Cops in Florida have arrested a 27-year-old man for allegedly shooting a U.S. Army veteran to death after a dispute at a gas station last year.

Kendrick Jerrod Anderson is facing a second-degree murder charge for the November 2023 slaying of 60-year-old Gregory C. Reed in Ocoee, a suburb of Orlando. Ocoee police announced Friday in a press release that detectives arrested Anderson after a year-long investigation.

According to a probable cause arrest affidavit, a Publix grocery store employee called 911 around 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 9, 2023, to report an accident involving a Ford SUV where someone died. Officers and paramedics responded to the scene and found that the driver, later identified as Reed, had been shot several times. First responders rushed him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Publix surveillance video showed the SUV coming from the adjoining BP/Circle K gas station before making an abrupt right turn and crashing into a parked vehicle. A witness at the gas station said he and his girlfriend were sitting in front of the gas station when he saw the SUV and a Mercedes enter the parking lot about the same time. The driver of the Mercedes was trying to pull into a pump, but nearly collided with Reed’s SUV. In response, Reed honked his horn, the witness reportedly told cops. According to the witness, Reed and the two people in the Mercedes were shouting “what, what” back and forth, allegedly sizing each other up.

After the Mercedes parked at the pump, Reed went to the exit to leave the gas station. That’s when the passenger of the Mercedes got out of the car, walked up to Reed’s SUV and allegedly fired five shots, striking Reed multiple times. The Mercedes then drove away.

Reed was wearing a Domino’s Pizza T-shirt at the time of his death and his boss told detectives he had just gotten off his shift as a delivery driver prior to the murder.

Lawyer awarded $3.3M after crashing snowmobile into negligently parked Army helicopter

A federal judge in Massachusetts has awarded $3.3 million in damages to a lawyer for injuries suffered when he crashed his snowmobile into a camouflaged U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter parked on a snowmobile trail at dusk.

U.S. District Judge Mark G. Mastroianni of the District of Massachusetts awarded damages to Massachusetts lawyer Jeffrey Smith in a Sept. 23 decision following a bench trial.

Mastroianni found that the government was 60% responsible for the 2019 incident because it failed “to take any steps to protect against the obvious risk” that it created from parking the helicopter in the spot. Smith was 40% responsible for speeding and wearing tinted goggles at night, the judge said.

Mastroianni came up with the $3.3 million figure after reducing damages to account for Smith’s comparative negligence and to account for a settlement reached with the landowner. The judge also awarded $100,000 to Smith’s son and $150,000 to his minor daughter.

Smith “suffered life-changing injuries” from the crash in Worthington, Massachusetts, Mastroianni said. He had multiple broken bones, a puncture to his left lung, herniated discs and neurological damage. A neurosurgeon had testified that Smith’s nerves had been “pulled clean out of the spinal cord itself,” making breathing difficult and essentially robbing him of the use of his left arm.

Smith’s law practice suffered because of limited stamina and pain. His net earnings were $134,394 in 2018, before the incident. In 2022, after the incident, he had a net loss of $5,671 because of increased paralegal hours.

The helicopter crew had flown from New York to Worthington for night training before deployment to Afghanistan. The chief warrant officer chose the location to replicate what the crew would see in Afghanistan. He also chose the location so that he could meet and socialize with a friend who lived in the town.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Bureau of Land Management proposes to extend a 25-year public land withdrawal for continued military use and training at Fort Irwin National Training Center in San Bernardino County. Federal Register publication of Notice of the Army’s withdrawal extension application initiates a public comment period that will end on Oct. 24.

Fort Irwin National Training Center supports a key area for conducting arms military training, development, and testing of military equipment. The order affects approximately 117,700 acres of public land, which would remain closed to settlement, sale, location, and entry under the general land laws, including the mining laws.

The Louisiana Army veteran who was convicted of killing an unarmed Iraqi man must be kept behind bars ahead of his trial for assaulting police officers at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, federal prosecutors have said in an emergency filing.

Prosecutors say Edward Richmond Jr. should have been taken into custody after his arrest on Monday and are asking a federal magistrate in Washington, D.C., to override a local magistrate’s order denying pretrial detention.

In an emergency motion filed Wednesday, government lawyers say that Richmond is both a flight risk and a danger to those around him.

“Richmond has a previous manslaughter conviction for shooting a handcuffed man in the head; on January 6, he brought a metal baton to the Capitol and used to commit brutal assaults on officers,” the filing says. “When the FBI arrested him — an arrest that was complicated by Richmond’s efforts to live an untraceable life ‘off the grid’ — they discovered an assault rifle in his closet. Richmond poses both a danger and a risk of nonappearance, and the Court should detain him pending trial.”
