A Florida woman received quite the surprise Friday afternoon when she saw a dog wandering in her front yard and found an unaccompanied little girl sitting on a chair in her carport. Now the child’s mother, 27-year-old Aquania Aleshia Estes, and her 29-year-old boyfriend Pitrez Floyd are behind bars.

The neighbor called the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office around 4:30 p.m. Friday after discovering the child and dog outside her Deltona home, a press release said.

Per deputies, the girl told the neighbor she was “hot, thirsty and hungry.” She brought the girl food, water, toys and clean clothes as deputies tried to find her parents. Cops posted body camera footage of deputies’ interaction with the girl.

“You don’t know if you live nearby here?,” a deputy asked.

The girl said she wasn’t sure.

“You don’t? You don’t know mommy and daddy’s name?,” the deputy responded.

She gave cops the name “Quana.”

“Why did mommy and daddy drop you off by yourself,” the deputy queried.

The girl said: “They had to go somewhere.”

She didn’t know when they’d be coming back.

More from Law&Crime: ‘Not a viable explanation’: Couple searched ‘dent’ injuries hours before taking infant to hospital with bleeding brain, police say

“Mommy and daddy needed to go charge their cell phones,” the child told deputies according to an arrest affidavit obtained by local Fox affiliate WOFL.

She also said she did not attend school.

Medical personnel responded to the scene to take the girl’s vital signs and they came back OK, per deputies.

Cops tracked down Estes and Floyd some nine hours later, the press release said. Body camera footage showed deputies were incredulous at the situation.

“You leave your kid on the side of the f—in’ road?” a deputy asked.

Estes explained that they were homeless and “live in the forest,” the video showed.

“She got out from where she was staying at,” the mother reassoned. “I was trying to go get water and food. We have been going through a rough time.”

Deputies discovered the area where the family had been living which consisted of two tents in the woods.

Estes and Floyd were arrested on charges of desertion of a child and abandonment of an animal. Both remained behind bars as of Sunday morning on a $51,000 bond. The girl was placed into custody of her grandparents.

A mother from Michigan has learned her fate for abandoning her 1-year-old son on Florida‘s Daytona Beach. The boy’s teenage brother reportedly called the cops on her on the day in question — claiming she was “possessed by demons.”

Shamika Mitchell, 38, was sentenced Thursday to 15 years in prison for her son’s abandonment. She was found guilty in November 2024 of aggravated child abuse and unlawful desertion of a child.

Florida’s Seventh Judicial Circuit Judge Karen Foxman said Mitchell had been using marijuana, drinking alcohol and possibly using meth while caring for the child, who was in the surf and could have drowned if he had not been rescued, the Daytona Beach News-Journal reported.

The newspaper reported her public defender saying the defendant struggled through a difficult childhood and had a psychotic episode at the time of the incident.

The case came to light on Nov. 8, 2023. Mitchell was seen on surveillance video walking onto Daytona Beach with her 1-year-old son just before midnight. She returned alone five minutes later.

Her teen son called 911, Law&Crime previously reported.

“She sent my little brother somewhere,” the teen told authorities, according to local NBC affiliate WESH. “She said with his dad. I keep telling her to show me proof, proof, but she’s not showing me proof. … So, like, I really think my mom is possessed by demons.”

“I’m telling her to tell me proof because I know that he’s been having these little episodes lately,” the teen added to the dispatcher.

It is unclear what caused the “episodes,” according to WESH.

A stranger wound up finding Mitchell’s son, and just in the nick of time, police said.

“She told Daytona Beach Police that he was in the water on his hands and knees,” police said in the incident report. “Hands buried in the sand up to his wrists and waves were crashing over his head.”

Authorities reported that the boy was unresponsive and had shallow breathing when found by first responders, in addition to an elevated pulse. He was rushed to Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and later made a full recovery.

WJBK reported in December 2023 that Mitchell’s five children — then ages 1 to 17 — were placed in the foster care system by Florida’s Department of Children and Families after her arrest. Their grandmother, Valerie Mitchell, told the outlet she traveled to the Sunshine State to try and get them out, but was unable to at first.

“I’ve called everybody and I need some help,” Valerie Mitchell said. “My grandsons want to come home.”

On Dec. 19, 2023, the children were sent home with a case manager and placed in Valerie Mitchell’s custody. She said it was a Christmas that she’ll never forget.

“I am so happy, I just don’t know what to do,” Valerie Mitchell told the Detroit Free Press after her grandchildren arrived. “I’m just happy they’re home.”

Inset: Kaitlyn Maire Estes (Newton County Sheriff). Background: The home where Estes allegedly abandoned her infant child (KSNW).

A 23-year-old mother in Missouri is facing felony criminal charges after she allegedly left her 4-month-old daughter home alone for an unknown period of time so she could “go score.” Kaitlyn Maire Estes was taken into custody earlier this month and charged with one count of first-degree abandonment of a child and one count of first-degree endangering the welfare of a child, court records reviewed by Law&Crime show.

According to a probable cause affidavit, an investigator with the Missouri Department of Social Services Children’s Division at about 11:45 a.m. on Oct. 2, 2024, traveled to Estes’ home in the 3200 block of S Grand Avenue to follow up on an existing investigation.

Upon arriving at the home, the investigator repeatedly knocked on the door and said she could hear a baby crying inside. The investigator, who knew that Estes had an infant child, continued knocking for about 45 minutes before giving up and calling law enforcement.

Police responded to the home and determined that Estes’ vehicle was not on the property.

Because the front door was deadbolted from the inside, police asked the property manager to let them into the home so they could ensure the well-being of the crying baby.

“Upon entry, officers located a four-month-old female in the bedroom. The baby was wedged between the adult sized bed mattress and the wall,” police wrote in the affidavit. “A blanket had been pulled across the face of the baby. Officers removed the baby from the bed. In doing so, they noted her diaper was extremely soiled and sagging. The baby was crying and appeared to be in distress. Bruising on the face area was also observed. No other person was located in the residence.”

In addition to discovering the infant, police said they also found a handwritten note that had been “stuck to the wall of the bedroom,” which read: “Went to go score be right back.”

Authorities were unable to locate Estes, so the child was placed in the custody of the Children’s Center where she underwent a CARE exam. Doctors who performed the exam said they observed bruising on the child’s cheeks and the left side of her face as well as dermatitis and skin breakdown from the soiled diaper she had been wearing.

Estes was located three days later and placed under arrest. She was arraigned and a judge set her bond at $5,000. She remained in custody at the Newton County Jail as of Tuesday morning, records show. She is scheduled to appear in court for a bond reduction hearing on Tuesday afternoon.
