Background: News footage of Terence Trent Vos being cross examined in court (KUTV). Inset: Shandon Scott (Myers Mortuary).

A Utah man who admitted during a jailhouse phone call that he made up a story about his girlfriend’s killer was found guilty of her murder.

In a press release on March 21, Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill announced that Terence Trent Vos, 35, was convicted of the May 2021 murder of his girlfriend, Shandon Scott, 32. Gill wrote that the trial lasted six days, including a cross examination of Vos by the prosecution that was captured by KUTV, a local CBS affiliate. Vos was asked by prosecutors about a phone call he had with a friend while he was incarcerated during which he admitted that he and Scott had a fight that night and he shot her.

Gill stated in the release that on the night of May 1, 2021, Unified Police responded to calls about a car crash in Salt Lake County. When they arrived, witnesses told police that they saw Vos in the driver’s seat and Scott in the passenger’s seat, “deceased from many gunshot wounds.” Vos then allegedly tried to steal a witness’s vehicle, but was unsuccessful. As officers arrived at the scene, Gill wrote, Vos fled on foot.

Officers caught up with Vos quickly and took him into custody. During his interview with detectives, Vos said that it was two other men who had shot Scott, a story he was reminded of while on the stand. He was also reminded during cross examination (at around the 19:57 mark of KUTV’s coverage) that he later spoke to a friend on the phone while he was in custody and told her, that Scott was “stabbing” him, and that he “shot her.” Vos confirmed on the stand, “I did say that.”

The prosecutor read from a transcript, quoting Vos, who said, “It was like we started fighting, I don’t even remember what it was about. But then she started stabbing me, and I just… I shot her.” Again, Vos confirmed, “I did say that.” He also admitted on the stand, “I did not have any stab wounds.”

When read back what he said to his mother on the phone while in custody, the prosecutor said that he told his mother, “I had made some whole other s— up.” Vos denied that, and the prosecutor ended her questioning.

KSL, an affiliate of NBC, reported that an autopsy on Scott’s body revealed that she had been shot 12 times before the car crash.

Vos was convicted of one count of first-degree felony aggravated murder, three counts of first-degree felony discharge of a firearm with serious bodily injury, one count of first-degree felony possession of a firearm by a restricted person, one count of second-degree felony obstructing justice, and one count of class A misdemeanor failure to stop at command of law officer. He is scheduled to be sentenced on May 23.

The co-defendant of a former MLB player has admitted to her role in the deadly shooting of the baseball player’s in-laws in their California home.

Samantha Maria Scott, 34, pleaded guilty on Feb. 6 to a charge of being an accessory to a felony in the shootings of Robert Gary Spohr, 70, and Wendy Louise Wood, 68. Scott’s co-defendant, former MLB pitcher Daniel “Danny” Joseph Serafini, 51, is set for a jury trial in the case in March.

Robert Spohr was the father of Erin Spohr, Serafini’s wife. Scott was reportedly a friend of Erin Spohr’s and the family’s former nanny.

Spohr was fatally shot on June 5, 2021, at his Lake Tahoe-area residence. Deputies found him dead from a single gunshot wound. His wife had also been shot but was taken to a hospital, where she recovered from her injuries. She died by suicide a year later.

After the initial shooting incident, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office shared two videos of a “hooded male wearing a face-covering and a backpack walking to the residence several hours before the homicide occurred,” Law&Crime reported. One of the videos showed a man with a backpack outside the Spohrs’ residence, and the second added footage of the suspect walking on a sidewalk by water.

“The information and evidence detectives gathered led them to identify Serafini and Scott as the suspects; both suspects are known to each other and to the victims,” authorities said.

Serafini and Scott, described as a close friend of Serafini’s wife, were eventually arrested.

Serafini made a name for himself as an MLB pitcher, but after his professional career ended, his apparent financial woes began. The former bar owner appeared with his wife on the show Bar Rescue. One episode, “Take Me Out to the Bar Game,” which aired in 2015, began with the story of how Serafini’s $14 million earnings from his playing career dwindled after a series of failed investments and a “bitter divorce,” a situation only made worse by the nosedive in the success of what was then known as The Bullpen at Aspen Glen, located in Sparks, Nevada.

On the episode, Erin Spohr is heard commenting about how she noticed a change in Serafini’s personality and missed her old husband, as the failing bar left him $300,000 in debt and in danger of losing his parents’ home.

“My parents were so proud of me at one time for being a successful baseball player and now I’m thinking what a disappointment I am to everybody,” Danny Serafini is also heard saying on the episode, his voice quivering.

