Jurors in North Carolina have convicted a man for murdering his mother and injuring his father in a beating he claimed was fueled by drugs and sleep deprivation.

Christopher McCullough was found guilty of first-degree murder Friday in the 2023 death of his 75-year-old mother Mary McCullough. Local ABC affiliate WTVD reported that McCullough was not convicted of other charges, included the attempted murder of his father and larceny of a dog.

He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The jury had deliberated for around seven hours after receiving the case on Thursday.

More from Law&Crime: ‘I wish you well in hell’: Daughter rejoices at sentencing of nurse mom who tortured her younger sister to death

The defendant’s father, John McCullough, testified against his son. According to a courtroom report from local CBS affiliate WNCN, the father told jurors ever since his son was seven, he was “uncontrollably violent” and had “superhuman-like strength.” They tried everything to treat his issues from sending to boarding school to stays at mental health hospitals. None of it worked. Eventually, he and his wife and obtained a domestic violence injunction against him and forbade him from entering their home.

But he ignored that order and entered the home on Aug. 8, 2023. He reportedly told jurors he was high on Adderall and other drugs and hadn’t slept in six days. He said he asked his parents for gas money. When they refused, he began beating his father — all in the presence of his 4-year-old son — though he did not admit to hurting his sickly mother, who used an oxygen tank and weighed just 100 pounds.

“Me and my dad got in a fight, I struck him twice to the ground, I noticed that my mother was face down,” he said, according to local NBC affiliate WRAL.

The younger McCullough then took his son and fled. Cops rushed to the home to aid the elder McCulloughs. There was blood everywhere and both victims were unconscious, cops testified.

“I noticed she had bruises and cuts on her arms,” Raleigh police Officer Phillip Merle said, per WNCN. “Because of the way she was laying, I noticed she had a large puddle of blood underneath her neck. My training officer asked who did this to her. And she was able to grunt out, ‘My son’.”

She was rushed to the hospital where she died nearly a week later.

Christopher McCullough’s son, now 6, was not physically injured in the incident but has experienced post-traumatic stress disorder from witnessing the incident.

“[The boy] has disclosed witnessing the defendant hurting nanny and poppy,” his therapist Tara Pawlyk reportedly testified. “That poppy was on the ground while the defendant covered his mouth, limiting his ability to breathe. He has also disclosed nanny was laying on the stairs, [which] the defendant had bashed her head against repeatedly.”

Defense Ricky Elmore said his client did not mean to kill his mother and just wanted gas money.

“John came at him the wrong way,” Elmore reportedly said during closing arguments. “His flight-or-fight clicked in and he started assaulting John.”

But no matter his state of mind, prosecutors argued, there was no excuse to kill a woman whom he supposedly loved.

“If that is a momma’s boy that left his mom for dead that way, God help that mom,” prosecutor Melanie Shekita told the jury during her closing arguments.

Dr. Connor Bowman (Rochester Police Department)

Police in Minnesota conducted unconstitutional searches in the case of a Mayo Clinic doctor accused of poisoning his wife and the evidence collected in those searches will be tossed, a judge ruled this week.

Dr. Connor Bowman is charged with first-degree murder and accused of using gout medicine to kill his wife Betty Jo Bowman in August 2023 at their home in the Twin Cities area. Cops with the Rochester Police Department submitted numerous applications for search warrants that Connor Bowman’s attorney’s have argued were unconstitutional. Investigators collected 14 electronic devices plus an iPad in the weeks after Betty Bowman’s death.

More from Law&Crime: ‘Upset about being told she had to move out’: Daughter ‘went shopping’ after murdering father and attacking mother for evicting her

District Judge Kathy M. Wallace took issue with two search warrants and tossed the following information collected from 13 of the devices and iPad for violating the defendant’s right to privacy:

Media including texts, emails, photographs, notes, and/or audio files and
videos, including media regarding toxic/hazardous/controlled substances,
financial matters, divorce and/or personal relationship information.

Text messages/communication including conversations about toxic/
hazardous/controlled substances, financial matters, divorce and/or personal
relationship information.

Web/Internet browsing history including searches/websites/articles etc.
about toxic/hazardous/controlled substances, financial matters, divorce
and/or personal relationship information

Wallace wrote cops failed to meet the particularity requirement, which “prevents law enforcement from having unbridled discretion in determining what items should be searched or seized and from engaging in general searches and exploratory rummaging.”

