Two teenagers in South Carolina, ages 16 and 15, are facing murder charges for allegedly bludgeoning, stabbing and then burning a 13-year-old girl inside of a vacant house in what cops are calling a “gut-wrenching” killing that “shocks the conscious.”

“Brutal, heinous, vicious, gruesome, monstrous and disturbing. These are the words I’d use to describe this murder investigation,” said Columbia Police Chief William “Skip” Holbrook at a press conference Saturday.

Ka’Niyah Baker, the victim, was found dead in a “structure fire” at a vacant home on Cardamon Court in Columbia last Wednesday night, according to the Columbia Police Department. She had been reported missing on Jan. 12, with the last sighting of her being listed at a location roughly 20 miles away from where she was found.

“The manner of death was not an accident,” said Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford at Saturday’s presser. “Ka’Niyah was bludgeoned, stabbed and burned.”

According to Holbrook, Baker was born and raised in Sumter and was most recently in foster care in Columbia. She and the two suspects all have a history of being “runaways,” Holbrook said, with each of them going missing over the past two months after leaving home.

“First suspect is a 16-year-old female,” Holbrook said. “Her last known address was in Columbia. She was reported missing by her mom on Jan. 12. She has a history of disorderly conduct, malicious injury, throwing bodily fluids; she was wanted by the Department of Juvenile Justice (Georgia) for cutting off her ankle monitor around Jan. 12. She was last enrolled in a local high school in January 2024 and she’s currently listed as dropped out and she is a frequent runaway.”

The second suspect was described as a 15-year-old female whose last known address was in Columbia as well. “She also was enrolled in a local high school as of last December,” Holbrook said. “She is currently listed as dropped out and she also is a frequent runaway.”

Describing Baker, Holbrook said: “She also has a history of running away.” Her cause of death was blunt force trauma.

“We expect to pursue justice in this matter,” Fifth Circuit Solicitor Byron Gipson told reporters. A motive has yet to be released.

“When you talk to people that have been involved in committing heinous crimes like this, you’re looking to seek answers and read their reactions,” Holbrook said. “But sometimes, it’s when there are no reactions is what’s most troubling.”

When Baker was first reported as missing, flyers were sent out on Jan. 16 saying she was believed to be in danger, according to local ABC and CW affiliate WIS. At that point, however, she had already been found dead in the fire.

More from Law&Crime: ‘No sympathy’: Teen girl who took selfies after beating disabled man to death with friends tries apologizing to victim’s family in court as she learns her fate

“The young woman’s description matched a few other women who were reported as runaways or missing,” Rutherford explained. “So, the reason that the flyer went out for a missing teen, even though this person already deceased, was in the hopes that she was still alive and this was not her.”

Holbrook told reporters that Baker’s murder “has been an extremely difficult case” for investigators to work on.

“This shocks the conscience to me,” Holbrook said. “We’ve got some work to do with our system. We’ve got some work to do with our young people. There’s too much despair. And we’ve got to change that.”

A man from Washington, D.C., has learned his fate in the shooting death of a 13-year-old boy killed outside the shooter’s home in 2023.

Jason Lewis, 42, was sentenced to 12½ years in prison on Friday for the killing of Karon Blake, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced in a press release. Lewis was convicted in August of voluntary manslaughter, assault with a dangerous weapon, and firearm charges.

Lewis, a father of a young daughter and former city government employee at the Department of Parks and Recreation, apologized in a letter sent to the judge.

“Everything I’ve committed myself to in reference to giving young people opportunities to grow, learn and progress has felt in vain,” he wrote, local NBC affiliate WRC reported. “I wrecked so much that night.”

The shooting happened before dawn on Jan. 7, 2023, in the 1000 block of Quincy Street, NE, in Washington D.C. Police responded to the location for the report of a shooting at 3:56 a.m. The victim was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Lewis said he was in bed when he heard a noise. He got his gun, described by police as a black Smith and Wesson M&P .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol, and checked outside, police said.

“Lewis observed the decedent by a white vehicle (Kia Soul) parked on the north side of the street,” police wrote. “Lewis reported he yelled, ‘Hey’ to the decedent, and the decedent ran straight (‘bee-lined’) toward him in a full sprint to the front of his gate.”

Lewis told police he fired only twice, though officers said they found three bullet casings. They determined he fired twice at Blake and once at the Kia.

After Lewis fired his weapon, Karon yelled, “I’m a kid. I’m a kid,” and collapsed, Law&Crime reported, citing the affidavit.

At his trial, Lewis testified it was self-defense.

“I saw a pistol inside the car, the driver’s seat. I saw a flash and heard a bang. I fired. I thought it was a gun. I thought I was being shot at. In my peripheral vision, I saw someone charging at me. I saw a person. I feared for my safety. I feared for my life. I fired two shots,” he said.

The victim’s mother, Londen Blake, spoke out after her son’s death.

