania Proud Boys member widely seen as the tip of the spear that first broke through a police barrier at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 has been convicted of felonies and misdemeanors in connection with the riot but acquitted of trespassing charges.

In a mixed verdict handed down Friday, U.S. District Judge Jia Cobb convicted Ryan Samsel and co-defendants James Grant, Paul Johnson, Steven Randolph, and Jason Blythe of civil disorder and assault on police with a dangerous weapon, both felonies, as well as an act of physical violence in the Capitol grounds or buildings, a misdemeanor, Washington, D.C., CBS affiliate WUSA reported. Samsel, Grant, and Johnson were additionally convicted of obstruction of an official proceeding, a 20-year felony, and misdemeanor disorderly conduct in a Capitol building or grounds.

Only Samsel was convicted of additional counts of civil disorder and assaulting police, both with and without a dangerous weapon.

As Law&Crime previously reported, Samsel was accused of facing off against police officers over barriers at the Peace Circle on Jan. 6. During that confrontation, Officer Caroline Edwards was thrown to the ground, hitting her head on a concrete step and suffering a concussion.

That confrontation preceded “hours and hours of hand-to-hand combat,” Edwards said in her June 9 testimony before the House Select Committee to Investigate the Jan. 6 Attack on the U.S. Capitol.

All the men were acquitted of entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds with a dangerous weapon, disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds with a dangerous weapon, and engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or grounds with a dangerous weapon.

Those acquittals reflect Cobb’s conclusion that a trespassing conviction under the circumstances requires defendants to know that a Secret Service protectee — such as then-Vice President Mike Pence — was present on Capitol grounds, Politico reported.

Samsel has been linked to another high-profile Jan. 6 defendant, Joseph R. Biggs, a member of the Proud Boys who was convicted of seditious conspiracy in the Jan. 6 Capitol attack. Biggs and Samsel allegedly spoke briefly before Samsel moved forward with the assault on Edwards and other officers; Samsel has denied that such an exchange ever occurred.

The House committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol attack has said that the assault on police at the Peace Circle was the first of multiple breaches at the Capitol that day, and was the result of reconnaissance by the Proud Boys, looking for vulnerabilities in Capitol security.

Samsel, who has been detained since his arrest in January 2021, has made multiple complaints about what he says is a lack of effective — and necessary — medical treatment. According to medical records, Samsel suffers from several health problems, including blood clots causing circulation issues in his arms, and a condition called gynecomastia, or overdevelopment of breast tissue in men.

The verdict comes more than a month after the trial, which started in late October, and concluded in December.

It was not immediately clear when sentencing would be held.

Jennifer Estella Flores sicced her pit bull, Wasabi, on her ex-boyfriend, authorities said. (Mug shot: Flagler County Jail)

A woman terrorized her ex-boyfriend, first by throwing around his clothes during an argument, then stopping him from leaving her apartment, choking him with his gold chain, demanding that he hit her so that she have bruises, and finally, siccing her pit bull “Wasabi” on him to bloody effect, according to authorities in Florida.

Jennifer Estella Flores, 34, was locked up at the Flagler County Jail on Monday.

Partially redacted affidavits viewed by Law&Crime claim that an officer was performing speed enforcement in the 4600 block of E. Moody Blvd. at approximately 12:36 a.m.

The victim — covered in blood and “deep laceration marks” on both forearms — parked his car next to the officer, stepped out, and ran for the patrol vehicle. He told the deputy his ex-girlfriend had her dog attack him in her nearby apartment.

According to documents, the man said that Flores, his ex, contacted him earlier in the day to come over. They were no longer in a relationship, having been together for eight years and “lived together as a family unit approximately 3 years ago,” but they still “mess around” in a sexual manner, state records.

This time, however, things took a turn for the violent.

“He stated that Jennifer was ‘drunk’ and kept bringing up his other relationships as she got on top of him, straddling him in the bed,” authorities wrote. “During the verbal argument, she got off him, picking up his clothes from the floor and threw them into her bathroom.”

The man went to grab his things so he could leave, but the defendant allegedly prevented him from going, and she choked him with the gold chain around his neck.

Flores allegedly backed off and took off her shirt.

“[The ex-boyfriend] stated that she told him to hit her so she could have bruises also,” deputies wrote.

Grabbing his clothes with one hand, and shoving her to the side with the other, he tried to exit, according to an affidavit.

“[The man] then stated Jennifer told her dog, a black Pitbull named ‘Wasabi’ to ‘get him,”” documents stated.

She allegedly grabbed the man, and the pit bull began attacking his arms and legs, leaving a lot of blood in the living room.

The victim said he could not feel his arm because of the dog attack. He could not write a statement because of his injuries.

Law enforcement described a contentious scenario as they arrived at Flores’ nearby apartment. First, she exited, then returned again, and did not answer as they announced themselves. There remained no answer even after a deputy tried to make contact through the sliding glass door in the back.

“Jennifer eventually came to the front door only covered in a blue blanket,” they wrote. “Jennifer was extremely argumentative and kept talking over law enforcement.”

She allegedly mentioned she was drinking.

As authorities tried to tell her why they were there, she refused to talk and tried to walk back inside, according to documents. An officer stopped her by grabbing her arm, they said.

Authorities tried to have her put her clothes on, but she kept speaking over them, documents said.

She finally denied touching her ex, and she kept interrupting the official trying to read her Miranda rights, they wrote.

Flores allegedly did not quit talking even after they turned her over to jail deputies.

Investigators claimed to find blood spatter all over the bottom of the front door. There was also blood on the living room floor and rubbing alcohol near the blood. A black pit bull was locked in a cage near the front door.

She is held on a $50,000 bond, charged with a total of three counts of false imprisonment and count each of domestic – aggravated battery and domestic – aggravated strangulation. Two of those false imprisonment counts are from her allegedly locking two people, including her son, in a bathroom amid law enforcement responding to the apartment.