In other words, Wallace believes the language in the warrants was too broad. At the time of the first application, cops knew of the Bowmans’ marriage trouble, his financial troubles and the fact that the victim ingested a smoothie with the gout medicine that allegedly led to her death.

“This knowledge demonstrates that law enforcement could have provided more specificity in the … search warrant by searching exclusively for data concerning toxic/hazardous/controlled substances, financial matters, divorce and/or personal relationship information,” Wallace wrote.

The judge also noted investigators applied for the second warrant at issue about a month after the first. By then, they knew a lot more and could have been more specific, she said. Despite this, the application was worded almost exactly the same as the first, she said.

It’s unclear how the tossed evidence will impact the state’s case against the doctor. Prosecutors have not commented on the matter.

As Law&Crime previously reported, Dr. Connor Bowman was charged in the summer of 2023 with second-degree murder in the death of Betty Jo Bowman, but a grand jury indicted him for first-degree murder in January 2024. His wife died at a hospital on Aug. 20, 2023, following a four-day stay for what doctors initially thought was food poisoning. Her condition “deteriorated rapidly” from the time of her admission and she began to experience cardiac issues, fluid in her lungs, and organ failure. She was considered a healthy person before her hospital admission, making her death suspicious, investigators said.

Cops grew even more leery of the doctor after friends said Betty Bowman was seeking a divorce and he was in hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt. Friends also noted that as a pharmacy resident who also worked in poison control, he would have the knowledge to poison his wife if he wanted. The Southeast Minnesota Medical Examiner determined her cause of death to be toxic effects of colchicine and the manner of death to be homicide.

Investigators claim that Connor Bowman used his Mayo Clinic email address to buy the the drug colchicine — the drug used to treat gout — that they believe he used to poison his wife. He tried to blame her for buying the drug that killed her, saying she “fraudulently” bought the drug under his name, authorities said.

Detectives recently obtained information from a warrant on his phone which showed he was on the dating app Bumble by Aug. 29, just nine after his wife’s death. He identified himself as a widower and allegedly began chatting with a woman. The woman allegedly told cops she thought it was strange that he brought up the fact that he obtained a nearly $500,000 payout from his wife’s death.

Connor Bowman talked to another woman who asked if it was OK to be flirting with someone and he said it was fine and that his deceased wife would want him to move on and be happy, according to the warrant. He said his wife had died of “listeria poisoning,” a foodborne bacterial illness, “earlier in the summer,” the warrant said. The doctor allegedly told another woman his wife died of a morphine overdose about a year prior.

Cops also obtained his Google searches from his phone, which allegedly included looking for “is widow gender neutral” on Aug. 18, two days before his wife’s death.

More from Law&Crime: Woman spikes family member’s lemonade, tea with rat poison and antifreeze, then sings about Jesus on the way to jail: Cops

The doctor allegedly suggested to others and in his wife’s obituary that she suffered from hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, or “HLH,” which is a rare illness where certain blood cells build up and damage organs. But investigators learned she had no previous symptoms of HLH.

The day after she died, the medical examiner’s office alerted the Rochester Police Department about a suspicious death. The office had prevented a cremation from taking place due to the unusual circumstances, according to documents.

Connor Bowman had asked the medical examiner’s office that his wife should be “cremated immediately” because her death was natural, authorities said. But according to the medical examiner, they received a call from a woman who knew the Bowmans who said the couple was having marital issues and “talking about a divorce following infidelity and a deteriorating relationship,” a probable cause arrest affidavit said.

Defendant Bowman emailed death investigators at the medical examiner’s office asking if toxicology reports that were being completed were more “thorough” than what would typically be done at a hospital, the affidavit said. He also asked for a list of what would be tested.

Connor Bowman had attended pharmacy school and worked in poison control in Kansas and was currently in medical school. A spokesperson from the Mayo Clinic said in a statement to Law&Crime that his residency at the hospital had just finished in October.

“We are aware of the recent arrest of a former Mayo Clinic resident on charges unrelated to his Mayo Clinic responsibilities,” the statement said. The hospital would not comment further.

Betty Bowman had recently told others that her husband was in debt so they kept separate bank accounts. Connor Bowman told a friend he was going to receive a $500,000 life insurance policy as a result of his wife’s death. Investigators found a check for nearly $500,000 from an insurance company in the Bowman home.