After the bar’s makeover, the establishment was renamed Oak Tavern, but it has since closed. A 2016 tweet from the Oak Tavern’s account on X claimed the show “screwed the pooch big time lol.”

Adrienne Spohr, Erin Spohr’s sister and the daughter of Robert Spohr and Wendy Wood, filed a wrongful-death lawsuit in June 2023 against the defendants and her sister. In the lawsuit, Adrienne Spohr accused them of “malicious, despicable, cruel, and unjust conduct” making them liable for damages after the “senseless murder” of Robert Gary Spohr and the eventual death of Wood.

“My parents had been incredibly generous to Daniel Serafini and Erin Spohr throughout their marriage,” she said. “Despite being pressed for my opinion, I cannot comment on my sister’s level of involvement at this time.”

In a countersuit, Erin Spohr, who has not been charged in the murders, alleges her sister manipulated their mother to cut her out of the inheritance.

Scott’s sentencing date has not been set.

A New York man faces up to life in prison after stabbing his wife to death — and injuring his son as he tried to protect her.

Ryszard Murawski, 44, pleaded guilty Tuesday to second-degree murder in the death Wioleta Murawski, 38, in her backyard on Long Island in January. According to a statement from the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, Ryszard Murawski attacked his wife on Jan. 3, 2024, at around 8:30 p.m.

Suffolk County police received a 911 call from the couple’s 15-year-old son stating that his father had stabbed his mother and then fled in a black GMC pickup truck, the prosecutor’s statement said.

“The teen, distraught during the duration of the call, begged the police for help as he desperately tried to save his mother’s life,” the DA’s office said. He told police that he heard his mother screaming for help in the backyard as he returned home from a friend’s house. He said he ran to the backyard to discover his father stabbing his mother with a “large, serrated knife.”

The Murawski’s son tried to stop the brutality himself.

“The boy jumped on his father and struggled with him until his mother was able to break free,” the DA’s statement said. “Wioleta Murawski was able to stumble across the street before collapsing with her son by her side.”

She was taken to a hospital but ultimately did not survive the attack.

More from Law&Crime: ‘Guess I lost my head’: Octogenarian allegedly kills wife of over 65 years with ‘large kitchen knife’ during ‘big fight’

The “brutal attack” was apparently captured on the Murawski family’s home surveillance system, the prosecutor said.

After fleeing the house, Murawski continued to run even as police gave chase.

“Multiple police units pursued Murawski for more than seven miles with lights and sirens before the defendant lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the side of a building,” the statement said.

Murawski faces 22 years to life in prison. He is expected to return to court on Oct. 17.

“This is a tragic case of domestic violence that ended with the senseless death of Wioleta Murawski and horrific trauma to their child,” District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney said in the statement. “This defendant will now have to pay for his actions in prison.”

“Domestic violence is never the answer,” Tierney added, urging victims of domestic abuse to reach out to police for help.

A face-painting St. Louis Cardinals superfan once accused on ex-Fox News pundit Tucker Carlson’s show of being a Jan. 6 plant admitted to clashing with a phalanx of officers guarding the U.S. Capitol during the riots.

Rally Runner, formerly known as Daniel Donnelly, Jr., 43, pleaded guilty to a felony offense of civil disorder. He faces up to 30 months in prison and fines of up to $40,000 when he is set to be sentenced on July 30.

Runner’s attorney, Scott Rosenblum, said his client “wanted to accept responsibility and move on with the next chapter of his life,” NBC News reported.

Runner traveled to Washington to participate in Donald Trump’s “Stop the Steal” rally that day.

Wearing a red “Keep America Great” hat, red jacket, and distinctive red face paint, Runner went to the Capitol building and to the Lower West Terrace Tunnel, the site of some of the most violent attacks against law enforcement that day, court documents said.

Holding a police riot shield he had found earlier, Runner faced off with officers trying to move rioters out of the tunnel. At one point, Runner held up the shield, forming a wall with other shields held by other rioters.

Using his shield to push officers back, Runner led the rioters forward for several minutes. They pressed against officers, gaining ground and forcing the phalanx of police into the Capitol building. Ten minutes passed when a second group of officers joined their colleagues to push the rioters out of the tunnel.

After being forced out of the Tunnel, Runner celebrated his effort in a video on his Facebook page.

“I get a riot shield, and I’m not trying to cause any violence, but I’m trying to be the furthest person to get through all the way, or at least get the furthest,” Runner said in the video. “I took up a lot of space, and I had the rioter shield, and I was right up there, and for some reason, like, the other people up there on the front lines with me, they did something similar … It’s like they followed my lead, kind of.”