“He took my baby, my firstborn,” she said.

A 13-year-old girl in Pennsylvania allegedly stabbed her mother to death in the middle of the day last Friday and then told a news reporter on scene that she felt “regret, guilt, and self-disgust” as she was led into a police van in handcuffs.

The suspect, identified publicly as Lataya Powell since she was charged as an adult with criminal homicide and other offenses, stands accused of repeatedly and fatally stabbing her 44-year-old mother Tameeka Tucker in the “torso and head area” and wounding an 11-year-old boy at their Wilkes-Barre home.

The Wilkes-Barre Police Department said that they responded to the scene just after 12:30 p.m. on Good Friday and found Powell’s mother “nonresponsive” at the South Sherman Street residence.

“The initial investigation determined that the 44 YOA Victim was suffering from apparent wounds to the torso and head area and was nonresponsive. A second victim and the suspect were also located at the scene. The second victim was transported to an area hospital for treatment,” cops said.

The 11-year-old boy who survived the stabbing attack was reportedly found wounded on a couch inside the home.

The suspect, on the other hand, was allegedly found sitting on a bedroom floor with blood on her hands.

More Law&Crime coverage: Stepdad came home to find high school math teacher wife shot to death and 14-year-old daughter holding the murder weapon, sheriff says

According to WBRE/WYOU, police alleged in an affidavit that Powell acknowledged the victim “took” her phone before they had an argument that turned deadly.

“I don’t have my phone because my mom took it before our fight” and “I don’t know how people can do stuff like this and not feel bad about it,” the 13-year-old allegedly said at the scene. She’s reportedly also accused of saying “I’m reason my mom is dead” and “I killed my mom, and she’ll never forgive me if she is alive.”

The Citizens’ Voice further reported Powell saying “I deserve to be in jail.”

The local news affiliates’ cameras were rolling, too, when Powell was taken into custody. Reporter Gianna Galli held up a microphone and asked the suspect directly, “Any emotion at all?”

“Regret, guilt, and self-disgust,” Powell could be heard saying.

The juvenile defendant facing a homicide charge as an adult will also have to fight aggravated assault and evidence tampering counts.

The evidence tampering charge appears to stem from Powell’s alleged admission to tossing the knife used in the slaying in front of a neighboring residence.

Gerald Hale appears in a booking photo in April 2022 (Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office)

An upstate New York man will spend the next seven years in state prison for the repeat sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl.

In late January, Gerald Hale, 36, pleaded guilty to one count of criminal sexual act in the first degree. After being on the run from police for nearly two months, he turned himself in on multiple counts, including sexual abuse in the second degree, attempted rape in the second degree, criminal sexual act in the first degree, criminal sexual act in the second degree, menacing in the third degree, endangering the welfare of a child, and a parole violation in April 2022.

On Thursday, Onondaga County Court Judge Matthew J. Doran held a sentencing hearing during which the victim’s family revealed shocking and tragic details about how Hale sought to manipulate his victim.

Before the sentence was handed down, Onondaga County Assistant District Attorney Ariana Pastorello read from a letter written by the girl’s family, according to a courtroom report by Syracuse.com.

For years, the prosecutor said, Hale ingratiated himself with the victim’s family. During this time, the since-condemned man celebrated holidays with the girl and her relatives — even traveling together.

But all the while, police say, Hale was sexually abusing the girl.

In a felony criminal complaint obtained by the outlet, law enforcement accused the defendant of forcing oral sex on a 12-year-old girl between June 1, 2021, and Aug. 17, 2021, at a residence in Syracuse. The charging documents also allege he forced oral sex on the girl — by then 13 — on three separate occasions between Aug. 18, 2021, and Dec. 8, 2021. On that final date mentioned in the complaint, Hale also allegedly tried to force the girl to have sex with him.

Police wrote in the complaint that the abuse was “injurious to the mental and moral welfare of” the victim.

The surreptitious sexual abuse only went on for so long, according to the family’s letter, because Hale was able to extract a “pinky promise” from his victim that she would not tell anyone about what he did. Later, Hale turned to threats, the letter said. The abuser told the girl he would hurt her family if she spoke about her abuse.

Hale’s sentencing would allow the girl to begin the process of moving forward with her life, safe with the knowledge that he could never abuse her again, the family’s letter reportedly said.

Remarking on the plea agreement, the judge said the compromise there left both sides disappointed, according to Syracuse.com. But, Doran said, he approved the deal to spare the family from having to relive the girl’s abuse during a potential trial.

The defendant reportedly wished the girl a speedy recovery and prayed for forgiveness.

Hale has a lengthy criminal history, including a prior parole violation, a domestic charge, a weapons charge, criminal trespass and criminal contempt, according to court documents obtained by Syracuse.com.

He will have to register as a sex offender upon his eventual release from an Empire State prison.