In Rochester Police Department applications for search warrants previously reviewed by Law&Crime, friends of the couple depict a marriage on the rocks because of financial troubles and infidelity. Though the Bowmans were in an “open relationship,” the couple agreed they would not become emotionally attached to their other partners. However, Connor Bowman became infatuated with his new girlfriend, friends told detectives. Betty Bowman allegedly confronted her husband about the woman and suggested they start divorce proceedings. One friend said she went to see Connor Bowman at his home three days after the death to find the girlfriend there with him and his wife’s photos taken down, the warrant said.

Another pal said she was visiting with Betty Bowman 10 days before her death when she gave her a smoothie her husband had made for her in a Lilo & Stich cup. It “tasted very bad,” and the friend thought it was strange Connor Bowman had made a smoothie for his wife because he “never made anything for anybody,” according to the warrant.

“[The friend] said jokingly at the time that Connor must be trying to poison her, but didn’t think much of it at the time. Betty even joked that she had considered it at the time and said she didn’t think that would happen but decided to not drink the smoothie anyway and threw it out,” the warrant said. The friend became suspicious when Betty Bowman suddenly became ill and died.

The doctor also was not acting like a grieving husband typically would in the days following his wife’s death, the friends said. He seemed “stoic and calm,” even going out for drinks where he “appeared to be happy or at least indifferent” about his wife’s death two days after the fact.

One of Betty Bowman’s boyfriends told detectives that Betty Bowman, on Aug. 14, told him she “had a few days off work and was looking to spend some time with him.” The two saw each other the next day and texted later that night while she was drinking with her husband at home.

On Aug. 16, she told him she was so sick she could not sleep at all. She said she thought it may have been an alcoholic drink that she had that caused her illness because it was mixed in a large smoothie. She went to the hospital a short time later.

The scene inside a Colorado courtroom looked a grim picture of human action on Friday as a young and condemned man testified to his onetime best friend’s alleged glee in violence.

Joseph Edwin Koenig, 20, was a high school senior, but 18 years old, when he and two friends were charged with “extreme indifference” murder over the April 19, 2023, death of Alexa Bartell, 20.

On the day in question, the windshield of the victim’s Chevy Spark was struck and smashed by what authorities termed a “large landscaping rock.” The impact sent the young woman’s car careening “off the roadway” on a remote stretch of road in Jefferson County.

Bartell died a horrible death in the ensuing crash; prosecutors previously testified the victim’s brain was found in her backseat.

In May 2024, two codefendants in the case, Nicholas “Mitch” James Karol-Chik, and Zachary Kwak, pleaded guilty to lesser crimes, and substantially lesser crimes, respectively. They both agreed to testify against Koenig during his jury trial in Jefferson County District Court.

Each of the codefendants, to varying degrees, played instrumental parts in the rock-throwing that night. But Karol-Chik was admittedly more culpable than Kwak, having also taken part in additional such attacks in February 2023 and even days before in early April 2023.

On Friday, Karol-Chik told jurors Koenig let out an excited whoop as he saw Bartell’s compact car drive off Indiana Street and through a fence in a field near the Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge, according to a courtroom report by the Denver Post.

“He was excited,” the witness told the jury, referring to the defendant. “He would just look at us with this big smile on his face.”

On that fateful night, several landscaping rocks were thrown at other cars, both in motion and parked. But some claimed details are mixed.

Kwak maintains he did not throw any of the rocks at all that night, according to the Post. Instead, Kwak earlier testified he only collected the rocks from multiple parking lots and then handed them over to the two front-seat passengers, who threw them.

The speedometer in the teenagers’ vehicle was 103 mph just before the 9.3-pound rock was thrown that took Bartell’s life, Kwak also previously testified. Karol-Chik, however, said the car was doing 80 mph. Both men said Koenig sped up before the final, fatal attack.

Karol-Chik went on to say the celebratory whooping and smiles were in line with how the trio had generally acted over the thrown rocks that night; when a rock struck a car, they would express delight; when a rock missed a car, they would express disappointment.

“We only thought of them as cars,” the witness continued. “But we never thought of who may be driving them.”