He was arrested last August in St. Louis.

On Carlson’s show, a guest claimed Runner was “clearly a law enforcement officer” and an “agent provocateur” trying to smear the former president’s supporters.

Runner used to jog around Busch Stadium during home games to help “strengthen the spirit for the Cardinals,” the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

Ivanka Trump, Donald Trump, Allen Weisselberg, Donald Trump, Jr. (Timothy A. Clary/AFP/Getty Images)

The former longtime CFO of the Trump Organization, himself already convicted of a slew of financial crimes, has now admitted to perjuring himself as New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) undertook a massive civil fraud probe into former President Donald Trump’s business empire.

Allen Weisselberg appeared in New York Supreme Court to plead guilty to two felonies on Monday morning before Judge Laurie Peterson. Thereafter, the judge set sentencing for April 10.

In New York, first-degree perjury is committed when someone “swears falsely and when his false statement (a) consists of testimony, and (b) is material to the action, proceeding or matter in which it is made.” A class D nonviolent felony, first-degree perjury is punishable by up to 7 years in prison. But between Weisselberg’s decision to plead guilty, his age — 76 — and the reported five-month sentence recommended by prosecutors, the defendant does not appear to face a stiff punishment, as was the case when he was sentenced the first time around and released from Rikers Island early for good behavior.

The court docket reviewed by Law&Crime in the criminal case against Weisselberg lists the date of the two first-degree perjury offenses as July, 16, 2020, which is the first day of Weisselberg’s two-day initial sworn testimony in AG James’ investigation pursuant to a subpoena.

According to prosecutors’ criminal information in the case, however, the lies to which Weisselberg pleaded guilty were told on July 17, 2020, when the AG pressed him on whether he was “ever present” when Trump described the size of his Trump Tower triplex.

“No,” Weisselberg responded to that question.

Prosecutors in Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg’s (D) office said that, on the contrary, Weisselberg was “present” on Sept. 21, 2015 when Trump “stated to a Forbes reporter that the size of his triplex was 33,000 square feet,” overestimating the square footage by a factor of three.

Recall that, well before the civil fraud case led to a $364 million dollar penalty and then some, Trump attorneys in the former president’s civil fraud case incited the ire of Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron when they argued that calculating square footage was a “subjective process.”

“In opposition, defendants absurdly suggest that ‘the calculation of square footage is a subjective process that could lead to differing results or opinions based on the method employed to conduct the calculation,”” Engoron wrote, before adding: “A discrepancy of this order of magnitude, by a real estate developer sizing up his own living space of decades, can only be considered fraud.”

Weisselberg was also asked if he “advised any financial institutions” that a 2015 statement of financial condition contained the triplex calculation “error.”

“Well, we didn’t find out about the error until the Forbes article came out,” he answered.

Prosecutors said that, again, that was not true.

“Whereas, in truth and in fact, as the defendant knew, that testimony was false, and the truth was that the defendant was informed that the triplex was 10,996 square feet—not 30,000 square feet—prior to the publication of the May 2017 Forbes article and before the finalization on March 10, 2017 of the 2016 SOFC, which valued the triplex based on the misstatement of 30,000 square feet,” prosecutors said.

Weisselberg’s defense attorney Seth Rosenberg, reached for comment by Law&Crime, said his client “looks forward to putting this situation behind him.”

Read Weisselberg’s criminal information here (h/t Adam Klasfeld).

The man known as the Kansas City Chiefs superfan “ChiefsAholic” admitted to leading a double life as a prolific ski-mask-wearing bank robber who won a $100,000 Super Bowl bet while he was a fugitive.

Xaviar Michael Babudar, 29, pleaded guilty to charges of bank robbery, money laundering and transporting stolen property across state lines. Babudar admitted he committed, or tried to commit, 11 robberies at banks and credit unions, two of them while on the run. He was ordered to pay at least $532,675 in restitution and forfeit property, including an autographed painting of Mahomes that the FBI recovered.

“His violent crime spree across the Midwest and beyond traumatized bank employees and victimized financial institutions in seven states,” said U.S. Attorney Teresa Moore in a news release. “The defendant tried to conceal hundreds of thousands of dollars in stolen cash by using it to gamble online and at casinos, but the odds caught up with him. With today’s conviction, he will be held accountable for the full scope of his criminal conduct, including his attempt to flee from justice.”

The first heist he admitted to was when he stole $70,000 from a Great Western Bank in Clive, Iowa, on March 2, 2022. He handed the teller a note demanding money and indicating he had a gun.