Each of the defendants was initially charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, assault in the second degree, and attempted second-degree assault. Kwak took a plea deal on three assault charges: one count of first-degree assault on Bartell and two counts of second-degree assault for attacks on three other victims. Karol-Chik pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder.

Even with plea deals, Karol-Chik and Kwak face decades behind bars; they are slated to be sentenced on May 1 and May 2, respectively.

Koenig, for his part, has conceded some responsibility. His lawyers insist he should only be convicted of manslaughter because none of the rock-throwers had the intent to kill, or even harm, anyone else.

The defense is also hinging some hopes on long-inconsistent statements from Karol-Chik, who for several months told prosecutors that Kwak was the one who threw the rock that killed Bartell.

Only during a fourth and final proffer interview — an interview in service of a plea deal — did Karol-Chik finally tell investigators Koenig was the person responsible for the woman’s death.

At the time, he and Koenig were best friends and “almost close enough to be brothers,” Karol-Chik reportedly told the jury. The lies came during three out of four proffer interviews, because Koenig and Karol-Chik agreed to pin the crime on Kwak, who they barely knew, during a discussion after seeing emergency vehicles later that night.

“We went over everything that happened and it was at that time that Joe said to me that we wouldn’t have to worry about it, we’ll just say that Zach did it,” Karol-Chik testified on Friday.

On cross-examination, however, Karol-Chik also said he long believed Kwak had actually thrown the rock, according to the Post.

The witness testified he remembered remarking on the sheer size of the rock, recalling he told Kwak it was too big to throw and being rebuffed. Karol-Chik went on to say he remembered Kwak saying he would throw the rock if Karol-Chik would not.

Then, the state worked to clean things up a bit.

“Was the truth that Joseph Koenig threw the rock that killed Alexa Bartell?” a prosecutor asked on redirect.

Karol-Chik replied in the affirmative.

This coming week, jurors will decide who and what to believe. Closing arguments are scheduled to end by April 21.

Frank Felix and Joshua Acosta (Fullerton Police Department).

A 33-year-old California man will spend the rest of his life in prison for murdering three people, including the parents of a 17-year-old girl he became obsessed with after meeting her in the “furry” subculture nearly nine years ago.

Frank Sato Felix was found guilty last year of three counts each of first-degree murder and enhancements of multiple murders, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office said. On Friday, a judge sentenced him to three life terms behind bars.

The victims were 39-year-old Jennifer Goodwill-Yost, and her husband, 35-year-old Christopher Yost, along with their friend Arthur “Billy” Boucher, who happened to be spending the night at the home at the time of the murders.

According to a courtroom report from the Orange County Register, Yost’s sister made a victim impact statement.

“No sentence can erase the horrors of that night,” she said.

Felix also made a brief statement in which he reportedly called himself a “beast.”

“To the families and the victims, I would trade places in a minute with those who were killed,” he reportedly said.

As Law&Crime previously reported, prosecutors say the teen girl in 2016 “was introduced by her mother to the ‘furry’ subculture, which involves people dressing up in animal costumes.” It was at these events where the girl met Felix, then 25 years old, and his buddy Joshua Charles Acosta, an Army mechanic stationed at Ft. Irwin in Barstow, who was 21 at the time.

According to prosecutors, Felix became “obsessed” with the girl and was eventually “romantically involved” with her.

Goodwill-Yost and her husband, 35-year-old Christopher Yost — the girl’s stepfather — disapproved of the relationship. Felix decided he needed the parents out of the way so the 17-year-old girl could run away with him. He gave Acosta a shotgun and ammunition and on Sept. 24, 2016, they drove to the Yost home in Fullerton.

More on Law&Crime: ‘Planned to kill the whole family’: Man fatally stabs girlfriend and her mother, tells cops he would ‘do it again’ if he got out of prison, police say

They waited until the Yosts and Boucher went to sleep. The girl came outside and sat with Felix in his truck parked in the driveway. Armed with the shotgun, Acosta slipped inside the home. Acosta executed Boucher as he slept on the couch. He then went into the master bedroom where he shot Goodwill-Yost in the face. Yost ran for his life and tried to escape to a patio area. But Acosta tracked him down and shot him in the head.

Acosta, Felix and the girl headed back to Felix’s house in Sun Valley, where they burned their clothes and tried to destroy their cellphones, prosecutors said. Meanwhile, the Yosts’ other children, ages 6 and 9, were sleeping in the home at the time of the murders and woke up to find their parents and Boucher dead. They called 911.

After an investigation, Fullerton police arrested Felix at his home and Acosta at Fort Irwin. Prosecutors charged Acosta with three counts of first-degree murder. A jury convicted him in 2018, and a judge sentenced him to life in prison.

“Two little girls, six and nine, went to sleep not knowing the last time they would see their parents would be when they woke up to find them shot to death,” Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said in a statement. “The trauma inflicted on those little girls compounded by the loss both of their parents in such a violent way is beyond heartbreaking. Violence is never the answer, and a sick and twisted plan turned into life behind bars for two young men.”

As for the teen girl, the Orange County Register reported that she testified at Acosta’s trial that she had no knowledge of the plot to kill her parents. She reportedly told the jury that her stepfather had been molesting her for more than a decade. After telling Felix about the abuse, she claimed he threatened to tell her mother about the molestation unless she had sex with him. Prosecutors never charged her with a crime.

Left: Sekou Conde (Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office). Right: Donrell Canda (Obituary).

Drama and scorn ran rampant in a Michigan courtroom on Friday, where a convicted killer was shouted down by his victim’s family members before he could tender some formal condolences.

In June 2023, Sekou Conde, 24, repeatedly shot and killed Donrell Canda, 24, inside his own home – in front of the slain man’s son and girlfriend, according to the Ann Arbor Police Department.

In February, the defendant was convicted by a jury of his peers on all counts against him, including one count each of premeditated murder in the first degree, felony murder, and first-degree home invasion, as well as two counts of possession of a firearm during a felony.

On Friday, Washtenaw County Trial Court Judge Carol Kuhnke sentenced Conde to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The sentence was small solace for the victim’s family.

“It’s hard for us as a family to even get together for holidays because a part of us is missing,” Stefan McCoy, Canda’s father, told the judge, according to a courtroom report by The Ann Arbor News. “A vital part of us is missing. Things don’t feel right no more.”

That part was taken from the family on the night of June 4, 2023, sometime after 10 p.m., when Conde confronted Canda as he was walking into his home on Sandalwood Circle “and opened fire,” according to a press release issued by the police department.

“The victim then entered his home where a 23-year-old female and his 3-year-old son were inside,” police wrote. “The suspect followed the victim into the home and fired additional shots.”

In the end, Canda was shot four times: once in each leg; once in the chest; once in the head, prosecutors told jurors during the trial.

More Law&Crime coverge: Family shouts ‘we love you’ at teen accused of murdering older brother after mom tried to separate them

Law enforcement said the killer and the victim knew one another; evidence presented during trial suggested the motive for the killing was artistic differences about a music album the two participated in – Canda is said to have cut Conde’s presence from the recording, the deceased man’s girlfriend testified, according to the Ann Arbor News.

Conde, for his part, disputed the proffered motive.

“Honestly, what type of reason would that be to murder someone?” Conde asked out loud when taking the stand in his own defense.

But jurors believed the state.

On April 11, before being sentenced, the since-condemned man reportedly complained that his conviction was unjust. He said the prosecution allowed someone to lie on the stand and that police committed errors during their investigation.

Then, he tried to speak up in court again, one last time, in an apparent effort to offer sympathy to Canda’s loved ones.

“Once again, I would like to say I give my –” Conde began before being cut off by Canda’s shouting family members, interrupting the defendant’s would-be soliloquy with: “Don’t say it, man” and “Save it.”

The judge, for her part, admonished the breach of decorum. She reprimanded the grieving family and gave Conde another opportunity to finish his statement – but, finally, he decided on silence.

“My heart is broke. Our hearts are broke,” McCoy reportedly added. “There is nothing I really can say that he even really give a care about.”

Background: The Pueblo County, Colo. courthouse where Solomon Martinez stood trial (KKTV). Inset: Solomon Martinez (Pueblo Police Department).

A Colorado man who was arrested with human remains in his jacket was convicted of murder after attempting to claim that his victim killed herself.

Solomon Martinez, 27, was found guilty by a jury on March 13 after going on trial for the January 2024 murder of Renee Portillos, 47. According to reporting from the courtroom by KKTV, a local CBS affiliate, prosecutors presented DNA evidence, the autopsy report, and evidence from Martinez’s phone that pointed to his guilt. The defense unsuccessfully argued that Portillos killed herself.