On April 28, 2022, he stole $170,860 from the First National Bank of Omaha in Nebraska. Police recovered $163,560 from that case.

At the First Class Community Credit Union in Des Moines, Iowa, on July 13, 2022, he jumped over the counter armed with a silver and black gun and demanded employees open the vault. He got $303,845 that day.

He took the money to Missouri, laundered it through area casinos, and deposited it into his bank account, prosecutors said.

At the Tennessee Credit Union in Nashville on Nov. 17, 2022, he hopped the counter, pressed his gun against a teller’s body and demanded to be taken to the vault. Employees complied with his demands. He told the employees if he was given a dye pack, he would “come back and put a bullet in your head,” prosecutors said.

While fleeing, he left behind a hat that authorities recovered and found DNA that matched DNA from a glove he left behind in an earlier robbery. A few days after the heist in Nashville, Babudar bought $20,000 in chips from a local casino with some of the cash.

Babudar tried to rob the Wings Financial Credit Union in Savage, Minnesota, on Nov. 29, 2022, but decided not to, as the vault only held small bills. The same day, he tried again at the Royal Credit Union in Apple Valley, Minnesota, but they, too, carried small bills. But he made up for it the next day when he got $25,000 from First Interstate Bank in Clive, Iowa. He went back to the place he first robbed in March, but then his luck started to run out.

He entered the vestibule at the Pinnacle Bank in Papillon, Nebraska, on Dec. 15, 2022, but couldn’t open the doors.

He was arrested the following day when he robbed the Tulsa Teachers Federal Credit Union.

When authorities found him, he had a large bag with $139,500 in $100 increments and $10,750 in $50 increments for $150,250. A search of his 2019 Mazda 3 turned up goggles and gloves. Investigators also found sports betslips, totaling $24,000 and credit union deposit letters for $20,000 and $50,000, authorities said.

During his spree, he won two big bets at the Argosy Casino in Illinois — that Mahomes would win Most Valuable Player at Super Bowl LVII and that the Chiefs would win the Super Bowl. After the Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 on Feb. 13, 2023, and Mahomes won MVP, the casino mailed Babudar a $100,000 check in March.

Days after receiving that check, Babudar, who had been released from custody on bond after his arrest in Oklahoma, cut his ankle monitor, fled that state and used his gambling winnings to purchase a vehicle in Henderson, Nevada.

While on the run, he robbed two more banks, one in Sparks, Nevada, and another in El Dorado Hills, California, before he was rearrested in Sacramento on July 7.

He faces up to 50 years in federal prison without parole. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for July 10.

A former Ohio Army National Guardsman who went AWOL after Joe Biden won the election admitted to assaulting officers during the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, court documents said.

Matthew Honigford, 31, pleaded guilty to a felony offense of assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers. He is set to be sentenced on Aug. 19 by U.S. District Judge Tanya S. Chutkan, a Barack Obama appointee.

He was among thousands attending Donald Trump’s “Stop the Steal” rally that day before entering Capitol grounds, and his actions were caught on camera, officials said.

At 2:30 p.m., while Honigford was positioned at the front of a crowd of rioters that breached a police line of officers on the southwest plaza, he pushed a flagpole into an officer’s chest area, then struggled with the officer for the pole for about 20 seconds before advancing with the crowd to the upper west terrace, authorities said.

Later, he repeatedly touched or tried to touch officers with his hands, saying he was praying for them, authorities claim. When he didn’t stop reaching his hands toward officers, rioters told him to stop.

“I’m trying to f–––––– pray, guys,” he told them, according to court documents.

At another point, Honigford allegedly kicked a metal bike rack barrier toward an officer as rioters broke through a police line.

Honigford is a former specialist with the Ohio Army National Guard who was honorably discharged after he completed his enlistment commitment in March 2022, court documents said.

Authorities said a staff sergeant with the Ohio Army National Guard identified Honigford and said he had been a specialist in the Aviation Battalion that the staff sergeant had overseen beginning in 2019.

That witness told agents that shortly after the presidential election in November 2020, Honigford stopped attending drill weekends, saying his sister was sick and he needed to be available to help her.

The witness also said Honigford told him he did not trust the current state of the country following the election of Joe Biden as president. Honigford was reported Absent Without Leave but permitted to remain in the Ohio Army National Guard until his service ended on March 14, 2022.

Honigford’s public defender did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Law&Crime.

In the 37 months since Jan. 6, 2021, more than 1,313 people have been charged in nearly all 50 states for crimes related to the Capitol breach, including more than 469 charged with assaulting or impeding law enforcement, authorities said.