When Martinez was arrested by officers with the Pueblo Police Department on Jan. 10, 2024, he was working as a private security guard at the Sangre De Cristo Arts Center. In court documents obtained by ABC affiliate KRDO at the time, officers stated that they overheard Martinez talking before they made contact with him. He reportedly said, “I had a hand in my jacket for two days.”

According to court documents, officers found a severed, human hand in a plastic bag in the pocket of his jacket as well as blood in his vehicle. During questioning by police, officers noticed visible cuts on his hands. A witness reportedly showed police a video he recorded that showed the victim’s body, which had been decapitated.

The documents stated that Martinez told police that he picked up Portillos for a sexual encounter on the night of Jan. 8, 2024. Martinez claimed that she demanded to be paid for the encounter and he refused. After that, he said that he dropped her off in the early hours of the morning.

Martinez’s story to police also involved his roommate at the time. According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by The Pueblo Chieftain, the unnamed roommate spotted a blood-covered Martinez at a car wash at about 5 a.m. on Jan. 9. Martinez reportedly asked his roommate to borrow some tools and dig a 10-foot-deep hole, offering to forgive $1,000 of debt in exchange for his help.

The roommate declined, later telling KRDO, “I was terrified. I was beyond terrified. Like, I can’t even put into words how physically scared I was.” The outlet reported that a friend of the roommate called the police.

Portillos’ remains were found on Jan. 9 in Fountain Creek.

Martinez was found guilty of first-degree murder after deliberation, tampering with a dead body, and abuse of a corpse.

A Florida couple is behind bars after they allegedly lured a teenage girl they met online to their home, tortured and suffocated her to death over a piece of missing jewelry, and dismembered her body before disposing of her remains in a dumpster.

Steven Gress, 35, and his girlfriend Michell Brandes, 37, stand accused of first-degree murder and kidnapping in the death of 16-year-old Miranda Corsette. The St. Petersburg Police Department said in a press release Friday that Gress picked up the girl on Feb. 14 after meeting her on a dating app and took her to his home in the 2700 block of 27th Ave. N. After hanging out that day, he drove her back to her home. Miranda returned to his home the next day, but this time she would not make it out alive.

More from Law&Crime: ‘F— you, he is not going to bite me’: Boyfriend ‘jealous’ of 5-year-old getting ‘too much attention’ beat him to death for being ‘disrespectful,’ police say

St. Petersburg police Chief Anthony Holloway told reporters at a press conference that there was a dispute over some missing jewelry on Feb. 20. Gress and Brandes allegedly assaulted and tortured Miranda for the next week.

“Repeatedly beat the victim, while holding her captive for seven days and eventually suffocating her by wrapping plastic wrap around her face,” a judge said during Gress’ first appearance, according to local NBC affiliate WFLA.

Gress and Brandes then put the teen’s body in his car and drove the remains some 15 miles to a home in the 12000 block of Mallory Drive in Largo. There, police believe she was dismembered. Her remains were once again moved, this time to a dumpster about 55 miles away across Tampa Bay. Cops have located the dumpster, however the remains were disposed into a Hillsborough County landfill. Cops are continuing to search for Miranda’s body.

Miranda’s grandmother, who had custody of her after both of her parents died, reported her missing to Gulfport police on Feb. 24. Gulfport police commander and acting chief Mary Farrand said her department is “very familiar” with Miranda, who is a “frequent runaway” with a history of mental health issues and drug abuse. She also was the mother of a 11-month-old child. Her grandma told police Miranda was known to run away and she’d usually return home, but not this time.

On Thursday, a “witness” contacted police regarding information about a kidnapping and homicide. Police realized they already had Gress in custody after he allegedly pointed a harpoon at Brandes and was in possession of drugs. Detectives quickly unfurled the horrific case. Brandes turned herself into cops on Saturday.

Gress was quite chatty during his first appearance.

After the judge read the allegations against him, he reportedly told the court, “They just said I suffocated,” before a public defender quickly intervened and ordered him to “not say anymore!”

Gress also questioned the court about the whereabouts of Brandes.

“Where is Michelle Brandes at?” Gress asked twice, video from local Fox affiliate WTVT showed.

“Talk to your lawyer,” the judge sternly advised Gress before ending the hearing.

Both Gress and Brandes are being held at the Pinellas County Jail without bond.

Inset: Ralph Hensel (Orange County Jail). Background: Scene where Hensel allegedly shot 32-year-old Ja’Keem Williams to death at an apartment complex in Winter Garden, Florida. (WESH/YouTube).

A 57-year-old Florida man hid behind an apartment building and waited for a man on an ATV to drive by before he shot him to death following a complaint about him riding in the complex, authorities say.

Ralph Francis Hensel stands accused of first-degree murder in the death of 32-year-old Ja’Keem Williams. According to a probable cause arrest affidavit, the leasing office manager at the Bay Pointe apartments in Winter Garden, an Orlando suburb, called police just before 4 p.m. to complain about a man riding an ATV in the complex. Just a minute later, another call came in to report that someone had been shot.

More from Law&Crime: ‘Epitome of evil’: Hungarian national ‘hunts’ disabled senior men like ‘prey’ before killing them, police say

Cops arrived on scene and found a resident completing CPR on a man later identified as Williams. But it was “apparent he was deceased,” the affidavit said. Witnesses told officers they saw Hensel, armed with a gun, walk from the leasing area toward Williams as he drove the ATV. Hensel shouted something at Williams, but witnesses could not make out what he was saying. Shortly after that, the witnesses heard two loud bangs.

Hensel allegedly walked back to the leasing office and said “I killed him.” Cops on scene took Hensel into custody and recovered a gun nearby. Surveillance video confirmed that Hensel was allegedly the shooter. It showed him walking from the leasing office and around a nearby building with his firearm, where he stood “lying in wait,” according to police. Hensel then shot Williams as he rode past, cops said.

Detectives also reviewed the 911 call from the office manager with a man in the background saying “that motherf—er’s dead,” according to the affidavit.

Local CBS affiliate WKMG said it knocked on the door of Hansel’s apartment. The woman who answered was the leasing manager that initially called 911. She told the outlet she lived with Hansel but declined to speak further because the complex’s owners told her not to speak publicly about the case.

According to NBC affiliate WESH cops have been to the complex four times about people riding ATVs. The riders had been warned not to drive the ATVs in the complex, per the TV station. But Briana Bermudez, the mother of three of Williams’ five children, told the outlet that was no excuse to shoot and kill him.

“He took the father of my three children with no remorse, walked off saying, I shot him,” Bermudez said. “He’s gone. He did not care. You shot him? Not once, but twice in the back of the head.”

Bermudez said Williams enjoyed riding ATVs as a way to decompress. He leaves behind children ages 11, 10, 6, 4 and 11 months. The two mothers of his children sat down for an interview with local Fox affiliate WOFL.

“He was very active, her two kids are older,” Bermudez said. “He’s been with them for ten years, stepped in. Those are his kids, five kids, so that’s all the man cared about. That’s what he did, day in and day out.”

Hensel is in the Orange County Jail without bond. He has a court date scheduled for Feb. 28.

Mark Bent, 43, was found guilty in December of first-degree murder and felony enhancement for the use of a deadly weapon in the commission of a felony for the September 2023 killing of Nikolas Bird, 23, outside his home in Bonneville County, according to East Idaho News. Bent, who was sentenced Monday, took to Facebook after the fatal shooting to explain why he took Bird’s life, saying it stemmed from online bullying related to his occupation. Bird’s family has denied the bullying accusation and says there’s no evidence to support it.

“I am saddened to say that I have committed some serious crimes today that will put me in jail for the rest of my life or lead to death,” Bent wrote after the shooting, according to prosecutors and East Idaho News. “As some of you know, shortly after I moved to Idaho Falls, I was slandered on Facebook with rumors of me being an Undercover Police Officer. Those rumors were followed by threats, harassment and more slander. Even after the facts were out that I am not a Police Officer of any kind, people still chose to believe it and continue to harass, threaten me and eventually look up where I live and work and post it on the internet.”

Bent was found guilty in December following a week-long jury trial, with prosecutors saying he planned the killing months in advance after being allegedly targeted on Facebook. He claimed during the trial that he blacked out during the shooting.

“This all started from me being involved with a local Facebook group called East Idaho Speedhunters and a car club called The Castaways,” Bent claimed on Facebook. “After being involved with The Castaways for a short time and seeing that they were involved with a lot of illegal activities, I departed from them. Because of that, the rumor of me being an Undercover Police Officer began and even though it seemed to pass, the rumor eventually came back to light.”

More from Law&Crime: ‘Fed up’ brother kills ‘bullying’ sister and shoots parents, claiming family ‘gangs up on him’ for being broke and unemployed: Police

According to Bent, people kept posting about him on the Speedhunters page “in a negative way” to the point where he started to think about “attacking on one of the car meets/shows they attend,” East Idaho News reports.

“But my main goal was to kill Nik Bird, the founder of the Castaways that started all of this by spreading rumors,” Bent said. “He also posted where I work. So I told myself that if anything were to happen to my job, I will go after him. Unfortunately for him and his friends, I lost my job recently, so I followed said plans.”

At his sentencing hearing Monday, Bonneville County Prosecutor Randy Neal repeated the word “bang” 17 times to symbolize the amount of times Bird was shot. Bird’s parents gave impact statements during the proceeding, which were reported by East Idaho News. Bent could be seen crying at times.

“Nikolas loved with every fiber of his being,” said Bird’s mother, Tara Withers. “You knew you were loved when you were loved by Nik Bird.”

Describing Bent, Withers said: “Mark took any future Nik would’ve ever had. He will never know what it’s like to be married or to buy his first home. Mark took this away in the most brutal way possible. Mark laid in wait for over an hour to kill Nikolas.”

Bird’s father, Todd Bird, said each day is a “relentless reminder of what we’ve lost” since losing Bent last year.

“Nik’s laughter, his infectious smile, and the warmth of his presence,” Bird said. “And now, I find myself navigating life in a work that feels dark. Daily life is overshadowed by his absence. The joy that was once in our lives has been replaced by all-consuming sadness and longing for my son.”

An octogenarian Tennessee man is behind bars after admittedly killing his wife earlier this week, according to Volunteer State authorities.

Joseph Scrofne, 81, stands accused of one count of murder in the first degree, according to Sumner County Sheriff’s Office records.

The case against the defendant for the death of Linda Scrofne, 80, came together relatively quickly, investigators say.

The man who allegedly self-widowed would make himself known to law enforcement the day after his wife was found dead but not confess to her murder. At least not at first.

On Monday, a detective responded to a call about a death investigation on Meadows Road in Portland – a medium-sized city located roughly 40 miles northeast of Nashville.

Several deputies reportedly had concerns about the woman’s death and the ensuing investigation due to bruising on her neck and blood on the side of her face, according to arrest documents obtained by Nashville-based ABC affiliate WKRN.

Suspicions were roused; the next day came.

And with it, another call.

More Law&Crime coverage: ‘He did not want this child’: Man strangled pregnant estranged wife because he didn’t want to pay for baby’s health insurance

This time, the call came into 911 dispatch. The defendant had allegedly expressed some suicidal thoughts, according to court documents. He was allegedly found driving back toward the deceased woman’s home and initially detained for his own safety.

At some point during that first detention, a deputy asked Joseph Scrofne if he had hurt his wife the day before.

The defendant allegedly answered in the affirmative.

“I was going to murder her,” the man allegedly said.

He allegedly added: “I strangled her.”

More Law&Crime coverage: ‘Guess I lost my head’: Octogenarian allegedly kills wife of over 65 years with ‘large kitchen knife’ during ‘big fight’

Asked to further account for his actions, the elderly defendant allegedly said he performed the strangulation with a rope because “she was crazy,” according to the arrest report.

The man allegedly went on to say his wife had repeatedly gotten up in the middle of the night and fallen down.

“Once he got her in the bed, he thought ‘I might as well kill this b––––, right now,” the documents obtained by the TV station read. “I was going to murder her and suicide on me.”

Described as not entirely unlike unrepentant, the defendant allegedly said he hoped that he did not have to go to jail “for doing his family a favor,” according to sheriff’s deputies.

More Law&Crime coverage: ‘I would like to report a murder’: Man prepared snack for kids, then executed wife in front of them over alleged affair before confessing in 911 call, cops say

Law&Crime reached out to the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office for additional details on this story, but no response was immediately forthcoming at the time of publication.

The defendant is currently being detained in the Sumner County Jail without bond.
